Iphoto rebuild still missing pix

after having iphoto problems and assuming a corrupted library, i have rebuilt the library first with iphoto, then with iphoto library manager. iphoto still isn't showing any photos after oct 2007. i see the folders and pix for more recent photos inside the iphoto package and can open them successfully. i've also found folders earlier than october with pix that aren't in the rebuilt library. i know there are problems with re-importing. so i have 3 questions
--is there a way with mac/leopard to do a directory comparison and find out specifically which pix from the original iphoto library are missing from the rebuilt library.
--once i know all the pix that are missing, is my best strategy to copy them to a spot outside of the iphoto package, then import them to the rebuilt library?
--i haven't checked this out in detail, but several of the files that iphoto library manager didn't copy over were movie files--those little .avi files imported originally from my camera. is there a different way i should be handling those?
thanks for any suggestions,
-db
p.s. thanks to this board for the iphoto library manager suggestion.

dvb:
It appears that your only option to get all of the photos and movies into the library is to create a new library and import the Originals folder from the old one. However, you may be able to keep the keywords, titles and comments of those photos in the library now that you can see. Just follow Tutorial #1.
To help prevent this type of loss, damaged/corrupted library database file, see the tip at the end of my signature below.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Try rebuilding the library.
Hold down the Option and Command keys then launch iPhoto.

  • IPhoto Rebuild Question

Hello. I tried tagging this question on to an existing post, but no reply, so will try a new post. Hope someone may help me out. Thanks.
Hope you can help me on this problem. I will go into quite a bit of detail so you may be able to assist. I am using iPhoto 4.0.3. I have about 12,000 photos on my photo library. I have 7 GB remaining in my HD. Somehow, while I was trying to fix a previous problem, I trashed Thumbs 32,64 and data. (I did this as I was told to do this on this forum and it seemed to work before)
The first problem that started showing up, was in my Pictures file (Home/user/Pictures.iphoto) where a month was missing, ie: it would show, for 2008, months 1,2,3,4 and then miss 5 (even though there were photos taken in month 5, then it jumped to months 6 and 9, which werent even here at that time. The latest thing that is occuring is that a portion of my iPhoto pictures are blank, ie: they come up on screen, when I click on Photo Library and a file number shows under them, but no photo is shown. When I click on one of these it just opens up into a blank screen. Of the 12000 photos, I would guess a hundred or so (the last ones) are showing this symptom......except the last 20 or so photos DO show up.
Further information, I do have a 500 GB Lacie backup drive with Retrospect Express (RE) software on it. Unfortunately RE seems to have been doing automatic backups to my iPhoto, ie: as soon as a photo was put into iPhoto, it would appear on the backup. Obviously a corruption has taken place and wonder if you can give me some advise on working this out, ie a rebuild. Is the 7GB free enough to do a rebuild? If my RE automatically backs up during the rebuild, will that be another problem to deal with? Thanks Brie.
PS: I cannot seem to find a way to stop the Automatic Backup of iPhoto by RE. I have posted a query on an RE site, but no reply so far. Another thing is that the RE backup still shows the Thumbs I referred to above.

Thanks very much Brie, appreciate the comments. Unfortunately there has been another problem crop up, please bear with me while I elaborate on in order to keep you up to speed. We had a bad thunderstorm in the area last night and I decided to disconnect the Lacie external. When I did, an error message came up on the monitor indicating that "Your iPhoto Library is missing, please make sure the disk containing your photo library is mounted and restart iPhoto". A separate error message had come up indicating I had not removed the Lacie properly, in that I should have ejected the icon first. There was a spinning beach ball on the iPhoto error report, so I force quite iPhoto. When I tried to restart it, an error report comes up saying "Your iPhoto Libray was not found. Do you want to find your iPhoto Library--iPhoto cant continue without a photo library. Make sure the disk containing your photo library is connected" Below that is three options: Quit, Create Library or Find Library. I have checked my internal HD and the iPhoto Library appears to still be there (15 GB by the way).
I still have the Lacie disconnected. Prior to all this occuring I was going to do a Rebuild but was having difficulty finding 15 GB of clear space to do it with, which is what the Apple rebuild document says you require. If I can get the iPhoto Library back and I can go back to square one and try to deal with a rebuild. One more thing, to assist you, is that when the Lacie was hooked up, it seemed to automatically back up any iPhoto changes I made, ie: when a new photo was put into iPhoto, the Lacie seemed to back up that photo immediately. I didnt really like that system but was having difficulty trying to figure out how to stop it. So, as an aside, I'm assuming that my iPhoto is stil backed up on the disconnected Lacie also. Sorry to have made this so lengthy, but wanted to make sure you had all, or most of the facts. Regards.

  • Photos deleted from iPhoto, but still in Library folder

    iPhoto 9.5.1
Strange behavior in iPhoto : let's say I imported 100 photos. Then, in iPhoto, deleted 80, keeping 20. Emptied trash in iPhoto. Then emptied Trash in Finder.
Let's say the "_DSC1234.JPG" photo was among deleted files. When searching "_DSC1234.JPG" in Spotlight, I find it in the "Master" folder of the "iPhoto Library" folder (Photothèque in French).
I've got a lot of photos deleted, but kept in Library, Not good for privacy, not good for hard drive space.
For exemple, I find 514 ".NEF" photos in the iPhoto searchbox. But when searching in the iPhoto LIbrary folder with Spotlight for files with ".NEF" in their names, I find 1048 ! No duplicates, no previews or "faces" (hey are in JPEG), but photos I deleted, before emptying iPhoto and Finder trash !!
    Rebuilding Library didn't help.
I'm using a user account not allowed to administrate the computer. Maybe a link ?
The question was already asked, but never answered :
Growing iPhoto Library, deleted photos still in folders
Deleted Photos:  Why are they still in my iphoto library folder?
Photos deleted from within iPhoto are still in Library folder
    Thanks for your help !

Strange behavior again, with the original library : If I select NO event and use the menu Information, I've got 14.634 photos. If I select all events, I've got 15.760 photos. How can I have more photos in all events than in my Library ??????
Check, if you have hidden photos.
File > New Smart Album,  with a rule: Photo is hidden
In my iPhoto Library the "Hidden" flag accounts for the difference in the Photos count between selecting all events and no events.
Make sure, "View > Hidden Photos" is enabled in the View menu, so you can recognize hidden photos by the X.

  • Photos and photo albums disappeared, but iPhoto library still has 60 GB.

Photos and photo albums disappeared, web gallery titles remain but show (0). iPhoto library still has 60 GB size. How do I retrieve photos, events and albums. Thanks in advance.

Are you getting an "!" in the window when you try to edit a photo. The "!" means that the library has lost the file path to the original file. This happens when there has been an interruption to iPhoto while it is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. Moving, renaming files or folder inside the library package while in the Finder is another way you can get that indication. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
• Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing

The Albums folder in iPhoto Library folder missing. This means when I try to sync photos to my iPod (video) in iTunes, none of my photo albums show up (though I can seclect a specific folder useing year, month day, etc.). It also mens that I must navagate through the date folders to find photos when trying to attach them to e-mails.
I am running a G5 with the latest version of OSX, iPhoto, iTunes.
How do I recreat this folder?
    Thankd for any help.
    Cheers__ Heath

    Hi Heath,
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Also, when you choose a folder to sync for your iPod, choose iPhoto in the drop down menu in iTunes, then choose the Album you want to sync. Do not choose a folder on your hard drive and then the Albums folder in the iPhoto Library folder.

  • Iphoto and imovie missing in OXS

Did a resect on my macbook air 2010 and reinstall OXS lion, iphoto and imovie missing.Log into App store to download this two app, still the same. Can anyone help?thank you!

Did you follow the instructions contained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
That will work if you purchased the machine new with the ilife apps or you bought them at the app store.
If you purchased the machine used, then the license is not transferable as it is tied to the original owner - you would need to purchase them using your own Apple ID.

  • Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto email template missing,

I am using iphoto '11 and email photo from within. The "classic" and "Journal" template are missing. They used to exist but are blank now. When trying to use them anyway to send photo the photo are attached but not showned in the mesage body.
I tried to create a second iphoto library. Then the two template are there when working within that new photo library.
I have an other account on the same iMac with a different iphoto library. The two templates are present.
I tried to delete the iphoto.plist from the user/preference/ folder. The two missing template are still missing.
Is there a way to reset and reinstall those two templates ?
Using an iMac, lion 10.7.2 fully updated. Iphoto 9.2.1 (628).
    Thanks,
    Olivier

First try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Next  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If the themes are still missing a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally and apply all updates.

Hello. When I was on the internet with previous Firefox, there was Trusteer Rapport (A seurity software for UK banking: http://www.trusteer.com/) icon was still there. However after Firefox gave me an update alart to be 9.0.1 on Mac OSX 10.6.8 today and after I followed the update in this early evening, Trusteer Rapport is gone. • Still missing content after 9.1.6 "upgrade" and content re-installs

I updated to 9.1.6 and immediately I noticed that various .aif files were missing, from my ESX24 instruments and Garageband loops.
After reading other peoples' similar stories and solutions here, I spent some hours (and probably $$ for all the bandwidth) downloading and re-installing "Garageband content" (which showed needed updating) as well as the "Essential" and "Additional" Logic content packages (which were supposedly already installed).
After downloading about 7GB of stuff, I am still missing content, .aif files which are part of ESX24 instruments and Garageband loops.
I guess I'll continue downloading and re-installing the rest of the Jam Pack content -- about another 10GB -- and hope that I get that stuff back. No guarantees though, I suppose.
Apple, this happened to me once before, when I upgraded from Logic Studio 8 to 9. It's really, really maddening.

You'll need to either manually copy over the old content, or download the media packs after you install the 9.0 version.  In the Application menu, select "Download additional content...".  However, do NOT click the "Select All Uninstalled" and instead download each part separately.  A bit of added work, but selecting "Select all uninstalled"is giving people fits in that you end up with a lot of "Download Failed" messages and nothing installs.
