IPhoto treats thumb drive as a camera!

Ever since my latest iPhoto update (to version 5.0.4), iPhoto automatically loads whenever my thumb drive (flash drive?) is connected. iPhoto sends the message "There are no items to import", as if it thinks my thumb drive is a camera.
This is driving me nuts, since I keep my thumb drive connected to my iMac at all times (as a kind of backup); as a result, every time I boot up my iMac, iPhoto comes on.
How do I keep it from doing that? Or is this just something Apple has done in the latest iPhoto update, and which they will (hopefully!) fix in the next one?

Another option is to reformate it to OS X Extended (journaled). If you expect to use it with the dark side, i.e. a PC computer, then you'll need to leave it as it is and follow Terences' suggestion.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I "save as" image in iPhoto to thumb drive?

I am most comfortable on my PC, so let me ask this question this way:  How can I "save as" an image in iPhoto to a thumb drive?
I have 50-plus photos I want to transfer from the iPhoto library to my thumb drive.  But when I try to export an image it does not allow me to select the thumb drive as an option, even though the little thumb drive is stuck in the iMac's rear just fine.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    THis is iMarkM again.
when I drag an image from iPhoto file to icon for my thumb drive, sometimes the image drops into thumb drive, other times nothing happens.  What's the best way to drag and drop without creating a clutter of thumbnail images on the computer screen surrounding or on top of the icon for the thumb drive?

  • I have a MacPro that for some reason FCPX briefly "sees" my Raid drives then acts like the Events there don't exist. Seems like it wants to treat that drive like a "camera". Any ideas..help.. It sees the Main drive no problem.

I am having a problem with FCPX seeing my Raid drive as a Drive and not as a Camera.. Don't know what I might have done to change things..it was working fine and other than backing things up to external harddrive..not sure what happened. I reinstalled FCPx, checked the disk permissions and verified it with the disk utilities. any suggestions?

  • SanDisk Cruzer 8Gb Thumb Drive treated as camera - iPhoto launch...

    Hello all.
Recently got a new SanDisk Cruzer 8Gb Thumb Drive, usually these drives are pre-formatted to run on both Win PC and Macs.
When I plug the drive into my iMac at home or my MacBook, iPhoto will launch, regardless if I have files in it... normally I would have jpeg picture files, and once in a while, some movie files. All these times, iPhoto will launch, treating it like a camera.
The interesting thing is when I launch Image Capture, inside the thumb drive info, it is listed as a camera!
So how do I or how can I go about it changing the thumb drive's "identity" from a camera to a thumb/flash drive?
    Thanks and cheers

So how do I or how can I go about it changing the thumb drive's "identity" from a camera to a thumb/flash drive?
Reformat it to something different using Disk Utility. The reason iPhoto/Image Capture is making the mistake is because it's the same format as a camera.
    Or
iPhoto -> Preferences -> General -> Connecting Camera Opens... and choose 'No Application' from the drop down. This way nothing will happen when you connect the card unless you manually launch iPhoto or Image Capture.

  • Updated iPhoto last night...Now, can't copy/paste or drag/drop images to folders/thumb drives outside of iPhoto

As the title states, I updated iPhoto last night as per suggestion from the App store.
It installed, and I went back to work using it. Within a few minutes, iPhoto crashed. I sent the report to Apple.
When i opened iPhoto back up, it said it found inconsistencies and needed to repair. so i let it repair, which took a while...when it was done, i went back to work editing some photos from a recent shoot. It almost crashed again while i was working and then it came out of it. Anyways, i shut down everything after a bit of work and all was good in the world...until this morning.
I went to get the images out of iPhoto and onto a thumb drive, but it wouldn't let me. I selected 50 images, copied them, and went to paste in the folder on the thumb drive...but it only pasted 10 of the 50 images. so i tried dragging them all and dropping them into the folder. nothing happened. it has done this to me once before, and when it did, i restarted and tried again and it worked...this time, i restarted and tried again and it kept doing the same thing. so i shut it down, did a cold boot, got everything back up, and tried again...still doing the same thing.
It seems like every time i do an upgrade to iPhoto it causes some kind of problem. it never crashed on me until i did the first update, and since then the stability has been a real issue.
So anyways, i didn't have a lot of time this morning before i had to go to work to try to figure this out, BUT, i did notice that it would allow me to drag and drop 1 image at a time...and that would save to the folder i selected...but i don't have time to do 1 image at a time...EVER! i am a photographer and need to drag and drop hundreds of images at a time.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks!
    Joe

    Thanks for the response, Larry!
I will try that when I get home and see if it works. Will update the thread with the results then.
I hope it works as you described, but it is/was so much easier to just be able to select the photos in iPhoto and drag/drop them directly into the folder on the thumb drive...it's odd it doesn't work anymore...?

  • Thumb drive will not accept duplicate numbers altho pics are different from iPhoto. Can numbers/labels be changed?

iPhoto 11, vers. 9.2.3 - Photos downloaded from my camera have a set of numbers which are repeated with each download posing a problem when trying to place them on a CD or thumb drive as the duplicate numbers are not accepted. I have well 2500 photos and possibly dozens of duplicate numbers. I thought I could simply modify the name of each photo but that does not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

    Two simple solutions
1 - export to different desktop folders on the desktop and then drag those folders to the thumb drive - duplicate file names in different folders are fine (you can not have duplicates in the same folder)
2 - export to a desktop folder using the sequential file name option - Exporting From iPhoto - and drag that folder to the Thumb drive

  • Exporting Raw files from iPhoto to a thumb drive

I shot some photos in camera Raw with my Canon 40D and uploaded them to iPhoto. When I dragged copies of the Raw image file to the desktop they were converted to Jpeg. When I tried dragging them directly from iPhoto to a thumb drive, the same thing happened -- they got automatically converted from Raw to Jpeg.
How can I move Raw files to the desktop or a thumb drive and keep them Raw?
    Thanks
    Greg

Yes, iPhoto has a RAW converter, it's the same one Aperture uses but with less options. The options are available under the Adjust button in Editing Mode
    2. If I shoot in Raw and import into iPhoto then convert to, say, TIFF, does iPhoto have two image files, one RAW, one TIFF?
Yes because iPhoto always preserves your Original file, no matter what. So, if you save it as a jpeg you also have two image files...

  • How do I transfer an iphoto library from a guest login to either another login or a thumb drive?

I am letting a friend use my computer as a surrogate for the time being to backup her phone and photos. I had never used the guest login before and didn't realize that all the files would be lost at logout. I haven't logged out yet but I need help trying to get the iphoto library onto a thumb drive. If at all possible I would like to get the backup from itunes as well.
I have already copied all of the photos out of iphoto but that doesn't save the time, date and location of them. I cannot access the folder to move the iphoto library because of it being in the guest login. I have already deleted the photos off of the phone so that is a no go.
I've been trying to search for an answer but haven't had any luck yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Export them

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • How to load pictures from iPhoto to a thumb drive in the order taken

Im trying to give a copy of pictuces I took on vacation with some friends and want to give them a copy. But every time I load them on a thumb drive they are in a different order when loaded back onto there computer? How do I fix this.

    Once the photos are out of iPhoto they will be viewed by the Finder sorted by alphanumerically  name or chronologically by date depending on how the view is setup for the Finder. So here's how to get what you want;
1 - assemble the photos in an album named for the vacation and sort manually.
2 - select the album and use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.
3 - Set Kind = Original (if you want the original unedited version) or Currnet (if you want the edited version).
4 - select File Name = Album name with number:
5 - this will give you the files named as Album-01.jpg, Album-02.jpg, etc which will be sorted in that order in the Finder.

  • Is iPhoto and iMovie and garage band on Lion reinstall thumb drive from Apple??

Is iphoto and imovie and garage Band On the Os x Lion reinstall thumb Drive Sold By Apple???

No.  iLife is a separate product that is bundled with the purchase of a new Mac, not the purchase of a new OS.
So, anyone with an older Mac would have pay for an upgrade to iLife in addition to paying for an upgrade to Lion.
On a positive note, you can now upgrade separate components in the App Store (i.e. iPhoto), instead of paying for the complete iLife suite

  • My iPad will accept downloaded images from my camera, but will not allow me to move the images to a thumb drive, with the message that those devices require too much power for the iPad.

Using an older, second-issue iPad, I can download images into it from my camera. I cannot move them out of the iPad into a thumb drive. The message I receive is that the thumb drives require too much energy to make the transfer. What can I do?

Thats how its designed. in order to export your images or videos, the best method might be by connecting the iPad to your computer, or directly to the thumb drive connected to your computer, not to the iPad. Then is as simple as drag and drop. The other method could be sending them by email or uploading via a cloud service but that will take more time do get it done.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive.  Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  Can someone please help?

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.
