IPhoto folders vs albums

Some iPhoto tutorials show how to first create a folders, and then create albums in these folders.
Why do you need folders. Can you simply create albums of photos??

Actually the question is totally in the context of using iPhoto
iPhoto folders vs albums
His later comment is trying to understand how iPhoeo works - and yoru suggestion is not at all helpful and as I pointed out may lead to an inexperianced user destroying their iPhoto library
Your answer is confusing and dangerous
the answer for using iPhoto as the OP requested is
That is NOT using iPhoto and at best has no effect on iPhoto and at worst would lead one to move photos around within the iPhoto library thereby destroying their library
The correct answer is that in iPhtoo (the context of the question) folders simply can not hold photos - you make albums of photos and then make folder to hold albums for organization
Arguing and posting poor, misleading or incorrect suggestions is really not a good idea and helps no one

  • Importing iPhoto `11 Library Lost Folders & Nested Albums

Been using iPhoto since its' inception. Currently at iPhoto `11. Had created many Albums and Smart Albums based on Keywords and had most of them organized into Folders in iPhoto.
Just bought Aperture 3 and, following the video tutorial provided by Apple, imported my 9,000+ iPhoto Library into it. However, only albums that resided at the top level in the sidebar of iPhoto made it into Aperture. All Folders and any Albums and Smart Albums that resided inside those Folders were not imported into Aperture.
I have verified that all photos contained within the missing Folders and Albums have made it into Aperture, just not the Folder and Album hierarchies I had created over the years.
Do I need to delete the Aperture Library and re-import the iPhoto Library again using other settings?

Thanks for the reply Terrence. I'm still a bit confused by some contradictory behavior of Aperture.
    The Aperture Manual states (p.112):
+"The organization of your iPhoto images and albums is maintained as projects in the Projects panel."+
Well, not actually. Only EVENTS seem to be maintained as Projects when imported from iPhoto. My iPhoto library contains 1189 Events. Aperture now has 1185 Projects after the iPhoto import. But Projects does not contain any of the album organization that had been created in iPhoto.
The Aperture Manual further states (p.112):
"+You cannot import slideshows, books, and Smart Albums from your iPhoto Library."+
Well, actually, Aperture DID import 5 of my Smart Albums. But these were only the Smart Albums at the top level of iPhoto's sidebar. All other Smart Albums nested inside folders in iPhotos sidebar were not brought over.
    So I'm confused.

  • How do I move folders and albums in iPhoto on my MacBook Pro to my ipad?

How do I move folders and albums in iPhoto on my MacBook Pro to a new iPad Air?

To sync photos, connect your iPad to your Mac and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo albums/folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page.
You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

  • Iphoto events vs albums

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created. I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...

If photos are deleted from events will they remain in the albums I created.
    No.
iPhoto works on a similar Library based principle to iTunes. Every Photo is in the Library, each Album (like a playlist in iTunes) is a subset of the Library.
Events are the Library. They broadly correspond to the actual folders on the HD that contain the pics. Trash a pic from an Album, you remove it from the Album, but it's still in the Library. Trash a pic from an Event and it's gone from the Library and all the albums too.
I copied and pasted the pics from events into albums, and now want to delete the events so we don't have duplicates...
First off: don't copy and paste. Drag and drop is more reliable way to move photos around in the iPhoto Window.
Second: There are no duplicates. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A pic can be in 50 Albums with no duplication required, no extra disk space used. A photo in more than one Event requires a duplicate.
    For the benefit of nequetech
    This is not true:
Events in iPhoto are actually Albums.
    This is incorrect:
    They mean the same thing,
    As is this:
    unless you have older versions.
    This
If you were to delete the duplicates, I suggest you drag every picture from one event to a folder in your desktop.
is data destructive. You only get the current version of your photo, not the Original, you lose a lot of metadata as well.
This may be your preferred way to deal with duplicates, but Duplicate Annihilator is at least non-destructive - and I'm not at all sure that the OP actually has a duplicates issue at all.

  • Organizing Photos in Folders or Albums

    Hello
I have hundreds of high res photos from a film project, and I'd like to organize them for easy viewing.
As I understand the way iPhoto works, it is basically taking/referring to actual images from their original source. (like an external drive).
    I'd like to know the best way to bring all of these photos into iPhoto;
Do I need to import ALL of then into the Main iPhoto Library, or can I import them into separate folders or albums? I was led to believe that in order to put them into separate folders, they all need to appear in the Main Library first? Is that right?
And what type of sub group do I need? Separate Folders? Or Separate Albums?
What is the basic difference between them?
    Thank you
    Mike

    Mike
it is basically taking/referring to actual images from their original source. (like an external drive).
No, actually by default it's quite the opposite. It prefers to copy the files into the iPhoto Library Folder and manage them. You can change this setting, but I do not recommend it. Very strongly. However, you can run an entire library from an external, so if you're worried about space, that's not a problem.
Do I need to import ALL of then into the Main iPhoto Library,
iPhoto uses exactly the same metaphor as iTunes: All pics are in the Library, albums are subsets of the library. Albums (like iTunes playlists) are virtual. A pic can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums with no disk space wasted through duplicate files.
So, import the pic, they go in the library. Then create albums (File -> New Album) and drag the pics to the albums in whatever way you prefer. You can also tag the pics and create Smart Albums in a variety of ways.
If your files are already sorted into folders, then drag a folder to the Source (or left-hand) pane and iPhoto will import and create an Album of the same name as the folder.
File -> New Folder will allow you to create Folders. Folders can contain nested folders and albums, but not loose pics. A pic must be in an album to go into a folder.

  • Organizing for stock library. Projects, folders or albums?

This may have been talked about to death, but I cannot find a thread that fits my question.
I have a growing library of images in Aperture. I am also a stock photographer by living. My library in Aperture is somewhat haphazard and I'm trying to organize it so that I can have it make sense. I do not sell my photos as stock myself (I submit to several agencies) so I'm not sure that I need to file my images so that I can get to them if a client needs a shot. That's what the agencies are for.
My work flow is something like this:
    1 - shoot pix
2 - import and edit (read: delete) images in Aperture
3 - prepare and submit images to agencies
    4 - next....
I do find myself taking pix of many of the same subjects, so I do want to organize them in Aperture.
My main question is, what is the best, or most efficient, way to organize major subjects in the library, with Projects, Folders, or Albums?
For instance, I shoot a production with models. That could be a project titled " August 14 production." When the submission is done, i could archive the entire project to save space. But, suppose I want to keep some around to submit to a different agency. Is a project the best way to store this?
Also, I find myself shooting a lot of NYC landmarks. Should each landmark be in its own project, or have it be an album in a project called NYC, or should it be a project in a folder called NYC?
I'm really not sure what the most efficient filing method is for my business.
Any discussion and/or advice is GREATLY APPRECIATED!
    Antonio

n attempting to relocate a folder it did not end up where intended and I cannot find it.
I hope you are referring to doing the relocation from within iPhoto and not in the Finder and the library package. Any moving, renaming of files and/or folder inside the iPhoto Library Package while in the Finder is tantamount to the cardinal sin of iPhoto, Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. That will mess up your library to where you may have to start over with a new library.
Can you describe where these folders and albums were located when you were moving them?
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Copying iPhoto folders to CD for TV viewing

I'm looking for a way to copy 6 mos. worth of iPhoto folders with jpegs and TITLES to a CD that I can play for TV viewing. The real problem is getting the folders with titles out of iPhoto in jpeg form so they are catalogued. Any suggestions?

The tip refers to the file "Library6.iPhoto" that is in the iPhoto Library folder. That's the file that often gets damaged or corrupted and makes iPhoto think there are no photos in the library or that the files are missing but the thumbnails are there. I just select it and type Command-D to make a copy of it which ends up as "Library6 copy 1.iPhoto". When I need to backup again I delete that file and make another copy of it.
For protection of HD problems and really losing your files I suggest an external Firewire HD. An 80G drive is not that expensive and can hold your iPhoto Library folder and, in general, your entire User folder. That folder contains all of your important, non-replaceable files. The system and applications can be replace
That being said DVDs can be used with iPhoto's Share->Burn Disk menu option to burn multiple rolls to disk in the iPhoto format. This will allow you to mount that disk in iPhoto like this to copy back those rolls into a new library is that were necessary. As you get a number of new rolls you can burn another disk. Or use a CD and burn fewer rolls as they are added. That preserves the keywords, albums they were in, comments, etc. You can also burn slideshows.
The external HD is the easiest and quickest way. By backing up the entire iPhoto Library folder (i.e. copying it to the external HD and then keeping it current with a backup program like Synk, you can avoid most any catastrophic crash on your HD. I don't have my external drive running all the time. I only turn it on and mount it when I have some backups to perform.

  • Photo folders or albums

Photo folders or albums in the camera. is there a way to initiate folders or album while photos are still in the camera? I know I can do this with apps... but how about photos?

    You don't.
iPhoto works on a Library system, like iTunes.
So, like iTunes, where every song is in the Library, you make play lists. Songs can be in many playlists and use no extra disk space. In iPhoto all the shots are in the Library and a shot can be in many albums using no extra disk space. If you remove a photo from the Library it's also removed from the albums.

  • Iphoto folders not showing up to sync with ipod

i jsut got a new ipod photo and i can't get iphoto to sync with it. I am using an external hard drive, but that doesnt' seem to be the issue. If i just use the pictures folder to sync it works but i want to be able to access my iphoto folders. i created a new iphoto folder and started copying my photos in a few at a time. When i did this it would work for the first couple then it wouldjust stop showing up. anyone hve any ideas? i have an inkling that it might do with a corrupt file name or somethinglike that but i'm not sure. oh yeah the error message i get from itunes is error -50
    so yeah please help
PS. I'M USING A MAC, i looked through so many forums and most of the answers were from people who didn't seem to realize iphoto is a MAC program so if you don't know what it is or how it works please don't answer

Having same problem. iPhoto albums created in previous version of iPhoto will synch with video iPod, but iPhoto 6.02 albums will not.

  • Iphoto folders in finder, can i make them appear?

I use iphoto and have created many folders within the application to organize my photos. My problem here is, for example when I want to send a file from Skype, I cant drag a photo from iphoto and drop into the skype (send to) function. I have to select the photo through finder when I press the (send file) icon in skype. Of course, the photos are organized by dates, and I was wondering if there is a way of making the iphoto folders i personally created and named appear in the finder, so i can find my photos much faster? Right now i go to iphoto, find the name of the file and then when sending a file from skype search for that file and then send it. Quite a lenghly process.
(by the way. when you want to change the background image, in system preferences, it shows your iphoto folders.)

    Hi Daniel,
Unfortunately, no. We used to have that feature, but no more.
You can share/export the photo to the desktop and then choose it from there. (then delete it from the desktop) when you are done using it. You can also drag it right from the iPhoto Library window to the desktop (this copies the image to the desktop)
Yes the albums do show up in system Preferences. To be able to have the desktop image rotate at intervals you need to choose the album within iPhoto and then hit the desktop icon. Only this album of images will have the function of rotating at times intervals. None of the other Albums listed will have this Option. Another feature that was taken away.

  • How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

How to save iPhoto folders to external disk?

    You are not clear
In iPhoto folders go not hold photos - they are organizanially ielements and hold other folder or albums
are you talking aobt events by any chance? What do you want to do?
To move the photos form events to an external drive select them and export - see the user tip on exporting for details on the options available
to run iPhoto with your library on an EHD
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Why do iPhoto folders look different on iPad?

Why do iPhoto folders look different on the iPad?  When I launch the Photos app on the iPad you get a list of photos and photo albums that I have synced from my laptop.  All is fine.  However...
The photo albums are in a different order.....I can't see name or tag data with the folders .... impossible to search for specific pictures by name......Mainly, the entire interface is so different.  Instead of simple vertical list of photo albums (as on the Mac or the iPhone, iPod,  the iPad presents you with an array of those graphic-image photo piles -- the ones where the first picture in the album is shown on top, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Anyway to make photos and photo albums on the iPad more closely resemble the photo/album list you see on the Mac?
    David in KC

The Photos app on the iPad is just a basic photo viewer and isn't as sophisticated as iPhotos on the Mac and has limited functionality. Third-party apps will probably give you more of the functionality that you mention, but you can't change the Photos app.

  • How to import photos into Folders or Albums from backuped CD-R

    I need you advice.
I made folders of photos in CD-R when I backuped. I would like to import them into each folders and album I made in i photo newly from the folders on CD-R. Even though I select "Add library" under "File" and drag& drop and copy from Finder window/ CD-R window, all are just imported into Library.
    Many thanks,
    Mac

    Hi Mac Ito,
Here is something I typed out a couple of days ago for a response to another person. It might help you also.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
    Hope this helps!
    Lori

  • Bug ! - ATV doesn't preserve iphoto folders

I have @30,000 pictures in iPhoto... and of course, sorted into folders...
But ATV doesn't preserve that when it syncs... everything is flattened, alphabetized, and the most recent albums at the end...
Its totally silly and this isn't just a missing feature.. I see this as a bug ?
Whats up with this Apple ? Why don't you let me be able to find my pictures the way I've organized them on my Mac ?

So the ATV doesn't recognize the folder hierarchy that I've created within iPhoto
    Accepted
The albums just appear alphabetically, and I usually have no idea where pictures are, because the albums aren't even listed chronologically.
Mine certainly doesn't do that, yes the tv ignores nested folders, but it lists the albums inside them in the order they appear in the folder in iphoto, furthermore it lists the contents of the first folder first and the contents of the second folder second and so on. It doesn't list them alphabetically at all.
If you don't like them listed that way then change the way they are listed to one you like. (Just drag them into the order you want).
I want my albums to appear slightly differently on the tv than in iphoto, this presents no problem to me at all, as I say I can have my photo albums in any order I choose.

  • Iphoto folders on AppleTV?

Why does not my Iphoto folders show up on AppleTV? In iPhoto on the mac I have organised albums into each year, but on iTV (1st gen) only the albums appear, And sice I have 50.000 pictures in iPhoto, the list on iTV is wery looong.

    No.
You can re-order the photos in iphoto and batch rename them, but the changes will need resyncing to the tv.
