IPhoto back up and avail space?

If I back up iPhoto to my external drive, can I delete photos from iPhoto on my main hard drive to free up space?  Will my pics on the external drive be retrievable and how?  If they try to re-load into iPhoto everytime it will defeat the purpose as I have more photos/videos than space.  Basically I'm just low on iPhoto space and looking for solutions to easily access pics while freeing up space.

A back up is a copy. That is, the data exists in two places - at least. If the library is only on your external, and the external goes down, what do you do?
I have multiple back ups and two HDs permanently connected to my iMac.
I'm wondering if I should just back up iPhoto pics/videos to external drive and then delete all videos from my main iPhoto on the computer to free up room
Here's one way to do that
1. Quit iPhoto.
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
A couple of comments:
a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager
But remember, now the material on the External is not a back up, and needs to be backed up

  • Question: Inconsistency in Icloud between total and available spaces.

    Dear all,
    First of all, thank you for read this topic and please kindly give me information or advise if you can.
    Right now, my Iphone 4s was reset accidentally and all data were gone without any backup in Itune but I thought I have backup some in Icloud. After it was reset, I tried to restore with Icloud but nothing was found. Then, I came back to check space in Icloud (setting > Icloud > storage & Backup) and found that total space is 5.0 GB but available space is 355 MB, meaning that space around 4 GB are used for backing up something. So, this point is so strange. Icloud said nothing was backed up but my Icloud space has been used for 4GB.
    Could anyone advise for data backing up and answer this problem for me?
    Also, please kindly let me know how can I get storage 4GB back.
    Thank youso much in advance,
    Yong

  • Hard Drive Capacity Issue -- 51 GBs missing btwn utilized and avail space

    I have a 200MB internal hard drive.
    My SYSTEM PROFILER states:
    Capacity=185.99GB (which I understand due to system use, etc)
    Available= 26.25 GB (odd)
    This available space reading seemed odd as I don't have much data on the HD (transferred files using Migration Assistant from a 80gb, 1.67ghz older G4 laptop).
    So I went to the ACTIVITY MONITOR and looked at DISK USAGE at it states:
    Space Utilized= 99.14 GB
    Space Free= 25.85 GB
    With a total of 124.99 GB between the two (the adjacent pie chart total)
    MY QUESTION: If I have a HD with a capacity of 185.99 GB, with only 99.14 GB utilized, why is the space free missing 51 GBs? Where did this memory space go?
    Note: I have never partitioned the Hard Drive or created any sort of RAM Disk.
    Anyone? Please help.

    UPDATE BUT STILL NO ANSWER:
    Ran DISK UTILITY which fixed some minor errors and how states "Volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK"
    But the issue remains - I have a 200GB hard drive but the data at the bottom of this utility reads:
    Capacity : 186.0 GB (199,705,673,728 Bytes)
    Available : 26.3 GB (28,291,375,104 Bytes)
    Used : 98.6 GB (105,916,047,360 Bytes)
    Number of Folders: 173,085
    Number of Files: 886,070
    HOW CAN I ONLY HAVE 26.3GB available when I have only used 98.6GB of 186GB = Should be a 87.4 GB balance available, not 26.3 GB, right????????
    What is the deal here? Is this related to MobileMe or iPhone issue maybe?
    The hardware start-up test and disk utility test are all clean. Someone? Anyone?
    Thanks!

    Can I take all the Apple Loops and Live Type samples and templates and burn them onto a DVD and use them off of that when working in Final Cut? That would save a lot of space on my Powerbook.

    [email protected]

    You could do this, although if working with them in an actual project you are best copying to you hard drive. You can off course just copy the ones you need. The read speed from optical media is a bit too slow.
    Alternatively install all of them on an external drive.

  • IPhone/Edge security and available space question

    2 questions here:
    1) Is it 'safe' to access sites like online banking or enter credit card information using the iphone/edge, or is it not really secure? As a side-question, is it more or less secure to do the same using iphone/wifi?
    2) I have about 45MB free on my iphone (according to itunes). Does this number include ALL space on the iphone (meaning if I fill that up, it won't have any room to cache data/download email, etc..) or does it have a portion of the drive partitioned off for its own uses? Should I be worrying about keeping some free space or will it do it on its own?

    1. Safe is a relative term. If someone is snooping they may intercept your transmission. Same thing with WiFi. When you connect to banking sites, you are establishing secure connections, and some have better security than others. But even with a hard connection, someone can have a sniffer hooked up to a port somewhere down the line and intercept your transmission. Bottom line - I connect to these sites and dont worry about it too much.
    2. 45MB??? Where did all your space go??? There is a space allotted for the system, but as an old-schooler I have never "used up" all my storage - it tends to cause problems. I am pretty sure the system will alert you if you fill up beyond capacity or if you will hinder its operation. It a pretty smart phone. I would not fill it to capacity though. Its just an old habit I have.

  • My MacBook is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and I have 2 GB of memory and 80  GB of available space, but I still cannot download Yosemite?  Any tips?

    I have tried to download Yosemite, I've checked my software, memory and available space, and I keep getting the message that it won't download on my computer.

    Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion and newer:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
    A Mac older than those listed which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by clicking here. Neither Yosemite nor Lion support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

  • Available space incorrect

    My 30gb iPod is reporting the capacity and available space at 27.8gb. I currently have 2172 songs on my iPod. iTunes reports the available space at approx 13.5gb. I recently applied the latest updater to my iPod with hopes that this would correct the problem. It did not. I have also restored my iPod back to factory defaults and resynched my library using iTunes.
    How do I correct this? It sure would be nice to see how much capacity I have left without having to dock my iPod.
    Thanks to anyone who can help.

    No, the ipod will not display how much
    remaining memory is on your ipod.
    Yes, it does.
    The available space number is not use for check
    how much remaining space you have.
    Yes, it is.
    My numbers always stay the same:
    Capacity 55.6 GB
    Available 55.5 GB

  • Find available space in buffer cache

    Hi.
    I want to find available space from buffer cache. First thought was to make it 8i-9i comp, by not using v$bh to calculate sum of memory and available space.
    I have the following pl/sql block to calculate the values:
    declare
    num_free_blck integer;
    num_all_blck integer;
    num_used_blck integer;
    overal_cache number := 0;
    used_cache number := 0;
    free_cache number := 0;
    blck_size integer;
    pct_free number := 0;
    begin
    select count(1) into num_free_blck from v$bh where status='free';
    select count(1) into num_all_blck from v$bh;
    select count(1) into num_used_blck from v$bh where status <> 'free';
    select value into blck_size from v$parameter where name ='db_block_size';
    used_cache := (blck_size * num_used_blck)/(1024*1024);
    free_cache := (blck_size * num_free_blck)/(1024*1024);
    overal_cache := (blck_size * num_all_blck)/(1024*1024);
    pct_free := ((free_cache/overal_cache)*100);
    dbms_output.put_line('There are '||num_free_blck||' free blocks in buffer cache');
    dbms_output.put_line('There are '||num_used_blck||' used block in buffer cache');
    dbms_output.put_line('There are totally '||num_all_blck||' blocks in buffer cache');
    dbms_output.put_line('Overall cache size is '||to_char(overal_cache,'999.9')|| 'mb');

    dbms_output.put_line('Percent free db_cache is '||to_char(pct_free,'99.9')||' %');
    end;
    The result of the execution is:

    There are totally 8008 blocks in buffer cache

    Provided the OP figures out that xx_bh is probably a view defined by sys on top of x$bh this will get him the number of free buffers - which may be what he wants - but apart from that your query is at least 10 years short of complete, and the decode() of state 3 is definitley wrong.
    The decode of x$bh.state for 10g is:

              9,'memory',
              10,'mwrite',

         ), and for 11g it is:
         decode(state,

  • RAID 5 - available space?

    Hi all,
    I just got a Mac Pro with four 2TB drives and migrated them to a RAID 5 setup. In the RAID utility, it says that the total available space would be 5.23 TB, which sounds right given the research I've done about RAID 5 setups and available space. However, on my desktop, it shows the Macintosh HD as a RAID icon, and when I click to get info it says only 2TB as total space, as opposed to 5.23TB.
    Where do the other 3+ TB show up? Am I missing something?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Incorrect Available Space Value

    On the desktop, i have my Macintosh HD, and underneath, i have the amount of total disk space and amount of available disk space - this is seperated by '...'. The amount of total disk space is correct, 148.73GB, but the amount of space left is incorrect - .01GB (this is shown on the desktop). When i click get info, it says that i have 129.63GB available.
    How do i correct this - make it show the correct values on my desktop.
    PS - when i insert my flash drive, it has the correct amount of total and available space, just not the HD.

    sorry, i know what was wrong, there wasnt enough room to display all the space (available and total), so it just covered the amount of space with '...'. it was displaying the right information, just covering it.

  • HT1688 I did a back up and now trying to do the restore and it KEEPS saying there not enough space - I've deleted all kinds of things but it still keeps saying that.  It shows more space available than what is actually used.

  • HT4623 I am unable to download the latest iOS 6.0.1 software to my iphone because there is not enough available space.  I try to sync my phone to itunes and says it doesn't recognize the device and to reset the iphone using Settings on the iphone.  Help?

    Here is my problem:
    I'm unable to download the latest software iOS 6.0.1 to my iphone 4 because there is not enough available space.  I tried to sync my iphone to itunes and it says, "itunes cannot read the contents of this iPhone.  Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings."
    I backed up my data to icloud to ensure everything is backed up.  Is there a way to verify if data was really backed up in icloud?
    What else can I do in order to free up enough space to download the newest version iOS 6.0.1?  Current version on the iphone is 5.1.1 and there is only 1.6 GB of space remaining.  I need 2.5 to download the software.

    I'm trying to install Mavericks and got this message: You need 4.94 GB of available space to download OS X Mavericks. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space. How do I do this?

    With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
    If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
    Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
    Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
    If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
    If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
    If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
    Look though other Apple Mail folders like the junk mail and delete the mail that is in there. Look through your sent items folders and see there is any mail in there that can be deieted.
    Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
    Other things you can do to gain space.
    Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
    This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
    STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
    Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
    Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
    Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
    Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
    Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
    move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!
