Ipod 16g 2nd gen. had the waiting circle running for ages. the unit got hot. i reset it and the circumstances did not change. i also did a dfu mode. which stopped the spinning circle, but now the ipod is stuck on the apple. slide to unlock is stuck now.

i performed a reset twice as well as a brand new reset to factory settings. I still got the spinning circle.
i also did a DFU. brought me to the apple sign, followed by a spinning circle and a 'slide to unlock' page that will not slide.
please advise.

Likely a batter problem since high temperatures destroy a battery. I wold make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store to see what they say. It is free except for your time.

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

16g 2nd gen discontinued?

I went on to the Apple Store site and noticed that there the 16g 2nd gen iPod Touch is not offered, just 8g, 32g & 64g.
Have they been discontinued or will they come out with a 3rd gen model?

When I talked to an Apple telesales person on the 10th I was told that the 16 gb was discontinued.
Technically, if someone bought a 16 gb on the 8th before the 3rd gens were announced then they would have paid the same amount that the new 32 gb costs so they would not be paying "more" for a 32 gb. They would be getting double capacity for the same price. I honestly thought if they were going to get rid of one of the models it would have been the 8gb model...

No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.
