Iphoto 6 upgrade creates duplicates

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 6. From recent experiences I did create a backup copy on my external drive. My iPhoto 5 library appeared to be complete. iPhoto 6 said I had the same 6600 photos that had been in the iPhoto 5 library. The folders also showed up just like the ones in iPhoto 5. I then started doing some editing from the main library, thinking that photos deleted here would also be deleted from the subfolders this however was not the case. It was then that I noticed duplicates of the same photos in the main library. I also noticed that the images had the same identification numbers. I have also noticed that the main library is in a rather haphazard order. New photos I have downloaded from my camera seem to be fine. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of these duplicates? After five years of working with iPhoto I guess I should know that an upgrade will not be without problems. Thanks!

I have the same issue. I was just going through my photo library tonight (for the first time under iPhoto6) and noticed duplicates. The strange thing is, however, that not all photo's have been duplicated. Some photos have actually been duplicated 3-4 times.
I simply have gone through and carefully deleted the duplicates. I think it might have something to do with the number of times you edited the photos in iPhoto 5. Perhaps a bug? Now my only concern is that some of my photo's got dumped during transition. Anybody else??

  • Every time I sync my iPhone (IOS 7) in iPhoto it creates duplicate images

Every time I sync my iPhone (IOS 7) in iPhoto it creates a duplicate, but not on my Mac, how do I slove or fix this? even if I delete all of the duplicates manually on my phone or Mac, if I sync, it creates duplicates

Have you ever had all 7 of them synced before? Are these ringtones you made yourself? Is there a chance they could exceed 30 seconds in length? Is there a chance you have moved the original file location on the computer? May need the answers to a couple more questions to try and determine an answer.

  • I like to manually upload my photo's to my computer, then import them to iPhoto. My problem with this is that now I have duplicates and it's taking up way to much space on my computer. Is there any way to stop iPhoto from creating duplicates like this?

I always manually transfer photo's from my SD card to a new folder under Pictures, and then import them into iPhoto. After doing this for quite some time I know realize that I have all these duplicate photo's between iPhoto library and Pictures and a ton of wasted space. I want to continue to upload photo's to a new folder so I can organize them myself and then access them anytime through the finder, if I upload them through iPhoto then they're stored in "iPhoto Library" which can only be accessed through iPhoto. Is there anyway to stop iPhoto from duplicating photo's and just use it to catalog photo's from Pictures? Also on a side note, when using multiple SD cards in one folder, my camera often comes up with duplicate names for totally separate photo's, anyone have an suggestions for this?

Yes you can set iPhoto to run in Referenced mode but don't. It makes more work for zero advantage, is unnecessary and only storing up problems for the future.

has how to do, and why you shouldn't.
Using iPhoto makes the question about the filenames moot too... Other than that you'll need to renae the files.

  • Import to iPhoto Library created duplicate folders and pics?!

I imported all my pics from hard drives into iPhoto Library and now have duplicates of each folder with pictures. How can I quickly clean this up; i.e., 64'000+ pics.

This is where I see it.
I have the pictures already reduced down from 64'000 to 52'000.
From the picture you can see three (3x)  "New Folder (17)".........AaargggHHH!
Also, you will see excact duplicates for "Abigail", "New Folder (16)" and "20090915".
I spent 2 days to get it reduced to this point and have only covered 1/8th of the library......(more Aaaarggghhh!!!)

  • IPhoto creates duplicates when I click "Edit"?

I've just upgraded to iPhoto '11 and installed it on my new 15" MBP, imported my old iPhoto library, and everything seems lovely.
BUT: whenever I click "Edit in external application," iPhoto creates a duplicate of the photo, and sends the duplicate to Photoshop. When I quit photoshop, the duplicate image remains in iPhoto. This duplicate remains even if I don't make any changes in Photoshop.
Is this a new behavior? It's pretty frustrating. Any way to turn it off?

Very frustrating. I make a lot of panoramas, and I need to open four or more adjacent images at once to perform Photomerge in Photoshop. So now every time I do this, I'm going to have a whole bunch of pointless duplicates cluttering up my drive? What was the thought behind this?
Yes, I'll certainly provide feedback, and I also hope/trust Apple is reading these discussions...

  • Does uploading iPhoto libraries from multiple Macs with the same photos create duplicates in the new Photos app?

I have 4 Macs and I had the same iPhoto library on each of them. When I chose to turn on the iCloud Photo Library on each of them, each Mac, each one of them uploaded the library to iCloud Photo Library.. Now it appears that I have many duplicates in the new Library. Is it adding each of the 4 libraries to the mix? It's a real problem as I have 25,000 pictures - 70GB in my library. So paused the upload on 2 of the Macs about half way through in case it is creating duplicates, until I get some answers. Any help would sure be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm doing one mac at a time and seeing how it works. Howev the upload is so slow, who knows when it will be done.

  • Many events and photos are missing from my iphoto.  I have time machine and would like to restore without creating duplicates. The issue is although my photos are presently blank time machine/iphoto does see the file so importing them will create duplicat

For some unknown reason, events and photos in my Iphoto are appearing blank. The photos have a title / placeholder but no picture. I use time machine and have back ups, my goal is to restore the photos without creating duplicates. Unfortunately iphoto sees the blank photos as if the picture exists?  Help

If you want to use your back up you need to restore then entire Library from Time Machine, and then replace the damaged Library with it.

  • Using PSE9 as editor in iPhoto - Creates duplicate file

Am new to PSE 9.  In iPhoto 9, I have selected PSE9 as the editor.  After making any changes to a photo I am working on, it creates a duplicate thumbnail, file in iPhoto.  Following instructions from an Apple Discussion thread, it is only supposed to update the existing file in iPhoto, not create a duplicate.  Please advise.  Thanks.

Have iPhoto 11.  Have PSE as editor in iPhoto, which takes me right into PSE9.  Am doing a Save, and not Save As.  I do get a pop up window giving me JPEG save options, which I have Standard selected.  Thanks.

  • IPhoto creating duplicates on import

    I am using iPhoto 6.0.6.
When I am adding photos to library from disk, iPhoto appears to create duplicates of some of the photos (random set, apparently) and displays the thumbnails of the original and the duplicate in the main window. One appears to be stored in the Originals folder, the other in the Modified folder, but why are both thumbnails showing up?
I have wiped the whole library and started again with a small set of photos that I am 100% sure contains no duplicates and yet, they reappear.
I have duplicate annihilator but it's algorithms don't recognize the dupes for some reason.

This could happen if your camera creates 2 versions of a single shot. Does it have a setting where you get simultaneous RAW and jpeg? In that case, you would see one thumbnail for the jpeg in Originals, exactly as imported from the camera. The RAW would go into originals, as well, and a jpeg version would be created and stored in Modified. This would give the results you've seen: one matching thumbnail in each folder. Right-click (control-click) on some of these duplicates. If any have the option "Show Original File" then choose it to locate the unmodified version - you can check if you are importing RAW files from your camera. Solution - turn off this feature in your camera. iPhoto can't control it.

  • Aperture 3 creating duplicates

i have just upgraded to Aperture 3. I love the new tools, but still getting use to organization of files. A3 seems to be doing weird things. As i started to delete some masters in a newly created library project, it creates 2 duplicates of some of the images in that project. When i trash them , it creates duplicates in subsequent images. What is going on ????

This is a year-old thread.  You'd be better served to start a new thread.
This page from the User Manual should help you find the "Do Not Import Duplicates" checkbox.  The User Manual is available on-line, and should be your resource of first recourse.  I searched for "Duplicates import"
Aperture, in identifying duplicates, scans for file name and date.  If you change the file name on import ("Rename Masters"), you will get duplicates.
The original thread is about Aperture showing duplicates for photos edited in iPhoto (afaict), which is a misunderstanding of Aperture's behavior.

  • How can I get IPhoto to identify duplicate photos so I can delete them?

I have accidently created copies of hundreds of photos in my library. Not sure how really. Can IPhoto identify the duplicates in my library so I can delete them on mass? Some of the them have three or four copies in different albums. I am concerned if I try to do the eliminating manually I will either miss some or delete something important.

You'll find an answer here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5716355&#5716355
I found the above by typing "duplicate" in the Search Discussions field at the top right of this page. You should try it before posting a question because you'll usually find the answer right away rather than waiting for a new response.

and how can i view in slide-show double pages instead of single pages?
    anybody has an idea?

    Stephan:
If you want to be able to view the book with iPhoto on the other Mac you'll have to copy the library containing the book to the other Mac. You won't be able to import that book into the other library.
Make a duplicate copy of the library containing the book and rename the folder "Book Library". Open it with iPhoto and delete all of the files that are not in the book. Then copy the Book Library folder to the other Mac and open. You can also burn the Book Library folder to a CD as a way to archive the book in case you decide to order another copy at a later date. I create a separate library for each book I create and order and archive it to CD when I've ordered.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?

Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. Some may be on the cloud but how can I save them? I haven't backed anything up and can't open iphoto to try. I/ve copied it onto my desktop but can't open that either!
Please help a t otal idiot!

Before you do anything else make a backup of your iPhoto library. Disk drives do fail regularly, and one day all your photos will be gone for sure, if you do not keep copies on a different drive.
You can simply drag theiPhoto library from your Pictures folder to a different disk to create a backup copy.
iphoto upgrade it says your photos will not be readable following update. Will my photos be lost?
You misunderstood the warning.  When you use a new version of iPhoto with yiur iPhoto library, the older iPhoto version will no longer bea ble to read the library, but naturally, the new version you are using now, will be able to show your photos.
So proceed  with the update - that is a routine warning, and is necessary, to be able to use your iPhoto library with the new version of iPhoto.

  • Error while creating duplicate repository

    Hi,
While creating a duplicate repository, i'm encountering the following error:
    "Unable to modify database"
Can anyone plz guide me on the same

    Hi Ketan,
I'm not sure what you mean by setting the DBMS settings to blank... in mds.ini? This used to work in the Console when using SQL Server, but now by default it's disabled (but if you're trying this in the Console, you'd get an error right away on the mount/create/duplicate screen).
I assume the verify/repair found no errors? Have you tried archiving and unarchiving the repository? It's a cheesy way to do a Duplicate operation -- maybe it will help you in the short term while we figure out what's going on (unless you can't unarchive because of the same error).
Are you using the administrator user (I think in Oracle it's called System) or a user that you created yourself? Is it a user that MDS/Console proposed to create for you when you first used this Oracle DBMS? (That would've been a long time ago, since you're upgrading from SP4 -- this user is fine, but one that you may have created yourself may not have all the right permissions.)
Could you please post the version number you're using, so I can find out if there are any known issues? Also, please make sure the version of the Oracle client on the machine that is running MDS is up-to-date with respect to the Oracle server (assuming they are not the same machine).
I will also do further investigation about the error in the log. Thank you for your patience; we will do everything we can to get you up and running as soon as possible!
