IOS 7 on iPhone 5 classic -- Battery Issues?

I might as well start this since somebody inevitably will.
I am niticing in the first hours after updating to iOS 7 that the battery seems to be draining faster than normal.  However I don't want to start a panic, because somebody says this about every single update, and it is hardly ever a real problem.
I suspect that the battery meter may need to recalibrate.  I had my phone plugged in and at 100% when I started the update, and after the update it showed 97% -- still plugged in.  Also, I have been using it constantly since the update, rearranging icons in the new folders, checking out the new ringtones and wallpapers, downloading updated apps, etc., so I'm sure that contributes.  Also, my phone is reloading web pages photos from photostream, and other remote settings that were wiped out in the update, so I'm hoping after a time battery usage will go back to normal.
Anyone else have a similar experience?

Okay it seems I was right.
After I originaly posted here I unplugged my phone and let it drain to about 30% before charging it back up to full.  I went home and my 5 year old son and I played on it, including an pretty memory intensive human anatomy app for kids -- sometimges plugged in, sometimes not.  Used it A LOT last night, playing with settings, cheking out the new auto update feature, notifications, etc.  I didn't end up turning any of the new features off in settings, and even enabled a few new features.  Then, as usual, I plugged it in when I went to bed and let it run a clock/alarm program (Rise) all night.
This morning I drove to work (about 20 minutes) with turn-by-turn navigation running and a podcast playing in the background -- not plugged in to power.  When I got to work the battery showed 98%.  Leaving the phone unplugged, I have been playing that video podast for half an hour -- with a pause for a phone call set up by Siri -- and battery is currently showing 93%.
I think it's going to be okay.  Everybody breathe.

  • IOS 5.1 and iPhone 4S - battery issues resolved?

Has the 5.1 update resolved your battery issues or created any new ones?
I just updated mine, and had to rush out the door so I couldn't test properly- I couldn't reset all settings to factory or recharge the phone to 100% but as is, so far no improvement at all. I wouldn't say I have the issue as bad as some others as my 4S lasts about the same as my windows phone (HD 7 - amazing phone if anyone wants a second phone or a change from ios, Android ***** so hard it hurts) and my old 3GS used to get after i updated it to 4.1 which was really bad, except I don't get so much "phantom drain" as that did. I do know that it could be much better as when I've reset my settings to factory before I've got a much better life span (what I'd expect from a smartphone) for a day or so before getting the bad battery again.
Any news, tips or findings? How has ios5.1 affected your 4S or previous model iPhone?

  • [Iphone 5] update to ios 6.0.1 - battery issue, fix please :(

I have already turned off Siri, Location Services, Notifications
After update to iOS 6.0.1, battery drain very quickly
    Something wrong with my phone?

My recommendation having tried all the obvious is send the iPhone 5 back  to Apple -  Wait for Apple to fix the problems and then buy a new iPhone 5.
I have been buying apple products for over 25 years, I never experienced such a fundamental problem.
Battery drain: 100% to 40% in 4 hours - 100% to 10% 12 hours overnight on standby - with wi-fi off (installed with the same Apps as the 4s with lasted 3-4 days in general use.)
Apple support are either very helpful, or totally dismissive... this morning I was offered "12 hours use is acceptable" as a final word from Apple Support.
The phone is on its way back to Apple, and I'm happily back on my 4s
This is the first and last time I break my purchasing rule when buying from Apple, 'never buy the first version of any Apple product - wait for them to get it right.

  • Semi-Scientific Test on iPhone 4S Battery Issue w/two iPhone 4Ss

    All,
My wife and I ordered identical 16 GB iPhone 4Ss. They were set up the same way. From the very start, I could tell that her battery was outperforming mine.
After a day of turning off and on various settings, from Location Services, to Siri, to iTunes settings, etc. I still noticed a huge gap in stand-by performance. I was losing 1% per 10 minutes, her phone was not.
Today, we had similiar usage with similar network characteristics (WiFi, decent 3G coverage) starting from a full charge (100%). After 8 hours, her phone still had 52% remaining. Mine died on the way home from work.
So tonight, I performed a test. I plugged both phones up and allowed them to fully charge to 100%. While plugged up, I ensured each setting on the phone were identical, including the number of Exchange accounts, brightness level, etc. At 9pm CDT, I unplugged them. My phone took a long time to get from 99% to 100%, her phone didn't. Mine also went to 99% upon unplug, her's didn't.
Neither phone was used at all, stayed completely in stand-by mode. At 10:15pm CDT, ...her phone remains at 100%. Mine is now at 92%. That's roughly 1% every 10 minutes on my phone, same thing I saw earlier in the day.
I think this, for me at least, confirms the diverse results folks are seeing. Some folks are seeing major battery issues, some are seeing better battery life over other iOS devices. It just so happens in our house, we have one of each. Why would two identical phones behave so differently? I've exahusted all possible options on my phone, including the recently posted attempt at deleting e-mail accounts and resetting network settings.
Does Apple recommend that I do a restore on my phone? I am trying to do so, but I am having issues re-downloading iOS 5. If I still see the same battery drain, I believe I will take this into the Genius bar.
I do believe it's time that Apple address this battery issue. I for one, based on experience, believe it's real, and could be a manufacturing defect. I don't know how else to explain two identical phones having vastly different stand-by results if my restore fails to fix the issue.

After spending 2 days troubleshooting I have found my battery drain culprit. When I turn my wifi on it coninuously disconnects and reconnects to my network. This was draining my battery about 1% every 4 minutes. I went through all the turn this stuff off, reset network settings, setup phone as new, helped some but still had the issue. This morning I set mine and my wife's up the same, she went to work and was playing music on the way in. Still had 100% after 40 minutes. I was at home with wifi on and dropped to 90%.
I charged my battery back up, turned wifi off and now after an hour still have 100%. This is with siri on, icloud on, notifications on, etc.
Can anyone else confirn this is an issue for them. I am trying to determine if it is hardware or software related.
    Thanks

  • Ios 7.0.4 battery issue and DFU mode restore

Hi guys. My iphone has an issue with its battery since i updated my iphone from ios 6.0.2 to 7.0.1 until now ios 7.0.4. I have tried many things, like turn off parallax, background app refresh, location service, mail to fetch, air drop, bluetooth, celular data, delete icloud back up from iphone, delete email acount, reset all setting, restore from back up, restore and set it as new phone, but all thoose things didn't help. Now I loose 1% for 3 minutes. Before thoose update i loose 1% about 6 minutes.
But i have been oberseving so far to know what is causing this issue. This morning i did the DFU mode restore, exatcly not recovery mode restore. After DFU restore completed, i watched every each percent of my battery begun increases to 4,30 minutes while using internet via safari. After that i restored again from my itunes backup, and the battery back to 1 % / 3 minutes while using safari with the same setting. This is first time my battery increases, and my first time i used the dfu mode restore. So far i always using itunes restore.
I guess there are something make the battery drained. I think that icloud data and email account causes this issue. But when i try delete manually my two email accounts and icloud data backup. My battery still 1% / 3 minutes.
So, are you guys have some experiences? Any ideas?
    Thanks before, regards from Indonesia

I'am sorry. I'am using ios 7.0.4 now. I forget to set it before i send that post

  • IOS 6 iPhone 4s battery

    when solution coming.....................

My phone is almost brand new and the battery life with IO6 In one word *****!
The apps are exactly the same as with IOS5.1.1 except for whatever apple did changed maps etc.  I'm fine with the changes.   Except the battery will NOT stayed charged.  Making my phone useless.
I love my iPhone when it holds a charge.  I never had an issue with the IOS 5.1.1 battery life great!

  • IPhone 3GS Battery Issue

    Hi there.
My iPhone 3GS is cutting out after 10-15 mins when making a phone call showing the battery logo red and then re-booting when the battery is full, when it re-boots the battery is fine. The iPhone currently has ios 5.1, is it to do with that or something else?
    Many thanks, Lewis

Sounds like you could have a corrupt app that isn't properly shut down after you hit the home button...
    A couple things to try...
Hard reset - Hold sleep/wake and home down at same time until you see the white Apple symbol...then release both and allow for reboot.
Restore - in order to fix OS bugs...you need to choose the "set up as new iPhone" option when prompted... so since this starts clean, ensure that all contacts, calendar events, email account, notes, photos etc are backed up either in iTunes or in their background programs like Mail or iPhoto etc... Then once you have selected to restore and it wipes the phone, choosing the "set up as new iPhone" will get rid of the OS bug that could be causing the battery issue...
Of course try the cycle that I mention above first... along with the hard reset it may resolve and not require the full restore....

  • IOS 5.1.1 Battery issues Fixed?

Title, in iOS 5.1 there were still battery bugs, are they fixed in 5.1.1? Or are they worse?

For me, going to 5.1.1 made my battery worse. When I had 5.1, I could use my phone (iPhone 4) heavily during the day (voice, text, safari, apps, etc) and finish the day with 50-60% battery. I updated to 5.1.1 yesterday and can watch the drain happen.
For instance, this morning I took my phone off the charger (100%). After an hour off the charger with very light safari usage (over wifi) and a text conversation, my battery had depleted to 92%. It has been off the charger for 2.5hrs and I am currently at 80%. So I'm losing battery at a rate of roughly 10% per hour. I'm planning to restore back to 5.1 when I get home this evening, I'll never survive a workday at this pace. I haven't used voice yet, which I did yesterday. I lost 10% battery during a 10-15 min conversation.
So, mathematically, if the drain continues and I use voice for a 20 min conversation, my battery will be completely dead in an 8 hr day. Makes doing business hard. So, if apple doesn't solve the mysterious ghost drain by the time my upgrade comes around, I'm going Android. I've had enough of this. My iPad works great, but the iPhone hemorrhages battery life ever since iOS 5. 5.1 slowed it down some, but 5.1.1 opened the floodgates again in my case.

  • IPhone 3Gs Battery Issues or Not? WunderRadio or IheartRadio

Does anyone use their Iphone to listen to IHeartRadio or WunderRadio? I like to use it at work to listen to different stations but it makes me wonder if my battery is ok. I have wifi turned off and 3g off so I am using EDGE and I am getting about 4.5 hours usage with 22% battery remaining. Does this seem right or should I hook up my iphone via USB while at work to save battery?
This is my second 3gs as my first definetly had battery issues.

well, as for battery consumption, EDGE is much better (12hrs advertised) compared to 3G (5hrs).
4.5hrs seems not so much, but it could be normal, internet drains the battery pretty heavily. if your phone behaves normal otherwise I wouldn't worry about it

  • IPhone 4S iOS 5.1.1 battery issue

Hi, i have an iPhone 4S 16GB iOS 5.1.1 and have terrible battery life.
I fully charged my phone to 100% this morning and it has drained 70% in just 7 hours under very minimal usage [wifi OFF - cellular data OFF - bluetooth OFF - photo stream OFF - location services OFF] also i have only 15 downloaded apps and about 400 songs after a major cleanup.
I also factory restored my device the day before and had done multiple hard resets, so please don't give me advice about that. I am wondering if there is any fix because atm i am certainly leaving apple if there is no fix

  • IOS 8.1 massive battery issue

Since I've been updating my 5s with latest 8.1, my 5s now facing a battery drainage problem!! Massive! I've been charged full 100% battery and with only 1 hour while playing slight wechat only, it draining like **** until 70%.. And heating like oven!! This never happen before! Even before i've been playing with heavy use of wechat, beetalk, games and video, it still remain 84%.. Now it's draining like water leaking.... iOS 7 is always better 1001% compare to iOS 8.. There is always a new problems!! U guys solved 10 problems/bugs, but again u guys will create 2 to 3 new problems!! What's wrong with Apple nowaday?! Think about to moving on to Samsung!

I'm also seeing something like this. I believe I may have isolated one issue that Apple have verbally acknowledged: Re: Did iOS8.1 fixed the battery draining and heating problem with iPhone 5s?
However i wonder if it's more general. Just a few hours browsing on my phone with very little running in the background uses a lot of battery. I go to use settings and it tells me that Safari has used 45% of th battery in a few hours. This never happened on ios7.
After each release of iOS there is usually a load of people moaning about battery life who don't understand the options of how their phone works but it does feel like there is a genuine issue here. A lot of the noise seems to be coming from iPhone5S owners, I wonder if the more General wifi issues are causing problems elsewhere......
i Don't suspect it will be that long before we see a patch.

  • IOS 7.0.4 battery issue on my 4s

    I normally don't post,
I can't help but voice my frustration.
My wife and I have the same type iphone, 4s
I always update before she does.
Recently updated my iphone 4s to iOS 7.0.4 around Nov. 22,
Since my update I've had a problem getting through the day (under minimal use) after a full charge overnight.
It may be coincidence but I doubt it, since my wife's phone is working just fine the same as always (even with iOS 7.0.3).
Reading all the problems others have had that are similar to mine, i think this is a sign that apple has lost its way.
I have read (and attempted) various methods to save battery via adjusting settings and resets, but seriously?
My iphone should not become a paper weight just because I update the os!
I will have a hard time convincing myself to buy any more apple products in the future.
    -I miss Steve Jobs

I did a complete reset, but then I restored from last back up file.
Even after I did all that there was no significant difference.
At this point I figured it was not the OS causing my severe battery drain.
Then I decided to wipe out all of my apps, and start with only the default apps.
After I did this I noticed a significant increase battery life.
I realized that one of the apps that I was running must have been the culprit.
(Unfortunately I don’t know which one it was…)
Now, I can go a solid two days (mostly on standby, close to what I was used to) without having to charge my phone.
I wish I knew exactly which app was causing my issue but since I wiped out so many, I can't say specifically which one was the culprit.
I have also been more cautious when adding new apps, careful to watch and see as I add them, if they adversely affect my battery life.
    Hope that helps

  • IPhone 6 Battery Issues

Has anybody had any issues with their iPhone 6
Lately? Primarily since the iOS 8.4 update? My battery charges very quickly and drains very quickly.
I've already done the usual hard reset, taking emails off push, waiting for the batter to go below 5% or turn itself off, restored it. Also, sometimes it turns itself off when it is at 5% whereas it used to turn itself off at 1% or 2%.

It may be that you have a rogue app which is using an unusual amount of battery (one which continually runs in the background or continually uses location services when it shouldn't, for example).
My advice, and as suggested, would be to restore the iPhone using iTunes, and to set it up as a new phone. You will need to reinstall your apps, but I've found that it's the most effective way to sort out a lot of issues such as this.
If that still doesn't work, have a chat with an Apple advisor on their website - they will send you a link which will enable you to send them a diagnostic report at the touch of a button. They will soon be able to see if it's a hardware issue and whether a replacement handset might be in order. I did it with my 6 Plus when I noticed my camera was a bit blurry, and they replaced it no questions asked.
    Hope this helps a bit

  • IPhone 3GS battery issue - instant drain

    Hi everybody,
I have an issue with my trust 3GS - it just drops dead when a certain battery level is met (or so I think as it's very hard to reproduce).
In a nutshell: when my battery hits around 20% the iPhone can shut down instantly.  When you press the power (top) button, nothing comes up on the screen, when you plug it into AC you can see the "charging" screen but it feels like it's taking longer than usual.
    Anybody lived the same thing?
I'm thinking a 3.5 year old phone may be the source of the issue but it's not reproducable, it just happens.  Thinking of ordering a new battery from a place like Dealextreme and see how that goes.
Suggestions are most welcome - thanks in advance!
    BTW running iOS 5.1 (latest)

take it to an apple store and ask them to replace the battery for you,at a cost of course.

  • IPhone 4s - Battery issue and poor voice quality

I had bought my iPhone in May this year. It was working fine till i think a week back battery started to drain quickly at 10% every hour. I have configured office exchange account for mail and accessing global exchange contacts, Google account as exchange for contact sync and iCloud. i dont keep any contacts on exchange, keep in Gmail only. Was Android user earlier.
I read a lot of posts and tried all solutions such as turning off timezone service in location, turn off and delete all email accounts, kept manual sync for emails, ran the battery down till switch off and charging back to 100%, removed apps i doubted could be syncing data in background, turned off locaiton service totally, turned off calendar, turned calendar notifications, turned of iCloud reminder, notes but no effect. Wifi and Siri are also off.
I notice today that I am getting small circle near operator name rather than E symbol (for edge)and at the same time voice quality of person on other end is bad too, can hear small cracking , clicking sounds, voice breaks. Otther person can hear me properly. I get back E symbol in some different place than my desk. I havent changed my desk so thats not a possibility either.
Someone had suggested queued network thread with exchange can cause the issue so Installed System Activity Monitor app but it doesn't show battery graph or which process is taking CPU or network time. Moreover, it shows 4-5% less battery level than on top in disharging mode !!
Used to get good stats of what is eating the battery in my old HTC Desire but iPhone doesn't offer such feature to diagnosis. Ideally should not be required if phone works as expected.
What do I need to do to get battery life and voice quality back? I will try voice again at home just to rule out bad network at work.
    Thanks,
    Ashish

Well, most of what you did is black magic, and has nothing to do with battery drain. But we have no way of knowing how your battery life is below what you think it should be. What are you using it for, what apps do you have, and how much Usage life do you get (settings/general/usage).
