Ipad 3rd generation, iOS 8, home button issue, with fix

I have seen a lot of iOS 8 home button issues on phones but not much on the iPad.  But I started having problems right away.  Clicking would not get be back to the home screen.  Clicking did not get me out of program.  It was all intermittent too.
I found a good you tube video about ipad home button issues. First I tried recalibrating the home button.  You hold the power switch down till you get the slider to turn off the iPad.  then let go and hold down the home button till the screen changes.  that seemed to fix most of the problems for a couple hours.  But then it came back.
Next tried putting a drop of isopropyl Alcohol on my finger tip and pushed down and up on the outside edge of the home button, all around the circumference.  Then did the cal again.  That seems to have worked permanently.
iOS 8 is still slow but I guess everyone has that on anything older than a year.

Like I said, I was aware it was possible to access the apps through the finder, but the question revolved around how to recover the quick launch app icons for certain vanished apps.
Wow, kind of a snotty response to someone who was taking their own time to offer help.  Whether you thought it was helpful or not, didn't deserve such an unkind retort.  Maybe when you realize we all just users here trying to help others like you, who have issues and we don't get anything in return for the countless hours some people here spend offering that assistance, you'll maybe be a little less quick to be critical.
Just sayin.......
Oh and Meg offered the right answer.  Put your Apps in Folders, which will create extra space for the apps which have disappeared.

Running my 3rd generation iPad on iOS 7.0.4, I saturated all the available iPad screen space (which would be the 15 home screens or desktop worth of space) with apps, and the apps that got bumped out of the last screen space mysteriously disappeared. Where are those missing quick lauch app icons now? The apps are still installed and can be searched/accessed through the finder, but they no longer have a user friendly access. How can I solve this problem?

  • IPad 3 and iOS 6 - Home button not working

Since updating to iOS 6, the iPad 3's home button has been acting quite flaky. It often stops responding all together, forcing me to use gestures to quit apps or to access the multitasking panel. I've tried rebooting the device and re-calibrating the home button but the improvements are short-lived.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Kenroy

I'm having the exact same problem, and it's quite annoying because I now have to press the home button on my ipad 3 about 20 times before I can get it to respond, and even then it freezes up. It seemed to have started after upgrading to iOS6, which is really kind of disappointing because you guys (at Apple) charge a lot of money for these devices and create quite a build up prior to releasing new features promising all these new/improved features, but there's always a flaw that overshadows the goo things isn't it? Shouldn't you guys have tested all these things prior to giving us some faulty software and making us go out of our way to try and get these things sorted out for us at apple stores or whatever? I bought my ipad three not two months ago, paid $700 for, and already it's starting to give me issues. I had a similar problem with my iPhone 4, when maybe after you released iOS5 the home button stopped working. I had to go to the store and they couldn't fix it so the solution was to mail me a new device and return the faulty one to Verizon. And when I got the new device, I had to go through the headache of resyncing all my contacts, music, apps, and some features weren't working either. Like for when I tried to sync playlists, I couldn't transfer all the music into the new device because of something to do with protected files purchased from iTunes. I had to do a bunch of research before I could figure out how to actually get my music to sync on the phone.
Now I feel like I'll be in a similar position where, if I go to the apple store, they won't be able to fix this problem and they'll make me mail my device to apple for an exchange for a new one and I'll have to go through the same process again.
If you guys want customer satisfaction, how about you deliver us with products that actually work as they're intended to instead of forcing us to have to do all this extra stuff? It's not like you're going to be willing to return the money I've spent on your faulty product if I've gotten fed up with it are you?

  • IPad 3rd generation iOS 6.1 unable to download.

I have not been able to upgrade my iPad to the iOS 6.1. It gives me a message that says "an error has occurred while trying to download"
I've tried turning my iPad off and on. I've also tried logging out & logging in to my iTunes & App Store.i am unable to plug it to my computer and do it thru there because I wasn't able to update my iTunes there either. - I'm not sure if not being able to update my iPad has to do with my apps not working properly, I am unable to open some and other shut down when I'm using them. I am about to throw my iPad against the wall. HELP!

Have you tried rebooting the iPad? It might help, with the apps that are shutting down on you even if it doesn't help with downloading the new iOS.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I brought a new ipad (3rd generation), the problem i am having is with itunes. i downloaded a television series onto my ipad, i did not know that it would try to download it all at one time. my question is how do i change the way my ipad loads.

As I stated in the title, I purchased an ipad (3rd generation), and I am having trouble with itunes downloads. Mistakenly when I purchased a television series I selected download the entire series to my ipad. Is there a way to stop this download and change the download location to either my laptop or into the cloud?

Did you try tapping on the download to bring up a pause status? You can finish the download on the computer in iTunes. You may be able to delete the download by swiping across the progress bar of the download after you finish the download on the computer.
Launch iTunes on your computer and go to Store>Check for available downloads. Finish the download in iTunes and then try to delete the download from the iPad.

  • Trouble with Home sharing on iPad, 3rd generation

I am trying to use Home Sharing to bring across my iTunes Music Library and Playlists to my iPad, third generation, IOS 6.1.3.  I have filled in the HOME SHARING APPLE ID and PassworD in Settings -> Music.  But according to two textbook references: 'My iPad', Gary Rosenzweig and iPad, the missing manual', J.D. Biersdorfer, both references state I should next click a 'More' button, which should provide me a listing of devices which I can select from to get a iTunes Library.  I do not have a 'more' button.  I have signed off and and re-logged back on and I still do not get a 'more' button.  Can anyone tell me if I have missed a step or was misinformed?

I have one network router.  I have 5 devices that connect to the router; a G3/G4 B/W PPC connected via an ethernet cable, IMac PPC connected via ethernet, MacBook 2,0 connected via ethernet, Apple TV connected via WiFi, and the iPad (3rd Generation) connected via WiFi. Home Sharing is turned on in the G3/G4 PPC, MacBook 2,0 and the iPad using the same Apple ID.  I was able to Home Share between the G3/G4 PPC and the MacBook, but not the PPC and the iPad.
I hope this helps you isolate my problem

  • Terrible noise recording with Apogee Mic in Garageband on iPhone 4S and iPad 3rd generation, both IOS 6

    Hey guys
I get a terrible noise on the audiotracks recording with Apogee Mic in Garageband on iPhone 4S and iPad 3rd generation, both have IOS 6 installed.
Apogee support have not been helpfull, neither Google, but maybe you guys have experienced the same problem?
I tried to test on an iPhone 4 with IOS 5 installed and it worked fine, clean recordings, no noise.
    Regards Rico

Strange nobody have experienced the same problem
Well, I think I fixed the noise issues myself.
Have you ever noticed the noise from your stereo speakers when you recieve a sms?
Well, the noise I experienced all the time was that kind of 'sms noise'.
What seems to eliminate the problem is this:
    In settings,
    - turn "Airplane mode" off
    - turn "Do not disturb" off (this is a new setting in IOS 6)
Maybe this can be helpful to somebody else

  • My wife's new iphone4 (a replacement for a 5 month-old iphone 4 with home button issues) is not recognized by itunes. Every other ios device in the house using that computer and Apple ID is. Any suggestions?

My wife's brand new iphone4 (which was a replacement for a 4month-old iphone4 with home button issues) is not recognized by itunes. Every other ios device on  the computer/Apple ID in question is recognized and syncs perfectly. Any suggestions?

If the new phone has already been setup, make sure the phone and iTunes are both set to the same account.
You might also have to authorize this computer for the new device under the store menu.

  • My Ipad (3rd generation) will not back up to iCloud

My iPad (3rd generation) has not backed up since Sept. 14. I have the latest iOS 8.1.3. It starts but ends abruptly. Any suggestions?

    Howdy gigi40,
If I understand you correctly you can tap the "Back Up Now" and it appears to start, but it then stops and nothing happens. I would start by quitting the Settings app on your phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can't restore iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular (VZ)

Model: iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular (VZ)
    Non Jail-broken.
I have tried to use iTunes to restore the iPad through restore mode and it gives me error 9 when using my Macbook Pro, and it gives me error 14 when using Windows 7 desktop.
I have good internet connection.  I have good USB cable (oem, plugged in directly into desktop tower/laptop).
I have also tried downloading previous firmware and using Shift click/option-command click on restore button via iTunes and choosing specific file to restore the iPad.
Anything else I can do to fix this iPad?
Doing research on error codes on Apple's website:
    error 9:  security error?
    error 14:  usb cable error?
I am not sure why these codes are coming up...
How can i get iTunes to complete the restore process.  I dont care about any of the data that was on the iPad.  All my photos are on cloud and backed up on Macbook Pro via iPhone.  It was all synced prior to this happening to the iPad...

    Hello TonyTechSupport,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot error 14 in iTunes.
    Check your USB connections
    Related errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4005, 4013, 4014, or “invalid response."
If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you may be unable to update or restore.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
    Try a different computer.
If necessary, resolve any further issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
If you're still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues by following the next section.
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • Headphones & iPad 3rd Generation

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/ipad_accessories/headphones
None of the headphones listed on the iPad accessory page listed above, show iPad 3rd generation compatibility. Do you think they are not compatible or that Apple has not updated the information page for these accessories?

  • IPad 3rd Generation frozen after reset was done. I get a logo but no status bar

iPad 3rd Generation frozen after reset was done. I get a logo but no status bar

    Hello there, darney87.
The following Knowledge base article offers up some great troubleshooting steps for the issue you're describing with your iOS device showing an Apple logo:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    Resolution
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected,  restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),  reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Mail Application in iPad 3rd generation is not refreshing

    Hi All,
I have iPad 3rd generation. Before iOS update 6.0 (long time back) , mail application was working fine.It got automatically updated when connected to a network without any glitch but after iOS updated to 6.0(now 6.1) , mail application taking too much time or sometime not working properly. I have to login to mail clients using safari... Any help?

    1. Double-click the Home button to see all Inactive Apps in Task Bar
    2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close App
    4. Tap center of screen to return to Home Screen
    5. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider

  • My iPad 3rd generation is loked!!!

An application (Titan Downloader) has locked my iPad 3rd generation and now I cannot do anything!!! I'm trying everything but it just don't work...I tried to shut down pressing the start/lock button, Quit the app pressing the HOME button and pressing both buttons at the same time, and nothing shows me a positive response...
I also have tried to connect it to my PC to restart the iOS to its original state, but the iPad cannot connect to the iTunes...
I don't know what else to do...
Please give me a hand here!!!

Are you sure you are doing the Reset properly? [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.]
Also, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • My Ipad 3rd generation is typing alone.

My Ipad 3rd generation is doing everything yourself.
He begins to open and switch applications alone.
When I type something, it starts to type the letters and numbers alone.
When this happens, the screen just hangs and only back to work if I leave the screen locked for a few minutes, but when destravo and I use it, it happens all over again.
Can anyone help me solve this problem.
I searched the internet and seen other people with the same problem but have not found the solution to this problem.
    Thank you
    Sincerely, Miriam

    1. Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
    2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.
    In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions
    Good luck
