Copy all the contents currently on your iPod Classic to your new iTunes library and then choose the Erase and Sync option. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not sync more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync process.  The hard drive has been upgraded, it has a new logicboard (with 128mb RAM), new housing, battery, hold / headphone jack.  Basically the only original parts are the bezel, click wheel, screen, and data ribbons. Have attempted the 3Rs and have also tried to isolate potentially corrupt audio files and remove them, but this did not seem to be the primary cause.  The sync failure consistently happens at just under a 1000 songs (5.4gb) and then it starts to error (-69) any song after that.  Your advise would be enthusiastically received.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • Ipod classic 5th gen 80 GB, cannot add more files past 12.9 GB

I have an ipod classic 5th gen and I can't add any songs or videos past 12.9 GB even though its an 80 GB capacity.  I keep getting the error messages:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "ipod" failed.  the disk could not be read from or written to."
"The ipod could not be synced because it can not be read or written to"
"itunes could not copy "x" to the ipod "ipod" because the file could not be read or written"
I have already restored, updated, erased hard drive using disk utility and installed fresh copy of ios 1.1.2, replaced the battery, used all my usb ports, used firewire port, formatted on both windows and mac, and downgraded to 1.1.0, but still can't go past 12.9 GB.
What can I do to resolve this problem?

By the sounds of it, you have pretty much exhausted all forms of troubleshooting for this type of issue.  It appears that the iPod's HD is beyond repair.  To verify that, see this older post from another forum member turingtest2 going over step-by-step instructions on how to perform a disk diagnostics on the iPod and what the resulting numbers mean.

  • IPod Classic 5th Gen

My iPod classic 5th gen will not do absolutely anything even when plugged into a working charger. Ive tried resetting it but there is not even an apply logo pop up screen, it absolutely does nothing.

Have you tried a reset of the iPod?  To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, try a restore of the iPod in iTunes.

To be of any assistance, we need more info
Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software version as shown in the iTunes summarry page?
Which model of iPod Classic are you using?
Can you play the music listed in the iTunes library?
Most helpful if you try and get the error message or bring it in to the Apple Store for the Genius to have a look.

  • IPod classic 5th gen. with sad face goes into disk mode but wont register in itunes

I have an iPod classic 5th gen. A while ago it stopped working and the sad faced iPod started showing up. i've tried putting it into disk mode but when i do it wont pop up into itunes like it should and as soon as i unplug it the sad face appears again. is there anyway to fix it or is it done?

There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon. You may find it useful.
The Sad iPod/folder and ! icon.
Btw, there's no such thing as a "4th generation 20gb classic." Your iPod is a 4th gen and not an iPod classic which is a completely different model.

  • Ipod classic 5th Gen stuck in recovery Windows Vista

Alright, here are the details: my iPod classic 5th gen. is stuck in recovery mode,
and it won't connect to iTunes so I can restore it. Now, I know I have the latest
version of iTunes, I have deleted it & reinstalled it, and even restarted my
computer, but it still won't come up in iTunes...What should I do??

A person on youtube presented a fix by putting the ipod into disk mode and then plugging it into your Windows computer. Well... what happens on mine is the itunes dashboard does come up which to me means it recognizes an ipod is attached but after 30 mins. the icon showing my ipod never appears on the dashboard so I can open it to restore it. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated (especially if you ever found something that worked).

  • I have an iPod Classic 5th Gen.  After 1 month I've lost all my music and playlist files.  The only files left are music I have purchased from iTunes.  How do I restore my music library to my iPod?

I have an iPod Classic 5th Generation.  I have not used it for about one month.  When I turned it on, I had lost all my music and playlist files.  The only thing left on the iPod was the music and audio books I have purchased from iTunes store.  I tried to delete everything on the ipod by sliding the hold button and then pressing the center button and the menu and I saw the apple logo on the screen but the iPod wouldn't reboot.  Any suggestions as to how I can delete everything on the iPod and then plug it into my computer to restore my music library?  I am using a Windows 7 operating system.

Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.
    Good Luck!

  • Ipod classic 5th gen no audio

    I have a White iPod Classic 5Th genoration 30GB,
I am really good with apple products and have alrady replaced the headphone jack and lock switch, and the lock switch works but no audio comes from this iPod

Perhaps this older thread can shed a little light. This problem usually is the result of a bad/failed/damaged audio chip on the iPod's logic board.

  • I have a ipod classic 5th gen 30gb, if i download a movie or song from the current itunes i use with my ipod touch will it play? or do i have to get another type of itunes, if so which one?

i have windows 7 and a2nd gen ipod touch and i just aquired an ipod classic which is a 5th gen from 2005 with a 30 gb capacity. can i download a video movie or episode and songs from the current itunes i use for my ipod touch or is there a different one i should use? please help.

You can plug the iPod into the same iTunes library as your iPod Touch and sync whatever content you like to it. There is no limilt to the number of iPads, iPhones, or iPods you can sync with one iTunes library, account, or computer.  How you sync one device will not affect the syncing preferences of the other.

  • Ipod classic  5th gen no sound, ipod classic  5th gen no sound

hi i got a 5th gen ipod classic, today  no sound will come out of it (headphone or dock) i tried to reboot it but that did not do any thing, has any one got any ideals what to do.
    thanks
    steven

I have one doing that.  I suddenly had audio quit.  Everything else checked out and works just no audio.  Tried everything and by chance I found that if I squeeze lower right hand side of case audio starts.  Had a shop check it and found nothing wrong with audio cable but think it may be logic board.  Found a forum and it seems that apple is aware of this issue.  Here is the link to the forum I am in the process of trying to get mine fixed or replaced.  Hope this helps you somewhat.  http://forums.macnn.com/103/ipod-iphone-and-ipad/351485/no-sound-ipod/

  • IPod classic 5th gen; charges half way but now it won't charge at all

I suppose my first mistake was buying a used iPod, oh well. If worked fine when I got it but had a weak batery which I replaced. It worked perfectly. A few weeks later the right channel went on the fritz; had to jiggle to make it work. However when I replaced the the jack (fyi, the jack and hold button are on one ribbon cable) it stopped charging to 100%. Now it's been two days and my iPod hasn't charged. Whether I plug it into my PC or a wall outlet, the screen while continuously read "very low battery please wait". Any theories? They'd be much appreciated.
iPod Classic Video 5th Gen, 30Gb

Just to cover all ground here, you have tried using another USB sync cable to see if that makes a difference? Have you double checked the battery's connection to the logic board?

  • IPod Classic 5th Gen - possible HD fault

Hi so I have a 5th gen iPod Classic 80GB which has been working fine since I bought it second hand.
Yesterday however it was not responding and I connected it to my laptop to resolve the issue and it came up as corrupted. I have had to put it into Disk Mode, followed by fully restoring it to factory settings.
this process has taken a long time to get to but eventually went through fully. now however it is fully restored when disconnected from my laptop. as soon as i plug it into my laptop it shows the screen status saying "Connected - Eject before disconnecting.". however instead of displaying the charger connection picture it shows the rotating sync symbol as if it is syncing, but this isnt the case.
just for reference the ipod also does not appear in itunes when it is connected to the laptop but does show up in my desktop as a removable disk. in addition, the ipod works as if it were new when disconnected.
everytime I disconnect the ipod and reconnect it to my laptop it repeats the process saying the ipod needs to be restored to factory settings even though i have just completed this process.
I have done some research on apple support and read about how to access the test mode on the iPod which shows diagnostics.
I have been at it for a fews hours now to resolve the issue but I am out of ideas of what to do.
could anyone help me with this rather frustrating problem?
    many thanks,
    Johnny

I have a similar prob 5th or 6th gen 120GB classic, been working fine regular conection to PC and alway keep the
    software up to date.
After latest itunes upgrade first time connect ipod PC said need to be formatted itunes had it as a possible
corruption, did factory restore but still get the same error messages. Once disconeected ipod seems almost new
as can set menus etc but obv all music wiped in the restore.
done a full re-install of latest itunes with live apple support but still get same PC and itunes error messages.
I hope this isnt a glitch with new version of itunes.
I purchased ipod in 2009 so I can get a replacement from point of purchase under"Consumer Law" as a "known hardware issue" supposedly. Or pay £90.00 ish and have the same thing done thru apple shop or approved
service centre. Or get a new one but surely if more of these issues come about now then maybe there is a glitch with the new itunes

  • My iPod Classic 5th Gen 30gb won't sync

I need some help here. In the past, I've been able to connect my iPod to my iTunes, hit sync, and be on my way. Now, I don't know what has happened, but, whenever I connect my iPod to iTunes and hit sync, iTunes just keeps saying that it is "Starting sync" and doesn't get past that. It does show up in iTunes and I have been able to move files on the iPods disc, but it just refuses to sync. I've tried waiting for very long amounts of time, yet it still just says "Starting sync." I've tried resetting, using different USB ports, using different iPod cables, rebooting my computer, letting the iPod die completely and recharging it completely, checking for updates on the software, and even restoring, which wiped away all the music off of my iPod which I, for the time, cannot sync back on. I haven't found any other problems like this and am becoming worried beacuse I need my music a lot of the time. Is there anything I can do?

I don't think the wireless receiver for the keyboard/mouse will have any effect.  Sometimes, there can be conflict between USB devices, so that's why I advised removing as much as possible.
The fact that it completes Restore successfully seems show that the iPod is OK.  If it was getting stuck during the syncing, like maybe a part of the iPod's hard drive has bad sectors, then it would get passed the "starting sync" bit and show the progress bar.  So I think it's something related to software (on the computer).
Try this...  Select the iPod in the sidebar under DEVICES.  Over to the right, on the Summary tab, check the checkbox for Enable disk use.  Apply the change.  This will keep the iPod connected to Windows as a "disk," even when iTunes is not syncing.  With disk use enabled, try doing a sync.  NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the iPod in iTunes before physically disconnecting it.
