IPhoto suddenly wants to export only unedited photos now. Why do no crops or light/colour adjustments get saved?

INTRO: I have used iPhoto for many years (since iPhoto 5 I believe). As a non-professional photographer, I have been very happy with the application, as it has let me do most operations I need: Photo organising, adjustments of light, levels, contrast, colour balance, straightening and crop. (I haven't even had the need for Photoshop Elements for several years.)
I usually make some adjustments to each and every shot – some big and some small – before exporting as a high quality JPEG for uploading to Flickr or other places I use them.
PROBLEM: I have recently upgraded to a new Mac and iPhoto '11, and have been using this version happily for about a month now. Earlier this week, straight out of the blue, iPhoto has decided "all by itself" to stop saving edited/adjusted/cropped JPEG exports of my Nikon RAW photos, and instead only saves the unedited version as a JPEG. None of my crops or light/colour adjustments get saved anymore! (I first noticed when a closely cropped shot came out uncropped, and a shot I'd converted to black/white came out in full colour.)
(Strangely enough, it seems iPhoto treats "original JPEGs" differently, as shots from my non-RAW cameras get exported with my edits preserved.)
Has anybody else experienced the above described problem with exporting photos? Is it a bug, or is it some setting somewhere that I am not aware of? If I can't resolve this issue, I will have to stop using iPhoto and find a new "photo lab" and establish a new workflow. I hope I don't have to.
Best regards,
Jørgen in Oslo, Norway

Hi again, Terence, and again thanks for your advice.
I tried the Rebuild Library operation during the weekend, but having some 160 GB (1400+ events and 20000+ photos from 2007–2011) in my main (corrupted) iPhoto library, the operation seemed like it would be taking the whole of Saturday and maybe Sunday as well. I started the rebuild in the morning, iPhoto Library Manager chewed its way slowly through my photos, but iPhoto kept crashing every once in a while (especially often if other applications were running at the same time). When it had been working for about six hours, the import part was finally finished, but the metadata rebuilding process looked like it would be taking hours still, and I really needed to get to work on some other things on the same machine. So unfortunately, I had to abort.
Thus, on Sunday morning, I changed strategies: I decided to use iPhoto Library Manager to break off a smaller subset of my gargantuan problem library to a new library. I had already made a full manual backup of the corrupted Library to a USB external hard drive beforehand (and I also have continuous Time Machine backups), so I am pretty lax with "destructive" stuff right now, as long as they can fix my problem. This is how I'm working now:
I created a completely fresh and empty iPhoto library, and used iPhoto Library Manager to move a handful of recent iPhoto events from the corrupted library. I have now tried some edits and exports, and the new library is behaving healthy at the moment. I'm keeping my fingers crossed – if things work as good as they seem in the days to come, I will split up my entire, corrupted 2007–2011 library into separate sets. (Maybe one or two for each year.)
And in the future, I have decided to make a new iPhoto library every 1st January and 1st July.

The absolutely FIRST thing you have to do is contact your clients webmaster and get the required specs:  frame size, bitrate.
Then you can either export directly out of FCP or take a file into compressor and make it there.

Thank you for your reply.  I have been backing up my entire computer and when I follow anything having to do with Lightroom I am not finding actual photos.  I hope to find the photos that have been backed up along with updates to them that my wife has been performing during her edits.  Found Lightroom 2 catalog Previews/Lrdata.  Could that be it?

  • Iphoto 5 : problems with exportation high quality photos with music

as I want to export some photos in an acceptable quality with music, I found the only possibility was by exportation them as quicktime file (xx.mov).
There you can choose the resolution of your photos.
By doing this there exists a button "momentan ausgewählte musik zum film hinzufügen" which even after many trials did not work.
even apple support couldn`t solve the problem.
Does anyone have an idea how it would work?
PS: I tried also other ways by using exportation as diashow in iphoto , or by using idvd - in both ways music is exported but photos are visible only in very low quality.

Hi Léonie, All the sw is at latest update. The library was simply copied from the old machine to the new machine. When I launched the new version of iPhoto (on the new machine) I pointed it to the copied iPhoto library and it picked it up without any issue. The first time I opened it, iPhoto spent some time migrating the data format from the old iPhoto version to the new, but that was done only once. I am not sharing the library between the old iPhoto and new; now the migrated library is for the exclusive use of the new iPhoto.
Regarding error messages in syslog, it's quite funny, I do see them, and they reflect the fact that iPhoto has gone off to la-la land for extended periods of time, ignoring all user input (this is what results in the spinning disc in Mac OS):
1/28/14 9:16:18.792 PM WindowServer[127]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "iPhoto" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
1/28/14 9:16:20.926 PM WindowServer[127]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "iPhoto" after 3.13 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
So that was a common 3 second "hang" of iPhoto. Nothing apart from those kinds of messages.
Thanks for the links to iStat... i do in fact have the latest version of it and don't have that problem with Mavericks.

  • Want to export only short part of a longer project

I have a 27 min project already edited on the timeline, but I want to export to a MOV  in H264 only a portion (Approx 6 min) of it
so that someone can review it.  I don't want to use Compressor
    Can this be done?  How???
    Any help appreciated
    Thanks
    AppleLou.

I've amended that thread because it no longer works in 10.0.1. You can either copy and paste clips into a new project or copy and paste the compound clip into a new project to export. If you try to export the compound clip it will still export the project, unless the compound clip was made in the browser.

Good, you have rectified your past mistakes.  In the future, please make sure that all music that you purchase, rip, or otherwise acquire is in MP3 format, and you will avoid this problem.
I am unable to export only the MP3 songs to the SD card.  Can anyone help?
Put your Music library in Songs View, and look at the Kind column.  (If you don't have a Kind column, enable it via View > Show View Options.)  Any song with a Kind of MPEG audio file is an MP3.

  • IPhoto '08-How can I obtain unedited photo?

I have a photo I edited a long time ago using GIMP. I put an arrow in the photo. I can't find the original photo without the arrow although when I view the picture in iPhoto, it shows it without the arrow. It's only when I click on it and bring it to full size that it shows the arrow. Can I still obtain the unedited version? The Photo Info does not indicate that it was modified so I'm confused that when I view the full size image, it is modified ith the arrow.

The following is for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements but GIMP is similar enought to PS that the following should be of help to you:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 displays only raw photos correctly.  If I correct redeye or touch up a photo I get white boxes over the eyes(if correcting redeye) or the thumbnail and photo turns mostly white. Note: I have an NVIDIA card.

Do you remember the days when Apple wrote robust code ?  The latest updates have not been great.
Maybe the programers are outsourced to a foriegn country now or Noobs out of school ?
It looks like someone isn't paying attention to the editing layer... I write code.  and when you edit an image you store the update in another layer. The method enables you to easily undo edits.   I "upgraded" to 10.9.1 and was forced to update iPhoto.    After I uploaded photos from my camera I noticed redeye reduction results in just white squares over the eyes. I also noticed issues if I attempt any photo edit funcition in iPhoto.
This means to me that iPhoto 's editor is saving video from the wrong memory location.
I have a NVIDIA card because I write CUDA applications on my Mac.  An NVIDIA card enables me to write CUDA and OpenCL apps.
Here's what happens if I attempt to straighten an image:

Here's  what happens if I attempt to use the Redeye reduction tool:
As you can see Mavericks may have made some improvements but overall it does not get the job done as it used to.
I am willing to bet  that your graphics code has devolved into ATI centric code.
I booted into macos 7.5.1 and the issue with the same hardware older operating system and apps works fine.    I just wish I never deleted my 10.6.8 install.  10.6.8 was the most stable on the MacPro.   Everything worked.     From 10.7 up I've noticed a decline in dependability.
Can you please fix this or design a work around ?    Switching over to an ATI graphics card is NOT a good answer.
Also I noticed Cinebench R15 benchmarks are higher in 7.5.1 verses 10.9.1

Where in that other topic is the manufacturer of the graphic card or even a graphic card mentioned.?  You may have known what kind of card you had but we're not mind readers.
Since it appears to be a incompatibility between that particular card, Mavericks and iPhoto you should keep telling Apple about it by contacting them via

  • Export 100% quality photos with metadata?

I've spent hours searching the web and this forum but can't figure out how to do this.
    SUMMARY:
How do I export a set of photos from iPhoto '09 while preserving the photo's image quality and its metadata? I want a 100% identical copy of the photo to be exported.
    DETAILS:
I've noticed throughout this forum that when people ask how to move their photos to another computer or to use with a different photo tool, whilst preserving metadata, the normal answer is to use File-->Export. The problem, I'm finding, is that you don't get an exact copy of the photo that's in iPhoto ––OR–– you don't get the metadata included with the export, depending on which export choices you make.
    1. If you choose to Export the photo(s) in Current or Original, then you get a 100% quality photo but you don't get all the metadata: Location, Keywords, Title. (You do get the original metadata that was put there by your digicam or scanner prior to importing into iPhoto, however.)
    2. If you just drag the photo(s) out of the iPhoto window, you get an identical copy of the original without the extended metadata, as in the previous method.
    3. If you choose to Export the photo(s) in JPEG, then you can include the Location, Keyword, and Title metadata. However, the exported photo is not the same size as the original.
    - JPEG Quality: High results in photos that are about 1/2 the size of the original.
    - JPEG Quality: Maximum results in photos that are about TWICE the size of the original.
I don't really understand what it means to take a 2 MB JPEG iPhoto original from my digicam and export it in Maximum resulting in a 4 MB JPEG copy. All that extra size surely cannot be worth anything, as the best you can get is what was in the original. So you're doubling the size for no benefit. Actually, it seems likely that the copy is WORSE than the original because of lossy file-format conversion errors, similar to why it's a bad idea to convert a 128kbs AAC song to a 128kbs MP3 song in iTunes, or make a copy of a cassette tape (for those of you old enough to remember analog).
The Crux Dilemma: It appears that I can EITHER
    1. export a 100% identical copy of my photo but lose my extended metadata,
    2. export a modified (either 1/2- or Double-size) JPEG copy that has all the metadata.
This is frustrating me. My friends and I took hundreds of pictures. I've imported them into iPhoto, edited them, Keyword tagged them, GeoTagged them, and now I want to give them their 100%-quality copies of the photos, and I can't figure out how to do it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

Terence, thank you for your quick reply!
You basically confirmed what I found out by trial-and-error.
Unfortunately, I think the news is bad. Here's why:
A typical picture in my iPhoto library, a JPEG taken by a compact digicam, is 1.8 MB. Let's compare that to the sizes of the same picture when exported using the various options:
1.8 MB - Current or Original; - metadata not included.
11.4 MB - TIFF - lossless, all metadata included
3.1 MB - JPEG Maximum - lossy but all metadata included
0.7 MB - JPEG High - lossy but all metadata included
You wrote "For my money the best bet is the tiff". I know tiff's are the highest quality format (non-lossy), but, in my case anyway, they're 6.3 X larger.
Is it really true that the only way to move my photos out of iPhoto while preserving 100% of the quality and all the extended metadata is to increase the size of my photos over 6 times? Really?
That seems a bit ridiculous. Consider a library of 10,000 photos averaging 2 MB each (which is on the small side these days). That library would be at least 20 GB (not really considering all the additional space used by thumbnails, dupes, etc). But if I want to export all those photos in a lossless way while preserving metadata, the size will jump to over 126 GB!!
Many of us have Macs with hard drives large enough to easily handle a 20GB iPhoto library, but if that library suddenly exported itself into a 126 GB monster, that would challenge many of our hard drives.
Is there really no other way?

  • Export only of developped pictures

Hi, I am a beginner in Lightroom 4.3.
I loaded some folders with my pictures. In Lightroom I developed some of it, others I did not.
Now I want to export only those pictures which I developed. I know, I can manually select at the bottom line all pictures showing a  +/- sign and the export them. This is quite a lot of work with my 800 pictures.
Is it possible to tell Lightroom that it just selects and exports the developed pictures?

Ahhhh, I was scratching my head over that one (trying to provide answer).
My thought was to simply filter on the appropriate attribute or metadata, but a criterion of "has adjustments" is not available for filtering (though it is for Smart Collections). I wonder why Lightroom's filter criteria aren't the same as for Smart Collections?   An oversight?

  • Export only selected objects of a drawing

    Hello,
I want to export only some objects of a drawing to png. Therefore I select them via click + Shift. I used CorelDraw before and there i can select, in the export window, "Only marked objects" (don't know the exact English term). Is there a comparable option to Corel?
    Thanks,
    Slodomir

off the top of my head i don't know a way of doing this automatically...maybe i just don't know of it...
    My work around would be:
    unlock everything
    select your objects
    invert your selection
    hide the now selected objects
    export...
bit of a work around but you could do an action to speed it up if you've got a few to do.
    hope that helps

  • Transfer Only iPhone Photo Library to New iPhone

I have a new iPhone 6 and I want to transfer only my photo library from my old iPhone 5. I don't want to do a restore with my new iPhone because it will copy everything from my old phone. Is there a way I can copy over just the photo library from my old phone to the new?

For photos taken with the iPhone or saved from emails/websites etc then see this page
For photos that were originally synced from a computer then there are third-party iPhone/iPad apps such as Simple Transfer (which has a free lite version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer) which can be used to copy photos off your device via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the device, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer. Do you not have a backup copy on, for example, an external drive that you can copy onto the other computer ?
