IPhone Will No Longer Sync. HELP

I connected my iPhone to charge last night and grabbed it this morning to go to work. At work I noticed that there were no songs or podcasts on the phone anymore... hmmm strange.
When I got home I tried to sync the phone again and got the following message:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone "Steve's Phone"
Goto the Summary Tab in iPhone preferences and click restore to restore the iPhone to factory settings.
Ok, so this worried me a bit but i thought... what the heck, I can reimport my contacts, etc.. will suck to lose all of my SMS messages but ok, we'll try it
Went ti iTunes, Clicked on the iPhone Prefes and clicked Restore. The I get the following message:
The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-18)
I tried to reinstall iTunes (no help)
Changed to a different USB Port
uninstalled everything and re-installed again in new usb port
searched and searched google for solutions, all of which involved some combination of the above.. but to no avail..
Ideas ??

Good Job restoring on another Computer. Did anything Sync over from this computer?
If your running Windows XP or Vista and things will not Sync over anymore, You got a couple options. Restoring was a good troubleshooting step.
Go to Edit-Preferences-iPhone- Reset Sync History, Confirm it, Then try and Resync
Go to Info- Scroll down to Advanced, Put a check mark in all boxes you want. And attempt to Sync.
Seems like you already went to the Apple Retail Store. Best of luck on this endeavor.

IPhone will no longer sync to iTunes

I downloaded the latest itunes software last night in order to download the new iPhone software but since updating my iTunes my phone will no longer sync. It appears in the devices category but whenever I go to click on my phone, iTunes freezes and I have to force quit iTunes and try again. I have restarted both my phone and computer and I am yet to have any luck. Is thee anything else i can try? I have messed with it for several hours two nights in a row and I'm just about through trying

Iphone will no longer sync to my power mac

The latest version of iTunes will not install on my mac since I have a PowerPC G5 and OSX 10.5.8. But now my iPhone 4 (and I have already ordered an iPhone 5) will no longer sync!
How can I now sync / put music on and off of my iPhone?

Buy a new, refurbished, or secondhand Intel Mac. While iTunes 10.6.3 can sync the iPhone 4 from a PowerPC Mac, the iPhone 5 absolutely requires Mac OS X 10.6.8, which requires an Intel Mac.

My iPhone will not longer sync my calendars

My iPhone4 will no longer sync my calendars with my iMac.

My problem comes and goes. Everything syncs perfectly across platforms then suddenly one "calendar" in the cloud disappears from my iphone. I haven't changed any settings, so it has to be a bug in the software or a glitch in the cloud.
This morning I see that a scheduled appointment randomly disappeared from my phone. This is a BIG problem for business users.

Help! iPhone will no longer sync my playlists from iTunes

My iTunes playlists synced to my iPhone with no problems. Today I decided to change some playlists. When I went to sync them to my iPhone, all my music disappeared and none will sync. It appears that when it gets to the music sync, it just stops. With no errors of any kind.
My contacts and videos sync with no problems.
Please help!

My ipod shuffle synced, phone wont.

It's ridiculous how difficult this is. I've reinstalled iTunes, played with the settings, and it just doesn't work.
It will happily sync my computer library (which has nothing in it) with my phone library (589 songs) thereby (presumably) wiping out the 589 songs.
But I can't get it to sync the other way and copy the iPhone library to the computer.
It also puts new CDs on the computer but not on the phone, where I want them.
Is there anyone at Apple that cares about this abject stupidity in the software?

Help! iPhone will no longer sync with my iTunes library

My iPhone thinks my iTunes library is not the one it is used to syncing to anymore for some reason, and whenever I try to sync music or applications, I get: "Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with another iTunes library?" I don't want to erase everything on my phone, since there is a lot of data there.
This seems to have happened because of the following sequence of events:
1) My external hard drive was disconnected
2) iTunes couldn't find my music, even after I reconnected said hard drive
3) I followed this instruction to recreate my iTunes library:

4) This partially worked but it couldn't find all my music
5) I added my Music folder and reimported
Now the applications section is blank (no applications) and I can't seem to sync my music without in threatening to erase everything. Is there some recourse for this without erasing everything?

The issue was, for future readers of this post that I had moved my database file as well as the XML file. The database file must contain all the applications as well as the information as to whose iphone it is, so I put that back, and everything seems to be working now as planned. Thought I would put this out there for people with this issue in the future.

This is my first time using this forum, and I apologize if my post isn't "normal" or if my question is too long. My old acer computer had become corrupted and I had to reinstall my copy of windows. When I tried to sync a new ringtone to my iphone, which was only ever synced to this same computer, I was prompted to delete everything I had so I could install one ringtone. That does not sound ideal, and I refuse to delete everything I've put on my phone and my data to sync to itunes. There has to be another way to show my phone that this is the same computer. So I do not have to go through the hassle of doing everything again. I could not find an answer in the forums, and hope you can help me. This is pretty close to being a deal breaker for me. I'm beyond frustrated with this policy.
I don't believe it matters, but I'm running the latest version of itunes, as of today, and I have an iPhone 4 CDMA iOS 7.4.

I have a few games with quite a few hours invested, and I worry that I'll lose the progress I have as they do not save to the cloud. I may have to bite the bullet, and just take the plunge to resolve this. I just want a way to easily transfer my "Home Computer" for my iPhone. My laptop is years old and in need of being replaced, and it's about time to upgrade my phone. These life events piling up are making me consider switching to a friendlier OS. I'm not using this as a threat. I just hope some apple high up will read this, and realize that we need alternatives. Life happens.
Thank you both Paul and Lawrence. I clicked "This helped me" not knowing it would remove the option to choose "This fixed my problem" too. For anyone else reading this thread. Using the guide provided has done both. It has helped me and given me a fix to my current problem. Lawrence has also provided me with the last bit of information I feel is missing from wjosten's guide. That syncing will completely erase all of your data and reinstall it in one fell swoop. It's a great fix. Even if it isn't the exact one I wanted. Thank you again!
