macbook 2.26  running 10.6.8
appreciate any insight.

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • IPhoto- no option to "create new library"

    Hi all
When I try to import new photos into iPhoto I get the message that there is not enough space in my library to allow it.  I have searched for this issue alone on these message boards and have seen I need to check my memory (I have over 90gb free) and then to try "create new library" when opening with command and alt button, to see if there's any concerns in doing that.
My issue is that I don't have the option to "create new library." it is not there at all.  I have already tried rebuilding it from this option but I still get the not enough memory warning.
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks

To create a new Library you hold the option (or alt) key when launching, not the command and alt keys
However, ths message is bogus -  after all you have 90 gigs free - and usually implies a damaged database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • Unable to upload from iPhoto to FB after creating new library

Two days ago I exported all my photos/videos from iPhoto 09 to an EHD.  I created a new library - Library 2012 - and since have added about 50 photos and one 2-minute video.
I can click on "email" at the bottom of my iPhoto screen and successfully send images.
However, I cannot upload photos or videos to FB.  I start on my FB page, click "add photo/video".  In the good ole days, this took me to iPhoto and I could select my image.  Since creating Library 2012, I cannot access my library through any of the links that are on the screen that appears.  I've tried the following, all leading to a dead end:
Under Media > Photos:  Nothing populates the column to the right.
Under Places > Applications > iPhoto > "preview" of iPhoto populates column to the right.  Clicking it uploads the useless "preview"
Under Places > iPhoto Library 2012 > iPhoto Library 2012.  Clicking it uploads to the useless "preview"
(Note:  I had taken screenshots of the above, to better illustrate, but was unable to upload them to this forum as well.  Frustrating much?!)
I am just at my wits' end.  Any assistance will be appreciated.  TIA!

Thanks!  Apologies for the delay in reporting back - was off-line most of the weekend.
I just ran the repair permissions with Disk utility, as suggested.  A great number of permissions differed ... but, in the end, after it was completed and I re-booted, the same issue remains with iPhoto.
I'm now running "Permission Verify" just for the heck of it.

  • Create new Library still shows old Library names?

Old library was moved onto TCapsule. Create new Library does create
a new Library however all previous Library names are still there, (minus
    the photos)
I need the new Library to show 2009 - Currently shows 2000, '01, '02 etc.

Please describe the steps you used to get where you are now. From putting the old library into TM to creating the new one and what do you see and were do you see it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Importing photos from a PC and creating new library in iPhoto

I recently purchased a MacBook and I would like to transfer all of my photos from my external hard drive to the Mac. I had been using a PC prior to my MacBook purchase, so I am accustomed to organizing all of my pictures on my PC in one "My Pictures" folder with several subfolders within that large folder (e.g. "Landscape Photos," "Portraits," etc.):
    1. How should I transfer my photos onto the Mac? Do I copy and paste them into the "Pictures" folder, and then import them into iPhoto? If so, won't that create duplicate copies on my hard drive?
    2. I understand that going forward, when I upload pictures from my camera onto the computer (using iPhoto), the pictures will be uploaded into the "Original" folder, all lumped together with every picture that is uploaded. But for instance, if I upload a "landscape" photo, how do I put that in my "Landscape" folder, which is the same folder I was using to classify landscape pictures on my PC? Or does this "folder" classification now go away since iPhoto just organizes it?
    3. I use Photoshop to edit certain pictures. If I revise a picture, in which folder am I supposed to save it? Does it become a file "Modified" folder? How would I access this photo to print out at an external photo lab?
I would definitely appreciate any insight from anyone....thanks in advance for your help!!

Hello and welcome to the discussions!
Many of you 'switchers' are having problems with how iPhoto works, and how it differs from other programs you are used to with PCs. Most of you do all of your organizing yourself, but with iPhoto, you can just concentrate on working with your photos and being creative, letting iPhoto worry about what photo is in which folder. Here is an explanation of how iPhoto works: Using iPhoto, from iPhoto Help
iPhoto is designed to let your do all your arranging/naming/organizing into albums from WITHIN iPhoto itself. You should not be tinkering around in any of your iPhotoLibrary Folders outside of iPhoto: Don't Tamper
Another good explanation of iPhoto and how it works is in this thread
And, here is a discussion thread on migrating from Picasa to iPhoto: iPhoto structure
Be sure to read Terence's excellent explanation.
    Finally, for your questions:
(1)You should be able to get your photos into iPhoto by opening up iPhoto and dragging your photo folders into the main window of iPhoto. iPhoto will create a film roll for each folder. If the folder has subfolders, film rolls will be created for them also. By naming the folders when you import them, you will be able to keep the same organization in your film rolls. iPhoto automatically stores the photos in iPhotoLibrary folder in Pictures folder. You do not need to put them into Pictures yourself.
You need to learn about iPhoto's album system, where you create albums in the Source pane and selectively put your photos into them. These albums actually contain aliases of the photos, not the photos themselves, so a photo's alias can be placed into many albums, but the photo can be in only one film roll.
    (2) If you don't want your photos downloaded from your camera in a lump sum, use ImageCapture (in Applications) to selectively download your photos into separate folders on your desktop, and then import each folder into iPhoto where each folder becomes a separate film roll. You can either keep the original downloaded photos on your computer, or you can delete the downloaded folders after you have imported the photos into iPhoto.
    (3) You can set your 'Edit' preferences in iPhoto to open up PhotoShop for all editing, and you save the photo back to iPhoto afterwards. It will be in the same film roll.
Post back if you have more questions.

  • I tried to create new library, now iPhoto can't find them

i had so many photos in my iphoto library and it was taking forever to load up, so i wanted to create multiple libraries.
i first tried the following protocol from the help but couldn't find the 'Create Library' command in the toolbar.
    1.Quit iPhoto.
2.Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk.
    3.Open iPhoto.
    4.Click Create Library.
5.Type a name and choose a location for your new photo library.
    6.Click Save.
then i manually tried to rename my original iPhoto Library file in the Pictures folder, and create a new folder where i dropped all the photos from 2006 and 2007 so i could just boot from my recent photos. i've learned since that tinkering with files manually in the iPhoto Library is a no-no, but how do i go back? i moved all of the folders with year names 2002-2007 back under the folder iPhoto Library, but i now have two folders. one called iPhoto Library and the other iPhoto Library 2. they are both within the Pictures folder and they each have copies dir.data, iphoto.db, iphoto.ipspot, iphotolock.data, etc.
    Help! please!
    thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If iPhoto does not recognize either library, then the data files may be messed up. I would create a new library and import the photos from the old library. This will get you back in the running.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "import" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto not showing RAW pics, and crashing on Create New Library

    hi there
i was just organising (tagging, deleting) pics in iPhoto 9.1 when the RAW pics started showing up as just blank placeholders - i'll clarify that:  they were showing previously, however my perception of them 'disappearing' may have been between iPhoto sessions.
my iPhoto library is mostly JPEGs, with the RAW pics being a recent addition courtesy of a Canon EOS 5D MkII.  the iPhoto library resides on a 500GB external harddrive.  the iPhoto library was backed up by way of copying the entire iPhoto folder from the 500GB external harddrive to a separate 1TB external harddrive - this back-up process was done prior to the addition of more recent RAW pics, and the memory card from which all the RAW pics came from has been wiped several times since.  some RAW pics taken in December 2011 are showing; none of the RAW pics taken in January 2012 are showing.
    what i've done so far:
    1.  Option-Command-opened iPhoto and ticked all boxes to rebuild the library and the RAW pics are still not showing.  this rebuild process has been done at least three times now.
    2.  opened the iPhoto Library (via Show Package Contents) and confirmed that the pic files are still there in the Masters folder.  (they are identified by the date the photos were taken, the CR2, and can be viewed in Preview.)
    3.  installed the iPhoto 9.2.1 Update and the RAW Camera Update 3.9, with no change in the RAW pics' visibility.
    4.  Option-opened iPhoto and -
      a.  - created a new library (on the 1TB external HD, separate to the 'backup') into which i -
      b.  - tried to import the entire iPhoto Library from the 500GB external HD but -
      c.   this import ended in an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" message.  unfortunately, i did not keep the error report for this.
    5.  Option-Command-opened iPhoto to create a new library on the 1TB HD but this has ended abruptly in an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" message.  this has happened twice, and i have kept one of the error reports.
    6.  downloaded and installed the latest iPhoto Library Manager and -
      a.  - tried to Rebuild the library but -
      b.  - iPhoto quit unexpectedly - i have kept this error report - while -
      c.  - iPhoto Library Manager gave the error message "'iPLM'/'ADDK' (returnID 3)".
interspersed with the above steps, i have run Disk Utility Repair Permissions after each crash.
    so.
i know the files are still there.  but iPhoto won't show them.  i've trawled these forums and done - or tried doing - some of the fixes, all to no avail.
    please can someone help.

  • Created new library- now trying to import pictures

    I have a G4 Mac running 10.4.6 with iPhoto 6 (latest version).
I have created a new library. In the default library I created a folder with the pictures that I want to import into the new library, Trips out west. The new folder in the default library is titled the same. I have 685 pictures in it. When I go to my newly created library--->Import--->I do not see that particular folder in my iPhoto Library. Why not? I originally started out creating it as a Smart Folder thinking that as I add photos to it with the keyword, Vacations out west, photos would automatically go into that folder. Well, I couldn't 'see' the Smart Folder so that is when I just created a plain, ol' folder which I can't seem to find either when I want to import. Maybe there is a simple answer to this problem, maybe it can't be done but maybe someone can tell me the best way to organize my iPhoto Library. I have iPhoto Buddy but I thought if I could use the built in features of iPhoto itself, that would be great. Thanks! Judy

    mrstee:
You don't want to use the File Import menu on your old library folder. That will also import all of the thumbnail files and really mess up your new library. I recommend you use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge the old library into the new one. This will preserve any keywords, comments, rolls, albums, etc. that are in the old library.
Do not put any photos into the iPhoto library folder via the Finder.Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. In order to import photos they must be outside the iPhoto LIbrary folder. So move them to the desktop and just drag that folder of pictures into the open iPhoto window. But don't drag a whole iPhoto library folder as it will do the same as I mentioned above.
    Do you Twango?

  • IPhoto 08 exclamation points due to referenced photos.  Have reverted back to Managed, trashed problem images, and want to rebuild library or create new library.  However, Originals folder contains aliases of deleted images.

    1. Will broken images in Originals folder hinder making a backup copy, rebuild, or other attempts at repair?  I have Time Machine, never used it, and don't know when when iPhoto became referenced library (due to bad advice)  2. Is it OK to delete broken aliases from the Originals folder (white squares with arrows, jpeg tags, and a Quicktime logo)?  3. Would it make sense to select undamaged images in the Orginals folder for copying to a new library?  I am cleaning up Events and exporting healthy photos from iPhoto before trying to copy the entire iphoto library folder.  Thanks for your help.

What do you mean by "broken images"?
Never delete anything from the Originals folder, ever.
    Try
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Import playlist to create new library - Possible?

My daughter and I sync two iPods off one computer. Here are the instructions on how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
We are currently using Method 2: ie, her ipod syncs to a certain playlist. Now she wants to set up her own separate library: ie, switch to Method 3. (Which will allow her to have her own playlists on her iPod.)
I have successfully created the new library. Now my question: Is there some way of importing her playlist into the new library? In other words, can I make it so that "Maggie's playlist" becomes "Maggie's library?"
The alternative, of course, will be for her to find her music in iTunes music and manually drag it into her new library. That's not a terrible option, as it's only a 4G Nano! Just wondering if there's an easier way...any info appreciated.

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your daughter's iPod and put them into a new library. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
One last thing though, since the Nano is currently syncing with another library you need to change that before connecting to the new blank one. The safest thing to do would be to change it to manual update so that the songs on it aren't erased when you connect to the blank library. You can return it to auto-syncing when you have everything transferred: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

  • Forced to create new library

I have spent hours creating a slideshow in iPhoto.  Today when attempting to open iPhoto it would not allow me to choose iPhoto library.  It was showing but would not allow me to select.  Left with the option "create new photo library" which I did.  It imported all my photos but not any folders or slideshow.  Please help me.  I am a new mac user.  I had not done any updates.  I have since updated iPhoto to no avail. Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5  OSX 10.9.5

What version of iPhoto? You should now have two iPhoto libraries - the one that would not open and the new one - is this correct?  Assuming this is the case backup your iphoto library and hold down the option and command keys - double click on the old iphoto library that would not open and keep the keys down until the first andow appears - rebuid your database

  • Create new library

How do I create a new iphoto library? I have 314 photos in iphoto and I can't find their origin. I have 10,500 in my originals folder that I need to put into a new library.

Never mind. I didn't find old library but did create a new one.

  • Create new library from part of existing

I just starting using iPhoto and have created a library with all my photos of 2004-2005. I also have a large collection of old family photos I've been building up (from the 20's, 30's and 40's) and want to create a separate library just for this project.
How can I take old photos and create a new library then remove them from my current library?
I don't want to lose the keywords and comments that have been assigned to the photos thus far.
    Thanks!!

    Lori,
Thanks for your response. I get how to create and navigate multiple libraries. I'm just wondering if there are easy ways to move images between libraries and maintain all the meta data such as keywords, descriptions, dates, etc.
Trying to understand the dynamics to get my storage scheme in place. I can't keep everything on my laptop forever. Looking to establish a migratory path.
I shoot about 1500 pictures per year, 2500 on years where I've done the big Europe/Asia trips. So far I have one library with years 2004 and 2005 and starting to add 2006 as I go. About 3000 images. I have 1999-2003 that I am thinking about starting a new library with or adding to the current. Although at some point, I'll want to migrate older stuff to an external drive while keeping active stuff on the laptop.
Hence, can I move images from one library to another and keep keywords/comments, etc.
    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Creating new library...Questions..?

Just backed up my whole hard drive using Super Duper.
I went into my internal hard drive, backed all of my photos to dvd. So now I have them all on the external drive, AND backed up to DVD.
When this was done, I opened iPhoto, went to the Library folder on top, selected all pictures in the library folder and moved them to the trash. I then emptied the trash.
I would now like to create a new library so that when I back up my HD again, I do not over-write my existing library on my external HD.....Follow?
I think I read a few posts on this, but, of course, cannot find them now that I need them.
I would like to continue to add pictures to my computer into iPhoto, and back them up every 6 months.....What is the easiest way to do this? I stress do NOT want to overwrite the current library on my external HD.......Thanks for any help you can provide!! Love my Mac!

After I click Apple HD, pictures, I get all sorts of albums, years, folders, etc.....
That is where all of this mess started to begin with. I had tried to delete my photos from there a few months ago, and was using the apple "command" key to select more than one photo.....as I dragged them to the trash, I dropped them into another folder, and they all became re-arranged.....
I know, when I mess it up, I mess it up big time....!
Is there a way to erase the contents out of the pictures icon, and re-install iPhoto, or at least put the items back into the same position they were before I messed with them?
iPhoto still opens up with my "new" library of pictures, (I only have 33 pictures in the new folder) and works fine. It's just knowing that the folders, pictures, years are all messed up is killing me.
Thank You for all of your time in helping me get this fixed. I really appreciate it. I promise I will not move stuff around again!!!!
