IOS iPhoto dslr size reduction issue

I have transferred full size photos from nikon dslr to ipad both through itunes synch (I think this process "optimizes" the photos and reduces their size) and also through various apps that transfer full resolution photos wirelessly from pc to ipad.  I have not purchased the camera connection kit because I think this issue may still exist.
Issue:  Following transfer of full size photos (for example a 4928 x 3264 6.20 mb 16.1 mp), when it is opened in iOS iPhoto, the size is 3.1, but pixel number remains the same.
I'm not shooting RAW, these are jpegs. Why the loss???
What causes the huge drop in photo size, but apparently keeping the same number of pixels. It makes no sense.
Thanks in advance.
iPad 2, iOS 6.1.3

I'm not certain whether the information regarding My Photo Stream is applicable.  According to the iPhoto for iOS app, the pixel count remains the same.  I'd like to be able to edit full size photos in the iPhoto app on iOS.
It may be that OPENING the file in iPhoto for iOS converts the photos to the smaller size.  This would make sense because in iPhoto for iOS, the edited file is not saved/viewable in the camera roll until it is exported there.  So, I'm "guessing" this is what is going on (I'm assuming the sizes, etc from my opening post):
1)     On transfer to the iPad, a full size photo is placed in the camera roll;
2)     When the photo is opened in iPhoto for editing, it is compressed somehow to half-size (I don't know what this would actually be called), but the full-size photo remains saved on the camera roll;
3)     Photo that is edited in iPhoto is the half size (compressed, converted, modified...whatever you may call it);
4)     When the edited photo is exported to the Camera Roll, a new file is created in the Camera Roll to reflect the half-size photo.
So, looking back to my original question, can one edit full-size photos in iPhoto for iOS, I'm been unable to find a what to do it.  It seems that iPhoto for iOS is arbitrarily cutting all photos in half....regardless of their original size.  Very strange.
I agree, this is truly an orgonizational nightmare, but I'd just like a way to edit original photos on the iPad (away from home), then been able to transfer those full-size edited photos back to my computer when I return.
It appears impossible...
I'd be willing to try a different photo editing app, but I've been unable to find one as comprehensive on the iPad.

  • Does photo size reduction for e-mailing degrade photos?

In using iPhoto to send photos by e-mail one has the option of reducing the size of these photos from actual size to small, medium, or large size in order to transmit them more quickly, but what effect does this size reduction have on the quality of the photos?
I suspect that the size reduction degrades the images, but I have not been able to obtain any sort of definitive information on this subject, even when I contacted Apple tech help. Is there some knowledgeable person on board who can give us the story on this issue?
I like the idea of transmitting photos as fast as possible, but not if it means degrading the images by reducing their size to speed up the e-mail process.

    Smtr,
Thanks for your helpful reply. I wasn’t concerned about the original photo retained in my library, but only about the reduced-size copy transmitted by e-mail.
I’m amazed at how much one can reduce the photo size for transmitting by e-mail. I just randomly selected a 3.3 MB JPEG image which can be squeezed down to only 63 KB by selecting the Small size in the Mail Photo window. I calculate that the reduced size photo would be only 1/52 the size of the original. I assume that the 63 KB image would be a very poor candidate for producing a print! I also assume that the 63 KB image, when viewed by the recipient on his monitor, would be a lot smaller than it would be if I sent him a copy at Actual Size.
Suppose the the recipient’s e-mail system could not handle the Actual Size 3.3 MB photo, so I send him a Large copy (414 KB) or a Medium copy (122 KB). Would either of those reduced-size photos produce a decent print as small as 4 X 6? I am trying to get a feel for how far I could squeeze down the size of one of my photos for e-mail transmittal before it becomes unsuitable for producing even a small print.
    Comments?

  • Photo size reduction in iWeb

When I transfer photos into iWeb from iphoto how much reduction in size does it automatically make, I only have a website with 100Mb capacity

What type of page are you adding the photos to?  If you're dragging a photo onto a regular page and resizing then the resulting photo will be rather small, particularly if you have iWeb's preferences set to optimize photos:
If you're adding photos to a slideshow or a My Albums page the size will depend on if you allow downloading of the photos and what size to download as determined in the Inspector/Photos/Slideshow pane:
If you don't allow downloading by setting the size to none then each photo in the slideshow will occupy approx. 70 KB of disc space. This photo page with 50 photos is 21.5 MB in size.
If you use a site optimizing application like Web Site Maestro  you can reduce the site's size by up to 50%. My Demo 3 site went from 55 MB to 32 MB in size.  My Old Toad's Tutorials site went from 10.7 MB to 7.2 MB.
The reduction in size depends on the type of pages you have.  If you have lots of image files, jpeg, or movie files, they can't be reduced further so you won't see a big difference.  However, png and html files can be reduced further.
I don't know how much you're paying for the service, if at all, but there are other 3rd party hosting services that you can get for about $3.95/mo that have unlimited capacity, one free domain name, etc. Just something to consider.

  • IPhoto library size smaller than original collection

I've seen several iphoto library size questions but nothing seems close to my own situation.  If anything, it's mostly the other way around. Apologies if this has already been covered but I've searched long and hard!
I have my photo collection in two places- an iPhoto library and separately stored in a finder folder called "Photos".  For backup purposes and in case anything goes wrong, I prefer to have them doubled up like this.  My iPhoto library is 7.96GB when viewed in finder, whereas the folder "Photos" is 8.95GB.  The same number of images are in both.  Can anyone shed some light onto why this would be the case?  There are no other items contained in either collection, movies etc., just the same amount of photos in various folders within folders.  Surely the iPhoto library would be at least as big, if not bigger with thumbs, photos modified etc?

I would expect the iPhoto Library to be significantly bigger than the folder tree so something is not right.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
BTW:  Storing the files in a folder tree and iPhoto on the same disk is a waste of space and not a back up. A back up needs to be on a separate disk, at least. The most common problems are disk issues. Such a set up offer no protection whatever from that.

  • How can videos be uploaded from iOS iPhoto to Flickr when they cannot be selected. (The Flickr iPhone app always gives a vague error message when video upload is attempted.)

I am trying to upload short MP4 videos from my iPad 2 running iOS 5.1.1 to Flickr. These videos were taken on a Panasonic FZ150, and I am able to upload videos from this camera from my iMac when I am at home. (I am currently thousands of miles from home, which is why I want to upload from my iPad.)
I can upload photos from iOS iPhoto, but when I select videos, the selection count does not increase, and so they are not uploaded.
There is no Flickr app for iPad, but I tried the iPhone app, and was able to upload photos. However, when I try to upload videos, I always immediately get the error message:
"An error occurred. We could not upload your video. Please try again."
Frustratingly, there is no indication of what the error is.
Finally, I tried the Flickr website uploader page, but all the "Choose File" buttons were dimmed, so apparently there is no attempt to integrate ithis page with iPad,.
I have had the same experience several times over the last few weeks in different locations, including private homes and hotels, none of them corporate offices with strong firewalls, and I am not running any firewall software other than standard iOS.
I welcome any suggestions, workarounds, etc., that will enable me to upload videos from IPad to Flickr.

    KRDHarris-
I am not familiar with Flickr, but found their support page at <Flickr Support>. You may get better help there than here.  I get the impression that the App is somewhat buggy.
The iTunes preview page indicates the App is for iPad as well as the iPhone.  <Flickr App Preview>

  • All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • What kind of processing does "export" do?  (i.e., why the huge size reduction of the .mov?)

I have a .mov video I imported into imovie 11.  All I did was add a title bar at the beginning.  The original video size was 2.35GB.  The exported .mov is 985MB.  Why the size reduction?  What processing happens on export?  Does it affect quality.  It was originally 1080p, 24 fps, .mov file from my video camera.

iMovie converted your file to a "more compressed" codec on export.  Most likely when iMovie imported your video file, it converted your video file to AIC, a native codec that iMovie works with comfortably on high definition video (before importing into iMovie, your video file could be also quite small).  AIC file takes a lot of space.  Exported video files are for viewing, not for editing, so by default iMovie compresses the file to reduce the size.  In fact you can change the default settings on export in iMovie (in menu "Share", "Export using Quicktime...").
Yes it affects quality, but usually you won't notice the difference.  It depends on your viewing facility.  Unless you have a high-end projector with 150' high-end screen, or a great video card with Eizo monitor, don't bother.  In any case, you can always adjust the iMovie export settings to satisfy your eyes.

On my iphone 5 , i m facing slow wifi issue. Ios 6.0.2 didnt resloved it.any one please told me ios 6.1 fixed this issue or not b/c i m right now not in a mood to install the ios 6 .

It seems that people experience slow wifi on iphone with IOS 6 under slightly different circumstances.
Some have slow/choppy video streaming, some have problems with large dropbox files, some with app store and some with podcasts.
    Which is your problem AdeelRasheed?
Me personally, I have download speed when on wifi.
    But only when downloading podcasts...
    Running 6.0.1 or 6.1 on iPhone 5, iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
On WIFI I can download a 45 mb app from the appstore in less than a minute. I can stream Youtube and Netflix with no problems. Internet browsing - no problems.
But downloading podcasts with Instacast 3, Downcast or the Apple Podcast app happens at a rate of 20-80 kb/s when on WIFI. As soon as I switch to 3g ( 4g/LTE is not yet available from my local provider) my download speed goes to between 300kb/s and 2 mb/s.
    Anyone else have this problem?

  • Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable?

Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable? Automatic mode makes blue blobs that cover iris and even eyelid! Manual mode gives black dots, not at all hte shape of a oerson's iris as seen in a picture.

And again the answer is simply
THere is no fix - that is the way it works - you can post as many times as you want but it will not change the fact that that is the way that iPhoto works
    No fix
    No work around
It is what it is - nothing more - nothing less

  • IPhoto file sizes and a Trash mystery

I hope someone who knows more than I do about iPhoto file sizes can help solve a mystery for me. I'm not a Mac novice; I have been using them exclusively for more than 20 years, but I haven't come across this phenomenon before.
For a few months now, I have been keeping an eye on 500GB iMac's hard drive as it has been filling. When it reached 80GB of space remaining earlier this month, I figured that soon I would have to start tidying up or moving stuff to an external hard drive to reclaim space on the computer. Then, one morning last week, I switched on the iMac and discovered that the whole 80GB had vanished overnight and the disk was full. Weird, but not a disaster.
The biggest single file on the drive was my iPhoto library, at 120GB. That seemed large for a library containing 7,512 photos (none RAW), but I decided to move it off to an external anyway. The process ran smoothly. It's now safely on an external drive and iPhoto has been working well. After a few days of reassuring myself that all was fine, I decided to trash the original library on the iMac.
Here's the mystery (at least it's a mystery to me): The library of 7,512 pictures produced more than 65,000 items to delete in the Trash. Some of these items are taking up to 20 minutes each to delete. The trash has been emptying now for more than 24 hours; I have recovered 100GB of the 120GB and there are still 15,270 items to be killed.
Does that sound odd to anyone? If not, why are nine times as many files being killed as there are pictures in the library? And why would 80GB of space have vanished overnight?

    That sounds very off indeed.
For comaprison. I have a library here with 30K+ items, some raw, some video, mostly Jpegs and that's 83.1 gigs. So a library of 120gigs for 7.5 k shots is well out of line.
My guess is that something was been written into the Library by some other agent - for instance, a back up app writing a back up into the Library or something odd like that.
Go to your working Library on the External. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
In List View, sort it on Size. What's the biggest item(s)?

  • RE: File Size Reduction by Hiding Layers

I've come across the trick of hiding layers to reduce file size, however am wondering exactly what is happening.
    Here's my situation.
    20.6mb PSD
Hiding the layers reduces the file to 13.1mb
I've been told that the file reduction is because preview images are no longer being generated.
Could preview images really be accounting for nearly 40% of the file size?
To test this I saved this file as a JPG at 100% quality (not for web) and yielded a 1.34mb file.
This leaves me with roughly 6.6mb of file reduction unaccounted for.
Is something else being siltently compressed/compatibility settings not included/other info being excluded from the file when layers are hidden?
    NOTE:
I need to make sure my files have maximum compatibility for opening them in Lightroom and other programs that open PSDs like Painter - so compatibility settings are important.
I need to make sure that everything will still be setup properly for print and no compression is ocurring.
Could some please tell me what exactly is excluded from a file to lower the file size 40% when hiding layers?
    Thanks!

Similar, yes... but that still doesn't answer my question
    2400x1600px image
    only a background layer
    RGB 8bits/channel 72dpi
    19.2mb
    ...hide layer = 9.91mb
.. white layer on top = 10.1mb (similar results as you said)
    DIFFERENCE: 9.29mb
So, back to the question. Is it REALLY just the thumbnail/preview image taking up 50% of the file size in this case? Seriously? I would think that Adobe would be a bit more efficient with saving preview images. So...back to my earlier test to try and get a comparison of what a full size/full quality preview image would weigh, I've saved this image as:
high res JPG (not for web) = 1.55mb
    compressed (layered) PNG = 3.64mb
    compressed (layered) TIFF = 3.99mb
I also tried saving different combinations of layered/compressed versions of the PNG and TIFF files (although I think JPGs would be a more accurate representation of preview image file size). Uncompressed PNGs and TIFFs were far too large for the 9.29mb difference.
These don't even come within a couple of mb of the file size reduction from hiding the layers....
    So, my question:
If hiding a layer is reducing the file size by supposedely rendering less pixel data to the preview images, then
    - why don't any of these "mock" preview image situations come close to accounting for the size in reduction?
Even a layered lossless compressed TIFF still leaves an unexplained 5mb+  (9.29mb total file size reduction - 3.99mb TIFF)
I'm curious and need this for a specific (yet reocurring) situation at the workplace.
It really seems like there's something else that is happening when you save a file with layers hidden.
Is there any other possible scenarios (generating mutliple thumbnail sizes/sets, metadata based on pixel data, other information based on pixel data, silent compression, settings changing, etc) that could possibly explain this?

  • 16x9, 300ppi, 75mb tiff file, LR converts to 1mb jpg.  Export in LR 5 is being done at 100%, no file size reduction.

I've got a 16x9, 300ppi, 75mb tiff file that LR converts to 1mb jpg.  Export in LR 5 is being done at 100%, no file size reduction.  Can't figure out why it is downsizing so small?  Even upsized to 420ppi in PS and the export was still only 2mb. Stock agency wants 3mb .jpg minimum. Any help appreciated.  Thanks.

Using PS CS6 with NO changes applied to the original TIFF the JPEG file size is 8.686 MB. The slightly larger file size is due to metadata differences between LR and PS.
Both Adobe applications (PS CS6 and LR 5.71) are producing near identical and much larger highest quality JPEG files. PS 12 Quality is the same as LR 100.
    SUGGESTION:
    1) Close LR and rename your LR Preferences file by adding the extension .OLD to it:
    Mac OS X
    Preferences
    /Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.Lightroom5.plist.OLD
    Windows 7 & 8
    Preferences
    C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences\Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs.OLD
Reopen LR and it will create a new Preferences file. Try the JPEG Export again using the same settings as I have posted.
    2) If still no change I suggest uninstalling LR, delete the new LR Preferences file created in step #1 above, keep the .OLD Preferences file, and reinstall LR 5.71.
    3) If all is well now close LR and try restoring you original Preferences file by renaming the new Preferences file something like .OLD.OLD and removing .OLD from the original file.

How to delet edited folder? (iOS iPhoto )
Who can teach me? Thanks a lot.

The edited photo album is where the recipes for the edits you made are stored. The Edited folder is created and removed automatically by iPhoto for iOS. It will disappear when there are no edited photos.
If you want to remove the edited photos go to each photo and select revert to Original. That will delete the edited version. Once all edited photos have been Reversted to their original version, the Edited Photos album will disappear.
Of course the next time you edit a photo the album will return.
Note that the Edited Photos album only shows in iPhoto for iOS. It does not appear in the Photos app.
