Iphoto no longer deletes the images from iPhone 5s after import.

I have the latest version of IOS, and iPhoto.  Now, when I connect my iPhone 5s and import the photos and select the delete all that was imported option the photos on the iPhone are NOT deleted.
Everything is stock apple software.  Not jail broken, or any sketchy software installed.  All updates are installed immediately.  Has anyone experienced this problem?
Ben.

The short answer:
You're wrong.  Either the software is malfunctioning and is suffering from a critic bug, or the Hardware is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.  Everything is under warranty so it doesn't really matter which one it is as long as the issue is resolved.
I just want to find out how many other users are experiencing this issue and help narrow it down before I report it to Apple.
The long answer:
Hi,
I'm a CSEE engineer with with a background in QE/QA. It's literally my job to define exactly what a piece of software and hardware products is supposed to do.
I validate the design of products, and verify the functionality of the product. For the record I do not work for Apple, and my employer is not affiliated with Apple in any way. Your answer blew me away!  LOL.
Wow.  Where to start? Any answer is not better than none.
Your answer is completely wrong and it's dangerous because your kind of answer will discourage regular people from asking questions on this forum. It sounds like it's coming form a professional and it sounds decisive, definitive, and final.  Almost like an edict! LOL.  Unfortunately it's also completely incorrect. That's the only reason I felt compelled to respond to your response.
Saying:
Terence Devlin wrote:

is a ridiculous answer.
I am saying that as both an engineer with an extensive experience in QA/QE, as well as a lay person who prefers to to use Apple products. Software and hardware should perform as designed and as expected. Apple software and hardware usually does exactly that. When it doesn't it gets fixed very quickly as long as it's reported.
You' don't trust Apple software and hardware to behave as expected? Why buy Apple then if you have such a low opinion of the reliability, design, and quality assurance of their products? It's the most expensive hardware in the market in it's class; so it's definitely not the "bargain" factor.
I buy Apple products because they perform as expected, have a superior intuative user interface, and it is all backed by solid customer service. This is the first time in years that I've had to deal with such a glaring malfunction. Somehow in jumping from Mavericks to YosemiteI, and IOS 7.x to  IOS 8.x somehow the ball got dropped and I just want to know if this is a "one in a million case," or is it a more common bug before I report it to Apple. Either way it will be reported.
I am using two Apple products together and using Apple branded software designed specifically for those products on top of that. It's a MacBook pro, an iPhone 5s, and I'm using Apple's iPhoto as the interface. You actually said:
Terence Devlin wrote:
... Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card or Phone. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then erase the data.
2. You can erase the photos from your Phone with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder)
So first you say specifically to "never use iPhoto to delete photos."  An app that was specifically designed by Apple for this purpose. Then you up the ante and and add "or any other app." But then step 2 you reverse yourself completely and say "use image capture" to erase photos. Why trust one Apple software, And distrust another? Why not trust the one designed for the purpose? Is it an article of faith? LOL.
I don't know if you ever noticed this; but, when you connect your iPhone to your MacBook, OSX automatically launches iPhoto as the de facto standard app for dealing with imports and deleting images from your iPhone.  Yes you can customize that; but, the default factory standard is iPhoto. This has been the case for years, and it has worked flawlessly until now.
To advise people to not trust the app designed by Apple for Apple Products to do the work it was designed to do is funny to say the least.
The expected behavior of iPhoto is that imported images to the MacBook should be deleted when I tell the software to delete images. When the software tells me that it is deleting images and then I find out that it did not; that is a bug, and critical one at that. Major software functionality is being affected and the software is not behaving as designed, advertised, or expected.
I verified the bug by:
1- Saying no to the delete option at import time,
2- verified that the images have been imported.
3- disconnected and reconnected the iPhone.
4- When iPhoto informs me that all images have already been imported. I choose the option to delete images that have already been imported.
5- IPhoto still fails to delete the images.
I'm able to reproduce this bug 100% of the time. I want to know if others are experiencing this behavior.
Where did you ever get the idea that malfunctioning software, or software that is not performing according to design is a "Good" thing or that a bug is not a bug; but, a desirable feature?
From a lay person's perspective, the dialog box box in the iPhoto "import" function clearly states that import was successful, and asks if the user wishes to delete the photos that have been already imported.  This is the way iPhoto has always worked ever since my iPhone 3gs days.
The fact that the iPhotos app asks if you want want the pictures that were just imported DELETED from your iPhone means the expected software and hardware behavior is that the photos that were already imported should be deleted and the storage freed for others uses.  Having to use third-party software is not a real workaround or even desirable. There is something wrong with either the iPhone hardware, iPhoto software, OS X Yosemite, Or IOS 8.1.2. Any one of these issues is important enough that it should be looked at.
I need to zero in on the cause, and have Apple fix it. It could hardware or software issue.  It could be just me, or hundreds, or thousands of people. Everything I have is under warranty so the repair is free and it is expected. I have been able to consistently reproduce this error and I want to know how widespread this problem is.
The reason I buy Apple products at a higher premium instead of alternative brands such as Samsung, or Sony, or LG is the Apple reliability and user experience. If as a user I don't report a bug; then over the long-term, that reliability and user experience is going to degrade. I'm not investigating this as an "Apple" hater; but, as a supporter and an enthusiast. Finding out how widespread the problem is would help Apple out. When I'm on the solving end of this kind of an equation; I know I would appreciate all the information that I can get.
On a more personal level, this bug has already negatively affected my user experience. Recently we were visiting a national Park, I took hundreds of pictures, dozens of videos, and I dutifully imported them into my laptop that night and I elected to delete what has been imported. I assumed that when iPhoto reported the pictures were deleted; that this was indeed the case. The next day we went to another national Park and only a third through the day my iPhone 5s reported that there was no more storage. I then had to then manually delete over 900 photos and videos.
There is no batch delete in the iPhone "Photos" user app interface. I had to go into the iPhone "Photos" select menu, scroll through hundreds of photos. Find where I had imported the day before, and then delete well over 900 photos and videos manually by individually selecting each one and then clicking delete. It took over an hour.
Yes, in the select dialog box you can select the multiple images and then click delete once; But, on a moving boat with all sorts of distractions this little exercise took an exceedingly long time. It also took my attention away from my family for well over an hour. I didn't see anything that I now can remember during that time and I couldn't interact with my family the way they deserved. I have no memories of that boat trip either in my brain, or on my camera because I was busy deleting. It wasn't by choice, I had to either do the deleting right then, or miss the show that was after the boat ride. I chose the lesser of two evils.
The point of my little story is, that the boat ride with my family is an irrecoverable moment in time that is forever lost. It wasn't life-and-death, but it was precious and it is gone forever. There is no way to recover it. There are no time machines.  This simple bug, or hardware malfunction was the cause, and I want to make sure it doesn't happen to me, or anyone ever again.  That was the first time I experienced the bug.  Since then it has been the rule and not the exception.
BB.

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Deleting all images from iPhone (ios 6.1.4)

I am currently trying to delete all the images from my phone to clear space for other applications.
(Transferring them to my computer was an excruciating process and actually forced me to purchase an external program, but I digress.)
I can't delete photos at all in the iPhone photos app. Going edit > select photo > delete causes the Photos app to crash every time. This happens whether I have selected one or more than one photos. I have restarted the app (double tap home button and delete the app from the fold-up menu) several times, but the problem recurs when I try again. In any case, I have over 37,000 photos so this would be a horribly inefficient way to do it.
    Key things to note
    1) I only have Windows 7 on my PC. Therefore, I cannot use any mac related programs like iPhoto to mass delete images.
    2) Windows explorer is unable to consistently recognize my iPhone. I have gone into device manager many times and reinstalled the driver, and attempted other fixes I found off of Google, but alas for past several months I have not been able to get it to recognize the iPhone as a camera or as anything at all. As of recent weeks, the iPhone does not even show up in the list of external devices plugged into the computer regardless of driver reinstallation, and only my external HDD appears.
    3) Back in the past when the Autoplay window did show up, there was never an option to import pictures and videos- furthermore, selecting the sole 'open device to view files' simply showed me a series of blank folders in my iPhone.
At that time, I already had had my settings set to show hidden files and folders, so I was mystified that windows explorer insisted no files were present in the folders when there were quite obviously photos on my phone.
I am unable to import photos using windows explorer. As such, this fix cannot be used: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
I am very disappointed at how nonfunctional the interaction between Windows and Apple devices has become. In the past, I was able to import pictures from my iphone 4S this same PC using windows explorer's autoplay popup, and it is sad that this is unsupported with the  iPhone 5.
    4) iTunes, which is on the same computer, does recognize the iPhone. I can sync perfectly fine.
    5) Very few of the images have been imported from my computer. Most of them were taken or saved on the phone itself, so removing sync of photos from the sync process doesn't do anything.
    6) There are no photos on Photo Stream or Photo Library, because I only recently found out about these features (1-2 days ago researching solutions). All 37,000+ photos are in Camera roll. This means that I cannot turn off Photo stream and have the pictures disappear like in this fix. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5099543?start=0&tstart=0
Given all of this information and my limitation in options, how do I delete all of the images on my phone efficiently?

Incidentally, restoring the phone to factory settings is not a viable solution because I have a lot of apps, notes and other material which I do not wish to lose and would not be stored in a backup.

  • How to delete the files from iPhone before selling?

How do I delete the files from my old iPhone4 before selling?

    Hey adhot,
Before selling your iPhone, you'll want to follow these directions:
Before you sell or give away your iOS device, make sure that you have removed all of your personal information. Follow these steps to protect your data and get your device to its factory default state for the new owner:
    Back up your device.
Go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Erase All Content and Settings.
This will completely erase your device and turn off iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Game Center, and other services.
If you are using iOS 7 and have Find My iPhone turned on, your Apple ID and password will be required. After you provide your password, the device will be erased and removed from your account so that the next owner can activate it.
Contact your carrier for guidance on transferring service to the new owner.
When the device is turned on for the first time by the new owner, Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
Important: Do not manually delete contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photo streams, or any other iCloud data while signed in to your iCloud account, or the content will also be deleted from the iCloud servers and all of your iCloud devices.

  • IPhoto won't delete the photos from my iphone once I have imported them and indicated to delete the photos from my phone.  Am I doing something wrong?

I have imported several hundred photos from my iPhoen 5C into iPhoto library.  I selected yes to delete them from my iPhone but the photos remain on the phone.  Am i doing something wrong.  I don't want to pay apple a fee to get this answered via their support system.  This should be straight forward, shouldn't it?  Thanks.

Are you asking about iCloud Photo Library (Beta) as described in: iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support   ?
In that case you will still see all photos on your iPhone, even after uploading the Photos to the iCloud Photo Library.  The photos on your iPhone may be light-weight optimized previews, if you have the setting
Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library > Optimize [device] Storage   enabled.
But as long as you have enough free storage, will the your iPhone keep the full resolution versions of the photos you access most frequently.

  • Browsing iPhoto library (stored in the cloud) from iPhone

    Dear Apple community geeks,
Can you please suggest the best solution for the below:
I have my iPhoto library stored in the cloud (CrashPlan) and a personal NAS (Synology).
I'd like to view pictures of this library from my iPhone without losing the library structure (Projects, Albums..).
So far, browsing via available apps, I'm only left with the classical "folder structure" of the iPhoto library (as if I'd "show package contents").
Any good option with my current set-up? If not, would (at least) iCloud make this possible?
    Many thanks!
    Petr

I have taken off the unwanted apps from iTunes but they still show on my iPhone. Go to App Store > Updates > Purchased > and the unwanted Apps are under both "All" and "Not on this Iphone" tabs. There is a little cloud with a down arrow so I can redownlaod it to my phone but, I want to remove some all together. It is hard to scroll thru all of them to find Apps that you may use on special occasion. Can I get rid of the in this location on my phone? And if so, How? Thanks

  • How to delete the Data from Iphone 5 when the Phone is damaged.

    Dear All,
I am using Iphone 5 , my Cell phone got damaged and its at service center . how could i delete my personal data , so that no one can see it .
    Please upodate . Its urgent

The Service Center is likely going to need to get into your phone to test their fixes. Not sure what personal data you are referring to, but since it is in a myriad of places, it's not really somehing you can do anything about. You would have to either Lock or Wipe your phone, and either one of those things would prevent the servicer from being able to get in an test things....
Do you not trust the people who you left your device with to be repaired?

  • How to delete photos/pics from iPhone 3G???

Please help. I am at a loss. How do you delete photos/pics (that you uploaded) from iPhone 3G??? I see no delete button, no trash button or anything that would instruct me to remove the photo?
    Thanks.

You can delete photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll only and only one at a time.
Photos available in your iPhone's Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Since you have a Mac, you can use iPhoto for this or the Image Capture application. After the import is complete, both applications include an option to erase all photos from your iPhone's Camera Roll, or you can delete select photos.
Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process cannot be deleted on or from your iPhone. You can remove any or all photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone in the same way they were transferred to your iPhone - via the iTunes sync process.

i have enabled iCloud on my iPhone. In case i delete the photos from my phone would they still be on my iCloud account or will it sync and delete it on iCloud as well?

    Hello lonestar17,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you are curious about how iCloud stores your photos.  Photo Stream stores your photos temporarily so that you can have time to sync them to your computer, but the photos will expire after 30 days:
Does using My Photo Stream substitute for using iCloud Backup or iTunes to back up the photos in my Camera Roll ?
No. Photos in My Photo Stream are saved on the iCloud server for 30 days. To save or back up these photos, you must copy them from My Photo Stream to your Camera Roll on your iOS device. You can then back up your Camera Roll using iCloud or iTunes.
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Because your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, select Photos (or Photo Stream) > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture. On your PC with My Photo Stream enabled in the Control Panel, all of your photos will be imported into C:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\iCloud Photos\My Photo Stream. For iCloud Control Panel 2.0 to 2.1.2 users, the path isC:\\Users\<user name>\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream .
