Iphoto keeps shutting down during import

Is there a limit on the number of pictures you can have on iphoto? I am trying to load the pictures from my vacation (yes there are around 800 of them) and the computer either errors and shuts down the iphoto program. Or restarts the entire computer automatically. I don't know why it's doing either. I have the pictures on my laptop but I would like to put them on our big computer for editing and safe keeping. Thoughts on this?

Is there a limit on the number of pictures you can have on iphoto?
Yes. 250,000, so you may have some headroom there.
How are you getting connecting the two Macs together? While things can go wrong causing iPhoto to crash it would be very unusual to cause the Mac to restart.

My iphoto keeps shutting down while I'm typing a caption. Is there a way to stop that?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    What version of iPhoto?

Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...

  • IMovie shuts down during import

Can anyone tell me why iMovie keeps shutting down while I am importing from my Sony DCR HC30? I have imported 2 other movies without error. The one I am working on today has been a nightmare. iMovie has shut down at least 5 or 6 times now. I am about to give up BUT it is really cool footage of my 3 sons skateboading at FDR skatepark in Philly! Please help.
    Thanks,

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the easiest fix attempts: 1- repair disk permissions with Disk Utility; 2- delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
If that doesn't work log into another account on your Mac and see if you can import successfully there. If you can the culprit is something in your primary account. Post back with what you find and we can go from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Aperture shut down during import

I started the import of photos from iPhoto to Aperture. Aperture shut down in the process. How do I upload only the photos that did not transfer? I tried import again, but it appears to want to upload the entire library again..

Have you done any work in the Aperture Library?  If not, just delete it and redo the import into a new Library.
This may be a good idea anyway, until you determine what caused Aperture to shut down during the last import.  Aperture allows you to easily merge Libraries.
Make a back-up of your iPhoto data first -- after confirming that nothing was harmed when Aperture shut down while importing.
Also, if you haven't upgraded your OS to the current version (you have 10.7.1 listed), you should.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where in the process does it shut down? When you try to drag a photo into the book or into a page?
If it's when trying to add a photo, can you edit that photo without crashing and do you use Photoshop Elements or Photoshop for any of your editing?
    Do you Twango?

  • IPhoto shuts down during import

I have recently downloaded the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.2 which included the iPhoto update to 7.1.2 but now whenever I try to do any kind of importing iPhoto freezes and shuts down. I can edit, and view all of my photos just fine but I can't add photos to my library. This has only started happening since the recent upgrade. I've tried several of the fixes offered for problems similar to mine in the other topics and my last resort is to reinstall iPhoto, however I would like to avoid doing this. Are there any other options to fix this?

  • IMac keeps shutting down during startup loading bar under apple sign

My electricity went out and came back on a minute later. When my computer started up again the font was back to original factory setting. I then restarted my computer and every time it would load up it would shutdown. The computer chimes and then reaches a grey screen with an apple sign. Below it is a loading bar. This bar loads about 10% then goes back down and loads from 0%. A couple minutes later it shuts down after staying at 0%. It keeps doing this routine every time I start the computer. I then did a command s and rebooted the computer to factory reset it. The computer still shuts down and has the old habit of reaching 10% and 0% with the loading bar but now after the loading bar is at 0% it then disappears to the Apple sign and a loading circle. It then shuts down again. This iMac was originally 10.6.8. but i believe i updated it to 10.9.4 and was purchased new around 2008. I also tried to put in a CD with Firmware Restoration CD 1.7. but that didnt work. Can anyone help? or has anyone had similar issues?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS (10.4.10), Quicktime (7.1.6) and the app.
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    4. Are there movies on these cards as well as photos?

Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

I'll give it a go Ogelthorpe.  Ran the more intense hour long hardware test last night and then left it shut down overnight.  No results again for the test, but this morning I've run it through a few minutes of borderlands 2 with no shut down.  Strange.  Am fully expecting it to start playing up again though.

  • Iphoto keeps shutting down after upgrade on my iMac

I recently upgraded my iphoto and now ever time I load pictures or even try to edit pictures it shuts down.

Post the first 50 lines only of the crash report
    Regards
    TD
