IPod Llibrary duplication

Hi, I just moved my iTunes file from my PC to a MacBook Pro and while the file size of iTunes folder is correct (37GB) and all songs came over, each and every song that I transfered now has duplicate entries in my Library. Can anyone provide some insight as to how I can delete the extra file listings from my Library? Thanks.

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me? I'm trying to move my music library from my laptop to my pc. What is the best way to do that? I did a trial run by putting a couple of songs in a "music" folder on my ipod and then dragged them to my pc itunes library, but when I disconnected the ipod and clicked on the song itunes said it couldn't find the song. Can you tell me how you moved all your music?

  • Please save me months of work!!!

My last computer broke and i spent months when i got it re naming everything in itunes, as when i imported stuff it just said track 1 etc.
Now i have a new laptop and am faced with the prospect of spending months on it again, can anyone suggest any tips as to how i can save time???

This is one of the reasons I do all my stuff manually on iTunes. iTunes for some bazaar reason has crazy default setting that makes it very easy to "accidentally" delete stuff from the hard drive/iPod, make duplications of the library and other nutty stuff. iTunes can be a monster if you let it. Why doesn't iTunes add the artist to the filename for instance.
For a trouble free iTunes experience do everything manually. Some disagree, but let me tell you this, since I do everything myself, I know where my music is, it is not deleted by iTunes, I can move it anywhere I want, delete stuff off the iPod without it deleting from the hard drive..... the list goes on.

  • Why can't I delete songs on my ipod 5th gen in itunes? Why is there a duplication that's grey?

    Problems
    1. One of the albums I have on my ipod is duplicated, the duplication is grey and it will not let me delete it although it does not play on my ipod or on itunes either
    2. I cannot delete songs off my ipod from itunes, I have to go on my ipod and manualy delete them

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • Shared Library--One iPod--two XP users.... massive duplications!

Our iTunes is filling up with duplicate entries! My wife and I recently bought a new XP computer and uploaded our music collection to iTunes so that we could use the iPod w/dock as our main music source. I tried to set it up so that everything went to the "Shared Music" folder. I now find that our new iPod has formed a primary bond with my wife's library and not the shared library. Is there a way to change this? I'm hitting a lot of trouble with duplications--and I suspect it may have something to do with this.... Help!

Actually, I just figured out the answer to my own question. Apparently this is not possible with the shuffle. I don't know how to cross-post on these boards, but if anyone else is interested the relevant thread can be found by searching for:

  • Moving music from ipod nano 6th gen to a new itunes llibrary

I have an ipod nano 6th gen that was originally synced to a laptop which has broken. all the music is gone but is still on my ipod. how can i transfer this music to my new laptop? is there any free/trustworthy programs available or are there settings that i must set my itunes library to? Please help, this will benefit many of my family members.

Open the ipod_control folder then open the music folder. Copy each one of those folders onto your computer. You can do this by creating a new folder on your desktop and dragging the files into the folder.Open itunes and insert the new folder you created on your computer's desktop into: library ---> Music
You can now sync your ipod to this new computer with out losing all of your music.

  • Itunes song duplication on ipod

when transferred to my ipod, my itunes library multiplies several artists (same artist, same song, same album) in the display. I don't think its actually taking up more physical space on the harddrive, but the duplicity on the display is a bit annoying. any ideas?

You need to import the music into iTunes on the computer and then sync them to your iPod. See:

  • I have duplicative song files in my library that are grayed out.  This seems to cause a syncing problem to my ipod or iphone.  How can I clean up this mess?

I chose to let iTunes rearrange my files and it appears to have duplicated them in my computer's drive.  So now I have the same folders/files directly under my D drive (second computer hard drive) and also in the iTunes Music Folder that iTunes created.  Wasn't sure what to do so I did another import and now I have files in my library that are grayed out with the small i symbol in the circle next to them.  I also have the working (bolded) files too.  How can I clean this up?

Is there a way to override the 256kbps "conversion" when uploading to iCloud?
No. All music that is mirrored in the cloud will be AAC@256 Kbps.
    Musicman05 wrote:
Along the same lines, if I "download" a song from my library to my iPhone, then plug my iPhone into my computer and sync the song file from my computer, will the higher quality original file overwrite the 256 one?
No, because with iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device traditional syncing of music via USB is disabled. All music management is done directly on the device.
    Musicman05 wrote:
Also, if I want to syncronize another computer using iTunes match, how can I get the higher quality audio files?  Will I simply have to transport all of them by an exernal hard drive or thumb drive?
You will first have to copy the high-quality audio files to the computer, add them to the iTunes library then enable iTunes Match.

  • Laptop died. Had backup of ITunes Media Folder but now cant restore music to Ipod after ios5 upgrade!

Hi guys.  My laptop died a week ago and I managed to get the Itunes Media Folder copied off hard drive before it completely died.  Since then, loaded Itunes on my main PC for first time (ios5), authorised it and then pointed iTunes at the Itunes Media Folder.  Since trying to sync my Ipod Touch (which effectively had to be overwritten) I've noticed that most of my music on the iPod Touch is Greyed out.  Majority of the music was from Amazon and purchased CD's imported to Itunes.  All plays OK on iTunes but Ipod wont play 'em.
Any ideas guys?  Tried syncing about 8 times now.  Real pain in the bum!

I am getting a bit lost on what was done and exactly why you did it that way.  It looks to me like you use iTunes with standard preferences settings and you didn't so much move your media folder to the external drive as your whole iTunes library (everything in the top level folder including all the media files).  This should have been done simply by copying the iTunes folder from the old drive to the new one, renaming the AllMyiTunesMusic folder if you so desire, then starting iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and selecting that folder as the iTunes library to now start using.  Apart from the copy time when you could go away and drink a pot of coffee the actual labor time would be about 2 minutes.  I think you must have done something different which has kind of messed up your library and resulted in duplication of files.  Some of those folders such as Movies and the neighboring Music folder should be in the media folder, but don't move things about in Finder or iTunes may lose track of them and things will get worse.  If you can go back and do things properly then I recommend you do so, otherwise we can see what we can work with here.

  • Two iPods, Two sets of ratings, one music folder?

Here’s something which I’ve been failing to do, and about which I and can’t find any appropriate info in any forums. It seems like a very obvious thing to want to do…
We have one computer and two iPods. Most of our Playlists are ratings-driven. Eg. “500 3+star tracks that haven’t been played this month”. My girlfriend rates music differently to me. I don’t want her ratings affecting my playlists and visa versa.
The only way (as far as I can tell) to have one file of music and two sets of ratings is to use two libraries. This is achieved by holding down shift when starting iTunes and then choosing whichever library you want before syncing the iPod. So far so good.
The problem is, whenever I add new music I can only add it into one library at a time; the other library knows nothing about it. The same applies if I delete anything (the other library thinks the files still exist). The only way around this is to add/delete twice, which is a faff. Podcasts need to be downloaded twice as well. Also, I think, if I add a CD of music and then go into the other library and try and add it again (or point iTunes to the new mp3 files) it will create duplicates. In any case, it’s a lot of messing about.
So, any ideas on how I can have one big music folder and two iPods with different ratings without doubling my iTunes ‘admin’ time?
Any advice would be graetfully appreciated.

Thanks very much for your reply, but it doesn't look like there's a suitable option for me at the moment. I only want one music folder and I want all music accessible to both users/iPods, just with independent ratings. There appears to be a number of ways of doing this but none without a lot of duplication of effort. I have 95Gb of music which is constantly being added to and deleted from as buy new music and remove duplicates etc. I put a fair amount of time into refining ratings and playlists in order to improve the quality of the stuff I listen to and I don't want to start making lists of the things I add/delete and then have to log into another iTunes session to repeat the exercise. It seems a shame that iTunes can't offer a practical solution to the notion that two people might have slightly (not completely) different tastes in music. I'm certain this sort of thing will have to be looked at in future, especially now there are plenty of iPod families out there.
Thanks again to all of the above for your replies.

  • ICal on Mac desktop to iPod Touch syncing problem

I have events on my iPod Touch that will not sync to my Mac OS 10.6.8 desktop.
What I've done that may have caused this:
I got a new MacBook for Christmas and so I tried syncing all 3 with iCloud, but that caused duplicate events
I tried only using MacBook & iPod Touch for sycing with iCloud and then directly syncing from my iPod with USB to my desktop, but it stopped syncing (later I found that my cord needed to be replaced, but I'm not sure if that was the problem - I was still dealing with some duplicate events, too)
I decided to stop using iCloud (I can do without using my iCal on my MacBook if there's no ideal solution to sync all 3 without duplications or other problems) and now my iPod Touch syncs well with my desktop for most items, but not all
I think my desktop thinks the events that are syncing have already been synced because they were in the past. The one that was important that I missed today, which is on my desktop (a repeating event) but is no longer on my iPod Touch, refuses to sync to my desktop. There may be more that I haven't noticed.
I thought maybe I could wipe my iPod Touch calendar and then sync my desktop to my iPod Touch, but I'm afraid that it might wipe my desktop as I don't know how to tell it to only go one way in syncing rather than acting as if it's a new program.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Be sure you've set your iPod to the correct time zone (ie, same as your computer). If you're on the East Coast it's three hours ahead of Apple HQ's time zone. A 5:00pm appointment in New York is at 2:00pm to someone using a Californian clock. Make sure your Touch isn't a Californian clock.

  • Sync ipod doesn't work if songs on network drive

To consolidate redundant files, I moved MP3s from 3 computers on our home network to a shared network drive. (It's on a NAS.) I used WMP to edit the ID3 tags. All users have access to \\nas1\public\music as a mapped drive, M:. I deleted my kids' iTunes folders from each computer and re-imported all music from the network location, not copying files.
    Two problems result:
    1. Importing does not import the album art. That must be restored manually by copying the jpeg file from the folder on the network drive. That's a lot of work. I surmise that WMP copies the album art as a separate file and displays it if in the same directory, while iTunes requires a reference in the id3 file itself. Am I correct? (The latter seems a better design.)
    2. My kids' iPods won't sync to their local computers, even though iTunes plays fine. Will iTunes sync only if the file is stored physically in the library? Doing so replicates everything resulting in massive file duplication.
Another question, related to 2., above:
If I were to set up a network media server that's discoverable by iTunes (most likely Firefly, http://www.fireflymediaserver.org), can mp3's available there be synced to the ipods?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Duplication Issues with Photo Sync via iTunes/iPhoto and Photo Stream/iCloud (Detailed Scenario Given)

    Hi Everyone,
I'd like to share an issue I am having with photo syncing between my iDevices.
Here is how I USED to sync my Photos between my iDevices (no issues with photo duplication)
Note: In this scenario, I use iTunes and iPhoto on my Mac. iCloud and Photo stream have NOT been activated in this case.
    1. Take photos via iPhone that saves in Camera Roll
    2. After a month or so, I will connect my iPhone to my Mac.
    3. Import my Photos in iPhoto and arrange  Events and Photos in monthly sections and add some of them in a separate Albums (ex. Written Notes Photos) for easy access.
    4. Once the import is done, iPhoto prompts an option to delete photos in my Camera Roll which I do as I like to start a fresh month with empty Camera Roll in my iPhone.
    5. In order to access the Photos I have imported in iPhoto in my iPhone, I go to iTunes and sync all my photos to my iPhone. This syncs my events, photos, faces, albums as they have been arranged in iPhoto in my Mac. (I cant delete them in my iPhone once they are synced. I have to delete in my iPhoto and sync again to have similar setup in my iPhone which isn't a problem).
NOW I decided I don't want to manually go through all this process and went on to enable the Photo Stream ON in my iPhone and iPhoto with iCloud.
THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM ENSUES.
    1. I  Take photos with my iPhone that saves in Camera Roll
    2. This automatically syncs with my Mac due to Photo Stream which a really convenient.
    3. It syncs automatically to Photo Stream, Events, Photos, Faces section in the iPhoto and I put put some of them (notes) in a separate album.
    THE PROBLEM:
The Photos does not show up in the Album, Events and Photos Folder in my iPhone. They are only shown in Camera Roll. So I thought to sync using iTunes so the new Photos will be arranged in their appropriate folder like it used to with my prior process of syncing. This worked, HOWEVER the photos in my iPhone started showing DUPLICATES! Apparently, one comes from Photo Stream (which, if I delete on my phone also deletes in all my iDevices) and the other duplicate is from the iTunes sync (this sets up my photos as arranged in iPhoto which is what i WANT to happen as Photo Stream does not sync them accordingly).
SOLUTION I AM IN SEARCH FOR:
I want to be able to take photos with my iPhone that automatically syncs in iCloud AND iPHOTO AS ARRANGED IN MY MAC (Albums, Events etc) WITHOUT PROBLEM OF PHOTO DUPLICATES.

Other folks have resolved similar issues by trashing  the iPod Photo Cache.

  • Some ipod songs are not displayed in itunes

I discovered several duplicated songs on my ipod touch, so I connected to itunes (PC), but the duplicated songs were only listed once when viewing the ipod music in itunes. While in itunes, viewing my ipod music, I erased all the music on my ipod and itunes then displayed no listing of any song on my ipod. When I check directly on my ipod, there are still 36 songs on the ipod. These are the ones that are dupilicated when I sync the ipod to itunes. How can I get rid of this duplication, or, How can I completely erase all songs from my ipod?

did you solve the problem? I have the same issue.

  • IPod mini to transfer music

My son got a 5th gen iPod nano and wants to copy only his music from his iPod mini into iTunes on his PC, then from his PC into his new nano. He deleted his music from his PC to avoid duplication of files on transfer, but now he found that he can't copy his music from his mini into iTunes on his computer. Is there any way to get just his music library off his iPod mini into his iTunes on his PC, and then transferred to his nano? The only thing that I can find online is using the mini as a mass storage device and copying my entire music library off my computer which includes many songs that he does not want, or burn a backup CD of my entire music library and then load it onto his PC, again with many songs that he does not want. Is there any way to burn a CD directly off his mini or nano if a direct transfer from mini to PC can't be done? His iTunes version is version 7.
