IPhone 3GS (iOS 5) will not sync, stuck on *backing up* in iTunes 10.6.3.25

I recently updated iTunes to the latest update for Windows, since then, whenever I connect my phone and try to sync it just gets stuck in *backing up* for ages.. if I leave it it will be in backing up for hours.  I cannot sync my phone or add any content now.  I've been told to try and click the *X* in the progress window at the top of iTunes - but doing this does nothing but freeze iTunes for a few minutes - then it continues to *back up*... frustrating.  Can anyone help?
Ta very much,
Chrissi
Windows 7 Home Premium, iPhone 3GS (iOS 5.1.1) and iTunes 10.6.3.25
I am also having this problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4076906?tstart=0 Could they be related?

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if the problem has been resolved.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Some events on my iphone 4 (ios 5) will not sync with ical on my mac (using itunes/usb for sync)

If I add an event on the calendar on my mac - it does go to my iphone. If I change an event that HAD synced previously (not sure when this problem started, but i had never had a problem syncing before) that change goes thru. But I have several events on my iphone that just won't transfer to the Mac

My Iphone 4 crashed yesterday after a restart and upload of OS 5.0, it will only partially sync.  It's not transferring any of my music or ringtones.  They still appear when I click open the sync screens on ITunes, but I don't seem to have an Ipod function and only one of my personalized ringtones transfers on the actual phone.

I don't know about the systems, but is your phone on wireless and your other device on wireless?  Then I think they would mutually update.
Howerver the previous response from ckuan sounds much more informed so I would check that out.

    Hello MHGOH,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following troubleshooting assistant may lead you to a resolution of this issue. If you continue to receive an error message when connecting your iPhone, simply restarting both the phone and your computer may help:

Try going into your account details on iTunes, change your info there, then sync your devices.

  • My Ipod classic will not sync a tv show episode on Itunes

My Ipod classic will not sync a tv show episode on Itunes even though I already have another episode working on my ipod classic and it says it

How is your iPod configured to sync TV Shows?  What options do you have enabled from under your iPod's TV Shows configuration tab in iTunes?
No error messsages when you sync your Classic with iTunes?  Try resetting all warnings with the device by right->clicking on it from under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes and choosing Reset warnings. Then resync your device to see if any errors appears.

ipod will not sync after mcafee vulnerability scan installs itunes update?

When I tried the first time it asked me if i wanted it to stop syncing and to restore. It gave the choices of yes and cancel, i didn't click either because the option box went away and it just stopped restoring on its own. I did the store again and now it is asking if i want to set up as a new ipod or to restore to Andrea's ipod. Should I set up as new?

  • 3GS on iOS 6 will not sync most of music via cable

I upgraded my 3GS to iOS 6, and most of my music will not sync via cable.  I can check it all in iTunes, but the space allocation bar in iTunes does not change (on iOS5 I only had 1G free, now I have 8 G free), but only about 1/4 shows up on the phone.  I did  full restore--no change.  I checked  fill free space with songs--no change.  Help!  It might be that only music bought from iTunes is syncing and music I ripped myself or bought from Amazon is not syncing--i.e. my enire pre-iphone collection.

Ok solved my own problem--but this is squirrely.  In itunes, at the bottom of the "Summary" tab for your phone, is an "Options" section.  For some reason, having  "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked here only allowed 47 of 1900 songs to sync--even if they were checked on the music tab.  Unchecking this box and managing music from the music tab alone fixed the issue.

  • Updated my iphone 3gs, lost my music and apps, they are backed up on itunes, how do I move them back to my phone, tried to sync but not working, please help

Updated my iphone 3gs, lost my music and apps, they are backed up on my computer but i cannot move them over to my phone, tried to sync but not working, please help

well first make sure that when you click on the name of your iphone on the left hand side of itunes that you go to the app and music tab and check mark the sync apps and sync music. then try clicking apply in the bottom right hand corner. then if not try doing it again after going to prefrences in the top menu and going to devices tab and click reset sync history if that doesnt work with music try and drop and drag to the name of your iphone, lastly if that doesnt work you can try restoring from a backup from before you updated. it will keep the new software but put everything that was on your phone when you created the backup back onto your phone.

  • IWork iOS Documents will not sync.

If I create a Pages, Numbers, Keynote doc on my iPhone 4S it will not be synced to my iCloud account.
Documents that are already on my iCloud (created and synced from my iPad) will not sync back down to my iPhone.
    Photostream, however, does work.
    iCloud backup also works.
It's just the iWork documents that will not propagate to and from the iPhone.
    Everything is updated.
    All settings are turned on.
Everything thing is on the same iCloud account.
I have toggled everything on and off and reset.
I have erased iWork apps and reinstalled.
I have singed out of the iCloud account on everything and signed back in.
I have completely erased the phone and reinstalled everything from scratch.
And, I have spent two hours talking to four different "Geniuses" at the Smithhaven, NY Apple Store on 2/16/12.
They were friendly and dedicated but could offer no help and sent me home with with a shrug of their shoulders.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm, I suppose I should have posted here some time ago instead of just lurking waiting for the answer to show up so that I could follow the same procedure.  Then again, maybe I am doing that since the proper procedure was to publicly state that I have the problem so that Apple can fix it for me.
I'd still like to know the origin of the problem. I believe mine began when I lost cell phone coverage as I worked on a document.  I'm an ecologist working in Ecuador, and was in the field without reception for several days after that; when I returned to modern communications technology none of my new files would upload to iCloud nor have any new files created on my Mac downloaded to my iPad 2 since then.  When the problem began I was using iOS 5, but have since upgraded to iOS 6 and still have the same issue.  (I also foolishly did a backup and restore without reading the fine print about it not backing up iWork documents.  I lost a good bit of work and data there…)
    HELP!  Thank you.

  • IPod classic connects but is not detected in Diagnostic as "No iPod, iPhone, or iPad found" will not sync no matter what I try. have reinstalled itunes, changed cords, restarted services. Just started happening very recently. diagnostics detection is key.

I have a 120gb Classic that has been working, connecting and syncing flawlessly for years. Now it appears that (maybe since an itunes update) my same Windows 7 x64 computer that has not changed other than the occasional iTunes update will not detect my iPod, and therefore will not sync any more.
The odd thing is that iTunes will sometimes see the iPod (not always), and Windows will also sometime see the iPod. Even when it does, and I click to sync a podcast (or anything else) it appears to go through the #1 and #2 steps and says it is syncing - Do not unplug, then appears to finish, but when you check the ipod after ejecting, nothing has changed. It looks like this has been happening for about a week, but my wife must not have realized that songs and other items were not actually syncing.
I have tried uninstalling iTunes, downloading the 11.2... version available online now, no help. I have tried resetting the ipod, no help. I have tried changing cables, no help. every time I go through the diagnostics in iTunes, it fails the connectivity test and says "No iPod, IPhone, or iPad found.
I am so frustrated. I have tried everything I can think of but even though iTunes shows the iPod, it wont sync....

This issue has been resolved - my Support Advisor, Edgar, was able to discern what was causing the problem.
It appears that, despite years of never experiencing this, one of the latest ipod updates actually altered my device's personal settings and changed it to "Manual" for all synchronizing; even performcing Factory Restores did not change it back to being automatic.
My ipod is working as good as ever now thanks to Edgar. If anyone else is having this problem, please make sure you check your device's settings in iTunes and see if "Manual" is checked - even if you never changed the settings yourself and have no reason to suspect that to be the problem, as was the case here. If it is checked - uncheck it to enable automatic syncing.
So relieved this was not a much more serious problem. I've missed having my music on the go. Thanks, Edgar!

  • IPhone 4s w/ iOS8 will not sync apps.

I updated my iPhone 4s to iOS8 and now it will not sync apps.  The sync process freezes when it reaches the apps sync.  The apps on the phone are greyed-put.

  • Iphone will not sync any of my music from itunes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when i sync with itunes, the contacts etc sync, but no music. I have tried the restore option and it still will not sync my music. Please help, as this is a major problem.

Ok...I'm new with the iphone but I did notice one thing.
When your iphone is plugged in to your itunes, from the "music" tab...you have two options, 1. Sync all music and playlists. 2. Sync selected playlists.
I noticed that I couldn't select and drag entire cd's to my iphone, I had to create a playlist, drag the music there, then sync the selected playlist from the "music" tab of your iphone menu.
It worked for me...but I haven't read the manual or anything for the iphone. I'm sure there is an easier way to get whole cd's on iphone.
I'm not really sure what to do because I have much more than 7 gigs of music...and if selected sync all songs and playlists my iphone might explode.
Please let me know if there is an easier way than what I came up with.
