IPhoto 6.0.6 importing distorted/striped/damaged/unrecognizable image files

I have been having trouble importing photos from my camera into iPhoto for a while. Thought it may have been my old Canon PowerShot A80, but I just bought a brand new Canon Rebel XSi and I am having the same issues.
Whether I use the USB cable directly from the camera into my tower's USB port (have tried each available port) or I insert the card into the SD slot in my Epson WorkForce 600 printer, the results are the same: some images import correctly, some import severely segmented/distorted or striped with crazy technicolors, and some wont import at all and I get a popup that tells me some files were of "unrecognized file type or damaged files" with a list of the files that say temp/var file. What is going on here??? Help!
PS The same issues also occur when importing with the EOS utility instead of iPhoto.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you shooting Raw or Jpeg? For Raw support on that camera you need 10.5.4 or better.
You might want to look closely at the camera if the problem is also occurring with Canon's own software.

  • IPhoto issues after 10.5 install, thumbnails but no image files

After installing Leopard I have found that random photos from different events in iPhoto 7.1.1 have completely disappeared. OK, not completely -- the thumbnail images remain but the image file is completely gone. Vanished, it would appear, from my hard drive. A spotlight search reveals nothing. I am finding more and more missing as I go about my business. I click on an image to edit or use in iWeb and I get a gray exclamation point.
I don't think that I have synched my iPod video since upgrading to Leopard so perhaps there is hope of recovery? Anyone know what is going on?

  • Import does not recognize old image files that have no extension

Just discovered that the import facility does not see (or accept) old Mac image files that have no extension -- even if these files have a Mac "kind" that is an image such as "Adobe Photoshop file".
You can manually add an extension to the file (and respond to an "are you sure?" dialog). Then the file will be seen and accepted.
This is extremely dangerous (and painful to manually correct) since you think you are seeing all images in the import box, but you are not.
In fact, I deleted huge image directories after having satisfactorally (I thought) imported them into Aperture many months ago. Most of the old extension-less files had been updated and did have extensions in later versions. However, I missed one important image and looked everywhere for it.
By a miracle I had a backup of my image directories on a Power Book that I am retiring and finally noticed that the missing image was there just before deleting that directory too! I then figured out why this image (and many others) had not been imported. So, now I am going through manually and adding extensions.
Does anyone know a better way -- to get Aperture to recognize extension-less images? If not, this needs to fixed in the next version as it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well there's an idea...probably would need to go into Bridge <g> to do that most efficiently .. or Automator.
It turns out that I already had added extension to most (but not all) images in my main image directory and so they got into Aperture alright. I just have to go through all the images in the backup I just found (where many did not get extensions) to find the ones that Aperture missed. So far, there have been just a couple more...
The real problem is that Aperture should not be missing these, even if they are archaic. At the very least, Aperture's import should give a warning that there are files in a folder that it is not going to import AND is not even showing. Otherwise this is a serious gotcha!

  • Will iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) allow me to resize image files to 60 kb?

I'm sorry if this is a very simple task but I've searched and cannot find an answer.  I need to be able to upload some photos to the Gardenweb site and they say that the maximum size of image files allows is 60 kb.  I searched my iPhoto help and could find nothing about resizing photos for uploading to websites - I also did a Google search but the only program that is suggested for this is called Irfanview and only works with Windows.
I would be very grateful if someone can point me to how I can do this with iPhoto or, alternatively, another program that I could download that would allow me to resize my images.
    Cheers

Hi Terence ... As I'd already exported the jpeg to my Desktop I decided to try with another image from iPhoto.
I selected the image in iPhoto then went to File - Export and on the ensuiung 'File Export' tab chose JPEG, quality LOW: Size CUSTOM and then set Maximum dimension to 500 px.  I then exported the image to my Desktop and Get Info shows that the file size is 16 KB on disk.  I repeated the exercise changing the quality to MEDIUM but left everything else the same.  This resulted in a file size of 29 KB on disk.  I repeated the exercise again, changing the quality to HIGH.  This resulted in a file size of 45KB on disk.  Finally, I repeated the exercise changing the quality to MAXIMUM, which resulted in a file size of 168 KB on disk.  So, I now know that I can export my images from iPhoto and, following your advice, set the maximum dimension of the image to 500 px and, even using High quality for the JPEG I will get a file size that is well within the maximum file size permitted by the website.
I don't know whether it's relevant but the original image was 3.3MB.
Thank you so much for your help!  I was beginning to feel extremely dumb not being able to figure this one out.

  • IPhoto : how to recover imported photos that are now "*.ipmeta" files

Yesterday I imported photos from my Nikon camera in iPhoto. I imported them in an album. Then I deleted all photos from the camera and empty the trash (mac book).
Today I open iPhoto and I don't find the photos any more : neither in iPhoto nor in My Pictures.
Using the Finder (search on Yesterday), I found is a list of files such as "photo.002723.ipmeta". It looks like these files may correspond to the photos, but I cannot open them with iPhoto.
How can I recover my photos ?
I understand my mistake was to import the photos in iPhoto without first moving them to My Pictures.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I understand my mistake was to import the photos in iPhoto without first moving them to My Pictures.
It wasn’t, unless you’re running a Referenced Library. Are you?
Then I deleted all photos from the camera
You can probably recover the photos from your camera card with an app like MediaRecover.
Today I open iPhoto and I don't find the photos any more : neither in iPhoto nor in My Pictures.
Are you sure you don’t have a damaged database file?
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    photo.002723.ipmeta
These are database files of about 4kb each. They are not your photos and your pics cannot be recovered from them.

  • Importing an image file from a folder not inside iPhoto????

I can't find a way to just import a jpg or other image file into iMovie O8. Do you really have to put it in iPhoto and then bring it in.
    Thanks - Larry

Do you really have to put it in iPhoto and then bring it in.
No, you can simply drop them to the "Project" window from the desktop to automatically create a "Still Frame" sequence.

  • Iphoto faces gone after import from icloud

Hi I am using iphoto 9.6(910.29) in Yosemite and have around 8000 photos in the library and faces recognised for about 30 people so there are thousands of entries in the db.
After importing about 5 photos from icloud to prepare for a slide show at a funeral next week I went to id the faces on the imports and list of possible faces seemed to shift to my iphone contacts , not the list of people who's faces I already ID'd in iphoto
So the effect is I have lost the faces already identified and now only have three entries on my faces corkboard. I tried turing icloud shareing off and on to no effect.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to roll this back?

When I click on Faces, it's empty, the import from iPhoto forget to import faces?
    Hello Kris,
How did you imort from iPhoto? If you import using the Aperture Apllication menu
         File -> Import -> iPh.oto Library
then all your Faces should be transferred from iPhoto.
Which of the two buttons in Aperture do you use to show your "Faces"? There is the "Faces" button in the Library panel and the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar. Both behave differently. The "Faces" button in the Library panel  will reveal all faces, whereas the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar will only show the faces detected in the in the currently selected item (folder, project). So it may appear that faces are missing, even if they are included in the Aperture Library.

  • Managing non-image files in iPhoto e.g. wav file

    Hi.
In the past I had a camera that wouldn't record video, but would record audio and saved them as .wav's. Previously I have managed and organized my photos independently using Explorer (during the dark days of Windows) and now through Finder, and this way I was able to keep these audio files in the same place as the pictures they were associated with. Having now tried to import these folders of images and .wav files I see that iPhoto will not accept files in .wav format, and the thought of having to keep them somewhere completely seperate from the images they're a part of really irks me.
Does anyone know of a way around this, or have a suggestion for somehow being able to manage the situation? I see video files are no problem for iPhoto to manage, which can even call Quicktime to play the videos if desired... surely there must be a way to deal with .wav's?
And since we're on the topic - what about other file formats? Most of my pictures (and audio) are from my travels, so ideally I'd like to be able to manage folders that can hold all of my photos, videos, soundfiles and text files (journals) in one place... Don't suppose this is a realistic dream yet is it?
    Thanks everyone

    No.
Placing any file inside your library folder will appear to not do anything. You won't see a placeholder or anything there. For that to happen, files must be imported. If the file type is not supported, iPhoto will refuse to import. In addition, those extra files inside your library could confuse the database. You might start getting a message upon launch that iPhoto needs to rebuild the thumbnails. But it could get worse. You could cause your database to become corrupted. In that case you would lose all of your metadata: titles, keywords, comments, ratings; lose the relationship between your originals and their edited versions; plus lose your albums, books, calendars, etc.
So no, it's not safe. Manage them yourself outside of the iPhoto Library folder. You could keep them in your Pictures or Music folder in a subfolder labeled Voice Recordings, or look into the software that TD recommended.
    Regards.

  • My image files will NOT show up when I import them

I CANNOT see my image files when I import them. This is the case regardless of whether I import them directly from my image files, or from my Flash library. They WILL NOT show up in the stage area, although the panel on the right shows the file! What can I do to correct this? I am using Flash CS4 which I need for my Digital Design classes through the Art Institute of Pittsburgh! I will FAIL this course if I can't get this program to work properly!!

Here are a few things to check:
Do you have anything else on Stage that might be covering them up? Is your target layer locked? Is the layer visibility turned off?
Are you doing this in an existing document, or a brand new document?

  • IPhoto 6 error on import

We are having problems importing photos from our new camera, a Canon A710 IS. We get the following error messages.
The following files cannot be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data.)
    /Applications/A710 Incoming/IMG_0014.JPG
    /Applications/A710 Incoming/IMG_0015.JPG
We have nearly a 100 gig of available hard drive space and 1.25 gig RAM.
Last night we read here about rebuilding our iPhoto Library. We tried that and are still having the same issue save for the first 30 image import. We can successfully remove the images from the camera via Image Capture and we are not having a problem using Picassa2 on the PC. iPhoto, however, continues to give this error even if we simply drag and drop from a desktop folder one file at a time.
We are still able to import with no problem with our Canon S1 IS. The file size has increased from 1.3mb to 3.7mb per image between the two cameras.

Here's a couple of other tests you can run:
1 - create a new temporary library and try to import those files. If they import OK your library may be damaged for some reason. In that case I'd try rebuilding it with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
If the don't import then it may be something associated with your account. Here's two ways to determine that:
1 - log into another account on your G4 and try to import those photos into a library there. Put them in the shared folder from the other account. If you don't have another account it's not a bad idea to create a non-admin account with no special add ons, etc. It's a great trouble shooting tool. If the files import there OK then it's an incompatibility with your primary account.
2 - the second method is to boot into Safe Mode and try importing into your primary library and the temp library.
    Good luck.

  • HELP:  How do you tell iPhoto 08 not to import dupes?

    Hi,
I was just looking at iPhoto 08 preferences and I can not see where I choose not to import duplicates... where or can you toggle this?
I imported from an external hard drive and I just dragged the top level folder into iPhoto to begin the import. I was never asked if I wanted to import the dupes or not....

    hassiman:
The photos do not have to be on the same drive as the library. I import from an external HD frequently and always get the duplicate warning if there are duplicates in the batch.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. iPhoto doesn't not have to be closed to run it, just idle.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto says it cannot import my photos b/c they may be an unrecognized file or the file may not contain valid data. The operation could not be completed. Error code is: ImageCaptureCoreError-9905.

Unable to download photos from my camera. iPhoto returns an error message that states: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file or the files may not contain valid data). FILE NAME: 100_0490.JPG      REASON: com.apple.ImageCaptureCoreError- 9905.  WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?  Did not have a problem importing photos under the LEOPARD OS, however, now that I have upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 the iPHOTO app is not performing the imports.

Are you using Photos, or iPhoto? Maybe you've got a corrupt file on your camera. I would try using the image capture application to import the bad picture to my desktop. If it works and the picture looks ok,  then delete that pic from the camera, then try to import into iphoto again. You can then import the pic it was saying was bad from your desktop.
Or, try downloading all the pics using image capture and then import from the download folder.
