IPhone 4 ear speaker not working

Looking for more info regarding this problem..
Purchased iPhone 4 for my wife and I last month.
My iPhone ear-speaker went dead, but the external speaker, plug-in wired ear-phones work, and mic still work.
I went to take it in, and then the darn thing started working again. lol  Same thing happened early this week - not working, then it started working again.
Now my wife's iPhone 4 is starting to do the same thing. argh!
Not really sure if it's hardware or software.. but anyone else on this forum experiencing this same problem?

Yes. My Bluetooth on my iPhone 4 is enabled (to sync with my car).
But my wife's iPhone 4's Bluetooth is not.
I Googled this "ear-speaker problem" and found a few other reports, but no solutions (on Apple support forums).
Just wondering if the people of this forum encountered the same thing.. thanks for your fast reply !

  • IPhone 4 ear speaker not working after 2 restores and cleaning the headphone socket.

    Hi,
I know this problem is not uncommon, but here goes...
I have an iPhone 4 which was running iOS 5.1.1 a few days ago when the ear speaker stopped working.  I cant hear the other person when I make or recieve a call, but nothing else is wrong with the phone.  It is 18 months old.
I've searched the discussions and seen some of the suggestions.  I tried cleaning out the headphone socket, with no luck.  I then tried a full restore and update to iOS 6.  This appeared to have worked.  I tried 2 calls and I could hear the other person.  I then left the phone alone for a couple of hours and when I tried it again, it had stopped working again.
I have since done another full restore but the speaker is still not working at all.  The fact that it worked after the first restore suggests it's something simple or software related but I have no idea what else to try other than getting it repaired in a shop.  The problem is I am in Japan where my network (Softbank) and an independent repair shop have both quoted me the equivalent of $176 / £110 to fix it.
Does anyone know anything else I can try before I give in and end up shelling out this ridiculous cost for something that is probably a 20 minute fix?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I have the exact same problem with my ear speaker after my IOS 6 upgrade. My speakers work, bluetooth works, the earphones work, but the ear speaker doesn’t work. I noticed this IMMEDIATELY after the upgrade was completed. I also have the following problems:
-Very slow call connect time. 30 - 45 seconds just to connect is typical. Signal strength is 5 bars (ATT)
    -Problems attaching to known networks
-Very slow internet browsing with many timeouts on both the ATT 3G service and known Wi-Fi networks.
    - My camera was missing after the IOS 6 upgrade. I restored that from Restrictions inside of the Settings App
    - Music was so screwed up it was easier to just restore it
I went to the Apple store hoping to get some support. Between my wife, my son, and myself we have purchased 4 iPhones and an iPad over the last few years with plans to purchase another iPad in a month or so. So it’s not like I' not familiar with Apple Technology and their typical level of support.
The individual who waited on me was rude and condescending. He insisted that all of the problems were hardware related or ATT’s fault, or my fault. He further asserted that IOS 6 had NOTHING to do with any of the problems. I pointed out that it would be quite a coincidence for my hardware to break, for ATT to have network problems, and for me to suddenly forget how to use an iPhone at the same exact moment that IOS 6 had been installed. He maintained his position and offered to sell me another phone.
I don’t expect the folks in the store to reprogram the OS. Mistakes happen. I’m going to guess that Apple’s OS programmers are already working on a fix for many of the IOS 6 complaints that are easy to find on Google. Assigning blame to the customer and denying any responsibility is not a model for success or customer service. I’m sure Apple wouldn’t accept that kind of excuse from their component manufacturers and don’t think it is how they should deal with their customers. Further, Apple wants to own the device. They want to control the apps, the OS, battery, the delivery channel. I’m good with that so long as when there is a problem, they own that as well.
And BTW… I’m not including the maps in my list of issues with IOS 6 because I kind of like the new maps and am willing to give Apple the benefit of the doubt. I believe that their map service will get a lot better in a hurry.

  • HELP!  Ear speaker not working ONLY on calls

    Hey,
I just ran into this problem today and am really frustrated.  As of 3pm today my ear speaker stopped working but only when I make a call.  I can still hear my music and sounds and ringtones but when I connect to a call it doesn't work at all.
I have tried the windex/alcohol method, tried the plugging in and unplugging ear buds, tried the turning on and off the speaker phone and still nothing works.  I also tried a hard reset and still have the same problem.  The only thing I haven't tried is a full blown retsore and was hoping to get an answer here before trying to restore the device.  I have an iPhone 3Gs.  Anyone here have any tips or thoughts as to why this stops working on calls only and works fine on everything else?
I can hear the keypad when dialing but as soon as I hit "Call" the speaker just stops working.  HELP PLEASE!  Thanks.
    Seth

If doing the hard reset (holding power button and home button) doens't work, try restoring the phone as a new phone.
if that doesn't work - my guess is hardware failure. Call apple if under warranty or contact your carrier.

  • Why is my iPhone 4 speaker not working?

My iPhone 4 speaker has stopped working. It was working fine yesterday and now it's not, it still rings and plays alerts, but it won't play music, videos or podcasts. I've done a hard rest, played with all the iTunes settings and volume options. Suggestions?

Do you hear when a headset is plugged in?  If so, plug and unplug the headset several times to get the phone unstuck from headset mode.

  • Ear speaker not working while at home?

    Hello,
New to this forum, and could not find any call error specific section, so I hope I posted this  in the correct one.
I've had an odd problem lately which is that my ear speaker does at times not function, and this problem only occurs while Im at home. Whenever Im in another location, e.g outside or even while riding the train through areas with low connection it works, and the loud speaker always work. Has anyone encountered this problem and have a fix for it? I hate using the loud speaker, and I find this issue absurd. I have tried changing it to factory settings, force quitting phone app, reboot and safe mode reboot, all to no avail.
    Thanks in advance,
    Calle

Sounds like the only way to find an answer. I have literally not seen a single post on the net having the same issue as the one I have. It worked fine today and yesterday when I used the ear speaker, the day before that it didnt work, so I understand nothing. I have not made any changes between when it didnt work and when it worked. :/
    Well, thanks for your help.

  • HT1937 iphone 4s speaker not working

Hello everyone, I had bought a brand new unlocked iphone 4s at one Apple Store in Miami, Florida. I do not live in the US, so I traveled abroad to deliver the phone. This is a gift for my Dad. After seeting the device and start to use it we realized that the speaker is not working properly. I had reviewed in the web about this trouble and seems to be a common issue.
As you cpuld guess this is a shame to had make the effort to get this device (because it is not cheap) and have this trouble.
Did some one knows a solution for this trouble?
    I will appreciate your comments.
It is obvious that due to the fact I am out of the US I will not be able to apply for a replacement, at least now.
    Regards,
    Alberto

Well, why to buy in other country, for many reasons. In my case for a better price.
And how did that work out for you?
Now if you want a properly functioning phone, you'll have to bring the phone to the US (or mail it to someone you know there).  This phone will likely cost you MORE now, than had you just purchased it where you live.

  • Anyone else's iPhone 4s speaker not working after update to iOS 6.1?

My speaker does not work after updating the software to iOS 6.1. No sound for incoming calls or texts, no speakerphone, no siri, no music or any sounds played from apps. Headphones still work as does anything plugged into the headphone jack. I've check all my settings - everything is correct. I've rebooted and restored settings several times, I've docked it - nothing works.
Anyone else having this problem? Did anyone have this problem and were able to fix it? Does anyone know if Apple is aware and will be sending another update to fix it? I really don't think it's a hardware problem. Phone is in immaculate condition and never dropped or spilled on.

    As stated...

  • IPhone 5 speaker not working correctly

My iPhone 5 speaker works, and it doesn't if it gets turned up too loud, or my phone rings for a call, it's like it's too loud and the speaker stops working until I blow into the speaker. This doesn't always work either and requires acouple tries. Can someone please help? I don't want to send it in

There is a known problem with the original speaker module installed in the Iphone5.  If you experience crackling, static, or no sound at all from your phone and you've checked to make sure the volume is on, then it's likely an issue with the speaker module.  Apple will replace the phone or module for free for a year from the date of purchase but MAKE SURE YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT with the Genius bar, don't just show up, they only do repairs or exchanges if you have an appointment.  You can make one on line.  WARNING - if you purchased your Iphone5 from Verizon or another carrier and they are willing to exchange it make sure you don't get a refurbished phone because it's likely to have a defective original module in it too.  Make sure you get a NEW, recently manufactured Iphone5 with the new generation speaker module.  I went through three phones before I went to Apple instead of Verizon and got it replaced.  if they have a new speaker module in the Apple Store, they can just put a new module in your phone on the spot and you're good to go.  If they don't have one in stock, they just give you a new phone.

  • Receiver (ear speaker) not working on iPhone 5 after updating to iOS 7

Since upgrading to iOS 7 (or 7.0.2) the receiver on my iPhone seems to have stopped working.
I don't make / receive many voice calls - so not sure exactly when problem started.
Every call I have received in the last 2 days has been silent, where the person calling me can hear my voice, but I cannot hear them.
Also there is no sound when I make a call.
Prior to this most recent calls have been silent at first, with the sound only kicking in after 5-10 seconds.
I can turn speakerphone on - which works.
I have performed the folowing to try to fix the problem:
    1) Restarted phone
    2) Reset all settings
    3) Restored from backup
I've checked mute switch, tried volume buttons and ensured airplay is set to iPhone.
I managed to make the receiver work again by wiping all settings and content, then setting up as a new phone.
However I do not want to lose all the content, settings, app data saved on my phone, so this is not really an option.

Yes I have done this 4 times, I am sorry I should've been more clear in the information I provided but thanks for replying

    Hi All,
I had this Sound / Speaker issue too on my iPhone 4S, with only Ringtone & Headphones working and no other sound coming despite several software hacks and solutions read on forums here. I managed to solve it today after reading online for a perfect solution.
This seems to be a fairly frequent problem amongst users who are using 3rd party (Cheap Chinese) dock connectors or chargers. There is some residue on the charging connector and hence it seems to be stuck in Dock/Headphone mode. I personally had this issue that only Ringtone and Headphone were working. I cleared some stuck particles from the dock connector in iPhone below and voila ! Sound works perfectly. Try it using a cotton bud / swab with removed cotton or I did it with inverted metal paper clip carefully avoiding to scrap and destroy the PCB board. (Other common solution was to remove water particles from headphone hole but I didnt have any)
    All the best,
    Cheers !

  • I have Iphone 5 speaker not working

pls need help to solve my iphone 5 ring and speakers are not wroking

Check the mute switch on the side of the phone, does the icon shown on the display change between "sound" and "no sound" ?
Did you try to reset the phone by a holding the sleep and home button for about 10 sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting.

  • IPhone Ear Speaker Failure

After but one week, my iPhone ear speaker quit working.  People could hear me talk, but I couldn't hear them through the earpiece.  But if I switched to "speaker" mode, I could hear them. Weird.  Local dealer simply gave me a new iPhone.  But I'm wondering: Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm having the same problem. Did the recommendation of plugging in the earphones in/out about 8 times resolve the problem?
