IPod 4th gen in recovery mode and will not restore

My iPod 4th Gen has gone in to recovery mode and it used to say plug in to iTunes, so I do and the computer says it has detected that an iPod needs to be restored so I try and restore it, it starts but when it says restoring iPod the iPod disconnects from the laptop and an error comes up saying the restore can not be completed error 40. I have tried it on two other computers including an apple mac book and still no luck. I've tried searching the Internet for answers but nothing has helped my iPod wont even turn on anymore. I am currently in Afghan and i brought the iPod to use out here i had it 2 weeks and it hasn't worked since and I can not call Apple. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • My 4th generation ipod touch is in recovery mode and will not restore

Everytime i try to restore my ipod it loads until there is a little bit left to load and then shuts off and itunes says that there is an unknown error (9) and can not restore. Does anyone know what that means and/or what i can do?

Hi @rchangel - Thanks for the ideas...
Yes - it won't let you install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine.
I've had a cursory look at the SP1 release notes, and couldn't spot anything vital - what critical stuff do you know of in SP1?
I don't want to have to go through all the pain of setting up VM's, reinstalling iTunes, getting all my album art back in etc. (though I could, as I do have Win7 pro). I've also heard that running iTunes in Windows 7 compatibility mode might help. Can anyone confirm whether that actually works?
I think it's in Apple's gift to fix this issue, given that they say that they support Windows 7. So far I've had no feedback from a mail I sent to Apple, and the number of users reporting this problem keeps going up and up.
I want Apple to recognise that there is a problem, and then I want them to fix it.

  • HT201210 iPhone 4 stuck in recovery mode and will not restore.

My iPhone 4 randomly turned off a few days ago and wouldnt turn back on. I plugged it into iTunes which said it was in recovery mode but will not restore as error 1600 keeps propping up. Someone please help, I have tried lots of ways but none are working.

Placing your device into recovery (DFU) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • IOS 7 put my phone in recovery mode and will not restore

After updating to iOS 7, my iphone went into recovery mode and everytime I try and restore it, it errors out with an error code 9.  I have tried 2 different cords and 2 different computers and it will not restore.  HELP    Not sure what to do from here and the nearest Apple store is 200 miles away.

    Hi all,
Bit of background so I don't waste anyone's time:
IPhone 4s, itunes 11.1 (both on computer and iphone)
I too am stuck in this recovery loop. I've read all over the community and have tried the suggestions:
I put my phone in DFU mode & also recovery mode (a.e. hold home/sleep button down for 10 seconds, etc., etc., etc.) and tried restoring this way 10 different times, as some posts say it sometimes works after the 4-5 try but still no results.
On my Iphone Screen the apple logo appears and the status bar below it gets stuck about 2/3 of the way, then I get the following error message, "could not restore because of unknown error (1)".
I set up an appt. at the apple store for tomorrow, but holy sh*t what a fiasco!
    Any suggestions?

  • Iphone 5C stuck in Recovery Mode and will not restore

Hi there, iv'e come across what seems to be quite a common problem at the moment.
I tried to update my 5C to the latest firmware this morning and apparently something went wrong. The update was fine up until about 3/4 way through and then i recived an error message, error (12) to be specific, It now seems to be completely stuck in Recovery Mode as it continues to do the same thing when i try to restore it. Iv'e had previous iphones thta have went into Recovery mode but i easly got past this issue. Nothing i do seems to be helping it, iv'e tried restoring it about 10 times and the same error comes up every time. Iv'e uninstalled and re installed Itunes and still nothing.
other than taking it to the apple store does anyone have any advice?
(Windows Fire Wall is also turned off)
    Thank you!

FIRST, edit your hosts file (which was corrupted by the jailbreak process) and remove any references to gs.apple.com; delete the whole lines and save the file. If you don't know how to do this you will have to get help, and it shows that jailbreaking was a bigger mistake than you thought.
Next, connect to a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub and disconnect all USB devices that consume power or bandwidth (like USB drives).
Put it into DFU mode to restore. With the phone disconnected hold HOME and SLEEP until a black screen appears. Immediately release SLEEP and continue holding HOME. While holding connect to iTunes and continue holding. After a while (perhaps several minutes) iTunes should recognize the phone. When it does release the HOME button and hope for the best.

  • Iphone 4 stuck in recovery mode and will not restore in itunes. HELP!

    Hey Guys
I tried to jailbreak my iphone (bad idea obviously) and ever since, its been screwing up.
At first, it was stuck on the apple logo- Then I followed some videos on Youtube and it was stuck on the Pineapple from Redsnow..
NOW its stuck in restore mode (the screen with the USB and the Itunes symbol) I have tried to restore it 3 times and it gives me an error message (1604) or it doesn't even restore.
HELPP! It's been like this all day. What could I do?

FIRST, edit your hosts file (which was corrupted by the jailbreak process) and remove any references to gs.apple.com; delete the whole lines and save the file. If you don't know how to do this you will have to get help, and it shows that jailbreaking was a bigger mistake than you thought.

  • Updated to iOS 6.1.2, phone went into recovery mode and will not restore, help?

    exactly as the title says.
error 3194 came up and well yeah, nothing's working.

Most likely you previously used an  iPhone hacking utility such as tinyumbrella that messed with your computer hosts file, blocking access to the Apple server gs.apple.com.  See this:
Error 1004, 1013, 1638, 3014, 3194: These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Check security software. Ensure that communication to gs.apple.com is allowed. Follow this article for assistance with security software. iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. FollowiTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

  • My ipod is in recovery mode and will not do anything

my ipod is in recovery mode and will not let me do anything i have tryed to reinstall but still nothing

Just what happens when you connect it to your computer and restore via iTunes?
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
