IOS 5 Bug: Badges on Messaging app

We have stumbled upon a bug in iOS 5 running on the iPhone 4, in regards to the badges showing up on the Messages App.
You can reproduce this bug yourself.
In Settings>Notifications>Messages, set it to:
Notification Center: On
Show: 5 Recent Items
Alert Style: Alerts
Badge App Icon: On
Show Preview: On
Repeat Alert: Never
View In Lock Screen: On
Now, go to your home screen and have somebody text message you a few times in a row. When each text message comes up as an alert dialog box, click on CLOSE.
So far, so good.
However, when you go to look at your Messages App icon, there are *NO* badges to let you know that you just received 2 or 3 text messages. Furthermore, none of those messages made it into your Notification Center either.
In iOS 4, if you clicked "Close" on a Message Alert, you would still be reminded of the fact that you have text messages waiting, because the badge icon would show you how many messages have come in since the last time you launched the Messages app.
This bug is causing us to forget about all sorts of incoming text messages because we don't have a badge reminder NOR a notification center reminder. The badge icon and the notification center reminders should really ONLY DISAPPEAR once we launch the Messages app.
Thanks,
Scott

i tried calling apple about this problem back on ios 5 launch day and i even wrote some guy on infoworld about it. no one even knows what i am talking about or even cares.
im betting on apple made it that way to make the cellular phone companies happy.

  • IOS 5 bug with badges on Messages app

There is a major bug in iOS 5 running on the iPhone 4.
We have our incoming text messages set to notify us with an ALERT. When an incoming text message ALERTS us by interrupting our work, we often press the "CLOSE" button on the alert. HOWEVER, after pressing the CLOSE button, the Messages app no longer has a badge on it to let us know that we have unread messages waiting for us to read. The number badge disappears.
This used to work just fine in iOS 4, and we need this fixed so we don't keep forgetting about unread text messages!

What you described is exactly how it worked for me in iOS 4.
If i clicked CLOSE, it assumed I read the message and was done with it.

  • Why do I always have a badge on Messages app?

I just recently updated my phone to iOS 7 and then restored my phone from the backup. As soon as the backup was restored, I had a notification badge on my messages app telling me that I had an unread message, however when I open the app, I have no unread messages. When I open Messages on my MacBook, I also have no unread messages. When I do get a message, the badges stack (so for one unread message, the badge will say "2" even though there's only one). Here's what I tried:
    1. Opening and closing all conversations on both my iPhone 5 and MacBook (my only two Apple devices using my iMessage account)
    2. Rebooting my phone
    3. Hard resetting the messages app, and closing it from the multitask switcher
    4. Signing out and deactivating my iMessage account on my MacBook
    5. Signing out and signing back into iMessage on my phone
I'm not sure what else to try besides deleting all my conversations or just restoring and starting from scratch, and I don't want to either of those things. I know this was happening in beta, but I feel like that problem would have been addressed by now. What else is there that I can do that might make the incorrect badge go away?

    Hi jstoneshelton,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your update to Yosemite. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. From what you have said, it sounds like it may be an issue either saving or accessing saved passwords, possibly involving Keychain, or an issue with Autofill in Safari. You may find the following articles helpful in clarifying the possible issues (the second is aimed at Safari under Mavericks, but should still apply to Yosemite):

  • On my home screen I have the red badge on  messages app showing I have a new message. However, when I open my messages there is not a new one?

How can I get rid of the notification on the lock screen? I can't get it to go away since there is not a new message. I hope I'm explaining this well enough, any help is appreciated!

Reset your iPhone.  Hold the home and on/off buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.

  • IPhone iOS 8: Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash

Issue (?ios 8 bug?): Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash. Present in ios 8.0, and also still in ios 8.0.2. iPhone 6+ 64GB.
I just wondered if anyone else has been having this problem.
Initially it worked great. Tapping the photo button next to the text box in message should bring up a menu with your latest photos and other sharing options. However, after the first couple of days, tapping the button brought up the menu, the phone freezes, and then after a few seconds the photo app crashes.
Deleting most of my photos restored the function, but after another couple of days (and some more photos) it started happening again so I think perhaps it is related to the number of photos. After about 5-10 photos it loads the menu very slowly and its quite buggy. After 20+ photos it wont load the menu at all without freezing and the app crashing.
My iphone 6+ was set up as a new phone (not restored from back-up).
I hope this is some kind of bug that will be fixed in ios 8.0.3, but wondered if anyone else has the same problem or has any solutions?
My workaround at the moment is just to go the photos app and either copy and paste the photo into a message, or share the photo via the photos app.

I have this same issue with my 128 gb 6 plus.  I've tried restoring as new on a few occasions, but to no avail.  I did notice while my pc was synchronizing my apps, that the feature worked fine a few times until the synchronization was complete.  I seriously hope that the numbers of photos limits one's use of the feature, because i purchased the 128 gb 6 plus so that i could keep photos at my ready.
Has anyone heard of a solution yet?

  • Messages app is not sending alerts in ios 8 is also hanging and crashing very glitchy

Updated to ios 8 yesterday and noticed that messages were appearing in my messaging app, but no chime or alert badge was appearing.  yes i did check do not disturb, it was off, the sound was on and alerts were also turned on.
i've also noticed the messages app is crashing about 50% of the time and is hanging every time i use it.  i'm going to backup and restore now.  wish me luck.
    anyone else having problems?

This was the final step in a series of attempts and it finally worked for me... finally after an hour or two of reading every post I could find on getting repeat alert notifications. I closed the app (double clicking home and pressing the red circle with the white line in it which  turned off the messages app).  Then I held the home and off button until the apple came on...  I had also reset the DNS service numbers to 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4:  I also made sure that the badge icon was on, a sound was selected and I had it turned to repeat alert 3 times.  When I tested after doing all these things the repeat worked.  I decided I wanted to turn it to repeat 10 times and it didn't work.... so I held the home and off button at the same time and it reset so that the alert repeats 10 times.  Perhaps the combination of all these these things did the trick, or maybe it was just the home and off button reset...

  • Badge app for message app isn't working

The badge app notifications on my message app recently stopped working. So whenever I get a message, and my phone is unlocked, I am not notified. So, I have been missing important texts from family. I looked at the notifications and they are turned on, as are the sounds. I do have the banner notifications turned off. Could this be the reason? Any suggestions as to how to get the badge notifications working again?
Just a side note, I have tried turning the settings on and off and restarting the phone, to no avail. I also tried a hard shut down of the app and restarted it and that also had no results.

    Hi Jme88,
It may help to force close all open apps and reset your iPhone.
Force an app to close in iOS
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5137
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1430
If the notifications for Messages still aren't functioning, the next step would be to reinstall iOS on your device by placing it in Recovery Mode, then choosing Update in iTunes.
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • Problem with home button and "messages" app after upgrade to iOS 4.1

    Hello,
I have noticed two interesting problems with my iPhone 4. I am not sure if it is in conjunction with the upgrade to the iOS 4.1 software, but I did not notice the problem prior to this. Both of these problems are very odd and are hit or miss. I have tried restoring and the problem is still present. Also, since both problems have presented at the same time, that is why I am starting to believe it is not hardware...
Problem 1: The home button has become considerably unresponsive. This is not all the time, but it does happen a lot. Sometimes it won't work for about 5-8 clicks and I have to use the power button to access the phone.
Problem 2: When composing a new text message the cursor would always default into the "To:" section of the app which allows you to easily type what contact you are trying to message. However, I am having the issue now occasionally when I am in the messages app and select to compose a new text message that the cursor now defaults into the chat box (where you type your actual message). This is very annoying and I know that this is not the intended behavior of this.
Please let me know if anyone has experienced similar issues and can provide me with some feedback.

I have not experienced the same.
I have tried restoring and the problem is still present.
You restored from your iPhone's backup, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup?
If whatever software problem is causing this is included with your iPhone's backup, restoring from the backup will also restore the problem.
Try restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup to see if this makes any difference. If not, more than likely your iPhone has a hardware problem.

Need resolution on why FaceTime and message apps are not accepting my password after loading ios 7.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • IOS 5.1.1 messaging app broken after long message.

So I sent my dad a long message of just "ugh..." with about 50 "h"'s. Now his messaging app is broken, and when you try to open the app it's just a blank screen. And sometimes you can't leave the app without resetting the phone. I've already tried killin gall of his apps, and doing a reboot. He is dead set on not updating to the latest ios (he's not very tech savvy, and doesn't like change). Is there a way I can fix phone with out updating to ios 7?

if you have nothing useful to add, why bother? I'm trying to find a solution to a problem that I KNOW many, many other people are experiencing...
I don't really care much if Apple reads this, I'm just trying to find a solution. Geez.
If you genuinely were just looking for other users help to fix a problem, and weren't expecting Apple to read or respond you wouldn't have titleled this thread as you did.  You wouldn't have said: "I can't imagine this hasn't been noticed by Apple, but the lack of updates and some sort of status to their customers is incredibly irritating. When will this be fixed?" It is YOU who are trolling by deliberately posting inflamatory and misleading statements.
The probolem is clearly in YOUR DEVICE.  Maybe there is a a hardware issue.  However, the other 99.999+% don't have the issue - and we're not bilind, oblivious idiots either.

  • IOS 5 Messaging App on iPad

I have the iPad 1 and a simple Verizon Wireless phone. Will the messaging app in iOS 5 give me a new number or can I link my phone number to the account and have it push me my texts, and when I send texts from it will they show up to my contacts as my regular number? Thanks!

It's not really texting like that - it will send messages between users with iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) ... from what I can tell, it won't deal with your phone number at all and will just show as coming from "John Smith".

  • IOS 8 messages app hangs at random

It's a new iPhone 6, pre-installed with the latest and greatest iOS. The messages app appears to crash or hang at random, and I have to use the "double-click the home button, kill the app" approach to get it working again.
Anything specific I can check for?

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If that does not correct the issue, after killing the app as you refer to it, then create a backup of your device and restore from the backup. If that doesn't do it, then restore as new, not from a backup.

  • Transfer photos and videos from iOS Messages app to Mac

    Hi!
I have an iPad 4 16 GB with iOS 7. There's no secret that I need 5 GB of free space to update to iOS 8. But I don't have such amount of megabytes to install new iOS due to small size of my iPad's storage. However I noticed that Messages app took 2.2 GB of iPad's capacity and it's full of photos and videos sent to me from my friends. I really don't want to lose this data, but saving all of those photos and videos to camera roll and then transferring to Mac will take forever. Is there any way to batch this process?
And also I have similar question about Mail's app attachments. How can I delete all media from emails that stored in my iPad? I mean not delete them right from my email account (I want to keep them on Gmail's server) but from iPad.
    Thanks in advance!
Sorry for my English if there were any mistakes.

  • (Crucial)iOS 8 message app conversation archive/delete order

I upgraded to iOS8 from 7 and the message app is different when I delete messages.
in iOS 7 when you delete a message, the conversation order goes back to the last existing text. for example if you delete some text in an existing conversation, this conversation will be fall behind newer text you sent after the last existing text you have.
for iOS8 however, after I deleted texts from a recent conversation and the last existing text in that convo was something i sent two weeks ago, the convo is still all the way on top when i have other convo from minutes ago.
I don't know if I explained this clear enough, it is supposed to be like this, it doesn't make any sense.
in iOS8 the text conversation order isn't based on the last existing text time stamp, but instead is using the actual order convo order even if the text doesnt exist anymore. Maybe this explains it better.
This is a crucial issue and I have not seen anyone address it. I hope it gets fixed soon.

No, there is no way to change back to the way things were under the previous version.
