IPhoto Trouble - Importing - iLife 08

First I apologize in advance if this question has been answered previously, but I recently update to ilife08 and iPhoto wasn't my main source for organizing my pictures. But I think it's great and I "want" to use it but I'm running into a few issues.
For example, recently I thought that the best way to solve one of my problems was to buy an external drive where all my photos would be kept. I have over 10000 photos. My macbook is only 60 gigs. So last night I imported them all into iphoto without making copies of them. This morning I saw that they are all out wack. I expected the import to be seemlessly. I have all my photos organized by "events" (ie birthdays, get to gethers, holidays, family, etc.) so I expected the "events" to be organized this way. Instead I feel like none of my folder names transferred over.
In the past when I uploaded to Iphoto 6, at least the "folder names" were in the library as "rolls" I just want to understand how iPhoto works and how I can use it so that my pictures are organized great. I just feel stuck and that I can't even get into first gear. Can anyone share some light?
Further more... now I want to do it all over again. So how do I erase what I did and start all over. do I have to uninstall iLife and reinstall it? I'm new to the "mac" world so I'm still trying to figure out how the OS X works.
Please help.
Thanks

It's pretty easy to do over again. Just go to the picture folder under your Home and drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Next time you launch iPhoto it will create a new library with nothing in it. Then you can re-import the old library from the external hard drive.
My understanding is that the events function works solely off the date created of each photo. It doesn't consider any previous organization that you may have done.
You basically have to go thru and rename each event. It's easy but can be time consuming.

  • Having trouble importing select pictures from a cd to my iphoto library

I am having trouble importing (and viewing) my vacation photos from a cd to my iphoto library. Some of the photos I can view in finder, but when i click on the rest, I get a message that says "Item xxxx.jpg is used by mac os x and cannot be opened". When I tried to import the photos to my library... the ones I could view imported no problem, the ones I couldn't view will not import and I get a message saying "unreadable files: the following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)". I am just sick that I cannot find these photos!!! =( especially since I had them on iphoto before I cleaned out my computer (so I've had them in my library before). Any ideas? I am in desperate need of help! =(
P.S. When I try to move the pictures to my desktop, I get a notice that says, "you may need to enter the name and pasword for the administrator on this computer to change the item named xxxx.jpg"... when I click continue, another message pops up and says, "the item xxx.jpg contains one or more busy items that cannot be changed"

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What do you have set in the System/CDs and DVDs preferences to do when a disk is inserted? If the option is not set to the Finder do so and see if that will make any difference.
Otherwise boot into Safe Mode and see if you can copy the files from the CD to a folder on the Desktop. Boot back into your normal account and see if you can import. Or import while still in the Safe Mode.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Having trouble importing photos from Panasonic Lumix cameras. No error message 1 just has spinning ball, other can import using menu but ends with spinning ball. using 9.1.5 Mac OSX10.6.8. Have to restart to access iphoto

Hi I am trying to import photos into iPhoto using two Panasonic cameras both Lumix (DMC TZ3 and DMC FZ30). Worked in the past no problem, I upgrade system when prompted and am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attach cable from camera to Mac with the DMC TZ3 I get the spinning ball and nothing else and have to force quite and restart to access iphoto again without the spinning ball, with the DMC FZ30, when I plus in the cable I get an icon on the desktop and can go into iphoto and import the photos that way.  When the photos have been imported I get the spinning ball again and have to restart the Mac to access iphoto without the spinning ball.  Photos do import though.
Can anyone help, a really stupid, non-techie person who has no idea what she is doing, please?
    Thank you

    Try use a different cable.

  • Trouble importing from Photoshop CS2

I'm have trouble importing my photoshop files to iphoto, the pictures come in black, and when I open them they are inverted?
    Any help out there?

What color space are the pics? iPhoto supports RGB, if they are another - such as CMYK or GrayScale this will cause problems.

  • Trouble importing from canon t4i into imove

So I have a canon t4i and I've been having trouble importing my videos from my memory card to imovie, and iphoto wont even let me upload it. I tried converting it to AVI (which took a few hours) and It's still not doing anything. I don't know what to do and it's really frustrating.

    Hello Samantha3232,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Some video clips may not import into iMovie when using the Camera Import window
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4485
From the File menu, choose Import > Movies.
In the dialog that appears, select your camera from the sidebar.
Locate and select the video clips on your camera that you would like to import.
    Click the Import button.
    Best of luck,

  • Fuji Finepix iPhoto movie import problems

iPhoto won't let me import any movies from my Fuji Finepix camera that's over two/three minutes long. I've plugged my camera into a friend PC and it imported the movie with out any problems. There's no problems with importing photos at all, or movies under two minutes. It just doesn't recognize movies over 2 minutes.
I have plenty of space on my HD to accommodate these movies.
    I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6
any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    thx

    Hi.
I have had the same problem with iPhoto 6 not importing my longer video clips. I do use a card reader. When iPhoto won't import a movie, the workaround is to use Image Capture. Select "Download Some" and switch the window to List view to preview the files on the card. Select the movies and upload to a Desktop folder. Ignore the blue progress meter - it seems to go from 0 to 100% with no indication of actual progress. It can take several minutes, but I've learned to be patient and the clips will eventually appear on the Desktop. Once there, iPhoto has had no trouble importing them into the Library.
    Regards.

I am a brand new iMac user and am having trouble importing some of my photos into my new computer.
    Here is my dilemma:
    * All of my pics are jpgs that were shot using a sony DSC-W50 digital camera.
    * All were backed up on my exteral harddrive from my old Sony PC.
    * I loaded all of them onto my new iMac into the "Photos" area
    * When I try to import them to the iPhoto library, I get a message that either says "already in the iPhoto library" or 'unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data"
    * I can open all of the photos that I get this error msg on in other photo programs so I know the files are photos and are good.

iPhoto is not an image viewer, it's a Database with built-in image viewer, lightweight editing and version control, and like any database, data needs to be imported. However, iPhoto will not import from the iPhoto Library Folder.
So, move the photos to the Desktop and then import them from there.
    Here's what happens next:
iPhoto will make a copy of them in the iPhoto Library Folder. There they will be put into the Originals Folder. Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
If you need any more asistance post more.
    Regards

  • Trouble importing photos previously deleted from Elements Organizer

I am having trouble importing photos from iPhoto into Photoshop Elements Organizer. When I try to import, it says "Nothing was imported. The files or folders selected to import did not contain any supported file types or the files are already in this catalog." The photos I want to import, I had previously deleted from the Organizer, so I think they are "already in this catalog" but I don't know how to find them.

How are you attempting to do this? Step by step, what are you doing?

  • Trouble importing my photos

    Hi everyone,
I am having trouble importing my photos. I am doing at as usually do, I insert the memory card on my Mac and then I hit import photos. Once those are imported I am usually able to start developing them, however, this time when I go to edit them, it displays a sign saying "file not found". I have encountered this before when I have moved the photos from their original location and then an interrogation sign shows in the folder. This time is different though because it happens right after import and I know for a fact that I have not modified the location of the folder. I have also tried to right click and hit update folder location and that does not work. I have also tried importing the photos to my computer first on a folder, and then importing them from there to lightroom, but that is not working either. Please help me. I really need to edit these. Thank you so much!

  • Trouble importing from p3 after office install

Has anyone else had trouble importing photos from digital camera after installing Office for Mac 2011? Now iPhoto won't recognize my files, and what came up in the import folder were about 160 icky clip art icons, which I quickly deleted.  If there's a fix (other than uninstalling software), please advise.

Terence, hi.  I'm doing what I had done previously (successfully), plugging in my Nikon digital camera via the USB port and turning on the camera.  I checked preferences and it's set to connect the camera in iPhoto.

  • Trouble installing ilife '11

I've had some trouble with iLife '11 tonight, I tried putting int he disk and installing it, and it goes through the entire process fine, but when its finally done, it does not open any of the new programs, and I have searched for hours in spotlight and finder (and also multiple attempts at reinstallation) with no '11 programs to be found. does anybody have any tips for installation or how to bring up my new programs? thank you

Just had the same problems as you have. I'm not an expert, but I found the solution. When I installed iLife '11, my iPhoto icon asked for "update", but could not do any update, could not open that program and my 9000 photo's were gone. Just went to Spotlight, a search to iPhoto and clicked on iPhoto Library Manager. Than click op "relaunch iPhoto" and it starts updating immediately. Later I checked info and saw the icon of iLife "11. Hope it will work for you too.

  • TemporaryItems & Trouble Importing

I'm having trouble importing photos into Iphoto when saving from the internet. I think the trouble is something to do with the 'TemporaryItems' folder where everything I try and save seems to go (I'm not sure if this is what usually happens anyway).
I import one photo fine, then try another and it seems to think that it's a duplicate of everything else I have saved, although it's not the same, I can do this and have my two different photos, but I then get a message about 'Unreadable' files not being able to be added, basically everything else in the TemporaryItems folder.
I've tried emptying TemporaryItems, deleting all the problem files but nothing is working.
    Any ideas?

I drag photos in from Firefox. I imported photos from a camera not long before that and didn't have any trouble. It just seems to duplicate/have trouble with random images from the net.

  • How to prevent iPhoto from importing automatically

There are times I want to load photos onto my computer but do not want iPhoto to import them.
How can I prevent iPhoto from importing photos automatically when photos are loaded onto my computer?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Matt,
That's quite a full trash can. To clarify, we're talking about the iPhoto Trash at the bottom of the Source Pane (left column) and not the regular Finder trash can that lives on your Desktop, right? If there are photos you wish to save in the iPhoto trash, drag them to the word Library at the top of the Source Pane and they will be restored to the library. When you're ready you can try to empty the trash: from the menu bar choose iPhoto > Empty trash. However, you may have trouble with so many files at once. If the trash won't empty you'll have to move the files back to the library and delete them in smaller batches (say 500) until they're all gone.
Where was the iPhoto library recovered photos folder? Did you see it in the Source Pane of the iPhoto window, or was it inside the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder?
    Regards.
