IPod Classic and TV
Right now on my iPod Video I use the AV cables that came with my Sony Camcorder to watch videos on my TV. My question is do these cables still work with the new iPod Classic?
Thanks,
Man, you know I love most of the Apple products and they seems like a great hardware and software company, but I have long maintained that Apple has got to be the leader in poor/misleading/missing/bad documentation and help files.
This is disappointing and it looks like you are right, that the old AV cable can only be used with the Classic in conjunction with the doc station. But no longer can you use it straight out of the headphone jack. The Feature Guide lists the old style AV cable but then totally misses including a note about needing the dock for that to work. Which would mislead most reasonable people into assuming the Classic works the same as the 5th Gen with TV Out available on the headphone jack.
On a side note, the Feature guide also states the Classic works with Panther (OS 10.3.9) but I already saw a post by someone who bought one, plugged it into their 10.3.9 Mac and immediately got a pop up stating they needed 10.4 to use that iPod. Again, another serious oversight.
Makes you wonder if the Feature guide was largely written before the Classic was finalized and some specs changes, like the minimum Mac OS required.
It is a shame Apple is so poor with documentation.

I recently connected my new ipad to my itunes, but now itunes will not recognise my ipod classic, and 50gig of music has gone. ipad connects ok but no longer ipod which has been there for two years! help!!!
What happens when the iPod is plugged in? anything? any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone? All music should exist on the computer. Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on. -
I have an iPod Classic and the latest version of iTunes. I make all my purchases on my computer, but when I try to click the "add to" option and transfer the songs to my iPod, it doesn't work. How can I get my songs from my computer to my iPod?

My itunes library is backed onto hard drive, I am visiting a relative soon and wish to share our music, we both have ipod classics and he has i tunes installed onto his pc.
I don't want to take my pc with me but the hard drive may be an option. Can we share music from my hard drive plugged into his pc? and if so how? also can I then copy music from his library onto the hard drive so that i can sync them to my i pod. Or is there a way we can do it with just the i pods and pc? Pls help techno novice!System Preferences - Sharing. If you cannot find System Preferences, then use Command - Spacebar and type System Preference and when you see it in Spotlight (uper right) hit return.

My MacBook Pro hard drive crashed a little while ago and has been replaced. Is it possible to take tunes from iPod Classic and transfer all of them back to iTunes on computer? Is this just for purchased tunes or can I do it for ones that have been burned from CD's as well? Thanks for any help!

I recently rented a movie to add on my ipod classic and it wasn't transferring when I would sync so I manually move it to my ipod but when I go on my ipod it is not there and it is no longer in my purchases on itunes. help!
Is this on your computer or on iPad/iPhone ? If you are on an iPad or iPhone then it should have downloaded into the Videos app - iTunes on those devices is just the iTunes store, and if you just see the Ts & Cs link on the Downloads tab then that means that there are no outstanding downloads waiting.

I have an ipod classic and just had to replace my laptop. When I purchase music, while it downloads to my laptop, it no longer syncs to my ipod. Any ideas?
There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it. -
I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?
Yes, you can!(:
STEP 1: Open iTunes
STEP 2: Navigate to the "iTunes Store". It can be found under the "STORE" tab.
STEP 3: On the right side of the store there should be a "Quick Links" Section. Click on the "Purchased" link.
STEP 4: Navigate to the "Music" tab and click on "All Songs". Then at the bottom of the screen there will be a button that says "Download All". Click the button and your songs will be begin downloading!
NOTE: This will only work with songs that you bought from the iTunes store, if you imported them from a CD, you will have to do it again.
NOTE: You can also do this with Apps, Movies, TV Shows, and Books.
NOTE: You may have to sign in with your Apple ID to verify the download.
Hope this helped! Enjoy your music!(: -

IPod Classic and iTunes 10.5.x
I've been monitoring the iPod Classic forums for over a month now, trying to get a feeling of whether to upgrade my Windows 7 system to the latest iTunes (10.5.x). I'm interested in the update for the security fixes, but have been wary ever since iTunes 9.
I'm impressed with the folks that answer here, and have attempted to summarize my observations regarding the common questions in this post in my journal. The impression I'm getting, at least from the support questions and answers, is that iTunes 10.5 is iffy. I'm seeing lots of questions where iTunes (apparently 10.5) seemingly hangs in the middle of a large transfer (usually due to an interaction with the anti-virus software), and ends up corrupting the filesystem on the iPod Classic, requiring a restore and a retransfer of all files. Further (especially a concern for folks like me with over 26,000 songs), that transfer needs to be done in small chunks.
So, my question to the experts on this forum (turingtest, planb77, bilbo_cheshire, and all the other good folks here) is: Is my impression correct? If I have no need to use the cloud (which doesn't work with the iPod Classic) and if iTunes 10.4 is working fine, don't f--- with it.
Secondly, does anyone know if Apple is aware of these interactions, and is it likely to be fixed in a future version. My fear, of course, is that the iPod Classic is a dead iPod classic playing, and there won't be Apple support for a device with the large storage capacities.

I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

Hi i'm trying to restore my iPod classic and it says that the iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1434) what can i do to fix this? Thanks
Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

Can I download my own films to my ipod classic, and if so, how do I do this?
If you own the distribution roghts to them (home movies for example), then yes. Convert them to a compatible format ( found in the manual) and put them in itunes. They sync them to the device.
DVDs that you buy are encrypted to stop you from doing this. Breaking this encryption is illegal. -
