IOS 4.2.1 auto-correction bug in gmail web interface

Seems to be a bug in 4.2.1, relating to auto-correction of spelling errors within the gmail web interface (i.e. within safari)...
Whenever I'm typing, if I make a spelling error for which auto-correction suggests an alternative, attempting to cancel the auto-correct by hitting the little X icon next to the suggested word has no effect - the suggestion stays there... the only things that can be done are to either (a) backspace and retype the word correctly, or (b) hit space and allow the erroneous correction to be made.
Auto-correct appears to work fine for other sites accessed within Safari, and also other apps... seems to just be isolated to the gmail web interface (at least as far as I'm experiencing atm)
Anyone else noticing this? Any workarounds or fixes suggested?

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem on an iPad running iOS 4.2.1 (8C148)--- exactly as you described: I can't cancel individual autocorrections. This is a major problem with typing on the iPad, because it's hard to be precise with the keyboard, but technical words need to be canceled. It happens in gmail, but not some other text boxes in Safari, such as this one.

  • Auto-correction differences between iOS versions

To make a long story short, my location is Icelandic and I use the Icelandic keyboard provided by Apple on my iPhone 3GS. Back when I was on iOS 3.x the iPhone built up a dictionary and offered to correct my spelling of Icelandic words.  Very convenient.  But when I upgraded to 4.0 this capability disappeared and hasn't come back.  And still hasn't come back either in the GM release of iOS5.  My iPhone still offers auto-correct for the English keyboard but not my own language like it did before.  Does anyone know why it's like that?  Was it a decision by Apple to rurn it off for 'non-official' languages and keyboards?  It was obvious that iOS was building up a dictionary of commonly used words, since I hada merely to correct a single word about 3-4 times before it picked it up and offered the correct substitute.

    aegirfrombaxter wrote:
My only concern is why this stopped working completely for the Icelandic language with iOS 4. Was that a concious design on Apple's part or a mistake?
It looks to me from the specs like Apple never officially offered autocorrection for Icelandic in iOS 3, so it is hard to answer  that question.   I don't have anything with that version still on it to test whether it was nonetheless present for some reason as you say.
In iOS 3, the specs indicate these keyboards had no autocorrection provided yet:  Estonian, Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Flemish
Currently, the specs indicate these keyboards have no autocorrection provided yet: Bulgarian, Icelandic, Macedonian, Serbian, Tibetan.

  • What happened to Auto-Correct in the iOS 7 update & can it be fixed?

I am sooo frustrated & I can't take it anymore!!!
My keyboard has essentially taken on a mind of it's own since I did the iOS 7 update. And by the 'coded' messages I receive from family & friends, followed by "#%*+ed Auto-Correct!!!" I know I'm not the only one!
I find it changes words that are spelled correctly & are grammatically sound into something different. It doesn't know what an apostrophe is anymore. It has no sense of humor 'cause it can't figure out how to lol without capitalizing or turning it into something else. (My sister Quoll'ed at me earlier!)
What's goin' on & how can I get it back to the only sorta-sucky, but mostly funny stuff it did in iOS 6?
    Thanks.

I've observed this too and have written to Apple feedback. Suggest everyone else do so as well.
What's happening is they've attempted to implement an autocorrect system that doesn't just look at the current word but the current word and the previous word. In theory that's a great idea, as sometimes the correct spelling will be dependent on context. Mostly, though, its effects are too aggressive and I find I'm ending up with many more errors than under iOS 6 (and I'm fairly accurate on the iP*).
The thing I specifically complained out – since it makes no sense at all – is the way iOS 7 autocorrect seems to hate commas!
If I type a phrase like "the line, therefore" iOS 7 will attempt to turn "line," into some a word without punctuation, e.g. "lines" or "lined". Only after I've typed "therefore" will it offer me the possibility of returning to what I actually typed ("line,"). And if I'm in a rush and don't tap the [x] on the proposed "correction" in time then I'm stuck with it and have to go back and manually edit. (Or I don't notice and end up sending someone a complete nonsense of a sentence.)
This kind of autocorrect is completely nuts. Especially on the iPhone, where you have to go to a different screen of the keyboard to type a comma, so you're hardly going to do it by accident! And on the iPad the corrections almost never involve adding letters that are physically close to the comma key on the keyboard, so again, you're hardly going to hit the comma key by accident if you want, for example, "lines".
My recommendation to Apple was that auto-correct should always respect all punctuation. (Or there should be a setting we switch on for "respect punctuation".)
And that autocorrect should focus on trying to correct the kinds of "real" errors that are made by tapping on adjacent keys instead of aggressively trying to predict what we're about to say and actually changing our words.
In the meantime, I've set up a custom shortcut [,,] which resolves to [, ] – basically on the same principle as two spaces resolving to a period. When I remember to use it, it mostly works quite well at giving me commas that stay stuck.

  • IOS 5.0.1 how to close auto-correct

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS running iOS 5.0.1 (update).
Can the auto-correct function be closed, and spell check still be accessed at will?
The Apple auto-correct function is quite absurd and very unfriendly to me when sending text messages and making notes.
It makes the most stupid and irrelevant corrections to properly structured and written sentences.
My time writing text is greatly extended due to this most unhelpful and very inefficient program.
Any help would be most welcome, thank you.

    Curious Pig,
Thank you kindly for a very helpful and most welcome answer.
Auto-Correct will no longer be a trouble to me.

  • How can I turn off text auto-correct in Number IOS?

I use Numbers as a project workbook and it drives me insane I cant turn off text auto-correct. I use a bunch of abbreviations that Numbers wont allow without constantly changing to the extent that its almost useless.

Auto correct is controlled at the system, not apps, level (with a few possible exceptions, but Numbers isn't one of them).
Settings app > General > Keyboard

  • Text auto-correction is turning on again!

    Hi all!
My iPhone4 is running iOS 5.0.1 and I'm very happy!
But it recently turns text auto-correction on. I turn it off, but sometime later I found it turned on again
I can't understand what causes it to do this. How can I turn this feature absolutely off?

What troubleshooting have you tried over these few days? You charging the phone? Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. This can take up to 60 seconds.

  • IOS 6.0.2 introduce password bug?

Since I updated to iOS 6.0.2, I've experienced problems with some apps that can't seem to remember password credentials after each reload. I have to RE-ENTER the login credentials repeatedly. What a pain!
iOS just can't seem to remember Twitter password in the Settings!! I entered Twitter password, iOS then verify it is correct. Then when I return to the Twitter setting, iOS IMMEDIATELY forgets the password.
Another website reported this problem in greater detailhttp://estrategypro.com/discover-which-ios-apps-store-password-securely-with-ios -6-02-bug/
There could be a bug in the iOS keychain in 6.0.2. This looks serious to me because it has security implications.
    Anyone has the same symptoms?

If enough other people report the issue (I don't have that problem), go to http://apple.com/feedback, select your product and for feedback type select Bug Report.

  • Greek Spell Check and Auto-Correction

Hi, I want to know if I can add a Greek dictionary that will have the same features as the English Language has on Lion.
Why Apple didn't integrate such a simple thing. To make every user from different places in the world to have the convenience of Auto-Correction they have on iOS on OS X too. Greek Auto-Correction exist on iOS why not on Lion?

    Yes, see

Nobody can tell you why Apple hasn't included some feature that you want, but you can ask them for it here:

  • IOS Music app: Album and Artist bugs

My iPod touch (5th generation, iOS 7.1.1) has several bugs in its Music app. Here is how I was able to reproduce the bugs.
    Go to the Artists view.
Select an artist from an album with multiple artists. (Example album: The Lego Movie; example artist: Will Arnett)
    Go to the Albums view.
Select the same album from step 2.
BUG 1: The album only shows the song by that artist. I should see all songs on the album. In addition, the duration of all songs in the album is limited to the song I see, rather than all songs on the album. (When connected to the Internet, "Show Complete Album" appears. [Screenshot] Tapping it invites me to download all of the other songs in the album, which I already have.)
    Go to the Artists view.
Select another artist from the same album from step 2. (Example artist 2: Mark Mothersbaugh)
BUG 2: I only see songs by the artist in step 2, rather than songs by the artist I selected. [Screenshot]
    Go to the Albums view.
Close and re-start the iOS Music app.
Select the same album from step 2. I see all of the album's songs again.
    Go to the Artists view.
Select an artist from the same album as in step 2.
BUG 3: I see the entire album, rather than just the songs by the selected artist. In addition, the artist at the top of the screen is the artist of the first song in the album. [Screenshot]
Can anyone else confirm this bug? Also, what is the best way to report this bug to Apple?

Unfortunately, the 15-minute edit deadline on my original post passed, so I need to make the following correction here:
"Can anyone else confirm this bug? Also, what is the best way to report this bug to Apple?"
    should be

  • Can't turn off auto correct

Im having trouble with turning my auto correct off.
I just updated to yosemite, and i can't turn off the auto correct.
I've gone into settings > keyboard > Text > and un ticked the auto correct box, but it will not stop auto correcting.
Ive had this problem with my previous version of OS X as well.
anyone got any suggestions? i do a lot of typing with abbreviations, and its changing things all the time.

Since I updated my iPad to iOS 5 - spell check works erratically and sporadically as well so I have issues with the way this whole thing works.
Have you tried resetting the Keyboard Dictionary? Settings>General>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary. It is a totally different setting that really shouldn't impact auto correct all - its merely a suggestion borne out of the "Throw enough crap against the wall and hope that something will stick" mentality.
If nothing else works, another standard procedure would be to restore your iPad. If you can restore from a backup that predates this issue, that should work for you.

  • Auto Correcting Things It Shouldn't

So within the last few week my phone started auto correcting things it shouldn't. For example I tried to text "bees" and it changed to "need," "rub" to "run" etc. It never did this before. I didn't change any settings. I didn't add or remove anything from my dictionary. I have the iOS 7.1.1 update. What would cause this and how can I fix it?

Okay, I have done Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. It will take a little bit for me to see if it works. It doesn't do it all the time, and it doesn't do it to every word.

  • Pages Auto Correction

Okay, I disabled everything under auto correction in the pages preferences. However, it's been bugging me to no end that whenever I type something along the lines of 1/100 it will correct it to a date of "Dec 3, 0099" and when I put down 2/4 it will automatically correct it to 1/2 when I don't WANT that. Also when I try 1/1000 it will put it to 1/999 and I cannot complete a lab report when it keeps messing with my numbers and I cannot stop it!

What you describe isn't the result of an auto-correction.
It's the result of the cells auto-formatting.
As it is clearly described in Numbers User Guide, when a cell is in auto-format mode, when we enter two numbers separated by a slash, the entry parser try to convert the entry as a date.
If it can't, it "reduce" the fraction which is the logical mathematical behavior.
The results are linked to the settings in use on the machine
On your machine, 1/100 become "Dec 3, 0099", I get the same behavior on my French system.
    On your machine, 2/4 become 1/2. Here, I get 2 avril 2010.
    On your machine, 1/1000 become 1/999. Here, I get 27 décembre 0999.
As other helpers wrote, the problem isn't an Apple's one but an user's one.
Define the cell format before entering datas and you will be able to insert what you want.
The true problem strike when the datas are stored in a Tab Separated Values text or in a CSV one.
In such case, we can't change the format before the import process.
There is a workaround : don't import the document directly.
Edit it putting a single quote in front of every value.
It's annoying for true numerical values but it's easier to switch numbers from text to numerical format than to switch dates or reduced fractions to their original state.
I will post a script to edit TSV or CSV files so that fractions remain unchanged.

  • Stop auto-correction

I'm typing up a spec sheet and its very important the word 'true' stays as lower case in a table. But no matter what I do (I've turned off auto-correction) it keeps changing it to 'TRUE' If I try and undo the whole word gets removed.
Does anyone know how to fix this really annoying bug?

OK, my mistake. Pages was treating the table like a Numbers table and reformatting it. Setting the table's cell format to Text fixed it.

  • Can I disable auto correct for space only?

A few iOS updates ago Apple changed auto correct behavior to replace letters on the bottom row with space when it sees fit. That makes it an absolute pain to use when typing in Swedish as many words are created by concatenating words without any space in between. Therefore I want to disable that feature of auto correct but use it for other cases. Is that possible? If not, Apple, please change it back! At least for Swedish (and other relevant languages).

    Not possble.
