IPhoto 09 face recognition

I would like to know if the iPhoto 09 face recognition feature is ON by default and can't be switched off even if we feel we don't need it.
The reason I ask is that, after a year of Leopard, I am really exasperated at this Spotlight regularly monopolizing 95% of processor time, uncontrollably trying to index the whole Universe, just in case I might want to search the contents of files, a feature that is ON by default and can't be switched off even if we feel we don't need such an overkill process.
Same with Time Machine, that starts archiving everytime an external drive is plugged in, unless we rush to the Time Machine System Preferences and navigate to the Confidential tab to kill the already running indiscretion.
I just hope that iPhoto 09 didn't join this recent un-Apple philosophy that uncontrollably overworks processors and noisy fans, temporarily slowing the fastest computer in the World to the speed of my first Mac SE, just because it decides you're an idiot that might not know its own needs.
Sorry about that !
I just had to let it out ...

If you find that Spotlight is “regularly monopolizing 95% of processor time“ then you have a problem with Spotlight. This is not how i works on nay of my machines. Perhaps you need to troubleshoot that.
I was able to turn off Time machine with no difficulty. Perhaps you need to read the help.
The faces feature use a one time scan of the iPhoto Library when you first launch 09. Thereafter it does nothing at all unless you use it.

  • Iphoto face recognition confirmation not working

I have an interesting issue with iPhoto. I have about 20 Faces set up and when I open several, not all, it tells me that I have a certian number of "additional photo's" that the person may be in. When I confirm the additional faces the same number comes right back with the exact same faces each time. I can keep confirming them but they just continue to come back and need to be done again. Also, the number it is saying does not match the number of photo's I need to confirm.
I only have one iPhoto library. I have tried run  the detect missing faces routine but that did not fix the issue. I am not sure what to try next.
I have iPhoto '11 and up to date with all software updates.
    Thanks...Lenny

Let's start with the crashing, as you need to fix that first.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for the Faces issue. I'm not sure what the precise issue is as you supply rather a lot of unnecessary comment, and so it's hard to figure out what the problem is. So fwiw, here's a couple of comments:
    1. There's no dragging only naming. There's no Folder.
    2. To reject mutiple suggestions: hold down the alt key and drag across the thumbnails.

  • Improving iphoto faces recognition for babies by using birthday data

Just wondering about some ideas for improving faces suggestions. If faces knew the birthdays of people, it would not suggest the 2nd or 3rd sibling - for example in photos dated before they were born.
Just going through a large library and organising it for the first time in iphoto. It's not surprising how many baby photos of siblings of the same family it mistakes. The incorrect suggestions could easily be decreased, for the first few years in particular, if iphoto knew the date those people were born and checked it against the date of the photo.
Likewise if it knew the city or country which people lived in or had visited (with dates of visit etc.), it could provide more accurate suggestions, assuming you had already entered places data for photos.
If iPhoto knew birthdays, it could perhaps increase the probability of suggesting this baby or it's parents etc - assuming it knew these things, and i guess this could involve linking in with a genealogy program, or entering some similar basic data into iPhoto.
Overall, this could save some time and allow more ticks than retypes for faces suggestions. It wouldn't take too long to enter in very basic data for people coming up regularly in photos, and could save a lot of time with faces.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback for feature suggestions. That's the route to the developers.

  • HT3442 How do you correct the spelling of a name in Face recognition

How do I change a name in iPhoto face recognition where it is spelt incorrectly?

You're welcome. Then you're not doing it right. Double click on the name until it's selected - the background will turn dark grey. Then you can edit it.

  • Face recognition endless

ML and IPhoto: Face recognition is working endless since 2 days! Due to that drag and drop pictures in albums is not possible anymore. Tried rebuilding Library etc. but no success. Tried deleting faces.db but still no success. Face recognition is still running even faces are all finished.

So you rebuilt with iPhoto's own tools? If they fail then my next step would be to download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How do I turn off faces recognition in iphoto

how do I turn off faces recognition in iphoto?  I mean forever!!

So by deleting the "Face Profile" or whatever it's called for the individual Faces keeps searching for, you think that's not a solution?
The actual pictures identified by faces are not deleted. Only the avatar and name you list to be looked for within faces is what you're removing.
Do you have a better solution? I'm all ears.

  • No face recognition in iPhoto on my iPad 2

Hello, thank you for opening this thread.
Today I uploaded the photo for the first time on to my iPad 2. When I open the photos, there are Photos, Albums, Events, Places, but there is no "Faces."
I searched the discussion board but I could not find an answer how to let iPhoto do the face recognition.
    Could someone please help me?
    Thank you!!

Faces will only show as an option in the Photos app on the iPad if you've synced photos from your Mac which have 'faces' associated with them (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236 : 'iPhoto ’09, you can also add your Faces, Places, and Events to your device.', and the manual 'Events and Faces must first be configured in iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then synced to iPad') - i.e. it must be associated with photos prior to syncing them to the iPad.
If you've synced photos with Faces to the iPad and they aren't showing, then try closing the Photos app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with Photos 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Photos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto '11 . . . Don't want face recognition?

Just upgraded and iPhoto '11 is busy doing its face detection trick on my 15GB library.
It estimates about an hour remaining but I suspect it will be much longer.
I don't want face recognition so if I click on "Pause" will that stop the process permanently without any ill effects or is there another way to turn off face detection?

There's no way to disable Faces in iPhoto.
Search on Old Toads posts. He describes a way to lock the db file so that nothing is saved, but frankly, once the initial scan is completed it really makes no difference in the world to using the app. Just ignore it.

  • Do the iPhoto have face recognition in iPad version?

I have installed iPhoto in my new iPad, but can't  finding face recognition function

Any other apps have this function?

  • IPhoto 11 face recognition has lousy results!

New iMac user here.  I am loading all of my photos into iPhoto 11 year by year so I can identify Faces and locations.  The Faces recognition feature is doing a lousy job!  Even with a series of photos taken on the same day Faces seems to only recognize the same person about a third of the time.  Sometimes it will give a wild guess, but most of the time it just labels everything as unidentified.  I've labeled over 1000 photos already. Shouldn't Faces be more accurate by now? Is there anything I can do to improve this?

Yeah it is terrible, I wish they could swap in how Picasa handles face recognition. I'm really torn as Picasa is incredible at facial recognition, but the rest of the app is terrible. iPhoto is the opposite.

  • Is it possible to switch off face recognition at iphoto? It's very bad

i've no found possibilities to switch off the face recognition at iphoto.

    Hi MikePGallagher,
I think this depending on your notebook that you purchased...
Can you tell us what notebook you have exactly, please?

  • How can I disable the "faces" recognition feature in iPhoto.  I don't use it and find it very annoying.  Thank you.

how can I disable the "faces" recognition feature in iPhoto.  I don't use it and find it very annoying.  Thank you.

I am afraid you will just have to ignore it.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 face recognition slow with large number of photos ( 20,000)

I have a new fast Imac with new Iphoto 9.5.1. I have >20,000 photos. When I use face recognition with people who have >50 photos associated with them, the rolling ball continues for 20-40 seconds. I didn't have this with the same number of photos with my old Imac2009 with Iphoto 9.4.3, 2011.
    Thanks.

That is probably still the initial setup for face recognition for you new iPhoto version.  Once the "Faces" database has been rebuild, the performance  should get better. Give it a day or two.  If the problem persists, back up your iPhoto library and rebuild it.
Hold down the key combination alt/option- command ⌥⌘ firmly and double click the iPhoto library to launch the First Aid Tools. Keep holding down the keys, until you are seeing the First Aid Panel.  Select the entry "Rebuild Database" from the panel and click "Rebuild".

  • IPhoto "faces" problem

I am using the latest iPhoto '11, v 9.3.  Just upgraded to Lion.  I had to "upgrade" my library that has worked fine under Snow Leopard.  After the upgrade, a large number of photos (not all) lost Faces identification that was there before.  Further, the Add a face... button is greyed out.  This means I am unable to add a Faces recognition of the people in the photo.  Please help.
        Thanks in advance.  Tom
