IPhoto won't open after clean install followed by Time Machine restoration of data.

Hello.
I've just completed a clean install of OS X Yosemite followed by a restoration of my data from a Time Machine backup on my Mid 2010 iMac i3 3.2GHz.
Since the install iPhoto will no longer open. The icon in the dock bounces for a short while and then I receive the following error: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. It then shows problem details and system configuration, the top part of which I post below:
Process:               iPhoto [466]

I then get a long list of binary image data which I haven't posted here (but can if required).
I believe the version of iPhoto I have is 9.6 as that update was installed a short while before I did the clean install of the OS.
I would try reinstalling the iPhoto again but cannot see a way to uninstall or to download again from the app store.
Has anybody seen this behaviour before and/or know of a fix or workaround so I can get my iPhoto program working again please?
Many thanks for your time.
Alex

Looking at that report I would reinstall iPhoto as a first step:
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • IPhoto won't open after new install and restore of back-up

    Hi guys
My hard drive just died (for the second time in 6 months!) so I have just gotten the computer back with a new drive. I did a new install of Tiger from my original install CDs, did the download thing to get all the updates, and ran a "restore" from my external drive using iBackup (http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup//index.html) to restore all my previous system settings, documents, etc. So far this seems to have worked well, a couple of 3rd party applications didn't re-install - specifically Neo Office and WiFind - but I was able to manually install those and everything seems to be working fine.
Except iPhoto. It won't open. When I click the dock icon it bounces once and does nothing. No little arrow under it or anything. Nothing at all happens when I click the icon in Finder (in the Applications folder). When I searched it in spotlight it told me there was a file called iphoto.crash.log, so I went and had a look at that hoping it would tell me the problem, but I don't understand it. I'm not particularly good at the behind the scenes stuff with computers.
Wondering what I should do now - if someone can perhaps interpret the log file and find the issue if that would help, or if I should uninstall and re-install iPhoto by itself (and if so, how?), or if there is something else that may be causing the issue. I noticed there are a few files relating to it when I search with spotlight but I don't know which of them might be relevant. I could post a screenshot if that is allowed, or post the log file if it would help?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help!
    Regards,
    Chloë

    400 Updates???
Did you Repair Permissions before & after each one?
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Issues, iphoto won't open after archive install.

Hi there, got issues here. Previously I had accidently deleted a very important file in private/var/ and had to do a archive install. The shop swapped out my original 500 GB and put in a 2 TB. Great, turned it on, everything looks good. However, couple things not going so well. My pro apps aren't working but thats in another thread and now, I went to open iphoto and it won't open, says:

No I do have a back up Its kinda long to explain but last a little over a week ago, i delete a important file in my private/var folder and screwed up my computer. Worst part was I didn't run time machine for almost a month that way all my pics that I did bring on weren't backup up. i know this sounds careless but normally does happen like this. Anyway I had to take my imac into to get it fixed and the only way to do it without losing all my data was to do an archive and install and of course my drive was full so they had to swap it out and they put in a 2 TB and ya, so now I am where I am at. Everything is here but got pro app and iphoto issues. I guess worst case scenario if something does go wrong on the install I kinda do have a back up as the old drive can be put into a enclosure and used as a HD but I guess it is a bootable drive so I don't know if it would mount properly. Thanks for you help though/ Really Appreciate it.

  • IPhoto won't open after fresh instal of Lion!

I recently erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Lion as I am giving my MacBook Pro to my brother as a Xmas present. I used a USB pen to reinstall Lion. I used my time MAchine backup to bring over iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband. Everything works apart from iPhoto. It says "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Thing is iLife came bundled on my Mac and i did not have to buy it from the App Store. Everything is up to date but it just won;t open. Can anyone help explain why this maybe and help me fix the problem?
    Thanks

Try holding down the Command + Option keys then launch iPhoto.
Select:   Repair the iPhoto Library Data base then click Rebuild.

  • Permission issues after Snow Leopard clean install, Migration Assistant+Time Machine restore.

    Hello, here's the situation.
I've done a clean install, for various reasons, I've got backups including one done just before the clean install. Following directions somewhere else I set up a user account called "test" just for the purposes of reimporting PART of my old system, since one of the reasons I did the clean install was to clean up my system (get rid of all those little ghosts of old programs, the old programs themselves, files and settings I not longer want etc.) so I didn't want to just import the whole thing. So I imported just the user account and a few folders such as music and photos that I knew I wanted back on. Then I restarted so that it would log back into my old user account that's been restored using Migration assistant. So far so good. I enter time machine and start restoring Applicatons, their associated support files, a few preference panes, some other files and folders I want back on, so and and so forth. Then I enter my old home folder and see that many of the subfolders I don't have access to, I check their permissions with Get Info and see that read/write access has been granted to my test account, which is ridiculous since it didn't exist when they were backed up. Some searching reveals that on the first Time Machine back-up after a restore like this it should as at the start whether I want to inherit he old backups, so I tell Time machine to do a backup, figure that it shouldn't take much, seeing as there's nothing new, and I've put it all in the same place as in the backup. It doen't give me any such prompt, instead just starts indexing/preparing hundreds of thousands of files, and tells me that the backup should take about 135 gb of space. I stop the backup, give up on working this out myself, and come here. Help?
    Of note
The "harddrive" (it's a partition, I've got Windows on the other part) is not named the same as it was in the backups, would this affect it?

    I'm not familiar with Lightroom.
Where is the "Lightroom 2 catalog" folder in the second message, and what are it's permissions?
Note that +Repair Permissions+ only repairs permissions on files installed by OSX or certain Apple apps, and you should use the version of Disk Utility that's on your OSX volume, not your Install disc. See: [About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452].

  • How to get iPhoto and iTunes to a clean installed Yosemite from Time Machine

I wiped the Hard Drive and clean installed to OS X Yosemite. For Some reason, some of my Time Machine back ups disappeared or got deleted and it wasn't even full. I had back ups from 2011 and now it only starts from 2013 of June.
Next....when I try to restore my other apps(like iPhoto and my iTunes) I doesn't give that warp space effect in the background. It gives me the window layer effect but I just see the same mountain background on the desktop as the default Yosemite(unless thats how its suppose to look like that?) I can't restore using Time Machine because the little lines at the right are red (see screen shot) and it won't let me restore, and if i go back by using the arrows, if freezes. So,
I don't know how to install the old iTunes and iPhoto on my existing clean installed Yosemite from my Time Machine.
    Can someone help me?

@ LarryHN Thank you ver much for you help I understand now that you just can't copy over the old library(got it)
I had the latest version of iPhoto before I cleaned installed.
The link you gave me was most informative and I want to thank you. But still problems arrive.
This came up and I don't know which one to pick

  • IPhoto won't open after reinstalling

iPhoto won't open after installing "bundled software only" from the Leopard cd. The thing is that I already had everything installed , I installed the bundled software thinking that it would install the bootcamp in my mac (I know , I'm stupid...It is because I never had a mac..
    What shoud I do?
PS: other program are not working either , iWork and Garage Band.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPhoto won't open after iLife update

iPhoto won't open after iLife update.  How get iPhoto to funtion again?

What version of iPhoto? What happens when you try?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto won't open after Archive and Install

Recently, my macbook won't boot up so I had to perform and Archive and Install. Now iPhoto won't open and therefore, I have no access to iPhoto Library. Does anyone know why this is happening? I don't have iLife '08 with me and my restore CDs would have the previous version of iPhoto on it. Would it be impossible to revert to an older version of iPhoto? If I delete the Previous Systems folder, will it affect this problem more (as I have only 5 gb of free space)? (Btw, I am update to date on Tiger updates)
    Thanks,

My guess is that there is part of the iLife install in the Previous System Folder and you're going to need to re-install iLife 08.
Yes you can re-install v6 (or whatever is on your System Restore disks) but v6 will not open an iPhoto 08 library. You would need to create a new v6 library and that would entail losing all your edited versions, albums, books, keywords etc.

  • Iphoto won't open after changing from os10.5 to os10.4

    hello there
last night i reinstalled os10.4. i have been running leopard, but a program that i want to use is not yet compatible with it.
after installing it, it put all of my documents/files in a folder called 'previous system' on my hard drive. i then moved all the files back to their 'proper' folders (i.e. itunes, documents etc)
i moved the iphoto library and put it in my 'pictures' folder, but for some reason now iphoto won't open..it just bounces once in the dock and then nothing happens....
can anyone help? i've got some really precious photos in my library, and i'd be really gutted if i have lost them...
