Ipod freezing during synch

just got a macbook pro, had a sony vaio. had 6000 songs on external hard drive I wanted on my new mac. got them onto it, put them into itunes, bought some new songs, wanted to add them to ipod. tried to synch my ipod and it said my ipod was corrupted or somrhting and I needed to reset ipod to factory settings and loose all music, etc. i did that. now i am trying to get my music back on ipod and everythime I put ipod in dock to synch it, it goes for a few songs then freezes. i try to eject ipod and it freezes computer. so i take it out of dock and then loose all info again. i have done this 10x today and have had it. is my ipod just shot? it is an older model, i got it may 2004. any advice/tips?

*it would be good for us to use more descriptive subject headings.*
Do you mean when making posts in these forums?
Seriously though, you are very correct.
"HELP!!!" and "iTunes" are not very meaningful.
I don't even usually look at them.

  • Ipod freezes during sync then error that it cant read file...

A little pre-info... I have owned a black 30gb 5th gen (video) Ipod for a couple of years now. I plug it in fine, my computer recognizes it fine, Itunes works fine with it... everything works great.
I just bought another Ipod off ebay that is exact as mine except white- auction states the Ipod works fine, seller has awesome feedback, etc.. I bought this for a gift for my sister for Christmas. It is second hand, so warranty is expired.
I plug it in the computer, and first tried to transfer some normal text data via explorer. I had put this same data on my own black Ipod with no issues, words fine. The white? Lo and behold I get that "Data Cycle Redundancy" error during copy. My experience is that that has always meant that the original file is messed up, not the destination its being copied too... but in this case I know the original file(s) were/are ok.
And the Ipod freezes. So I safely unplug, and try to hard reset it. It wouldnt for a bit, and I noticed the Ipod was rather warm (but this might be because it was frozen for several minutes with the backlight still on as well). Finally I get it to reset. Same stuff happens again, again its hard to reset.
So then I decide screw it, forget adding the stuff via explorer, Ill just try to get the music on my computer at least, over via Itunes, after I first restore the Ipod.
Itunes opens... recognizes the Ipod... I go to copy music, and it copies until it essentially 'freezes'. I tried many times - its not a bad file because the same file would copy the other times Id try. It would freeze on any random file, during the write process.
Then Itunes comes up with this error:
"the ipod cannot be synced. the required file cannot be found"
I dont think this is referring to my files trying to be copied, they werent deleted or moved from their location since importing into the Itunes library. Im wondering if theres a system type file on the Ipod that Itunes speaks to as it transfers...and when the Ipod freezes... hence it cant be found...
At the same time I get this error from Itunes, I get a Windows XP bubble pop up that says:
"Delayed Write Failed - Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Now again, my computer/windows is NOT the issue. Its the Ipod.
All the advice I have searched says to fix things on my computer. That includes that Apple support page in regards to those errors - it points the finger at my USB ports, etc - and thats simply not the case. If it was, my other Ipod wouldnt be working either - nor would my flash drives.
    Its the white Ipod.
I saw one site suggest to format the Ipod via Windows first, then do the Itunes restore, but the Ipod froze and Windows couldnt format.
I went into Device Manager and compared the two Ipod settings, both share the same settings. They are not set on 'enable write cache'.
I have tested the HD via Diagnostics, and the BL blinked after the test, showing the HD passed... so right now I can only think of three things... a bad logic board perhaps, or the Ipod system files are corrupt somehow no matter how many times I do the restore... should I revert to an older update; is that even possible. Or the HD is bad after all and its just being missed in the test.
So now... I need help. Am I missing something important? Is it a simple fix... a corrupt file thats freezing the Ipod somewhere - or did I get a bad Ipod from the seller.
Its so close to Christmas, if there was some simple fix(instead of it being a bad HD) I could fix it myself, Id rather do that than go through the hassle of returns/refunds. Not to mention, its always a gamble how the seller will react. Will they help, or say its not a problem on their end and try to screw me... then Ill have to go through Paypal for reimbursement and that takes 90 days at least...

I wish I had good news but all I have is information. I have access to 4 5th gen ipods. 2 black 30s and 1 white 30 and 1 black 80. The one white and one of the blacks work and have worked flawlessly for the past two years. The other black 30 and 80 started having the issue mentioned here some time after upgrading to iTunes 8. I tried to lowlevel format the iPod drive to fix any issues and that didn't cure the problem. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago and restored my ipod to Mac format and low and behold it would accept files again! However it wouldn't let me fill the ipod beyond about halfway, this was on both ipods. Now the ipods have become slowly less and less fillable. Seems like syncing rather than putting the songs on manually seems to help, but again its getting worse all the time. (the two ipods that don't have any problems belong to my girls and the problem ones belong to my son and i) <- Grasping at straws I know, but my son and I are constantly changing the songs, playlists, videos and such.
When I bought my Mac the guys at the Apple store were shocked that I was having this problem and practically begged me to bring it in so they could see what it wrong with it. I will post an update when i do that.

  • Ipod freezing during connection to mac

I have a 3rd gen ipod and powerbook G4 with an external harddrive Lacie 80gb which now contains my itunes library. The problem I am having is in updating my ipod library. Each time I connect to the lacie drive (with firewire connection, it recognizes the ipod and starts to update it but it invariably freezes during this update. The ipod remains frozen as does the itunes program. I have to force quit the itunes and eject the ipod and then soft reset. When I then reattach it, it is not recognized by the itunes and I have to reinstall the update to get it to work. Unfortunately this erases all the music and I restart the process only to have it all happen again. I have tried manual update to no avail.
This may be related to the fact that I have moved my library to the external drive or that I am using the external firewire.
    Frustrated. Can anyone help?

    Hi John,
I have a very similar problem, but no solution yet. Maybe my experiences can sombody give some hint:
At home I have the G4 model displayed below. It is alway kept up to date. Last time my iPod was updated with the songs in the iTunes library there was around 6th December 05. Everything went fine then.
Next time I tried to update the iPod songlist, was about two weeks ago. The iPod would freeze this time, hanging and later crashing iTunes and the Finder (iPod could not be ejected). After several tries I thought it would be a good idea to restore the factory settings. So I tried that using the newest iPod Updater 2005-11-17. The Updater was not able to restore the settings. Finally I gave up.
Then I took the iPod to the office where I use a Mac Mini (it is kept up to date as well). I tried to restore the factory settings there and it worked like a charm. Back at home the iPod still would not sync with my PM G4. Listening to the sounds the iPod made during the first seconds of syncing revealed a repeated clicking as if the hard drive was bad.
So I took it to Apple's tech-geeks and told them the hard drive must have gone bad. They tested the iPod thoroughly, but did not find anything wrong. Especially the hard drive was ok.
Now I have it back here, but it still would not sync to my PM G4. Does anybody have any idea? I should perhaps mention, that the system on the PM has only been updated from 10.2 an, whereas the system on the Mini has been installed 10.4 out of the box.

  • 160GB ipod freezes during sync

I am trying to resync all of my songs & videos from Itunes to a 160GB ipod. When it gets to about 4GB, the ipod freezes and sync stops. I have tried resetting the Ipod, but it doesn't help. Any ideas?

I having a similar problem. Sometimes while my ipod is syncing or when I am deleting something, it freezes. I cannot close it at all. It doesn't effect the rest of the computer. I cannot get rid of it unless I restart the computer and I can't keep doing it, its becoming an annoyance. I've reinstalled 4 times and it doesn't seem to be working. PLEASE HELP!

  • IPod freezing during transfer

I recently updated my version of iTunes to 6.0.4 and since then I have been unable to update songs on my iPod (4th Gen 40 GB with click wheel). The iPod will just freeze at random points during the transfer and I cannot unmount from my computer. I end up having to just unplug it and resetting it. I have tried resetting it and then transferring songs, restoring it and then transferring songs, reformatting it to windows and transferring but to no avail. I have the latest version of the iPod Software and OS X. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Having the same problem on my PC with 4th gen. iPod/20GB. I don't know if this started when I updated iTunes or did the latest iPod updater, as I did them on the same day.
I consistently get through about 8 gigs (of 15 gigs) of the transfer (using Firewire) when the connection dies. What I have on the iPod at that point is all I get. To re-synch I have to re-format the iPod with the updater and reset the library.
This is insane. The iPod is 10 months old. I'm sure it's a software problem since before the iTunes/iPod update it seemed to work fine.
Unlike others on this thread, I'm not content to 'bin' the iPod every 10 months. If Apple will provide a fix for this, I'll happily re-consider my purchase of a video iPod, which I was looking into just as this happned. Right now, forget it. At least Microsoft supports their software with new updates after 90 days.

  • Itunes and ipod freeze during sync

    hello,
firstly, i would like to thank all you kind souls who post to this forum with very helpful suggestions. you have helped me with many past difficulties.
my present issue concerns transferring songs from itunes to my ipod (4th generation). here's the story:
on friday, my ipod started acting funny (skipping songs, etc.). by saturday, it would no longer do anything (folder with !, resetting did not help). this had happened to me before so i did not freak out and figured i just had to restore (that had worked the first time around). however, when i plugged in my ipod to my computer (powerbook g4, just three weeks old), it was not recognised and i was prompted to initialize the disk. i then came to this forum and read pretty much everything related to this kind of problem. countless resets, erases, partitions, etc., later, i was able to get the ipod software back on the ipod. it seemed all normal but there was no music on it (makes sense since i'd restored it). but then...when i plugged in my ipod to sync it with itunes, it would freeze at a given song (not always the same one, sometimes 31 songs into it, sometimes 500). i came back to this forum and read that i should reset my ports, which i did. didn't help, the sync still freezes both the ipod and itunes.
so that's where i'm at: i have the ipod software on the ipod, but i can't sync it with itunes (i.e. i can't get my music onto it). my brother thinks i have bad blocks (or sectors). is this a possibility? the ipod does make some noise (not sure whether it's the infamous clicking...).
    so here are my questions:
    1) is there anything i haven't done yet that could get the ipod to sync with itunes?
assuming i have done everything and the problem is with my ipod's hard disk:
    2) would a program like disk warrior potentially be able to fix the ipod?
    3) would it cost me less to have the ipod serviced than to buy disk warrior?
    4) is there somekind of open-source or freeware disk repair utility that could perhaps repair my ipod's disk?
thanks for reading and i really look forward to any suggestions.
    gen
p.s. the ipod's more than a year old, so no longer under warranty.

Okay, I got it to work tonight...
My U2 iPod would freeze while syncing. I restored and tried to sync and it would freeze on different song #'s. All the while I heard a clicking sound coming from the drive that I never noticed before. It would just click once in a while, not repeatedly.
My fix: (a version of the carpet drop) While the iPod was on and spinning, I held it tight with my right hand, facing me and smacked it's side into the palm of my left hand, simulating the amount of force that it would incurr from a waist-high drop onto carpet.
Now, this force was sheer approximation, being that it would be too time consuming and difficult to calculate this exact amount of force. I mean, my waist may be higher/lower than the original carpet-dropper, and not to mention the plushness of the carpet! Who knows if he did it on Shenandoah Shagg or maybe just some Bermuda Burr Rug?!
By the way, the problem started after being left out in the car on recent cold nights... hmmmm, my iPod thinks me a jerk.
Anyways, here are some previous attempts at fixing my situation (in no particular order):
    1) restored from 5 different iPod updates (2004-11-15, 2005-02-22, 2005-06-26, 2005-09-23, 2005-11-17)
    2) tried to fix with Disk Utility
    3) tried to fix with Tech Tool Pro
    4) tried to fix with Disk Warrior
    5) tried to initialize multiple time (even writing zeroes)
    6) manual sync

  • IPod freezes during sync every time

I've had my iPod fifth gen. for around two years now and it's only been recently that when i went to sync my songs it's unable to do so. I have all the latest software including for my iPod and iTunes. The iPod seems to be freezing when it reaches 3.99gb full of music. I've gone through the 5R's but to no avail, does anyone have any suggestions?

It can be some bad sectors on the hard drive of your iPod - which causing the problem. Try to do the following and hope it helps
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • IPod freezes during upload

Sometimes when I'm loading a track or a Podcast from iTunes to my iPod, it gets stuck. If I Force Quit out of iTunes, it freezes the computer. The only way out is to disconnect the iPod. However, if I start again, those tracks or Podcasts still won't load.
    Any ideas?

i've been looking for an answer to this same problem.
    found this: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050420230518243
basically, a mac can read and write in both macintosh coding, as well as windows coding. This means that an ipod formatted to a windows computer can be written on by both mac and windows, and the mac writes in windows coding. Apparently if your mac has a problem writing in macintosh code to the ipod, you can try having the mac write in windows code instead, and it should work.
if you want to do that, all you need to do is hook up your ipod to a windows computer. it will say 'hey man, this is a mac ipod, i cant work with this!' and it will ask you to reformat. i'm not sure yet, but reformating will probably make you lose all the songs on the ipod, but oh well. then once it's reformatted, hook it back up to the mac, and let the magic happen.
i havent tested this myself yet, but based on the link above, it has worked for several other people, and i am about to do it.
    good luck,
    Mr. Truth

  • IPOD freezes during play or turns off by itself or the music plays very slo

hey i had my ipod for almost 2 years now. its worked fine for awhile but recently, when i am playing my music it either
    1) shuts off and turns itself back on
    2) freezes and then the battery bar is reduced to nothing even after i charged it or
    3) while playing music, its sounds really really slow, kind like when cassette tape is messed up or you are playing music really slow.
    what should i do?

This just started happening to me today. I've had this iPod for about 7 months.
One thing I can think of, and it might not be much help, but I have not synced my iPod for a long time, since I rebuilt my system.
I have hesitated because I am afraid I might loss the contents of the iPod, so until I finish watching all my programs, I am hold tight.
Do you sync your iPod with your system frequently?

  • Ipod freezes during Restore process...it keeps restoring forever

I ve had very serious issues with itunes 7.
First, it didnt recognize the ipod, then after a few changes itunes finally recognized the ipod. Now after doing every recomendation in this forum I have no ipod showing in my computer (but its shown in the down right corner though as a usb mass storage).
When itunes recognizes it, it tells me I have to restore it and everything goes smoothly. But thats it...its says its being restored but it isnt. I ve wasted days trying to "restore" the ipod and it never ends.
I have no clue with this one, and yes, I did reinstall itunes a few times. I need some help please.

I cannot stand this. I got my new iPod mini silver today. Plugged it in, wasn't detected in iTunes. I tried again, and again. FINALLY, it was detected. Said it needed to be restored, because it was formatted for macintosh. I clicked okay. It restored for an hour. I Ctrl + Alt + Deleted iTunes and terminated the process. I formatted 'removable disk' using windows explorer. It gave me the folder/! icon. Then I tried again. It restored again, forever. Somebody really really really needs to fix this.

  • IPod 5G Freezes during Video Playback

iPod freezes during video playback. Does anybody else have this problem?
Usually freezes up about 10 minutes into a video, and then complety locks up. This usually requires 2 to 3 restarts untill it comes back working properly.

Mine does the same. It really only happens to me when I try to navigate thru menus when video is playing. I usually have to do a forced Reset. I truly think that introducing video on the iPod was not ready for primetime as it is very sluggish, buggy and sensitive during playbabck of video. No problems with music whatsoever but I am frustrated with the very finicky video qualities of this thing.

  • IPod freezes on iMac

I purchased an iPod 5th generation last year and it worked perfectly on Windows. Now that I have switched from PC to MAC, I have changed the operating system (with help from Apple Care).
The main problem is that when I try to import songs from an audio CD to the Ipod, the ipod freezes during the import process and crashes the iMac.

Thanks for responding deggie! My iMac freezes when I import my audio CD into iTunes. I have been working on this and have discovered that the computer does NOT freeze when I import an audio CD that is commercially mastered.
When I try to import audio CD's of music that I own that I burned to a CD, the computer freezes and subsequently makes multiple (up to 20) copies of the first track on the CD. This never happened with my PC. I am a composer and have my own music that I burn to a CD with the mp3 format. This version of iTunes 7.1.1. does not recognize the files as legit, I imagine.
I used to be able to convert the mp3 files to some I think was called AC on the PC version of iTunes. Since I am new to the MAC operating system I cannot navigate around to find that option if it still exists.
The good news is that I imported 4 commercial audio CD albums without freezing. The bad news is, I have an extensive library of music that I do not think will transfer.
    Thanks again for your help.
