IPhoto Freezes When Importing from Camera

Each time I've tried to import from my camera iphoto freezes during the import and I have to force quit it. I have tried copying the photos from the cameras folders to the computer and then importing from there but it also freezes. I did not have any problems importing using iphoto on 10.4 and I have now tried to import onto a friends computer (PC) and it works fine (so not my memory card or camera gone wrong).
Any suggestions on how to import successfully????????

Nyssa
Start with the troubleshooting basics:
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPhoto freezes when importing from MobileMe

I'm using iPhoto '08 7.1.4, on a brand Macbook Pro new running OS X10.5.4. I've only had it for a few days.
I have a 2002 Powerbook running 10.3.9. I'm trying to transfer my iPhoto pictures from the old computer to the new using MobileMe, since the old computer doesn't seem to want to cooperate transferring anything through firewire or airport.
I'm able to upload my photos to MobileMe no problem.
Evey time I use "import to library" in iPhoto on the new computer, it will import one or 2 photos no problem, but then it freezes up when trying to import the 2nd or 3rd photo. This happens whether I try importing a group of photos, or one by one.
Then it keeps saying it's importing, but nothing happens. If I click stop import" it gets frozen on stopping the import, and nothing else happens.
I can't quit iPhoto. I can't force quit iPhoto. And I end up having to restart the computer just to get out of it. This keeps happening EVERY TIME.
Any suggestions and/or explanations? I'm VERY frustrated.
This is a brand new Mac, but iPhoto is acting like I'm using an old PC...

I'm able to upload my photos to MobileMe no problem.
Is this to the iDisk feature or to the MobileMe Gallery?
I think you might be better off copying the iPhoto Library Folder from the old machine to an external disk and from there to your new machine. This would be a whole lot faster... Also, if you're using the MobileMe Gallery feature then you're missing various parts of your library and assorted metadata.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - Don;t empty the system trash. The originals that you deleted from the Desktop are in there and are the only copies you have unless they are still in the camera.

  • IPhoto 11 freeze when import from SD on MacBookPro1,2

    Hello there,
I installed a brand new hard drive on my MacBookPro1,2 (17", Core Duo 2,16 , 2Go) with a fresh Snow Leopard install + iLife 11 Fully updated (10.6.8 + 9.1.5) , but I can't import any pictures directly from any SD card coming out of my cameras or VCR.
When I insert a SD card in my card-reader, it is well mounted and I can browse it or copy anything from/to it.
Then iPhoto shows up and detects the card, Import scren feature shows up but instead of showing the thumbnails, it shows a spinning wheel and the mouse cursor is spinning too.
To be able to use iPhoto (that is not responding), I have to force to quit it and restart my computer.
I tried many things that didn't make the Import screen feature work when I plug a SD Card :
    - Rebuilding the library using iPhoto (Command and Option)
    - Rebuilding the library using iPhoto Manager
    - Using a new Library
    - Using Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature
    - Using BatChmod
    - Reinstalling iLife 11
    - Reinstalling the whole computer
    - Formating cards with Disk Utility (using FAT16 and FAT32)
    - Formating cards with cameras
    - Trying many cards (2Go, 4Go, 32Go) (Kingston, Transcend)
    Things that worked :
    - Import screen feature with my iPhone4
    - Import menu "Folder / Import"
I tried using my library on my other Mac, Import screen feature worked perfectly.
So, I reinstalled this hard drive with the same Snow Leopard in my a MacBookPro5,1 (15", Core 2 Duo 2,4, 4Go).
Using my old photo library or an new one, the import screen feature has been working without any problem.
Then I putted back the hard drive on my MacBookPro1,2, ... the import screen feature didn't work....
It looks like a USB Driver problem, but I can read/write from the card.
There isn't any message in the Console when iPhoto freezes and is "Not responding...".
Is someone else having this issue ?
    Thank you for paying attention.

Looks like https://discussions.apple.com/message/12566520 but formating cards didn't help.

  • Any way to rename files when importing from camera with iPhoto?

I have a naming scheme that I've used when importing photos from my camera (e.g. 2008-09-12-Event ). I can't create a custom folder (in Pictures but outside iPhoto Library) or rename things when importing with iPhoto - is that right? I can't find any advanced options to import ...
If I want this (and don't want to use Adobe Bridge CS3), do I have to get Aperture?
    Thanks -
    Alexa
p.s. I haven't really figured out WHERE my photos go with iPhoto? I've been editing in Photoshop Elements 6 but then have to "Save As" to replace the file - saving it doesn't do it (I think that sends it to the iPhoto library somewhere?) Eek...

    Alexa:
    You might consider this workflow:
1 - using either Image Capture or a card reader upload the images to a folder on the desktop.
2 - name the folder with a brief description of the shoot. I use a short date and description: 08/01/08-Dinner at Toad Hall
3 - use a file renaming application like Resize! to batch rename the files to your specification. I use the international date (for the capture date) and a brief description: 2008-08-01-Dinner at TH-001.jpg.
This allows for good chronological searching and sorting as well as text searching on the description. It also avoids duplicate file name issues in the future. Granted a few extra steps up front but saves me a lot of time later on.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Freezes during Import from Camera

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new Macbook (exciting isn't it?) absolutely love it but I am having one small issue with iPhoto. Whenever I try to import some media from my camera iPhoto freezes whenever it comes to a video. Is there anything I can do about this? Is there a way to specify what I take from my camera?
    Thanks guys.

    Hello.
If your camera mounts on your desktop as an external drive, ignore the iPhoto Import Window that opens when you connect the camera. Instead, do File > Import to library. This brings up a window you can navigate to select your photos for import. You can even set it to column view and see a preview of files before you import. Select the photos you want and Import them. Then try a video clip and see if iPhoto can import it.
If your camera does not mount on the desktop, you can use a card reader, which does. The above procedure will then work.
If iPhoto does not like the video clips, use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload them. Image Capture gives you the option to "import some..." and select the files from the device. Upload to a folder anywhere NOT in the iPhoto Library folder. When done you can import into iPhoto and delete the initial location.
I have only recently begun having trouble getting iPhoto to upload video clips from my camera card. What changed (besides the recent software updates) is that I got my first 2 Gig card. I don't know if the problem with my video clips lies with iPhoto or with my older card reader not liking the 2 Gig card. I suspect it's the latter. Anyway, I upload my photos directly into iPhoto. Then I open Image Capture, select a video clip, and upload to the desktop. Image Capture seems to stall or freeze when uploading. The progress bar makes no visible progress. I have to click Cancel for the upload, then eject the card. After I do this, the movie file will appear on my desktop. I have only got this to work with one movie at a time. The first time I had to Force Quit my camera card ("mass storage"), but after doing so the video clip was there. Once on my desktop, iPhoto has no trouble importing the clips. It's not pretty, but it works. And once I fill this 2 Gig card, I'm going back to the trusty 1 Gig cards. (Until I feel like buying a new card reader.)

  • Raw and jpeg will not show when imported from camera

I am doing a OCA degree in digital photography using aperture 3 . I have been asked to take Raw and J pag , open up in the program I use. And not the differance and the make changes.
I have 1d MK III and 7 d     I cannot get both file types to show side by side..   Some one tell me how to do this please. I must have clicked , ticked something , that I cannot find to put right again.

As always, start by copying the images on to a folder on the hard drive and then backing up the folder. Never import directly from camera or card into Aperture or any other images app.
Then since this is an exercise not a batch workflow, simply rename the RAW and JPEG versions of one image and separately import each renamed version into Aperture. The two should each be Masters, one from the JPEG original and one from the RAW original.
Note the JPEG may initially "look" better on the (relatively low resolution) display due to in-camera presets like sharpening, etc. not present in the RAW file. However the RAW file contains much more image data, is much more editable and is capable of making superior (relatively very high resolution) hard copy prints.

  • Iphoto crashes when importing from SD card

I found similar discussions but no solution.
I am using snow leopard with Iphoto. I never had any problems but now I am not able to import pictures into the library. Iphoto crashes whenever I am trying to import from an SD card. I need to restart the computer to be able to use Iphoto again. Is there a limit of the library size? I read something about 250000 pictures but I am far away from this number. What might be the problem?

  • Does iPhoto alter images when importing from camera ?(+ tip for slideshow)

I came across the following article:
    http://www.andrewburke.orconhosting.net.nz/mac/builtin.htm#photo
The claim here is that during import iPhoto alters images in some way. The iPhoto experts, Terence OldToad, LarryHN and others, could you please comment, what's your opinions on this ?
    Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows
If you are running a slideshow in either Preview or iPhoto, you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine.
When I import images from my Nikon to the Mac, I keep them outside of iPhoto and at their original size, as an archive from which I might eventually produce some prints. From there I choose the best examples that I want to display onscreen and copy those out of the archive for processing. Each one of those favorites that I've chosen is then tweaked in an image editor (I use Gimp Shop) and the final step before sharpening is to resize it down to match the dimensions of my display.
My iMac is 1440 by 900, so if an image is narrower than that ratio I scale it so the height is exactly 900; if it's wider I scale it so the width is exactly 1440. After these tweaked and resized images are finished I import only those into iPhoto. Then when I run a slideshow they are displayed exactly at their original size (not stretched or shrunk to fit the screen) and the difference is stunning.

What he says is +"you want the image being shown to be exactly sized to your screen. Images from almost all modern cameras are much larger in pixel dimensions than your Mac's display, so they will be interpolated down to fit. When they are resized on the fly through interpolation they never look as crisp or pristine."+
The title of the piece is +"Resize Images for iPhoto Slideshows".+ He is talking about you resizing photos before you import so they will match the screen size during the display of a slide show on the screen - not iPhoto changing anything during the import of the photo but during the display of it - This is a bit like the cropping during printing questions - if you want to control exactly have is being shown (or printed) rather than use a generalized scheme to make photos fit a non native size then you much do the changes yourself
I'm sure that he is correct but since I use iPhoto as a photo library manager which lets me show quick and easy slideshows, I have no problem - *my original, unaltered photos are there in iPhoto* and available for use as I see fit - the degree of modification that takes place in the display of a slideshow has never even been noticeable to me - but then I do not see iPhoto as a single purpose slide show viewer - in fact that is a very minor feature for me

  • IPhoto unexpectedly quits when importing from camera

iPhoto is working fine but when I try to import photos from my camera, iPhoto quits and a box appears asking if I want to close or retry. I've retried, put new batteries in the camera, tried reading the card through my HP PSC 2355, and did a restart on the computer. I've had this camera for a year and a half and have never had this problem before. Any ideas anyone?

  • Grayed out, weird photos when importing from Camera Roll

OK, wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? I use Photoshop's Bridge import to pull my photos of my iPhone 3Gs. When I do, I often have these weird photos - I'm not totally sure why they are happening. And, the good news is that once they are pulled, they appear to be fine, but I'm just looking to see if I'm not the only one.
They seem to be possibly related to:
    a) being taken by an alternate camera app (I've tried several, Camera Genius, Snapture, CameraFlash and CameraZoom - yep, trying to get a better photo!),
    b) being altered in some way (I've used Photogene to improve some, but it makes a duplicate?), or
    c) being copied or saved to the CameraRoll from another program (I'm a Phanfare user and their Photon app is phenomenal).
So, some pictures of examples below, but as long as they images are OK when they come in, is it just fine? I always worry when something is not what it should be on an Apple device or within an Apple software.
    Thx - Alexa
(Saved to Camera Roll from Photon - you can see though that others saved the exact same way are fine?):

(Photo edited with Photogene - is still vertical when I pull it off and obviously color, etc.)?

    Hi Lawrence -
Thanks for your response! I'm on a Mac so my options are different, but I think about using a more basic viewer and went to iPhoto and looked at the pictures on my phone as a device, and they all look fine (or some are not duplicates) - so maybe it's just a Photoshop import thing or ghosting issue?

  • Imovie slows down then freezes while importing from camera

I am trying to import a movie from my canon hv10. I've never had problem the last 2 movies I did. but this time around it starts importing, and a few clips later, slows down to 1/8th time. then freezes. The camera is still playing but it has stopped importing. I have tried to pause it to let it catch up. Restarting it numerous times. It is being imported into my 500 GB hard drive. I have 400 GB available. It's worked before in HD. Any ideas? anything would be helpful, I've searched every single message board so far. thanks.

I had a smilar problem. it came up when I changed OS to Leopard OS X 10.5.
My Imovie HD 5 had been working fine until then under earlier OS versions, both in LP as well as in normal mode. Then all of a sudden importing stopped eery few seconds.
I checked many discussions in this forum and tried a lot of suggested solutions, to no avail. I have now come to realise that Leopard is the problem, not the camera, the cable, or preferences or good old iMovie HD.
I simply went back to an older laptop (iBook) running OS 10.3.9 and iMovie 3 . No problem whatsoever importing clips (just had to start a new project about every 20 minutes of clip import). Then attached my external harddrive via firewire, copied the projects to the Hard Disk and then opened them with iMovie HD 5 and bingo: the project was OK and could be further worked on.
So that does not solve the basic problem, but is not too complicated as workaround.

  • IPhoto 6 problem importing from camera

For some reason recently I have had problems importing photos from my camera.
I am using IPhoto version 6:06 and when attempting to load the photos directly from the SD card reader and the camera I get the continuous circle and nothing is loaded.
I cannot remember when I last upgraded the software but it was recent and i would like to be able to drop back to previous version if the current one is causing the problems.
Has anyone had this problem and how can I fix it.
    Thanks
    Norman

I recently upgraded from OSX 10.3 to 10.5. I don't know for sure if it's related, of course, but now nothing happens when I connect my camera to the computer; it used to automatically open iPhoto and go to the import window. Now I do not even here the clicking in the hard drive when I make the connection. I've tried checking the USB cable to make sure it's securely in place at both the computer and the camera, and making sure the camera is in the correct mode. I've also tried your troubleshooting basics (Repair Permissions, deleting the plist file, and creating a new system account, none of which worked. I'm ready to try a reinstallation, since that's what you suggested may be indicated in your Jan 5 letter to Jarmel. Is that what you suggest? If so, do I need to uninstall anything before running another installation? And do I run it from the iLife disk? Do I do a custom install of iPhoto only? Or do I run it from either my original system disks that came with the computer or from my new Leopard disk?
Also--I know this is perhaps off topic, but I mention it in case it might be a related problem. Since installing Leopard, my keyboard button that normally opens and closes the disk drawer does not work at all. I'm having to open it by restarting and holding down the mouse button.
Thanks for your time. Sorry if too many questions.

  • Can't delete images when importing from camera

I use Nikon Transfer to import images from my digital cameras but now I can't delete the images from the card once transferred. I've also tried Image capture but Delte is greyed out. It seems like a Permissions thing but I'm not sure how to check.
    thanks

  • Photo files size when importing from camera, uploading to facebook

When I import photos from my camera to iPhoto, then upload them to facebook, they are not the original size. This is my first mac and first time to use iPhoto so maybe that's normal. Is there a setting I need to change? How do I know if the files I have imported are being saved on my computer with their original specs? I am hesitant to clear the pics from my camera, fearing I might lose their original quality!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
As for facebook, when using my old pc the photos remained the original size after uploading. It wasn't until I used iPhoto that they began to upload in a smaller version.
Are you referring to file size as in KB or MB or image size as in pixel dimension. As Terence pointed out I doubt if Facebook will accept a full image files at the original size. Most are in the MB range and Facebook would run out of storage space in no time.
It might very well be that iPhoto will resize the pixel dimension of the photos to a "standard" size for uploading and Facebook then downsizes the actual file size. That means compressing the file to make a smaller file but not a smaller image.
