Iphoto dates all wrong

Question

I have iphoto version 5.04 and digital cameras Nikon D2H and Olympus C-50 Zoom. I have made sure both of these cameras have the correct date on them. However, whenever I import pictures, the date for my library, any folder I make and every single picture is 19/08/05. I don't seem able to change that date on anything. I have gone to the little calendar icon on the bottom left of the screen and if I click on a particular month and day, it will show pictures that were taken at that time. So somewhere it does recall the correct information about when the picture was taken, but I can't get that information to appear in the left bottom corner information box or when I click on the Get Info button. I have been told before that you can just change the date in that bottom corner box, but whenever I try the machine makes a noise at me and just returns to the original date of 19/08/05. It is really getting annoying- please can anybody suggest a fix for this problem. And please, if the fix is complicated, spell it out to me because I'm not particularly computer literate
