Iphone as a hard drive

can the iphone be used as a hard drive to store documents?

Not really, no. There are apps in the App Store that allow you to transfer files to and from the iPhone over Wi-Fi (and to view many of those file types right on the iPhone). But, files can only be moved via Wi-Fi.
A USB flash drive is probably a better bet. Most iPods have the ability to act as a USB flash drive (the 'Enable Disk Use' option) but the iPhone and iPod Touch do not have that capability.

  • Transferring music from iPhone back to hard drive

The external hard drive with all my music on it malfunctioned, so I had to delete everything. All the albums are still on my iPhone. I'm trying to work out how to transfer all the albums back from the iPhone to the hard drive. Does anyone know how to do it? It's driving me mad!!

Usually you are able to transfer your purchased songs from a device back to your computer. This is done by right clicking on the device in iTunes and selecting transfer purchases. To get other music files, you should use a third party program which will copy your songs over. Several are available, such as Pod to PC.

  • Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive.

Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive.  The movies were created with Flip Video, not iPhone.  I can see and watch them via iTunes but have not figured out how to move them from iPhone to hard drive. iPhone is broken (screen) and locked, but is still connecting to iTunes.  I have backed up all photos/videos created with the iPhone, just need to figure out how to get these last videos off the phone.  They are very important.  I am working off a Windows XP machine.  No, the camera wizard will not work for this as these videos are not stored in that area of the phone.
    Thanks,
    E

This is what I have done so far and stuck again.
I opened Image capture plugged in IPhone.  Device brought up camera roll pics only.
I was able to send them to the external hard drive.  Now they have green checks marks.  I cannot seem to remove them. Don't want to delete them yet to put into folder for having prints made..
Devices showed IPhone but would only show  camera roll I have two other folders and cannot seem to go to them to show up on the device  one is Photo library has 300+ pics and
last import folder.   I would like to take the 300 also from the Photo library and also copy them or move them to the external hard drive.
What step am i missing , please help.

  • Problems trying to store iTunes on external hard drive and back up iPhone to internal hard drive?

    Hi
I have been tirelessly trying to relocate my entire iTunes function to an external hard drive to free space on my laptop. I have migrated the iTunes library (from the 'My Music' location on laptop) to ext hard drive and also reinstalled iTunes, asking to save all files during set up to the ext drive (not in default 'Program Files' on laptop). I have also pointed iTunes to the library's new location on the ext hard drive. I did this after reading a recommendation on here that it is better to have both my library and all other iTunes files in the same place.
One of the problems is when I have moved the library, it has for some reason created two iTunes folders on the ext drive with different music in each, but the library database file is only available in one of them, and I am not sure if all the music from both folders is available in iTunes.
Another huge issue is that when I have tried to back up my iPhone to the computer (as recommended to do after migrating the iTunes program to another location), it is not letting the process complete; I get an error message saying it cannot save to the computer. It seems the location of the back ups (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup) isn't compatible with the new location of my library etc (on my ext drive)and from searching the internet for a solution, it seems you can't change the location of where back ups of an iPhone are stored.
So, does anyoine know if there is a fix-all solution to these dilemmas? Or should I just keep my library on one drive and the iTunes program on my int drive?
    Thanks in advance
    VR

    Hmm.
I'm sure I'd successfully tested the command line version of the move instructions at one point, but I'm getting the same "access denied" error when I try. Maybe "Move" doesn't like working with folders when the path contains sections with hidden or system flags. Anyway herewith version 3 which I've just tested works as described...
    Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Using Windows Explorer move the current Mobile Sync Backup folder from C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to your chosen location, e.g. as  X:\Backup where <User> is your Windows user name and X: is your preferred drive.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up, then type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "X:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "X:\Backup" accordingly.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library. iTunes will break the connection the first time it tries to write a file to the target folder.
What happens when you want to sync the device? If you're getting a warning about erasing and reloading the device with media from the current library then something is wrong. If you moved the library files correctly and then reconnected them to iTunes this should still be the "home" library of the device and it should sync as if nothing had changed. If not then revist the make a split library portable post for advice. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if for some reason you accidentally erased the original library files and all backups thereof.

  • How to Back Up iPhone to External Hard Drive via iTunes?

    Hi there,
I want to be able to backup my iPhone 4 to an external harddrive since I don’t have enough space on my MacBook Pro hard drive, how do I dothat? I have already moved all the iTunes libraries and media folder to that externaldrive and need to know how to default the IPhone4 backup to the external drive.I am using iTunes 10.

You can do the following to get the setup you need.
Copy the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ to  the external driveThe ~ means your home drive
Then rename the folder Backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ to say BackupOld
    mv ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/BackupOld
Create a new linked folder to the external drive (I assume the external drive is called ExtDrive
First create a folder called iTunesBackup on the external drive
    mkdir /Volumes/ExtDrive/iTunesBackup
Now create a link between where iTunes thinks the backups are and the external drive
    ln -s ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup /Volumes/ExtDrive/Backup
    Job done....

  • Transferring Purchased Music from iPhone to new hard drive

Hard-drive burned up and has been replaced. Most music was backed up, but not all. And most of the new music (that hasn't been backed-up) is on the iPhone. But I can't copy the files on my iPhone back to my new hard drive. Obviously there are security measures to keep folks from transferring files all over the place. But it seems that if it's on my iPhone, I must have obtained it legally, and there must be some accommodation for a dead hard drive.
Same question for my iPhone apps. I'd rather not pay for apps twice, and iTunes won't let me copy them from my iPhone back onto my 'puter. As soon as I sync apps, they'll all disappear, unless there's some way to convince the phone that it's looking at the old, pre-burned-up-hard-drive.
File>Transfer Purchases sort of worked, but not completely. I have about 600 songs on my iPhone, and it copied about 200 of them to my new hard drive. I have music purchased from iTunes, music copied from purchased CDs, and free downloads (Starbucks, Paste, etc). And there's no trend in what got copied and what didn't. Some of each category was copied, but not all. Very confusing that I can't find a pattern.
    OS X 10.5.8, iPhone 3G with 3.1.3

Apps issue solved. Or, more accurately, it's a non-issue. iTunes prompts you that you already bought the app and can download it for free. Not so with music, I'm afraid.

  • How is the best way to sync my iphone after a hard drive upgrade?

With a new hard drive on a Windows 7 machine and transferring my purchases (Mostly Apps, Music, and Photos) from my iphone to a fresh and the latest install of iTunes, how do i sync my apps the same way including the folders they are in on the iphone? Or do i have to drag them back inside their folders in the itunes software first? Especially, since it wants to delete everything from the phone and put the apps back on in that order instead of the folders I originally had them in...??

    Try this way:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your phone without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

  • Synching iPhone with external hard drive

I recently got a new MacBook Pro. For some time, I've been storing all my iTunes music on an external hard drive with no issues.
I was having trouble synching my iPhone with the new MacBook at first. It was telling me it would need to erase the current music from my phone. Finally I realized I needed to copy the iTunes folder from the user Library on my old Mac. Then I was able to synch my phone.
BUT then I realized that, rather than accessing the music on my external hard drive, iTunes had copied all my music to the new Mac's hard drive. So I looked it up and got it to recognize the external drive -- ended up having to copy all the music from the Mac BACK to the external drive, where it already existed.
But now the phone won't synch again! Those files are still in the Library folder. Why is the Mac treating my iPhone like a stranger again?

But, as I said, by copying those files from the /user/Library/iTunes folder, I had solved the problem temporarily on the new computer. Now that it's looking for the music on the external hard drive, something is messed up again.
And, by the way, the music is still all on the internal hard drive, too. But I did do the "consolidate library" and I've verified that iTunes is finding the music on the external hard drive, not the internal one.

  • IPhone synch after hard drive failure

I have an iMac 7.1 and after a total hard drive failure I had a new drive installed. Everything was wiped out, but at least I have the iTunes library still on my iPhone Here starts the problem.
After reading posts for the better half of a day I tried all suggested approaches, however the descriptions for doing it within iTunes don't seem to work (they insist on erase and synch the new (empty) library. I authorized the iTunes account on the iMac - still the same.
There are programs out there that rip the content from the iPhone, something I think is the wrong approach. Apple has to provide a way for its customers that have done nothing wrong to get their data back from a legal copy on the iPhone. This right way will likely exist, I just can't find it.
Anyone can point me in the right direction?

Hi, what no back up? -- well lets be honest everything should be covered by Apple & iTunes but!!
I use SENUTI @ odd times & it's an excellent App...why you are so against 3rd party app's I'm not sure..
If you have friend with a Mac & has some music you like you can always set up SHARING & dragNdrop..
With my first mac (ibookG4) I lost all my music etc.. a lesson learned, always back up otherwise it's a long arduous task burning your cd's one by one..If you purchased your music thro' iTunes you can contact them, at times have allowed me to Re download purchased items....L

  • How do I transfer music from iPhone to external hard drive

Got new macbook por with retina display.  Only has 256 GB of space.  My itunes library is close to 1 TB.  I have it on a hard drive but it wont work as an external device when I try to set it up under advanced preferences.  I also have a copy of my songs on an ipod - can I transfer this music to a new external hard drive to use as my itunes library source.  How do I do this?

I just solved the same problem, there were just too many songs in my iPhone, so i need to get them to my computer, and it's not a such easy thing! I've used several methods, but none of them worked! But finally i used a tool named iPubsoft iPad iPhone iPod to Mac Transfer which my friend suggested me use, it did me a big favor on helping me copy iPhone songs to PC! You can also sync your songs to iTunes if you want!
And what problem are you having doing that? What error is displayed? How are you trying to do it? I used iPubsoft iPad/iPhone/iPod to mac transfer app, it works really great!

  • Transfer photos videos from IPhone to external hard drive

I am growing  older rapidly from frustration.   I would like to transfer photos and videos from my IPhone to an external hard drive
that is plugged into my I Mac.   Photos are already in IPhoto but I want to directly transfer again to the external hard drive.
Then I will feel more secure in deleting photos and videos of great grandkids from my I Phone.   There is so much on there that
it will not allow me to take any more pics.   At age of two I do not want to miss anything new as she is learning.
I tried in past to sync and it transfered pics from my I Mac to phone so now I have couple of thousand pics on phone that do
    not need to be there.
Thank you for your support to whomever will answer for me.

  • Transfer photos from iphone to external hard drive

I have limited space on my MacBook hard drive. I do not use iPhoto, I use Aperture, and like I said I'm out of space. I want to transfer the photos and video directly from my iphone to my external hard drive. Either I'm blind or this is the most unintuitive thing Apple has done. Help please!

    UPDATE:
I have just realized that when you do this, on the bottom left of Image Capture you can scroll down and adjust the setting so that when plug you iphone into your computer that image capture automatically pops up and not iPhoto or make it so no import program pops up at all. At the very least I am glad to have the option to not have iPhoto automatically pop up because I don't like it.
Also- you can select the box below this to have photos automatically deleted from your phone after they import. I was doing it manually on my phone and obviously this takes a while.

  • Can i backup everything from my iPhone to External hard drive?

I have an Iphone 2g and i am just about to sell it too someone. But before i sell it, I would like to backup all the things from my iphone to an external hard drive i have.
Note:I already backed up my old iphone 2g to itunes but i would like another copy too and external hard drive just incase

No need to take the files from your iPhone just sync the iPhone again on last time then copy the backup file from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup to the external hard drive.  If you are using Lion the Library folder is hidden you will need to hold down the option key and the click the go menu item it will show in the drop down list.
