IPhoto 08 gives spinning ball for 2 minutes at launch.

iPhoto '08 is having trouble starting up on my iMac.
When I click the iPhoto icon in my dock, it bounces once and opens the program. All my photos appear. But before I can do anything, the beachball starts spinning. iPhoto locks up and the ball spins for about 2 minutes. Then the ball goes away, and everything's fine. iPhoto is nice and zippy after that.
FYI, I have 2 GB of RAM, and about 7200 photographs. And this behavior is recent -- it didn't do this, say, a week ago.
I've deleted the iPhoto cache folder in my User Library. No luck. I rebuilt the library, holding down command-option, and selected every checkbox to rebuild. Still the same.
What gives? Surely it's not suddenly choking on the number of photos.

Aha! Deleting my iPhoto preferences fixed it right up!
As I was going through and putting my prefs back the way they used to be, I clicked the "Share my Photos" button in the Prefs dialog. The ball started spinning right away.
So.... clearly sharing all 7200 photos was causing the problem. I actually use sharing so rarely that it's no problem to turn it off.
Yay.
(And BTW, I don't have any web galleries, but that's turned out not to be an issue.)

It is dangerous to touch the newsletters from a cinema: it blocks every action for several minutes.

The answer is obviously to find in the overhead of the body: 22:1 chars by a short, soft Tidy-up with BBedit-builtin.... The difference in timeconsumption is to see in Safari, in Mail it takes minutes to show anything of this mails.
Perhaps I came back, if this is not the whole true....

  • IPhoto 08 Spinning Ball When Photo Sharing

Since updating to iPhoto 08 every time I attempt to share my picture library iPhoto freezes and I get a spinning ball. After a number of minutes the ball stops to spin and iPhoto returns to its normal functionality. But, after initializing photo sharing every time I start iPhoto I experience the same problem where iPhoto is unresponsive with the spinning ball for a number of minutes and it returns to its normal functionality. I have read in the posts +*"Topic : iPhoto 08 gives spinning ball for 2 minutes at launch"*+ to delete the iphoto preference file. So I tried this and it fixed my problem of iPhoto freezing on start up but when I try to turn on picture sharing again the problem comes back. The person in this post thought that the freezing was related to the large size of their iPhoto library but I have two libraries one greater then 30 gigs and one smaller then 3 gigs and I have the same problems with both. If someone could help me or give me insight into how I can solve this problem it would be appreciated.

This is definitely an iPhoto issue not a library issue. It took your advise but instead of rebuilding the xml file the library which sits on my internal drive I thought I would start fresh and make a new library and see if the problems persisted in this new library. So I created a new library and before even adding any pictures tried to share the library and the same problems that I had been experiencing happened again. This would lead me to believe that the problem isn't associated with the iPhoto library or any file in its contents but with the iPhoto program itself. But if this is the case I am at a loss because I have already once reinstalled and updated iPhoto to see if that would correct the problem and it didn't.
    Thanks
    Eric

  • Photoshop CC gives beach ball for a full minute during startup.

CC 2014 works fine on my iMac. However when trying to start key CC 2014 apps on my Macbook Pro Retina (current version of Mavericks), they hang during startup.
I uninstalled, ran CC cleaner tool, reinstalled, tried removing plugins, font files... I logged out of Creative Cloud and back in... I'm at wit's end, and have wasted way too much time trying to troubleshoot. Illustrator, InDesign load fine. Photoshop and Premiere Pro do not. Photoshop will eventually load, but after the interface shows up it will give me a beach ball for at least a minute or more.
I logged in as a Guest user and it started right up.
Has anyone else experienced this? Just wasted a night trying to get this too work.

I have the exact same issue... but haven't found a solution for it yet :-(

  • Lion, Spinning Ball for a few seconds at a time

Macbook Pro, Lion, 8Gig. I have frequent encounters with the spinning ball. Everything stops, the ball comes on, stays for several seconds, then back to life. During the episodes Safari, for example, is completely unresponsive. During the episodes, I can click on another application and switch to it.
This mac has been through several generations of OS X, and several different physical machines, using Migration Assistant at each shift.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Hey Sally,
We have an article that outlines a few troubleshooting steps if your Mac is running a bit slowly.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3915
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
    Hope this helps,
    David

  • Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion frequently hangs with spinning ball for 1 min while a page is loading, or while opening a new tab. No tabs useable

Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion. Frequently hangs for minutes with spinning ball, usually while a page is loading (status bar says "loading..." "waiting..."), but sometimes just while on the same page. Other tabs and windows are not useable, even though only one tab is waiting. I usually have 2-4 windows open with several tabs each. Behavior is no different in safe mode. This is making the browser unusable.
In the past this happened and I've reinstalled or created a new clean profile, but it always recurs.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • Iphoto 11 spinning balls when viewing photos

Hi - We're pretty frustrated so seeking help here as iPhoto support via Apple Care has not offered a solution to our issue. We have late 2012 iMac 8mb RAM with 3.2 (or 3.4) processor.
    We have 3 Nikon cameras; D80, D300S, D800.
    The D800 is the newest.
Uploading from cameras into iPhoto works perfectly.
However, when viewing a particular Album that contains photos from all 3 cameras, we get spinning ball and have to wait for up to 30 seconds to go from one photo to another
The spinning ball is random BUT doesn't happen on D80 or D300S photos. Only happens on D800 photos, which makes us wonder if there is a bug in iPhoto. The D800 is supported in iPhoto.
More info: The size of the photo doesn't seem to matter, as this can happen when one is going from a large MB photo to a small one, and visa versa. It doesn't hang on particular photos, but seems to be random.
The D800 is a 35 megapixel camera if that info helps at all. The other cameras are much lower megapixels.
I don't know enough about computers to solve this myself, but iphoto support has not found the problem. I think it's a lot simplier than we think but don't know what to do next.
Apple Care iPhone support had us repair the library and even make a new iPhoto library but we got the same issue.
The album with the issue contains 173 photos, so of which are HDR. It is not getting stuck on HDR photos, but sometimes it can. Like I said, it's random.
When we put that same album into Elements12, there was no issue of spinning balls, so I also wonder if it's the size of the entire library that has something to do with this issue. (the iPhono Library contains 5,000 photos. Support confirmed that there is plenty of free memory so that is not the issue either, but we are going to have the 8mb upgraded to 16MB anyway but we don't believe this will solve anything at this point.
We really wanted to buy Aperture but wonder if we need to resolve this issue in iPhoto first....Thank you  & I hope I provided enough info. I tried...-Lynn

Yes, occurs in both RAW & JPEG
Here's what we learned today: when we call up the Album in question (but does happen in other albums but trying to stick with just one for now) it is now confirmed that it's only happening with D800 photos, but doesn't matter the size of photo or whether Jpeg or Raw. Can be either/or.
BUT, once we go thru the entire album of 174 photos, the time lag is gone the second time we view the photos. (no spinning balls & can scroll rapidly thru entire album) Wouldn't this suggest not a camera issue?
If we close out of iPhoto and go back into iPhoto and to that same album, we get the spinning ball delay between some of the D800 photos as before, but also confirm that it doesn't hang up on same photos each time but hangs only on D800 photos.
One more thing that may mean nothing - The abum has 174 photos. The first 100 or so photos were shot with the D80, the next group are D300s, and the last bunch (from photo #145 to 174) are D800, so the hanging doesn't begin until #145, but might not hang until photo 150. It's random, and different each time the album is opened AFTER iPhoto is closed & re-opened. As long as the album remains opened we can even go to other albums & go back to that album & all is still fine. It's just the intial opening of iPhoto each time.
This particular album IS a "rated" album so it has that cog wheel on the album file. Because it contains all photos that my husband rated as "3-star photos", I thought maybe the "smartness" could be the issue, but he has other albums with D800 photos that aren't rated & those photos can also hang...
Hubby has gone out to shoot post-blizzard photos & we'll do as you suggested upon his return & make new iPhoto library! Thanks! Will report back!

  • Iphoto - get spinning ball when importing photos

I just bought a brand new mac book pro.  I had all of my info from my old mac book pro in time machine.  The first time I turned on the new one it asked if I had a time machine backup - short story I restored all of my personal files (no applications).
I was able to import photos once since then.  I have 3 sd cards - not one of them can be imported.  It recognises the card and asks me if I want to import.  I have even tried to only import 1 photo - no matter what I do, I still get the spinning ball and nothing gets imported (I finally have to force quit).
I attempted to repair the library, but it never finishes.  After hours of waiting I end up force quitting it.
One forum mentioned re-installing, but the mac book pro did not come with any disks (yes you read that correctly).

Yes, occurs in both RAW & JPEG

  • Running Mail.app give spinning ball and freezes computer

My wife and I have different accounts on an iMac (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.7.4. Her Mail.app has recently stopped working. When she launches Mail.app, the computer freezes and she sees the spinning ball. On my side of the computer, the Mail.app is still working. Any suggestions on how I can get her Mail program running again?
    Thank you.

    Donald and others:
This problem has been ongoing for about a week now. During that time, my wife has logged in and out of her account several times, and I’ve  rebooted the iMac several times. I've also run fsck, repaired disk permissions, and rebuilt the directory with Diskwarrior. But  Mail.app still isn't working.
I don’t know how it’s done nowadays, but there used to be plist files that stored preferences for particular apps. Every now and then one of those files would become corrupted,  and when that happened, the performance of the app would be negatively affected. At times, the problem could be solved simply by deleted the right preference files. I bring up this subject because, at lease in some crude sense, Mail.app is behaving as if it had a corrupted plist file.
Anyway, if someone would tell me what steps I should go through to attempt to solve this problem, I would appreciate it.
    Thank you.

  • LOOOONG delays processing commands, spinning wheels for minutes on end despite plenty of RAM and solid-state memory.

This seems to have coincided with installing Yosemite, had no problems with Mavericks. Have read that it can happen with older or low-spec Macs, but this is a top of the line MacBook Pro Retina, 13", late 2013, 2.8 GHz Intel core i5, 8Gb RAM, 12% memory free. Long delays before obeying commands. I am so sick of that spinning wheel!

Have tried the various things suggested, but it is still lagging intermittently, sometimes hanging fire for a couple of minutes while the wheel spins. Have run Etrecheck and this is the report:

  • Finder freezes (spinning beach ball) for minutes when in column view

Just in the last weeks, I get the spinning beach ball when I try to select an item in the column view. Doesnt happen with a folder, which just opens up another pane.
The beach ball continues for a couple of minutes, then it stops and the item is viewable.
This happens also when trying to open files from applications (in the column view)
    Powermac G4, Dual 1.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

First, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.
If that does'nt help, check out his Spinning Beachball link.
    Cheers!

  • Spinning ball of death upon launch

    Hello,
Suddenly, Color will only get to the launch window where the list of projects to open are and it essentially crashes. The spinning beach ball spins and I have to force quit. A while back, I switched the render directory to a dedicated drive, rather than the default system drive. I ran Color with out any issue until now, out of the blue this. So I can not use color at all and I have 4.5T of material waiting to be graded. Please help. Is there a way to "trash prefs" with Color? I am using 1.0.2 and don't want to upgrade because I am in the middle of a project.

I doubt its the render directory.
There are advantages to moving to 1.0.4 (RedFlow) and there is no "Trash Preferences" fix, and even when people do manage to manually find the file to do that, it has never been reported to have had any effect at all.
"Hang on launch" does happen... sometimes its a hardware issue, possibly a broken path. Bad sector on the hard drive? does Disk Utility have anything to say for itself?

  • Mail constantly showing spinning ball for any action for any version of

For Any action in Mail, I constanly get the spinning beach ball. This has happened with all versions of Yosemite. i'm using imac (2009). There have been numerous complaints about this problem on other forums, but no solution yet.

  • Slow Mac with recurrent spinning ball of doom

    Please help,
My Mac has always been slow since I had it and migrated my PC content to my Mac.  I have run EtreCheck and hope that this might illuminate the cause of my issues, but worry that it may not.  ANYTHING I ask the Mac to do will be slow and inevitably cause a spinning ball for a while.  I have kept the system up to date.  I have a lot of photos in iPhoto but can't imagine this can be the cause?
Any help is much appreciated.  The Etrecheck output is below:
    Many thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
    Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
