IPod Classic, 80GB won't sync but shows as Mass Storage and even shows it as " names iPod"?

A few years ago, I was given an iPod Classic 80GB for Christmas, but due to the age of my PC at the time (steam powered almost), I couldn't connect it to iTunes. I used my friends iTunes to put music on it. A few years down the line I now have my own laptop and an extensive music library on my iTunes. I tried to connect it to Sync today for the first time, and it won't.
The laptop knows it's there as it comes up as a device. When I click it, I can find "<names> iPod" in the devices hardware. When I open iTunes, it allows me to Scan and Fix. The iPod charges fine, connects and plays music that's already on it. However, when I open File in iTunes, the command "Sync iPod" is not highlighted, and therefore, unclickable.
In short -
iPod does everything it should, except Sync with my iTunes.
Any help would be very much appriciated.
My laptop is running Windows 7 and the latest iTunes.

Try the iPod Hard Reset -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then release the button
Select your preferred language.
This wont delete or erase any song/data on your iPod Classic.

  • My iPod Classic 80Gb won't sync with iTunes after "Restoring" to factory settings

My iPod Classic is probably about 8 years old, or maybe a little more and has never before given serious problems. Until I recently "restored" the device, the hard drive had about 40Gb of music and podcasts stored on it but no photos or videos.
The device recently just "died" completely and without warning - just a blank screen with no response from any of the controls.  I rebooted it using the "Menu" and "Select" buttons and it came back to life. However as it had recently been displaying some other small issues like having to be manually ejected every time after syncing, instead of automatically saying "it is now safe to disconnect" as it always used to, I thought I'd restore it to its original factory settings and then reload my catalogue.  Big mistake!
Now when I connect the device, it won't automatically sync as it always used to; and when I try to manually sync it either from the "Sync" button at the bottom right hand corner of the iTunes screen or by right-clicking on the device's icon in iTunes and selecting the "sync" option, the iTunes banner simply states "iPod sync is complete" and "Eject before disconnecting" with no data being loaded.
My computer is a Windows 7 PC running the latest version of iTunes (11.3.1.2) and the iPod device software is up to date (version 1.1.2). <my windows updates are carried out automatically.   I have worked my way through the iTunes diagnostics pages, but to no avail.
Any assistance in resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

You would have to update you Mac os.
    It is clear:
    System requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later, and iTunes 10 or later4
PC with USB 2.0 port; Windows 7, Vista, or XP Home or Professional (SP3) or later; and iTunes 10 or later4
Internet access required; broadband recommended; fees may apply"

  • Ipod classic 80GB won't sync.

Hi, I posted in another thread and was advised to start my own discussion.
I have an ipod classic 80 GB from 2008 that runs fine except that in the past few weeks it will not sync with itunes 10.4.1 on an old MacBook white from 2006. I had not synced in a while but when I wanted to update a playlist it freezes itunes completely, usually right after it prompts me on whether or not I want to restore purchases no longer present in itunes. In some other topics I've seen suggestions to wait it out to see if it will sync eventually while the beach ball spins, but after 20-30 minutes it still won't sync.
I am unable to restore the ipod because when the ipod icon is present in itunes, by that time it has already frozen and I have to force quit. The ipod seems to connect fine otherwise, and as I had it set to disk mode it will appear in Finder and files stored on the machine seem perfectly accessible.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is frustrating. I also have a Classic 80. I don't have Windows7 so I don't know if that is contributing to the problem. However, have you tried going into "programs, apple, change, repair? Maybe a file is missing that is needed to run sync. That was my problem. Secondly, you Ipod may be full of duplicates. I found that out when I opened Ipod. I had movies and songs I thought I had lost. When you sync Ipod and Itunes, and it gives the message that your files on your Ipod will be wiped out and replaced with Itunes library, don't believe it. They are still on your Ipod and your Ipod get overloaded. I had an orange bar on Itunes. When you find the duplicates, you can save them to another file or delete them. I hope this is a solution. Ipod is an expensive item. Another suggestion, update Ipod hardwire on Itunes webpage.

  • TS1591 My ipod classic (80gb) won't sync with my mac & itunes. How can i fix this without losing all my data? (ie. music, photos, video)

My ipod classic is still working, its not frozen or anything. It just won't sync up with my macbook and itunes. I recently realized that I had previously connected it to a PC just to charge it then it when i tried to connect it to my mac, it wouldn't sync up. Can someone help me figure this out? I don't want to lose all of my data though, like music, photos, or videos. Any help is appreciated! Thank you for your time!

okay, I don't know about the rest, but about the songs never actually loading onto your iPod, I found in another discussion how to fix that. I'm using Windows 7, so I don't know if the steps are the same, but the end result is the same. So go into your Start menu, then into accessories, right click 'Command Prompt' and click 'Run as administrator'. Then type in the following: netsh winsock reset then press Enter. After a few seconds it should tell you to to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Restart your computer, then restart iTunes, then everything should be working fine. It still takes forever sometimes to update the iPod, but eventually it will work. I've had to do this multiple times, so I'd suggest copying & pasting this solution into a notepad or Word document and saving it on your computer, so you don't have to go through the discussions again to find it. This tends to happen to me nearly every day unfortunately Hope this fixes that problem, but I'm not having any of the other problems fortunately, except for removing the artwork of the songs it updates without me asking it too. PS I think my problem may be with iOS 5, because iTunes 10.5 came out before iOS 5, and I think everything was fine before I updated my iPod, but I really don't know where the problem lies

  • Ipod Classic 80gb won´t work with apple universal dock and remote

I own 2 ipods a 5th generation 60gb and an ipod classic 60gb. I've just bought an apple universal dock with remote and the original apple component and composite AV cables. I connected the universal dock to my TV via the composite cable, with my ipod 5th gen I can watch videos on the TV and control the ipod with the apple remote but when I connect my ipod classic to the universal dock it will charge but I can´t get any video out or control the ipod with the remote. It's as if the ipod classic doesn't recognize the universal dock and it keeps showing the connect the video accessory screen, even when i tried using the apple component AV cable. I dont think the problem is with the universal dock because it works fine with my Ipod video 60gb, but with my Ipod Classic 80gb the remote control and video out won't work at all, i can´t even control the playback of audio playlists. Does anyone know why that is happenning? Please help me!

I have the Classic 80gb also...same probem. I retuned the Apple Universal Dock and purchased one that was half the price. Pluged it in and it works perfectly! So my advice would be to save some money and get products that work.

  • My ipod classic 120GB won't sync to itunes

I have updated itunes and un-installed and re-installed it multiple times but I've had no luck. I have deleted all the content off of my ipod but it still won't sync to itunes, any help please? I have spent hours trying to find a solution but I feel as if I should give up now, has anyone got any advice?

You iPod looks ok, except for the Pending Sector of 8,  and the high Start Stop numbers.
What is the iPod Software as shown in the Itunes summary page in your Mac?
    My Suggestions
Try the Hard Reset first, it worked for some people,
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Disconnect the iPod from the Mac
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Then try to connect and see it iTunes recognised it.
Also note that when you sync an iPod, do connect it directly to the body of the Mac, and not via any USB Hub or the keyboard USB hub. Also do not use any other USB devices.
    Good Luck!

  • Ipod classic 160gb  won't sync past the 36 gigabyte point

I recently had the headphone jack on my iPod Classic replaced, but when I got it back and tried to sync it on my computer (running Windows XP SP3) I began to encounter serious problems. When the sync reaches the 36 gigabyte mark (I can't say for sure if it always crashes at exactly the same point), the ipod will refuse to add any more music and I encounter one of three error messages, one about being unable to write itunesdb.old, one claiming the ipod is full and one claiming it encountered a crc error (alas I can't remember the exact wording of any of the three, I can get this information with some effort if it is really necessary). Furthermore, after this error occurs, the ipod causes the computer to behave sluggishly, with the 'my computer' folder frequently freezing when I attempt to open it. Also, when I attempt to eject the ipod it goes into a reset (but for some reason it will still play all music added before the last sync attempt perfectly).
I have taken a number of steps to try and fix this problem, after the ipod would not sync with Winamp and the ml_ipod plugin, I installed the latest version of iTunes and encountered the same problem, I also tried restoring the ipod using iTunes a number of times. To ensure the problem was not corrupt files I ran the chdk utility on my hard drive, in addition I attempted to add files from different parts of my music library, tried adding the music letter by letter and tried syncing the ipod to my friend's music collection on his computer (running Vista and the latest Itunes)and encountered the same problem every time.
Could someone please help me out diagnosing this problem?

I bought my 160gb iPod clear in the knowlege that I had a 12 month warranty on hardware failure. No extended warranty or insurance. If I lose my iPod or damage it through carelessness I'll be cross with myself not Apple. I've had almost two years use out of it so far and when it does die, hopefully from natural causes, I'll still be cross but I reckon I'll have had my money's worth. Having been through a significant number and variety of portable cassette & CD players over 30 years it's lasted longer & been much more fun to own than any of those. To be honest it's survived quite a few falls and proved to be remarkably robust although my nice silicone sleeve may be an important factor in it's survival. Two of my kids have 5th gen iPods which have needed new headphone jacks (their wear & tear) and one's battery could do with replacing (age) but they've been good too.
Hard drives can & do fail. A hard drive that is used while moving is probably going to have a shorter life-span than one that sits still. This article on the bathtub curve illustrates three classes of failure, early infant mortality, due, presumably to some manufacturing defect, random failures over time & failures due to wear & tear. User induced failure (dropping, drowning, baking in the sun etc.) are presumably random over time, although I guess we're all a little more protective/careful with a shiny new toy. Your warranty should have covered any early failure. Apple or your dealer probably offered an option for an extended warranty when you bought it which you, I presume, like me, declined on the basis that you didn't think it was good value for the money. With this in mind why do you think Apple should replace an out of warranty iPod? They've kept their end of the contract, presumably you've had 12 months of useage out of it for your warranty to have expired.
Putting all that aside you say you have the same problem. What symptoms exactly? Have you looked at the SmartData for example? Have you conducted surface tests of both the iPod's drive & your source media? If your iPod's drive is damaged are you being honest with yourself over how roughly you've treated it?

  • IPod Classic 160gb won't sync a song?

My ipod classic 160gb wont sync a song, it just says this song wont play on this ipod. Is there anyway I can fix it? Or make it sync? Or something?

    Hello danmic1,
What format is this song in?  Have you tried converting it to another format via iTunes and then syncing the new version over to your iPod?  See this article for more information on converting your track to a different audio file format in iTunes.

  • IPod Classic 120GB won't sync songs

My iPod recently began having issues, such as not playing songs that should've worked, skipping over them, etc. So I chose to restore it, and now it stops syncing songs at around 3 GB worth of music, and I'll either get error 1303, 53, or 69. I sync manually, no photos or anything besides music. When it gets to around 3GB full, the sync will start going really slow, and I can hear a weird crackling sound coming from my iPod, as if it's trying too hard, and then the error message pops up after this goes on for a while.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    - 5 R's
    - Disk Mode
    - Turning off UAC
    - Using the Administrator as the account doing the sync
    - Using different usb cable
    - Using different USB ports
    - Using different laptop/desktop
    - Updating Itunes, Ipod, & Windows Updates
Everytime I see a "solution" in a thread, I try it, and not one of them has worked. I've also heard it is a hard drive issue, relating to Itunes 9.0.3, which I've been using. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2298386&tstart=15
If nobody has an answer, at least can someone tell me how to convince Apple to send me a replacement? My iPod is still under coverage of the warranty.

Same thing happened to me. I took the ipod back yesterday to the apple store and I got a new one. However, I'm still having the same problem. I think that something is wrong with the settings or itunes 9 itself. Going to keep checking.

  • Ipod Classic 120GB won't sync properly

My ipod was working perfectly normally. I connect the ipod to my computer normally, itunes recognises I have an ipod connected but a window appears saying "itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes". I select the option to restore my ipod and it does so. I receive the message stating that this was successful and I need to wait for my ipod to restart and it'll attempt syncing again. As soon as it is restarted and apparently connected the message saying I need to restore my ipod appears again. This continues no matter how many times I repeat this process. I have 697 songs and 80 music videos so I easily have enough space, could it be a problem with my itunes?

    Hello Alpha3TW,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like your iPod may be getting confused with a network drive or another attached drive that has or was assigned the same drive letter as your iPod. I would try changing the iPod's drive letter to see if that does any good. For instructions on how to do this, see this Apple support document.

when I try to sync my iPod it goes through the first two steps but when it begins syncing pics it stops and gives me a message that says something like "cannot sync iPod because files can't be read or written". Music is updated but no pics to be found. I've reset, rebooted, recharged and nothing helps. What's up? it worked great till iTunes 11 update it seems to me but there's no way to revert to older versions.

  • My ipod classic 80GB has stopped syncing songs from my itunes! How do I fix this?!

There has been nothing wrong with my ipod until the recent software update from itunes. Since then I can't sync my library to my ipod. At most at a time I would get one or two songs before the ipod stops and freezes and can't finish syncing. Error code 53 keeps poping up just when it freezes. I have tried restoring the ipod and also resetting it completely but to no avail! I have also tried to manually put my library into my ipod but this does not work either! Is there anyway to fix this or could someone please tell me what's up with my ipod?!

  • IPod Classic 120gb won't sync with Windows 7

I recently purchased a new computer and installed iTunes fully on it (with all 2000 of my songs!).  When I plugged in my iPod to sync with the new computer, I began to get error messages about certain songs.  When the sync was "complete," I had about 600 songs on there.  I have tried numerous troubleshooting ideas and have restored my iPod numerous times as well to no avail.  I attempted to sync with the old computer and am getting the same error messages.  Any ideas!?

Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software that is shown on the iTunes summary page?
It would be helpful, if you can tell us the exact error messages.
Has these "unsyncable"  same songs been synced to the iPod using the old computer?
