IPad 2 connects to Wi-Fi on iMac, not to internet

I've had this problem off and on since I got the iPad. All of the discussions I can find about connecting the iPad to the Internet via a computer with an Ethernet connection mention doing things to the router. I do not have a router (that I know of). I am connecting my iPad to the Wi-Fi network that was created on my desktop computer (an iMac running Snow Leopard).
The Ethernet connection from the iMac to the Internet works fine (through a DSL modem).
The iPad is wirelessly connected to this Wi-Fi network.
The iPad _used to_ be able to connect to the Internet via the Wi-Fi network, but it can't now and hasn't been able to for a couple of months. This necessitates me spending money using its cellular data connection.
I have re-set, re-booted and all the other recommended things on the iPad.
For a while, the AirPort connection in Settings>Network on the iMac had a 169 dot something self-assigned IP address and could not connect to the Internet. I got smart and reconfigured it so it now has a manually entered IP address and it now says it's connected to the Internet.
But the iPad still won't connect to the Internet via the Wi-Fi network.
So my questions are:
-- is there something I'm not getting here?
-- would upgrading the iMac to Lion help? I have to do that sometime soon anyway.
-- would having a Time Machine help? I've been backing up to a hard drive.

Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

You might want to try resetting your router and your modem - just unplug the cords, leave them unplugged for about 3-5 minutes and then replug the modem and then the router in that order.
This may or may not correct your problem - call back if it doesn't.

  • IPad connects to free WiFi Hotspots, but NOT on my home WiFi network

First, let me say that I have my iMac and a PC laptop working on my home WiFi network with no problems. My iPad connected to my home WiFi network for several months until about a week ago or so, somewhere around the time that I updated my iPad to OS 4.3.3.
In the General settings section I have reset the NETWORK setting several times to no avail. I changed my network SSID twice, and changed my WAP2 password 3 times. My iMac and PC laptop worked like a charm for each change. But, like I said, my iPad has no issues connecting to free WiFi hotspots like at coffee shops, but "cannot join my Clearwire WiFi network" at home.
My guess is that I have an OS issue, but if anybody knows anything better, please let me know.
    Thank you.

I think the OS issue is with the password because free WiFi hotspots don't require passwords. So, all of my RF circuits are fine. My password is correct because when I changed it in the Clearwire WiMax modem\router, I was able to connect with the new password on my iMac and PC laptop with no problems.
I have a 3 month old Clearwire 4G modem\router. My iPad worked great from the day I installed it. It stopped working around the time that I updated my iPad OS to 4.3.3.
I am hoping that there is an OS fix because I had Clearwire on the phone for over an hour and we re-booted the modem\router several times and reset it to its default values. Again, I have no problems connecting with my iMac or PC laptop. They work like a charm, just like my iPad used to.

  • WINDOWS ON IMAC NOT DETECTING INTERNET CONNECTION

I RECENTLY LOADED WINDOWS XP ON MY IMAC AND THE INTERNET CONNECTION IS NOT WORKING, MY MODEM IS ON WITH ALL CORRESPONDING LIGHTS ON, BUT IN XP NO DEAL, WHEN IN MAC OS X EVERYTHING IS FINE
    PLS ADVISE

Are you using bootcamp or a VM? If you are using Bootcamp did you install the drivers? If you are using VM did you connect the NIC in the VM interface?

  • Why won't my iPad connect wirelessly to all my iMac apps on Lion?

So I've been having an issue that I can't seems to find the answers to in any forums or in any articles online. I've got both an iPad 2 and a brand new iMac with lion 10.7.3.
Everything is up to date, but here's the problem, I can access some things like VNC, iTunes remote, and accessing the iTunes Library via sharing, however, I can't seem to access, any MIDI controls in my Audio MIDI Setup, nor can I access my docs to go.
I've tried remedying all the issues that have come up via the iMac wifi issues that have plagued a lot of other iMacs. The iPad occasionally appears in the MIDI window, but when I attempt to connect, it tells me it can't and to check the address again.
I'm able to still connect with all of the applications with my old MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, but haven't managed to make to correct connections with my iMac.
Any ideas? It's really starting to frustrate me.
    Thanks for any help!

  • My iPad connects to my Wifi, but wont load the internet

My iPad connects to all other wifi connections, but not my orange broadband one at home.
In the network settings it only shows the IP address and subnet mask. It seems like it should have a router information and DNS settings, maybe even search domains too. But I cant add router settings and no idea what to put in the others!
Have also tried reseting network settings, upgrading to iOS 5, rebooting my ipad and restarting it (holding down sleep and home button).
Anyone know how to solve this problem? Maybe I need to ask orange about it? Thanks

    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

  • I can connect to my wireless network but not the internet

Hi. I've had my iBook G4 for just about a year and it's worked fantastically... until recently. My roommate has a PC and a linksys wireless router, and I've always been able to connect wirelessly to the internet until last week. I came home from work one day, and my iBook "saw" our wireless network and could "see" other computers on the network, but could not access the internet. My roommate had no problem accessing the internet through the wi-fi on his Dell laptop. So I zapped my p-ram and fiddled with some settings, but I still had the same problem.
Next I re-installed OS X, and tried again. Still the same issue. Of course, by this time I'm getting frustrated, but then about 12 hours later I decide to try it again and it just works! Like there was never any problem....
So anyway, it worked like a dream for about a week and now I have the same exact problem again! It connects to the network but not the internet. Is this a known problem? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -joe.

i was having the same issue with all my devices. everything would cut out and i would have to reboot my router...my internet service provider is ATT and i have a Uverse router. i went to their online support and i was able to chat with a tech support agent and they ended up changing the channel of my router and that has resolved my problem....i am currently steaming pics from my iphoto library to my apple tv and my wife is streaming music from her iphone at the same time...support tech stated that usually they have the router set to a generic channel that usually has a lot of traffic.

  • My iPad connects to my router but does not open any web page or even download my mail. My router works just fine. My iPod touch is having no problems loading pages. If at all my iPad does open a page, it does so very slowly. It happens with all routers.

It never had any problems before I upgraded to iOS6. Please help!

    Hi adtsalmon,
You can only watch the movie on the device you rented it on. Here's a snippet from the Apple Support site (italics mine):
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
Here's the link to the Movie Rentals FAQs site FYI:

    Hope this helps!

  • Setup Airport Extreme for the home wireless - MacBook Air, Pro, and iPad connect just fine.  Wireless will not work to Windows 7 and Vista machines - network seen, tries to connect, but fails after entering WPA key.

Can't get Windows Vista or Windows 7 laptops to access internet via Airport Extreme.  Works fine with security on MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iPad.  Brand new Airport, bought today.  Windows machines worked fine with existing, relatively modern Cisco home router.    The Windows machines see the wireless network, prompt for password, and then cannot connect.  Have tried all sorts of things with Windows machines, deleted existing networks, etc. even tried guest login with no security on the Airport - no luck.  Windows XP machine directly (wire) connected works fine.  Magic Jack works OK.  Light is green on the front.

Thank you very much for your help @Sunshyn2005!!!!! I think we're good to go now!

  • IMac not sharing internet via wifi

I am trying to share internet eternet connection via iMac's wifi, but did not succeed since yesterday. I've been using this mode for the last two years but it suddenly stopped working.

    Hi, a couple if suggestions...
System Preferences>choose Wifi interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.
    And/or...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

  • Devices connect to wifi (via airport) but not to internet.

Devices (macbook and iphones) which previously connected via our home wifi are no longer working.  They connect to our wfi network fine (or seem to).  This is generated via the airport on our imac, OSX version 10.6.8.
None of the devices will actually connect to the internet via the wifi (although the phones do it fine on 4G).
Thee were some messages about allowing various applications access to network sharing (or something) when I started the mac this morning.  for some of these I clicked "deny" as I did not know why I was seeing them, what the applications were, or really what they meant.  It was out of the blue and seemed a bit odd.   This may have caused the problem.  All the diagnostics I have run, and network rebuilding has not helped.
    Hope someone has some ideas.

Try shutting everything down. Then in order restart your cable/dsl modem, your Airport router and finally your computer. Let each device fully start before powering up the next one.

The computer I set up my Airport express on works fine. But my other laptop in my house connects to the network but not internet. Why is this?

  • I'm connected to my wifi, but do not have Internet connection.

When trying to connect to my wifi network, it shows a exclamation point in front of the wifi strength, when I click n it it shows that I don't have Internet connection. I've tried to restart my modem and router. I've restarted all of my apple devices. But it still doesn't have Internet. When I open the network preferences it says that it doesn't have an ip and generates on for me. Anyone got any suggestions?

You might want to try resetting your router and your modem - just unplug the cords, leave them unplugged for about 3-5 minutes and then replug the modem and then the router in that order.
This may or may not correct your problem - call back if it doesn't.

  • Intenet Recovery take initial start up data from somewhere on my iMac, not from Internet

    Hello!
Was experimenting with Internet Recovery (Ctrl+R on startup) on my iMac.
After a few reintalls a spinning globe that usually appeared on the initial phase didnt appear anymore. Instead of that the Utilities load right after the initial startup procedure (after apple).
Anyone knows why this happened? Ever before during internet restoration a spinnig globe was shown. No amny more - Utilities start right after the apple on startup. Where are they stored?

The spinning globe only appears if you use internet recovery (command + option + R) and it directly accesses Apple's servers. You can use that if you need to reinstall the original OS version or have a blank drive (after installing a new hard drive for instance). The regular recovery is a hidden partition on your Mac made to do what you need it to do when you boot into it by hitting command + R and it will install the current OS version.
