IPOD cannot be update - 40 GB Click Wheel

Upgraded Itunes & Ipod to latest software versions and can't synch up ipod with Itunes. Have followed ALL steps to recify...uninstall, empty temp directory, standalone Quicktime, reinstall latest. Install goes fine but when I connect Ipod it begins to update from itunes but after about 9G or 2500 songs it says complete (I have over 7500 songs). When I go to update again I get the error message "The iPOD cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." Please help!

Well it was worth a try...after restoring iPOD, set it up and started auto download from iTunes...once again, everything seemed to be going fine...got up to 2615 songs and it started slowing down while updating ipod and ipod statred making little noises..at 2636 songs it said ipod update complete..my ipod still said do not disconnect so I ejected and still said same thing..no songs updated although it said they had.....reconnected and only 5 songs shoed...clicked on update again and got the message "windows delayed write failed..windows was unable to save all the data for the file G: the data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. please try to save the file elsewhere....the other message that i have been getting is "This ipod Neil's Ipod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to"

  • ERROR MESSAGE: The IPOD cannot be updated.

Please help!! Have tried everything can think of including, resetting, retrying, restarting, reinstalling and restoring. ITunes automatically starts downloading when you connect but then only transfers the first 50 or so songs in the library, and then says update complete. When you ask it to then update the IPOD through file menu an error message comes up saying 'The IPOD cannot be updated, the disk could not be read from or written to.' There is no problem with the IPOD, because I have been able to update it via another PC, it just won't update via the laptop even though the ITunes has been set up on the laptop as the ITunes I want to use.

  • ITunes error -50 - iPod cannot be updated

    Hi,
I've updated iTunes to the most recent version (5.0.0.35) on Windows XP. When I try to update my iPod (4th Gen Click Wheel, most recent iPod update (september's) run) everything is fine. When I try to update with Outlook's contacts, that's fine as well. When I try to update with Outlook's calendar I get the following error message...
'The iPod "....." cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)'
Any ideas out there? Let me know what other infor you may need.
    Thanx in advance!!

Same issue here, only I get:
"The ipod ** cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-4)"
I've never seen a -4 error and can't seem to locate anyone else that has, either, but on a hunch I disabled my Outlook Calendar synching and it went away. Contact synching still seems to work, however.
What a great feature! Hope Apple fixes this soon! =/

  • Error:the ipod cannot be updated. the disc could not be read from or writte

May sound silly I am sorry, new to this. Just got an ipod shuffle and have gone through all troubleshooting suggestions ie: restore ipod, reinstall software etc. Am getting an error: "The ipod "administrator's ipod" cannot be updated. The disc could not be read from or written to". This occurs when I click and drag a playlist from the source section to my ipod in the source section. Getting a wee bit discouraged by reading all the problems associated with this ipod and am hoping for an easy fix to slide past further frustration. Please help. Thank you muchly.

The ipod actually does update adding recently added songs but the album artwork for some of them is wrong, even though it is correct in itunes. After itunes says ipod update complete the "ipod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" message appears. Did you ever fix this problem, if so how?

When i try to use ipod updater i get " Can't mount iPod" I have an ipod nano 2gb black version and am runnign windows xp with the newest itunes and ipod updater.

try this, change the drive letter of the ipod this can sometimes solve your issue change it to "M" or something like that this is how to change it, Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.

I have the latest iPod software and iTunes. When I plug my 5G ipod into my computer, after it transfers a few new songs, I get the following pop-up message:

    Any tips? Thanks!

I am having this exact problem.
Though what will also happen after I click on "ok" the ipod will disconnect it self from itunes; it remains pluged in and the "do not disconnect" icon is shown on the screen, but it just stays like that from any where from 2-30 minutes. Eventually it will reconnect and start updating again untill the "The iPod 'name of iPod' cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found." message comes up and the whole prosses starts over again, this has made updating the ipod which I have already reset, quite a headache to update, the prosses has not yet been compleated as I cannot be at my computer for mor than a few hours at a time. I also reinstalled itunes to see if that would fix the problem it has not. Though before, I would also get the message "an unknown error has occured." now that dosen't seem to appear, so at least that is fixed.

  • My iPod cannot be updated! Plz help!

I'm using a 30-GB iPod with Video, bought May 06 in Japan. It can't be updated for 1 month so far. I still can update songs into my iTunes properly, while songs in iTunes can't get into my iPod. I've tried to reset iTunes and iPods in my PCs for several times, but the problem can't be solved. Error message is "The iPod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Can anyone show me how to settle the problem? Thank you guys. Van Anh

Oh, I don't think my iPod's being not updatable due to iTunes 7.0 on Windows XP. The error message "Your iPod cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" also appears with my at-home PC which runs original iTunes 6.1 (the Apple running disk went with my iPod). I've come to realize that Folder "Photos" in the iPod may be the reason? I deleted pictures in it once, and since then, I can't add new photos, together with new songs from my iTunes library into iPod. When I double-click the Photos folder, the message "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" also appears. How can I fix it? I've reset my iPod but failed to fix the problem. Don't anyone of you meet the same matter? Plz help! Thank you guys.

  • "ipod cannot be updated...required file in use" error message HELP!

So I just updated my itunes with the new 7.0 and everything works great, except-- every 10 mins or so, I get this error message "The ipod "xxx's ipod" cannot be updated. The required file is in use."
Nothing happens, I just have to click "ok", but its really annoying. And it pops up again in a few minutes.
I seem to remember this happening before on another update but I don't remember what I did.
Anyone else experiencing this or know what to do?
    Thanks!!

I am having the exact same problem -- Itunes version 7 update seems to have created this issue. I get this error message about every five minutes if my Ipod is plugged into my computer, "Ipod cannot be updated. Required file is in use." Super annoying. I noticed a solution posted on this forum but it doesn't seem to work for Macs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • The ipod cannot be updated because....

I got a message this afternoon after adding some songs to my iTunes saying something along the lines of I couldn't fit all the library songs on my iPod so iTunes was going to create a new playlist for me (or something). iPod Select or something. That was fine, except that when I went into my playlists on my iPod - all of them were gone except on-the-go and this new 'select' playlist.
So I deleted this iTunes-created-playlist and went to re-sync, however I got a new message saying "The ipod cannot be updated because one or more of the iTunes playlists selected to update no longer exists". ALL of my music is still in the iTunes library, all of my playlists are still in iTunes (recently added, top 25 etc) but these settings won't sync to my iPod which is now completely EMPTY (2nd gen nano btw).
    Any ideas?

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
lost libraryHow to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • "The iPod "stu's iPod" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred [-50]"

I plug my new ipod nano 2gen into windows... then it pops up in Itunes, But After i had put all my songs on, everytime i want to take some off or sync with the ipod with my new podcasts or pictures.. it says on the monitor thats its updating my ipod, but my ipod is showing no sign of updating.
When its updating the ipod i think it say's "do not disconnect" But it doesn't
Then after a minute error message on computer saying
"The iPod "stu's iPod" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred [-50]"
Any help would be appricated. Thanks in advance.

Found out my problem.. i think.
Now for people who might have the same problem getting there ipod to snyc, then this is what i did, which made my ipod work and snyc properly.
After the error sign, i click restore all my ipod's info and data to defualt. Then when i asked me to snyc for the first time in the box... "snyc'ing either my music and or photo's" NOW, every time i did this, i clicked on snyc my music. but i since just now, if i uncheck the "snyc my music", so nothing will be uploaded to the ipod, and manage my MUSIC my self. All i do now is drag my music playlists and it either updates the ipod, if the ipod already has a version of the play list. But thats just wiht my music. I can now snyc all my podcasts and photos using the Sync button.
Hope this is of help to SOME ONE!
Im so pleased now... things are accutally working...!
    Good day people.

    Hi,
Connect your iPod to the PC and start the iTunes application (most likely it will start automatically when you connect the iPod).
In the left column you will see a heading "DEVICES". Below that is a small icon that represents your iPod. It might take a few seconds to appear, though.
Click on the icon, on the right a pane will appear with 5 headings (Summary, Music, Podcasts, Photos, Contacts).
Click on Photos. A page will appear with on the top line something like: "Sync photos from:" with a box beside it that displays the directory name of your photos.
Click on that box and select "Choose Folder"
A dialog willappear with a directory tree, your photo folder is highlighted. Expand that folder by clickin on the "+" sign next to it.
The expanded list will contain an item "iPod Photo Cache".
Right click that item and select "Delete".
Windows asks whether you're sure. Click YES if you are.
After the deletion, click "OK" to close the dialog.
Right click on the iPod icon again and select "Sync". You're photo cache will be rebuilt for you. This takes a few minutes, depending on the amount of photos you have.
    That's it.
Hope it works for you. I have assumed you use English for both Windows and iTunes.
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Hello there dilip77707,
It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:
'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
