Iphone & data roaming in Spain

Hi, i've just set up a syncyourmail account and configured the web interface. However the person with the iphone is out in Spain currently, and is getting the error message “ it could not activate edge”
Is the handset not being given the correct network protocol from the spanish airtime provider or is it a simple setting on the handset?
The phone is on contract with roaming enabled.
TIA

" if I simply buy a simcard and put it in will this work?"
If it is unlocked, then yes.  If not, then no.
Did you buy it as locked or unlocked?
Ask your carrier if it is locked and if they offer unlocking.

  • Iphone data roaming - option not working ( urgent please help)

I am going on a long holiday (3months) to various countries from Canada and I will be using my phone only for the first leg of the journey for 15 days just to keep in touch with my family to say I'm safe and all. I dont want to unlock or jailbreak my phone.
Is there a way to disable the 3G to avoid roaming charges ( Since I am on a contract I cant ask my provider to block it) I turn on the data roaming option but the 3G sign is still shown and its still connecting to the network
    Is there any other way

"I turn on the data roaming option but the 3G sign is still shown and its still connecting to the network"
Are you out of the country when you do this? It won't disable data when you are in your home network.
    From the manual:
"Data Roaming turns on Internet and visual voicemail access over a cellular data
network when you’re in an area not covered by your carrier’s network. For example,
when you’re traveling, you can turn off Data Roaming to avoid potential roaming
charges. By default, Data Roaming is turned off. "
BTW, I'm not sure how helping you avoid a roaming bill is urgent. Some have much more "urgent" problems, like crashes, unresponsive iphones, etc.

  • Info re: iPhone data roaming Europe??

Hope this is right forum for this question.
Getting an iPhone (US) and wondering what roaming charges are for data usage (Safari/internet) in France.
Also, it it is unreasonably high, can you use iPhone as phone only?
Would be nice to have internet access there, but can't find rates on ATT site.
    Thanks for any info.

    http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/popups/international-iphone-tips.jsp
There's a link to data packages from that page.
If you set Data Roaming to OFF (Settings > General > Network), you can still make voice calls and use Wi-Fi. If you activate Airplane Mode you can still turn on Wi-Fi - that's the only way to have NO charges when roaming internationally.
Note also that you'll need to call AT&T to have them activate international roaming in the first place. It's off for new accounts by default, and unless they turn it on you cannot even connect to a non-AT&T carrier network.

  • BT Fon wifi and iphone data roaming

    Hi
I am travelling to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore for three weeks from December 30th this year.
I was hoping to take advantage of FON wifi hotspots in each of these cities- of which there are many! In order mainly to avoid the notorious "bill shock"- so to use my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 apps only when within these hotspots and only with the wifi part of the devices (3g turned off).
However a colleague of mine reckons that I will still be charged for wifi use of FON hotspots if I am updating iAPPS etc.
I was under the impression that *ALL* FON usage was free to BT Broadband customers just like access to BT openzones in the UK is.
Can anyone clear this up for me please? If I do have to pay for FON usage on these devices in the se cities where can I fins a price list?
    thanks
    Rob

    Hi rjs200, and welcome.
Wi Fi via Fon is free for BTBB customers. There will be 'open' wi fi in cafe's, bars and hotels etc..........
What you need to watch out for to avoid the killer bill is that you dont connect to data use.  Disable the data connection for all functionality on your phone before you leave the UK, and you wont geta nasty shock when you return home.
There are apps. which you can install, such as "wi fi analyzer" which can alert you to available wi fi connections.
There is also the possibility of using VOIP for phone calls back to the UK, on Android it is the Sipdroid app., there will doubtless be an i phone equivalent for you to use. VOIP uses your BTBB huphone number.
Check out the Fon website for locations and partners abroad etc.

  • AT&T service iPhone International Data Roaming - excessive fees

    For info:
I mailed below message to AT&T Customer care: [email protected]
Am sure for many international travelers this will be a nice customer service improvement.
Send them a mail as well. It may help all of us traveling overseas.
"I do have following concerns on AT&T's iPhone International Data roaming service.
I voiced them as well to your service center reps.
The feature is a nice useful service.
But I encountered a number of flaws:
    - Long time for service calls.
    - Misrepresentation of costs (overcharge of 150%), and
    - Resulting in excessive costs.
I am fully aware of all stories on international calls/data roaming with iPhone (ref suggestions on AT&T FAQ)
No need to fill me in on that.
    Here is what happened:
    - before a month of overseas travel (mid Dec - mid Jan), I had the service activated:
it took me 1/2 hr waiting at the phone before I got to speak a AT&T service rep.
    - I was told the service will be charged pro rata (ie days of usage) and for a month travel that would be 25 USD.
and I had to call back upon return to disactivate/cancel service.
    - Upon return I called back AT&T service center , again a long on hold waiting time,
and I was told I needed to wait for my next invoice statement to see the my completed overseas period on the bill, and could only cancel the service then.
    - This week I received this next statement, called back AT&T service center , again a long on hold waiting time,
and now I was told the service would be cancelled only as from this very day, and no retroactive cancellation.
I was told the reason is to allow bills from overseas carriers to be taken into account for the invoicing and the international feature.
In other words, if I had cancelled immediately upon return, overseas charges booked into my bill after my cancellation call (but incurred before) would be hitting me at full charge.
Thanks for doing so, but all this results in a 2.5 months service period for this feature, while I had only wished a 1 month service period and was told I would incur only a 1 month service charge !
    A number of suggestions,
    - make the feature true pro rata charges, now it is a misrepresentation and an excessive overcharge.
    - AT&T has a nice individual account profile online, why can one not activate/disactivate the service there ? Will be much faster.
    - or have the service activated with a separate credit card purchase/billing ?
Hey, and advertise it on iPhone/Apple.
Loads of people who are traveling overseas will be interested ! "
    Cheers
    Tom

    DexGtr,
If you go to Settings -> Network, there is an option to turn off data roaming.
However, if she hasn't updated her firmware since she purchased it that option may not be available.
iPhone Firmware updates are downloaded via iTunes. Connected the iPhone to iTunes, and if it doesn't prompt you to update, then click on "Check for Updates" in the iPhone Summary tab.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Data roaming setting does not show up on iPhone 4S

My wife got a new iPhone 4S from Verizon a few weeks and and she's been using it with no probolems since then. Yesterday we crossed the board into Canada and I tried to turn "Data Roaming" off on her phone but the "Data Roaming" setting does not exist in Settings->General->Network. On my Verizon iPhoen 4S it has the optios "Voice Roaming" and  "Data Roaming" but on hers only "Voice Roaming".
I was able to turn off all cellular data but that's actually inconvenient because we're right on the border and often go in an out of US cell converage areas, so with data roaming off it lets me use data whenever there's a US cell signal and otherwise prevents me from using data on a Canadian signal, but with all cellular data off, you have to constantly be toggling the setting when you think you go from a cell tower in the Canada to one in the US.
Does anybody have any idea why the "Data Roaming" setting does not exist on her phone yet it does on mine? Both phones are running iOS 5.0.1.

On your wife's phone: Dial *228. When prompted, select 2 to update her roaming capabilities. When complete, you will hear a confirmation message. In about a minute, you will also see an alert that your service update is complete. See if doing that fixes things.

  • HT1807 I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?

I am traveling in Mexico.  I have an iPhone 3s.  How do I turn OFF data roaming?  Under SETTINGS I don't see Network. I don'r see it under SETTINGS/General either.

What you should do, if you don't want any nasty surprises, is put your phone in Airplane mode. That turns off all iPhone radios, but you can go back into settings & turn WiFi back on.
Do not rely on the data roaming setting to protect you.

What is data roaming? Does it cost extra?
Why doesn't my iPhone automatically connect to AT&T service? Sometimes I have to go directly to Carriers in the Settings to connect to AT&T 3G. Thank you in advance.

There is no local data roaming or call roaming in the U.S. as a subscriber with AT&T. Wherever AT&T has coverage in the U.S. is included.
AT&T does not own all the towers in the areas where they have coverage in the U.S. AT&T calls this "off net usage"
The following was copied from AT&T's wireless service agreement.
+If your minutes of use (including unlimited services) on other carrier networks ("off-net usage") during any two consecutive months exceed your off-net usage allowance, AT&T may, at its option terminate your service, deny your continued use of other carriers' coverage or change your plan to one imposing usage charges for off-net usage. Your off-net usage allowance is equal to the lesser of 750 minutes or 40% of the Anytime Minutes included with your plan. AT&T will provide notice that it intends to take any of the above actions, and you may terminate the agreement.+

  • IPhone, VPN and 'data roaming'  (UK)

I had great difficulty setting up a VPN link to my university server. Even with identical settings to those on my laptop(s) the iPhone persistently produced the immediate message 'the server does not exist' (Oh! yes it does!). This applied on the EDGE, and more than one WiFi network. (And of course I checked the name very carefully!)
Anyone else with similar problems might like to know that I have solved this, for reasons I am unclear about, by:-
1 - substituting the (hopefully static) numeric IP address for the VPN server name
2 - turning 'on' Data Roaming (default being off)
Neither of these two measures works on their own but the combination works fine. Whilst the first might be easily explained by some DNS issue I do not see why the second measure is necessary, and there are dark warnings about charges in the handbook. What is 'data roaming' and why should it make a difference even when logged into the phone's home network?
    Comments appreciated!

When you are outside the normal O2-UK coverage zone (i.e., in another country), then the phone is "Roaming". The Data Roaming switch can be used to control whether the iPhone tried to make a GPRS/EDGE data connection when the phone is roaming. I.e., when your phone is connected to a non-02 network.
If you are in the UK and connected to 02 while trying to connect to your VPN server, then you should not need to turn Data Roaming on. However, if you are trying to connect to your VPN server whilst outside the UK, then I would expect you to need to turn on Data Roaming (unless you are using WiFi)
    Hope that clear things up.

  • Is it possible to use 2.4GB of data roaming in 1 hour on a iPhone

Can anyone help me please. I have a iPhone 4 and turned off data roaming, emails 3G etc when I went to turkey and only used the phone to make a few texts and calls but received a £742 bill on my return to the uk for 2.4GB of data roaming in 1 hour 3 minutes. I have done a bit of research on how much data this actually is a I do not believe it is even possible to use this amount in such a short time.  Can anyone advise me as vodafone are just not listening and say I must have used it. The data roaming is claimed to be at 0400-0500 hours when o was asleep and my phone was turned off!

Data use is not reported in real time in many cases. If the system you were on was like many, it reports data useage in batches, at a specific time each day. If the useage appears on your bill as occuring between 0400 and 0500 that is the time it was reported, not the time it was actually used. It could have actually been spread out across dozens or hundreds of individual transactions across the course of a day, or in rare cases, more.

  • IPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 - Data Roaming Off/On control missing

My iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 does not have the Data Roaming Off/On control under Settings>General>Network. Where did this critical control go? It is still referenced in the iPhone user Manual for iOS 5. Note that this is very different from the Cellular Data Off/On control. The Data Roaming control should be default Off to prevent using very expensive data when roaming outside the USA.

Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears)

Face time with wifi only.  I have a 4Gs iPhone traveling to Japan.  Can I use face time with another 4Gs or IMacback in the States using just wifi and with I have my Celluar Data and Data Roaming off?

Thanks,  After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done),  I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time.  It worked!  Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.

  • Erroneous data roaming on iPhone 6

I've had a couple of instances where small amounts of roaming data usage on non consecutive days are reported by my carrier (Rogers) after travelling abroad in Europe. The phone is an iPhone 6 running IOS 8.2 ((12D508) and both Data Roaming and Cellular Data were turned off. The phone also says in Settings that "0" bytes were used while roaming. The data usage is very small.  29 kb on one day and 285 kb on another.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be going on. The carrier has kindly reversed the charges incurred but is unable to explain other than suggest I might have turned roaming on briefly which I know I didn't.

    Queen_TheHeard,
    You asked:
"Are there settings on the iphone 6 that could assist with data consumption?"
If you go to Settings...Cellular, and scroll down the page, you will see a list of all your apps. The ones that have used cell data indicate how much they have used (74.2 KB, 1.5 MB, etc). You can turn off cell data for any apps you want to use only with wifi.
System Services, near the bottom of the list, will tell you what iphone processes (other than apps) used data.
At the bottom of the screen is a Reset Statistics option. You can reset this at any time to track data usage from that point on.
You may also want to log into your Verizon account online and see list of when and how much data was used. This might tell you how/when your high amounts of data were used.
    Hope this helps!

  • I am travelling overseas and want to transfer photos from my iPhone to the iPad using iCloud. will this incur data roaming costs?

i am travelling overseas and want to transfer photos from my iPhone to the iPad using iCloud. will this incur data roaming costs?

Yes, unless you are connected to free Wi-Fi.

  • With two iPhones 4, turning on Facetime on both iPhones, turning on Data Roaming, Enable 3G, cellular data.  Wifi has been enabled on, Wi-Fi is on, 'ask to join networks' is on.  I cannot get the two iPhones 4 to do 'FaceTime' with each other.  Changes?

May 16, 2011:  The two iPhone 4 phones, being next to each other, cannot do FaceTime.  with Data Roaming = On, Wi-Fi = On, 'Ask to join Networks' = On, Enable 3G = On, Cellular Data = On,
Why is Facetime on one iPhone 4 not connecting to ther other iPhone 4 when both have the 'FaceTime' icon showing on both?

I will through that note and have applied the items in that note on both iPhones.  Both iPhones are in the same physical location.  Both appear to be connected to a wi-fi network.  Still no FaceTime connection.  Is it such that both iPhones must be connected to a Wi-Fi and that wifi must be a network without a password needed to join it?  I thought 'Data Roaming = On' was such that iPhone 4 would then find a wifi network without a password needed and one could use FaceTime.
Is that the incorrect assumption?   If yes or no, what specific items are needed to be checked before I do this again or be checked while attempting FaceTime.
