Iphoto crashing the system on Mac OSX 10.8.5
Hello there,
since I updated my MacBook Pro from 10.6.8 to OSX 10.8.5, iPhoto brings down my whole system. Starting iPhoto causes the MacBook to crash. Someimes, I can start iPhoto and the crash will occur after a few minutes...very irregular.
Maybe someone can give me a hint...
Thanks in advance,
philoTon

Hi Old Toad,
thanks again for the quick reply!
Alright, I did the following:
- I used the user account "guest" and logged into it. Then I opend iPhoto there and worked with it for a while: No problems (although I did´nt work with it for hours, but not one crash!)
That means obviously that the problem is based in my "admin" account somwhere and not a system problem...
- I downloaded Etrecheck and I did let it run over my system. I posted the result down below...
- I do not know how to reinstall iPhoto (and only iPhoto) Is there a function "reinstall" or are there downloadable versions? Thanks in advance for clearing that up for me...
- I don´t think I have thrid party RAM installed: Two times 4GB in the unibody MacBook Pro...
And of course thank you for your continuing help on this matter!
All the best
piloTon

I have two iPhoto librariries
1st one is quite heavy( around 13 gb)
Whenever I open this library(13gb) the os crashes
The only thing which works as is
1.open another desktop
2.open activity monitor
3.force quit the iPhoto
I am very upset for my photos
This problem is since I upgraded to mt lion and latest iPhoto
Currently I am using MacBook Pro 13" dual i5,os x mt lion,iPhoto 11
Kindly help
I'll be highly thankful to you13 gigs is not a lot for an iPhoto Library.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

OpenLDAP Server have Problems with the automounter of Mac OSX 10.5.5 client
Hi,
we are using OpenLDAP Server on a Debian OS base. I had connect the LDAP Server with the MACMini with Mac OSX 10.5.5. The LDAP Server is based on OpenLDAP running on Debian Linux.
The Users can login on the Mac Computers and they do have the right goups. I have a problem with the autompunterMaps because the homes and volumes are not mounted in the Mac environment. So the users have a different home directory at each computer and no volumes to work with.
The LDIF I use for the automounter is following:

I updated imovie, which is now totally different. I tried to import videos from iphotos, but the system is now stuck on "import" and it doesn't include iphotos. Clicking on "close" doesn't work. How do I get out of "import" and then how do I access iphoto?
I have asked a moderator to provide assistance, they will post an invite on this thread.

Cannot go to the Internet from Mac OSX, and Fedora Core 5
All Windows users (XP, 2000, Vista Beta) can connect to the Internet no problem on WRT54G with Firmware v4.20.6 (may 26, 2005). But odd enough, though getting the right DHCP assigned IP addresses and DNS server address, MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.1) and Fedora Core 5 cannot go to the internet at all using Safari and firefox browsers: the message keeps saying that your computer is not connected to the internet. Tested with BOTH wired and wireless connections, no luck to the internet. So, it's not about the wireless settings and setup. It doesn't work even if I directly connect the CAT5 cable to the router port.
Tested at wireless hotspots, at work where we have Cisco access points, and at a friend's place where there is netgear wireless router, MacBookPro is just working fine connected to the internet.
Any suggestions? Linksys doesn't support Mac and Linux PCs at all?Thank you very much All (devildance, and Frank).
Seems like it is working fine now...
I reset the router as factory default, and reconfig the wireless setting(disable broadcasting SSID, configure TKIP PSK, and MAC filtering). Directly connected CAT5 cable from the router to my MacBookPro Windows XP. Working fine. Switched to Mac OSX, working fine. But, when I disconnected the LAN, and attempted to connect wireless, I couldn't go to the Internet using Safari and Firefox: keeps saying that your computer is not connected to the Internet.
Still could ping to 4.2.2.2 and 207.232.22.25, but getting errors "could not resolve the host name" when I pinged with the hostname bearshare.com.
Connected the wired CAT5. Working fine. Unplugged and used the wireless, could not get to the internet.
Checked the NICs settings on both LAN ethernet and wireless airport. All seems the same and correct: IP address, subnetmask and gateway address, and NO DNS entry. The same settings, but works on LAN cat5, and not works with wireless. So, for the sake of it, just manually added the DNS server IP addresses and domain names on wireless NIC. And Wala...it is working fine with wireless. Still strange the fact that Ethernet LAN NIC still doesn't have any DNS entries and working fine, but required DNS entries on wireless NIC.
For Fedora Core, could ping and resolve names without changing any settings. But when going to the Internet, got the error saying "comcast doesn't support this platform/OS" and another error "Welcome to Comcast High speed Internet....registration currently unavailable" when attempting to go any websites. Notieced that we pinging cnn.com, bearshare.com, or any websites, got ping reply from the same IP address which appears to be one of the comcast DNS server IP, 68.87.64.132.
So, I think it is a comcast issue not supporting Linux or something else which I would need to call to Comcast about...
But, thanks...looks like I can go to the Internet on Mac OSX, and Fedora core now with Linksys WRT54G. Thanks so much guys for all the suggestions.... -

Mkfs.ntfs crashes the system
Hi all,
Here I am again with a weird kernel & swap bugs! But I'm pretty sure the kernel itself is okay, so newbie corner it is.
Here the problem: Doing this (/dev/sdb is a 16 GB USB key I want to format)
% sudo mkfs.ntfs /dev/sdb1
Cluster size has been automatically set to 4096 bytes.
Initializing device with zeroes: 2%^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C^C
Crashes my system in 30 seconds. As soon as I type the command, the computer gets extremely laggy, cursor barely reacts to mouse movement, can't ^C the command, few seconds later X is completely locked up and I switch to another terminal. Shortly after logging in, I lost acces to the terminal as well (too laggy), so I just unplugged the USB key, very bad idea from me:

I disabled swap and now I'm able to mkfs, ntfs, but it takes the whole available RAM (-/+ buffers is 1963MB). I'm typing this and this is the only tab I can open, if I dare try to open anything else system goes unstable (random app freezes like xfce4-panel, comes back if I close something else).
TL;DR: Question: Why does mkfs.ntfs crashes the system? How can I prevent it from doing that?I don't know if this helps, here's more dmesg:

It does seem to use usb-storage as expected. I will try to find my other drive I lost somewhere on my desk and see if it does the same, I don't remember having my other drive going crazy like that.
It also seems like dd works fine on it (probably flushes the buffer on every write), I'll keep testing on my side... -

Why does firefox 7 crashes the system if Quadro NVS 135M graphics driver is installed?
Why does firefox 7 crashes the system with a Quadro NVS 135M graphics cards installed?
It happens immediately after opening Firefox on a two screen system. You get a message saying the Graphics Driver stopped responding, but that it managed to recover, but after a while the system freezes completely. You can't even CTRL+ALT+DEL.I get this too on with my nVidia GTX460 card. In my case the screen goes black. It happens once every few days, and for a while I could not figure out why. I was forcing a shutdown to get the screen back.
But I put the computer to sleep and woke it up, since that restarts the video, and this let me see what was wrong. The only error message is it reports that Firefox hung. There is nothing else in the Event logs.
I'm running Windows 7 with all the updates from Windows Update, and my video driver is 285.62, but his also happened with the 260.26 driver.
I imagine this is happening a lot, but people aren't able to isolate the cause.
I'm looking for a fix, not a bypass. -
Mac OSX 10.5.8 is a PowerPC computer. Your info says it should support a Firefox browser & I REALLY want one since I always liked Firefox better than Safari, but I get the message saying that my system doesn't support Firefox.
I'd be happy to purchase a disc in order to load the Firefox software. Thanks.Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do NOT have; yours is a PPC Mac) '''''<u>and</u>''''' OSX 10.5 or higher

The good news is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. The bad news is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

You can try the third-party product '''''TenFourFox''''' that supports PPC Macs. Firefox 8 version of '''''TenFourFox''''' is available. The product is based on Firefox released versions. All support is provided by the developer, not by this site:

IPhoto 4.0.3 vs Mac OSX 10.4.7 Problem?
Since I've installed 10.4.7, I cannot import any new photos into my iPhoto Photo Library. Even putting several photos onto a HD, then importing just one into iPhoto causes iPhoto to crash, w/o any error message!
There is plenty of free space (many gigabytes) in the HD for the Photo Library.
Any ideas?
G4 800MHz Quicksilver 2002 Mac OS X (10.4.7)OK, Problem solved! When deleting the iPhoto Preference file, iPhoto lost the connection to its Photo Library, since it is on another, larger HD. While getting it back, I discovered that, updating to OSX 10.4.7 must have reset the permissions on this HD, so I could read, but not write to it. But iPhoto insisted on repeatedly trying to write to it, without any message as to what the problem was, until it finally quit, without leaving any message as to why.
Changing the permission on this second HD from Read Only to Read/Write, fixed the problem.
