IPhoto 11...Thumbnails show, but pictures gone??

Recently I went under iPhoto to find a picture I needed from an event that happened last year.  When I went under iPhoto, all my thumbnails/events show just fine, but when I double click one of the pictures in the events and it shows in the large window a black triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.  This has happened with virtually all my photos.  I've tried holding down command + option and ran through each option listed there, to no avail...any other ways to recover my photos?
I'm on OS X 10.7.3 and iPhoto version 9.2.2.
Any help greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto 11: Thumbnails show as normal, but photos are blank

Hello everyone.   I have a problem that I bet is common, but I'm not seeing it here in the discussions, maybe from people describing it as different things.
I just opened iPhoto 11 to access some photos, went through the thumbnails, found the ones I wanted, clicked...and I get a black screen.   Same for ALL the photos I've tried.
I know there have been many people with problems after upgrading to iPhoto 11, but I have had it for some time without issues, in fact the most recent photos I'd imported into the program were a month ago, when it seemed to be working normally.
I made a backup copy of my iPhoto Library, and used two of the 'rebuild' functions, 'Repair the iPhoto Library Database' and 'Examine and Repair the iPhoto Library file permissions' but the problem is still there.
Will likely go ahead with the rest of the 'Rebuild' functions but would welcome some knowledgeable advice.
    Thanks in advance!

Yesterday I d/led the demo version of iPhoto Library Manager, opened it, and it immediately 'found' the Library and everything displayed correctly--within iPLM.
Curious if that would carry over to iPhoto itself, I then opened it and...it did.   Then I closed iPLM and iPhoto, reopened the latter by itself, and again it was fine.   24 hrs later it all seems back to normal.
I have no idea how iPhoto Library Manager works but it solved this problem.

  • IPhoto '09 - Thumbnails visible but no photos!  (exclamation mark)

    Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of pickle here and I hope someone can help me. I take photos pretty regularly. Nothing mind-blowing, but I use my iPhone to take pics of my dogs, my girlfriend, etc. I sync my phone pretty much everyday and I just realised today that I'm missing a bunch of photos that span over 4-5 months. The thumbnail for the album itself is BLANK, but when I go into the album all the thumbnails for the photos are still there. However, when I try to maximise the photo I get nothing but a big grey exclamation mark.
I have tried different things like 'Open in Finder' and expanding the iPhoto app to show the folders inside and then try to find the photos myself, but nothing seems to work. I have also tried rebuilding my library with no success. I checked my recent Time Machine save, but somehow the iPhoto backup shows the same events in my iPhoto having issues. I don't understand how this could have happened, because I upload and sync my iPhone so often that I should've noticed at one point over the last month that my photos were missing - I have trouble believing I could've missed these missing events over the last month every single time I synced. But my last save shows the same thing and I don't understand how this is possible. I'm stupid for not having backed up my photo collection another way, but I thought I was being pretty careful.
Is there a bug that can cause this? What else can I do to get my photos back? or am I simply S.O.L.? I have read about many horror stories about iPhoto 09 but nothing that covers my situation closely enough to help me.
Any help would be appreciated. I apologise if I wasn't clear or if I didn't give you enough details.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I have what I thought was a similar problem, only now I'm not so sure. It seems instead to be linked to the faces feature.
I recently migrated from a macbook to a macbook pro. However my 30K pictures are contained not on the computer but on a separate external HD. I plugged the HD into the new iphoto '09 and get all the thumbnails. However when I click on one the screen goes dark: no photo. I read this thread but before rebuilding anything, since the photos wouldn't have really been affected by migration assistant, I don't think, I decided to just quit iphoto and see if things fixed themselves this way. When I reopened iphoto indeed the pictures do load at first, but then after faces starts scanning it stops bringing up any photos.
So.... it takes a very long time to scan 30K faces but when it finally does, I get instructions to click on a photo, then on faces and start identifying photos. I can't get that far because, again, when I click on a photo the faces feature does highlight, only I can't see the photo.
¿ Does it really make sense to rebuild the library under these circumstances? I don't see how it can have been affected by the migration.
¿ Any ideas how to get faces to stop disabling access to the full photos, if that's what's happening?
Many, many thanks for your thoughts....
p.s. The old library was set up for iphoto '07 (or whatever came before iphoto '09) and upon trying to open up in iphoto '09 I was prompted to tweak the library for the new software ... I wonder if that could have resulted in a need to rebuild?
    TIA!!

  • Thumbnail shows but the photo does not open

I can see the thumbnails for the pictures in an album, but when I click on the picture I get a large exclamation point in a triangle. Do I have to rebuild?

. I have used a clean up software from the app store (Duplicate cleaner for iPhoto), but the problem started before that.
Duplicate cleaner ccan have made it worse, if you let it remove the originals. That is, what the exclamation mark is indicationg - missing originals.

  • My pictures and events in iphoto are not showing but are represented by a dotted outline. What did I do and how can I get the images back?

I have a couple thousand pictures in iphoto divided into several folders. While working with them the images disappeared and are only represented by dotted outlines where the picture was. Events are also represented this way. When the cursor is run across them the photo will appear briefly, but will not pull up. I am not able to view them for long. What is causing this and how do I fix it?
    Any ideas?

Going forward when you have iPhoto problems you will probably get a faster response by posting in the iPhoto forum. I would recommend Rebuilding the iPhoto library.

  • Iphoto 9.6 shows zero pictures

I’ve been struggling with iphoto for several months.  When I open iphoto, it looks like I have never uploaded pictures.  However iphoto library info says 76.65GB of memory used of data since 2009.  I made a back-up copy of the folder and even tried to replace the folder to no avail.  I tried to rebuild the folder with iphoto library manager, but received a message of no photos still in iphoto.  Here is a copy of the process:

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Master' or 'Old masters'.
Is there one?  Look inside. Are your photos there?
Make no changes - just report back with the result.

  • IPhoto event not showing all pictures

Photo (stored as .jpg format) does not appear in its iPhoto event directory. It was created by stitching two photos into one. Original two photos continue to appear but not the stitched pic. The file does appear under Documents --> All Images; file info says it is located in the directory where its two "parent" photos are. This has happened with other photos I import and create new ones from the original set. When I attempt to drag the stitched photo from All Images into its supposed iPhoto directory, I get an error message saying "Unreadable File." Why do these pictures not appear?

If you saved them into the iPhoto library then it will not work - you must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the contents or structure of the iPhoto library - iPhoto is a relational database using SQL and all photos must be imported into iPhoto
Set the stitch program as the external editor (iPhoto preferences) and open both photos in it to edit using iPhoto - do the stitch and save the resulting photo to the desktop doing a save as and import the stitched photo into iPhoto from there

  • IPhoto doesn't show thumbnails anymore

I actually figured this out- I am posting this as a solution, not a problem. It frustrated me but I figured it out.
    THE PROBLEM:
You click on an "event" and it brings up a picture from that event, however you can only see one picture. Clicking left-right on either the buttons or the keyboard move you to different events, not to different pictures. You have tried to go to "View -> Thumbnails -> Show" but it's all gray, meaning theoretically you ARE in thumbnail view, even though you can only see the one picture.
    THE REASON & SOLUTION:
The possible reason you are having this problem is the magnification slider in iPhoto on the bottom right. While in thumbnail view, apparently, you can zoom all your thumbnails in to a point where it's only showing one picture- but you cannot browse the rest of the album or event this way. If you are having the problem above, then your magnification slider should be all the way to the right. Move it to the left, and other thumbnails should start to appear. Eventually you see all your thumbnails again. You can still scroll through all the photos using the full-screen thumbnail view by clicking/scrolling up and down, not left to right. There should be a scroll bar visible on the right. Its not obvious like on these discussion boards, but its there.
Hope that helps. I would like to have Apple change this behavior- it will deffinetly frustrate a lot of people.

this is a known bug (or maybe a "feature" - who knows)
Please provide feedback to Apple re this to be sure they understand users view of it - iphoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • IPhoto 6.0.6 update picture thumbnails

I had my camera hooked up to my Mac. When I opened up iPhoto for the second time, I had to update the thumbnails. The camera had a few pictures on it and iPhoto made thumbnails for those pictures. But not for the pictures from our last few years. The pictures are there, but no thumbnails. How can I make thumbnails for these pictures?

Would it help if I deleted iPhoto 6.0.6 from my Mac, and put iPhoto 6.0.5 and see if I can look at my pictures?
    No.
The issue is not with the iPhoto application but with your Library. Changing the application will not change the Library.

  • Iphoto thumbnails ok but have triangle with an exclamation mark when I click on the thumbnail so can't view it as a bigger picture.

In my iPhoto the thumbnails are all present but when I click on them the bigger picture is not visible and I can see a triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Has anyone got any suggestions?

That means iPhoto has lost the link to the original file.
    What version of iPhoto?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
(A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.)
Have you used any apps to "clean" or "tune up" your Mac recently?
Have you deleted any images from 'All My Files' or 'All My Photos'?

In fact, iPhoto indicates that I have zero photos in the library while at the same time indicating the file size as 12.5 GB.

If your old iPhoto version was iPhoto 7, you need to run the iPhoto Library upgrader:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1523
It will install itself in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.
Run it, and after that, you should be able to open your iPhoto Library with iPhoto '11.

  • Pictures gone after upgrade to iPhoto 9.4.2

    Dear All.
After the upgrade to 9.4.2 we have a numer of problems:
    1.     All pictures are gone.  iPhoto shows frames with no content.
    2.     I had saved libraries in different places at different times during the last couple of months.  All the libraries ave the same date of the last changes to it: 31.3.2012.  These dates must be different as we have been working with these libraries almost every day.
    3.     The one dated 31.3.2012 can be opened.  Besides not showing any pictures (see 1. above) there seem to be two years (2011 and 2012) worth of pictures missing.
Please help, as this is a major desaster.
    Thomas.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
