IPhoto 9.4.3 not seeing Library

Bit of a panic this morning.  Not only awoke to a Time Machine error saying my dedicated backup drive had suddenly become read-only and I needed to back up what I could and reformat the drive (thus losing months of backups), but as I was scowling at the error message iPhoto unexpectedly crashed after I plugged in my iPhone--and since refuses to see my 500gb library which goes all the way back to 2002 and is stored on an external 1TB hard drive.
All at once my seemingly foolproof system of having the iPhoto library on one external hard drive and a Time Machine backup of it on a separate external drive was for naught.  Many thousands of pictures and movies were suddenly gone in a scenario too implausible for me to have imagined.
After almost barfing on my keyboard I trashed the prefs and restarted iPhoto.  Then I restarted the machine about seventeen times.  Then I tried pointing iPhoto to the library by holding down <Option> at startup, then I tried rebuilding the database.  Then I tried iPhoto Library Manager which "scavenged" only about a third of the photos, and with no albums at all.  Plus 153gb of 500gb isn't much consolation, especially at 8:30 in the morning.
Lastly I simply tried using Finder and copied over the big Masters folder and Previews and Thumbnails and everything else, but no matter what I try when I launch iPhoto it presents me with "To get started with iPhoto..."
The one relief I have in this is that I have spot-checked the Masters folder and all 500gb of the jpg's and mov's are intact, up to and including the ones I imported the night before.  They're all sitting where they've always been on the external drive.  Since I copied them a replica is sitting on my iMac's hard drive too, but iPhoto will not recognize either library at all.
Back to almost barfing on my keyboard, and having spent all Sunday not the way I wanted to spend it I finally turn to the experts.  I need a little help here.
iPhoto 9.4.3
default library kept on external 1TB drive
using new 21.5" iMac on OS 10.8.5
Also using a Macally BTKey wireless keyboard which is about to be barfed on.

Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Something went wrong with iPad photo/Video import and now iPhoto on Mac does not see content.

I just connected my iPad (4.3.2) to my mac (10.5). It launched the synch process for photos and videos and everything went fine. I then clicked on one of the newly imported photos in iPhoto and it choked and ultimately closed the app and gave me message along the lines of "iPhoto quit Unexpectedly." I rebooted the machine and when it came up went to look in iPhoto and saw that the new photos/video were not there. They are still on the iPad (Fortunately!) However when I reconnect the iPad to the Mac it does not see any content to import. In essence it seems to think it did the import and is not aware that it lost the content.
There's a couple possible solutions I'm interested in. One, are the photos/video somewhere on the Mac and just need to be dug up? I nosed around a bit but found nothing. Then other solution would be is there some way to force iPhoto to reimport what's on the iPad, ignoring that it feels it's already done this?
    Thanks,
    Wil

Where did these photos come from to begin with? Did you import them from the iPad into iPhoto on your Mac? Is that what you are saying here?

  • I subscribed to a photo stream in iPhoto but I'm not seeing any photos

I'm using iPhoto 9.6 on a Macbook using Yosemite.  Someone shared a photostream with me.  I subscribed (using Yosemite) without any errors but I'm not seeing any photos.  I've confirmed with the person who created the photostream that there are photos in it (I've seen them first hand).  I've had this issue before on Mavericks so .  Anyone seen this before?  Any idea how to solve?

Not occurring for me, but you could try this:
This solved my question by adamnash on Oct 19, 2014 6:52 PM
    Solution:
I took a brute force approach:
    - I quit iPhoto
    - I launched Settings, went to iCloud, turned off Photo
    - I launched iPhoto
    - I verified that iCloud was off
    - I quit iPhoto
    - I went back to Settings, went to iCloud, turned on Photo
    - I launched iPhoto
It's now synching all the albums, although the one I published while in this broken case seems to have now disappeared.

  • Moving iTunes to new computer, using external HD, not seeing library in iTunes

    Hi all,
I got a new laptop running Windows 7.  I followed Apple's directions for how to move iTunes to a new computer using an external hard drive.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
All looks good until Part 5, Step 6 where it says "Open iTunes.  You've now moved all your music, playlists, and other information like play counts and ratings from your old computer to your new one."  Now, I can go into my music folder on the new laptop, click on iTunes, then on the music folder and all my music is there.  But when I open iTunes, none of the music is evident in the library.
Hoping this is simple user error!  Thanks, all.
    Lisa

Ideally you should copy the complete iTunes library structure - typically located at C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes - from the old computer to the new one.  It should look like this:
Assuming that your music and other media files are all contained within the iTunes Media folder and its subfolders you can move this iTunes folder and all its content from your old system to the corresponding location on the new one (i.e., place it in C:\Users\username\Music). If you've already installed and run iTunes on the new system, overwrite the files and folders already created in that location - this assumes that you've not added any content on the new system, i.e., you are just migrating your library from the old system to the new one, not merging different libraries on the two).
Then, just to be sure you are picking up the right library information, hold down the Shift key while starting iTunes on the new system.  You'll get this prompt:
Click Choose Library.. then navigate to and select the iTunes Library.itl file within the folders you just copied across.  Click OK - you're complete library - media, artwork, playlists, etc. - should now be available on the new system.
One further benefit of this approach - because you have replicated the library in full any iDevices will see this as "the same" library as you had on the old system, and sync operations will continue to work without getting a message about your iPod / iPhone being erased.  You should also make sure that you create and maintain a backup of your library (the full folder structure as illustrated above) as a safeguard against any future cause of data loss.

  • I do not see Library or Albums when creating books?

I want to be able to choose my photos from Library or albums while craeting a book in iPhoto 06, please tell me how I can see me photos while creating a book.
    Thank you,
    Sebastian

    Hi SebastianMacLuver,
The easiest way to create a book is to make an album containing all the images you think you might want to include in the book. Then select the album to create the book from. If you decide you want more photos from your library, select them in the library and drag them to the book icon in the source column. The new images will appear in the strip at the top of your book viewing window.

  • How to import iPhoto album from CD (not entire library)?

I am trying to set up a workflow where multiple people in multiple cities can export an album from iPhoto and send the CD to me. Once I receive it, I'll import it into my iPhoto library. I would like to import it directly in to Aperture though. What is the best way to do this?
Should I import into iPhoto then have my library linked to Aperture or should I keep everything in Aperture? I do not need to edit -- only catalog based on the keywords each person attaches to each photo. I don't think that exporting the photos by themselves (instead of the album they are in) gives me the comments field so I would lose the comments. That is why I need the entire album instead.
I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Terence,
Yes, they are using v7. The thing is, since I posted the question, I found that doing an album burn (not a file export) will save the data, but in a file other than the image file. When you mount the CD you just burned to in iPhoto, the data shows up in the comments field. When you import the data though, the comments don't get imported.
I found a third party utility called iPhoto Library Manager that takes care of this. It allows you to do a lot of stuff like imports, library merges, etc. that iPhoto doesn't do. Very handy little app, but I think iPhoto should at least allow you to import an album from another system with all the info intact (especially since it exports it into the xml file included with the photos).

  • Saved jpeg to iPhoto but it's not in library..

I tried saving it again but was prompted that it already existed in iPhoto. I only have 25 photos in my iPhoto library so I know it's not there. Where did it go and what's the best way to move a jpeg image (such as from an email) into iPhoto?
    Thanks, Sheila

    Hi sheila,
some people have had no luck with the "add to library" menu for the attachment in Mail.app. It works for me, but for others it doesn't.
Is that the method you used.?
If not, and this is what I am guessing you did, you put the image manually into the iPhoto Library folder. It will not show up within iPhoto this way, it needs to be imported/add to library, or dragged into an open Library window (iPhoto is open and your images are showing in the right column)
Now there are many ways to move an image into the library.
-Drag the image from the body of the email onto the iPhoto icon in the dock
-Drag the image from the email into an open iPhoto Library window
-click and hold on the arrow next to attachments and scroll to add to iPhoto
    there's probably more ways too.
Oh, I forgot to tell you to find your image, navigate back into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and drag the image back from where you put it to the desktop.
Now drag it into an open iPhoto Library window.

  • XCode 3.0 not seeing library path

    Hi
I'm running XCode and even though I've set my library search paths it refuses to find libraries in /usr/lib, although when I copy these exact files to /opt/local/lib it links against them fine. Library in question is GLEW and the compiler complains it cannot find -lGLEW even though I've added the libGLEW.dylib as a library to link against.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Wow. It has been, like, 12 seconds since I last responded to someone who has a mysterious problem with some open-source tool involving fink or macports. Anytime anyone mentions /opt I get very suspicious.
Normally, most open-source tools and libraries are installed in /usr/local. You shouldn't be installing anything into /usr/lib or /opt unless you really know what you are doing and have a good reason. Otherwise, you'll just be stuck and will have to get support from whomever insists on using /opt.
    According to the GLEW website:
On Unix, typing make install will attempt to install GLEW into /usr/include/GL and /usr/lib. You
can customize the installation target via the GLEW_DEST environment variable if you do not have
    write access to these directories.
So they are mucking around in system libraries, which is a bad idea. That fact alone makes the GLEW project suspect. At a minimum, you should define GLEW_DEST to be /usr/local. Using -IGLEW should work with no futher effort.

  • Yosemite bug? Itunes Home sharing does not see library on additional drive

I have a 2011 iMac 27" with two internal drives, an 256GB SSD main drive and a 3TB hard drive (/Volumes/Media). My iTunes library is held on the 3TB drive for space reasons, and the correct path to the library is in Preferences > Advanced. I have enabled Home Sharing, and have made sure that the sharing tab is correctly set to allow all content to be visible.
On my 2010 Macbook Pro, I can connect to the iMac iTunes through Home Sharing (there is an entry in the drop down list at top left), but I can see no content at all.
If I change the path to back to the default library in Preferences on the SSD drive (i.e. /Users/david/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media) rather than the real library (/Volumes/Media/Itunes/Itunes Media) and import a song, then that song immediately becomes visible on the Macbook Pro.
Therefore, the actual mechanism for streaming the content seems to be working, but it only seems to work if the library is on the default disk.
    Is this

  • ITunes not seeing library files

I finally got a new computer, and so finally transferred my iTunes data from my work laptop to my new computer.
The songs appear to have made it ok, but the data files did not, meaning I've lost all my play counts, ratings and playlists (of which the first two are the most important).
Since I'm on dialup, I did have to go back to the CD version of iTunes I had (6.0.4) instead of 6.0.5 that was on the laptop - is this the issue?
Is there any way to get this to work?
(I still have the data on the laptop, and on my backup external drive. Whew.)

... I did have to go back to the CD version of iTunes I had (6.0.4) instead of 6.0.5 that was on the laptop - is this the issue?
No, that shouldn't be the issue.
It sounds like your iTunes Library Files didn't get transferred over.
So assuming they were in their default location on your work computer ( C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes ) you want to move them to that same location on your new computer. Note that this will only work if your music files themselves were/are in the same location on both computers.

  • Adobe Lightroom on MacBook Pro does not see my iphoto library

Adobe Lightroom on MacBook Pro does not see my "iphoto library"

    Hello.
The problem is that the iPhoto library is inside of iPhoto. Lightroom won't let you select it because it's basically a shortcut to iPhoto. Try exporting the images you need or all of them, depending on what you need.

  • Lightroom does not see my iPhoto Library

Lightroom does not see my iPhoto Library

Unfortunately, importing from iPhoto to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is harder than it should be but there is an efficient solution.  The secret to creating a new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog from an existing iPhoto image library is to download and install the free-trial version of Photoshop Elements 12. This sounds completely bizarre, but Photoshop Lightroom lacks the ability to import directly from iPhoto and iPhoto lacks a merge with Lightroom feature. Although Lightroom cannot import images from your existing iPhoto library, Photoshop Elements 12 can!
Even the free-trial version of Photoshop Elements 12 has the ability to import from iPhoto and then Lightroom 5 can import from Elements. Photoshop Elements 12 is ironically the missing link for those looking to move their images from iPhoto into Lightroom.

  • IWeb does not see my iPhoto library

For some reason the iWeb media browser does not see my iPhot's. It does see my iTunes and iMovies. It says "open iPhoto 2 or above". I do. It still does not see them.
    I repaired permissions.
I deleted prefs (iPhoto and iWeb)
I know I can drag from iPhoto... but I would rather use it as intended.
    Any ideas?

I just upgrade to iLife6 and am also having the same problem. It keeps telling me to launch iPhoto 2 or later.
I've tried all the suggestions in this thread and still iLife nor desktop prefs will see my iPhoto library. I thought it might be because my library was in on an external drive, but creating a library in my pictures folder didn't work either.
I have no items in my Movies folder. I guess my next option is to re-create my library. Yuck! And see if there is something corrupt in there that I'm not seeing. I will hate to loose my albums though, but I guess it's worth it if it fixes the problem.
Oh yeah, another thing. I just realized that the desktop prefs never saw my library even when I was running iLife5. Not sure what is going on.
