IPhone 4 update 7.1.1. "no sim"
I just updated my iPhone 4 to IOS 7.1.1. and now it says 'no sim'. I tried turning the phone off, toggle the plane mode, removing and cleaning the sim card, nothing helped .... Anyone???

If it now says "invalid" or "unsupported" SIM, your iPhone was almost certainly hacked to unlock it from the original cell carrier and updating has now removed that hack and the iPhone has relocked back to that original carrier. You will have to contact that carrier and ask if it would be possible to get your iPhone officially unlocked.

I just updated my 3GS from iOS 5.0.0 to 5.0.1
Since the update, Itunes says that no SIM card is detected, and the iPhone says that it cannot be activated. It also obviously does not detect any network.
I tried restarting the phone several times, removing the SIM card several times, but it did not change anything, the SIM is still not detected.You do not need to keep posting the same thing over and over again.

Your iPhone is in recovery mode. Do the following to get it out of recovery mode.
Plug your iPhone into your computer with iTunes open make sure iTunes recognizes the iPhone in recovery mode.
Hold down the power button and the home button to do a hard reset and shut it off
Keep your finger on the Home button ONLY and unplug the iPhone from the cable
Release the Home button and allow the iPhone to power back on which may take a few minutes
The iPhone will return to its prior format

This is so unfortunate. Holmdel, I would also report this to Apple to have it on record.
You can make Apple aware of this at: http://apple.com/feedback/iphone.html, and in the meantime you'll have to use AssistiveTouch. Hopefully when more people come forward, they will fix this bug in the next update. -
Download new iPhone update - CRASH
i just downloaded most recent iPhone update (for the old 2G phone). it downloaded everything correctly and then when phone reset it came back with an error that my SIM card is not in properly and wont activate my phone. Itunes wont recognize my phone so i can't restore.

Try removing and re-inserting your SIM. To do this, insert a paperclip into the small hole on the top of the iPhone, then push the tray back in. -
IPhone 3G no longer asks for SIM pin since 2.2
Since I updated to 2.2 my iPhone no longer asks for my SIM pin after a restart.
If I reset the pin it works as it should for a while but if I reset the iPhone the problem reoccurs.
I did a restore but the problem persists. Any ideas?I came on here because this morning I just noticed the same thing:

I have the SIM preference set to a custom password (not the default) which should be requested on restart/reboot.
If I normally shut down the iPhone 3G (by holding the lock button and swipe) and restart, I have to enter the SIM unlock code.
However if I force a reboot (reset) by holding the home and lock buttons, upon startup, either immediately, or later, then the SIM opens unlocked, and no code is requested.
I also have an iPhone 1G 8GB with iPhone OS 2.2 and this does not happen on that phone. The SIM passcode is always requested and needed regardless of restart/reboot/reset method.

I’m having the same issue.
My phone indeed has no SIM card. I kept the 3GS after upgrading to an iPhone 4 and I was simply using it as an iPod Touch.
As far as I had been told, I was perfectly OK to do that and it had been going fro update to update without any issue up to now.
The problem is that iOS 5 requires a new activation, and that this model cannot be activated with a valid SIM. Obivously, I’m not going to take a new line with AT&T ad pay $xxx every month just to be able to activate my previous phone.
I contacted AT&T but they had no clue how to get out of the problem and said it was in Apple’s hands anyway.
I tried restoring 4.3.5 on the phone, but so far I haven’t been successful :-\
I’m open to any suggestion

No. You can't activate any iPhone without a sim card installed. The sim card itself need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. Since you updated the software, the phone requires re-activation, thus you need a sim card. You can borrow one from someone, but bottom line, you need a sim card.

Today, after it happened twice in 12 hours, someone told me to reset - i thought they meant reset all settings, not network settings. while in the middle of resetting, there was an invalid SIM card again. so a few questions - which should i do first? try to manually back up from itunes (not connected to cloud - will be after tonight!), or eject SIM card? don't know if one will jeopardize the other. also, the last time i backed up was 6 days ago - have taken hundreds of pics since then - are those all lost? is there a way to essentially not reset? i thought the reset was okay because it said i'd lose no data or media. Help! thanks much!

Hi, i am going to buy and iPhone 5 in france but it says its an unlocked iphone so i guess if i take it to Ecuador (my country) the iPhone is gonna work with a sim card from Ecuador right¿
If the receipt says "unlocked" (and not "SIM free") then it will work anywhere in the world that there is a GSM network. However, if it ever needs repair you will have to take it back to France.

have a iphone 4. i have downloaded the latest version of itunes to update the ios. I am having problems with the back up and sync and also the update. the update error message is coming up saying it cannot connect to the iphone update server. I am useing a windows 7 32 bit laptop. I have also reset my phone to factory settings. Would taking it to one of the stores and they would do it for me??

I don't want to do a restore just now since the Touch seems to be working fine. Restore will have to wait until I have plenty of free time in case something goes wrong. -
What's up with the iPhone update server. I have repeatedly tried in recent days to update the IOS software on my wife's 3GS iPhone but keep getting message that the iPhone update server cannot be contacted. The phone syncs normally and I am sure I am connected to the internet properly. Also I have successfully updated ITunes software during this same time frame. What gives??

Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service. -
I am not able to access to iphone updates/store; it displays the message under diagnostics 'secure link to itunes store failed'.
I tried to turn firewall off, reinstall itunes and other troubleshoot options but none of them works......
Please help.Update: I tried the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" after everything else either fizzled out or hung up. After going all the way thru the recovery process (up to 100%), I finally got an error message.....it didn't work. And now, when I fire up the computer, I don't even get to that menu with the recovery options....the only thing I can boot into is the screens with the various ways to run your OS (in "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc).
I'm not a techie, but I'm guessing at this point, the part of my hard drive that got damaged in the fall was, at the very least, the partition with the recovery data. Couple that with the fact that this cheapo Toshiba laptop didn't even come with recovery disk (or ANY kind of disk, even basic installation software!), I'm screwed: I don't see any way to get a workable computer now without some kind of disk to boot from. So NOW my concern is more about spending the $$ for a new OS and THEN finding out the hard drive has other problems too...is broken in some other way to boot.
How to check this? As I said, I did run "chkdsk" back when I could get into the recovery menu and run the fix-it programs. It didn't note any problems. Thinking of taking this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista (which I never liked), but I have to know that the computer is otherwise ok....how to be sure?
