IPhone 4 purchased in South Africa, being used in Toronto Canada?

Hey everybody,
I have an iPhone 4 that I bought in South Africa. It was an unlocked phone in South Africa and could be used with any carrier. I have moved to Toronto, Canada and the phone is locked here. I have contacted one of the network providers back home and they said it possibly could be that the frequency that Canada uses and the carriers use, are not supported with my South African iPhone 4. Is this correct or is there anything I could do (besides putting it on e bay or sending it back home) to use it here in Canada? I have been to numerous Apple stores here and in New York and they tell me the phone is locked and there is nothing they can do to assist. I don't want the phone to be used just for calling and texting, I want the phone to be able to function the way a normal iPhone should with all data and interent capabilities.
Please help.
I would highly appreciate some good advice.
Thank you.

All iphones sold in South Korea are locked to SHOW and SHOW does not offer official unlocking, so no, an iphone purchased in South Korea won't activate or work in the US.
Indeed, iphone sold in South Korea is locked to SHOW even when you purchase it, but they changed it, SHOW now offers official unlocking according to this: http://smartblog.show.co.kr/249
It is in Korean and I can read them and it clearly says, that they will unlock the iphone if and only if it's purchased in Korea, that it's active (in Korea they do allow temporary stop if you are on a vacation or what (but of course they can't unlock it if the line is inactive, you still keep the number and you just pay the minimal), where in U.S it's either use it or terminate it), you can still have them unlock for you even if you are still under contract. It can take up to 3 days. and you will receive an sms what to do.
This took effect on 9/10/10.

iPhone purchased in USA can be use in costa rica

If you purchased a legitimate unlocked iPhone directly from Apple, or an iPhone that was legitimately unlocked by AT&T, yes.
It will have no warranty outside the U.S.

  • Using iPhone 4S in South Africa

As I said in the title, I'll be going to South Africa for 3 weeks starting later this month, and need some advice on how I should use my Verizon iPhone 4S while over in the Dark Continent. I will also be in Zimbabwe for three days, if that makes any difference. I'm going to be primarily using the phone for e-mail, texting, and checking in on Foursquare. I've done a bit of searching, and it seems like I have two options -- either to suck it up and go with an international Verizon plan, or to get Verizon to unlock it and try to use a microSIM card. I'm a little iffy on trying the microSIM card, since I don't think I can buy one over here (US) that will provide a cheap plan in SA. Anyone on here have any experience with this? Advice?
    Thanks.

Call Verizon. Those guys work with this stuff all the time and would give you the correct information on how calling/data would be utilized

if it's not cdma then it should work as well as any phone bought in south africa
unless it's sim locked to a carrier in another country in which case you need to contact the carrier it's locked
to as to how or if they will unlock it

  • Can ATT unlock an iPhone 5 that is currently being used on Consumer Cellular?

    Hello,
I currently have an ATT iPhone 5 that is being used on Consumer Cellular. I want to unlock my iPhone so that I can use it on a different carrier. I was wondering if ATT can unlock my iPhone, since Consumer Cellular is a MVNO of ATT.

You would need to direct that question to AT&T.

How do I purchase / pay for a book purchased from iBooks if I live in South Africa?

Paid for ibooks are not currently available in the South African store, there are only free books. Do you have access to other ebook apps/stores e.g. Amazon/Kindle, Kobo, Nook ?

  • Trying to sell Verizon iPhone 4s to South Africa...

I'm trying to sell Verizon iPhone 4s to a friend in South Africa but i want to make sure that it would work for him. What would i need to do if it is possible?

It won't work unless you get Verizon to unlock the SIM slot first, and even if it works your friend could not get any sort of service, in or out of warranty, from Apple in SA. I would strongly suggest you sell the iPhone to someone in the US, and for your friend to buy an iPhone from one of the authorized resellers in SA.

  • Can a prepaid Mifi be used in Toronto, Canada??

    Hi,
I'm going to travel in NY, and I plan to go to Canada for one or two days.
Can the prepaid Mifi service be used in Toronto?? If not, is there something else Verizon can provide?

International data roaming isn't available on prepaid. If you got a post paid account, you'd be looking at $2.05/mb while roaming in Canada.

  • Hi, I am planning a trip to South Africa (I live in Canada) and would like to know if I'll be able to use my Ipad there and what do I need to do to be able to have wi-fi or 4g access?  Anybody can help me?

    Hi,
I am planning a trip to South Africa in Nov/Dec.  I live in Winnipeg Canada and own an Ipad wi-fi cellular.  I would like to know if it is easy once in South Africa to use my device the way it is (i.e. with its existing SIM card etc).  Or do I need to acquire a different SIM card?  Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?  Also if I need a different SIM card where does one go to get one in South Africa?   I have never travelled anywhere other than across Canada with my ipad (I am a fairly recent owner of such a device) and could use some help as to the best way to be able to use my machine in South Africa safely efficiently and at a reasonable cost.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you

Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?
Check with your carrier about roaming charges.  They are usually prohibitive.  Best to get a local SIM.

  • South Africa repairs and Service non Existenent

I got an iphone as a gift from my mother. i stay in south africa and my parents in China. The phone has been giving problems as it turns off all the time even with full battery. The only time it does not turn off is when it is plugged in to charge. I went to the istore in south africa (menlyn, pretoria) and they without even looking at the phone said they wont help me as the phone was not purchased in south africa. According to me apple is such a global brand that it should not matter where the phone was bought. Wo can i now contact regarding the phone?

now next question can aaple not repair it outside of the warrenty i.e i am willing to pay for repairs so there technitions can do it.
No. Apple does not repair iPhones, they replace them, and service centers cannot stock iPhones in all models for all the many different carriers in the different counties. That's why service is restricted to the country in which the iPhone is originally sold. If you can't send the iPhone back to China, you'll have to go the third-party route. Note that having your iPhone serviced by any authorized shop will void any further support from Apple, even if you were to send the iPhone back to China. Just FYI so you're aware.
