IPod Mini error (Delayed write failed)

Whenever I update songs to my ipod mini it copys about 43 songs until a delayed write failed error message shows up. I'm not able to copy more songs. Any help would be appreciated.

I used to get this error:
http://saltypickles.com/itunes.jpg
I never did fix the problem... it didn't matter witch USB port I used I would get that error, sometimes after 10 songs, sometimes after 200... I couldn't reformat with it either. When I posted here about it, I was told to try Firewire, unfortunaly I didn't have any Firewire ports. So I fought with it until I got the music on it.. then I left it alone and bought an iMac... not suggesting to buy an iMac, but I am suggesting it could be the USB ports on your computer. Could be there are not fast enuf (such as USB 1) or they may not be powered... are you using a USB port from a hub? or on the front of your computer? Make sure you have it plugged into one on the back.

TrevorQ's idea works great! Thanks! I had already gone and gotten my second nano 4GB and the same thing happened both times after using the updater - called support on first and they had no answer. Thanks a bunch - was starting to lose hope after it happened again on the second one. Must be a problem with the updater 4-23-06 and the newest ITunes upgrade.
If you have trouble with the right click - after the ipod is highlighted then click on the file menu and play the waiting game again - format should appear in the menu after an extended wait. Good luck all!

    Hi
You mean you cannot copy the files from computer to HDD but you are able to copy the files from HDD to computer?
This means that you are still able to access the HDD and that HDD is working fine
Maybe its a matter of HDD file system?
The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GB.
Larger files needs another formatting type like NTFS.

  • Windows XP SP3 and Time Capsule Delayed Write Failed

I am having difficulty getting my MacBook Pro to back up to my Time Capsule.
    TC is 1TB.
    Works fine with OSX.
XP SP3 on wireless network allows full internet access and print sharing and also allows very small backups (i.e. one or two documents in a folder) without a problem.
When I try to do a few folders (let alone a full back up) I get an error - Windows delayed write failed.
As I can do small backups I think that this rules out a problem communicating with the TC and also any issues with the formatting of the drive (I have left it as it came from apple - although a right click on the drive states FAT32).
I have a poor work around which is to use Macdrive to mount my OSX disc and backup to that. Reboot into OSX and let time machine take care of the rest.
Very messy but also rules out a size problem and I suspect that this also rules out any problems with the backup utility (Microsoft XPs own)as I don't get the same error with this "networked" drive
I have spent some time looking for ways to fix this and the windows support site suggested disabling a cache option under properties if you right click the drive. This option is not available for the TC as properties only give you information on the free space.
I am now at a loss as to what to do to make this work

    Kappy,
Thanks for taking to time to reply.
I don't believe that the TC is FAT32 formated as it is working fine with OSX and I have not formated the drive from how it shipped from apple - which I guess is Mac OS Extended as you described - Have just checked and it is indeed Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
What you suggest with winclone is effectively what I am doing using MacDrive (which allows me to mount the OSX disc in XP and write directly to it).
Is there not a way to back up straight from XP without going via OSX (the literature on TC would suggest this is possible).
I had looked at retrospect to use as a backup instead of XPs own but think I will have the same problem with disc caching. It is not that I cannot write to the TC (as I can in small sizes) its just that I get the error delayed write failed if I try to do a full back up.

  • IPod won't sync, gives 'Delayed Write Failed' error.

I've had my iPod classic 80gb, for roughly a year now, and I never really had any permanent issues with it, until last week. I plugged it into my laptop and left it on over night. I wake up in the morning and all my songs and videos were gone. iTunes was reading the data as 'Other'. Overnight, without me doing a single thing, everything was gone. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and all the files were gone. Completely. Space had been returned.
I painstakingly put my songs back in that afternoon. The next day, I plugged the ipod into my office computer, and tried to sync my podcasts. After syncing about 20 files, iTunes froze. Then a yellow bubble popped up saying 'Delayed Write Failed' after which it wipes out everything I was able to sync.
I've done everything, from restoring the ipod, to re-installing iTunes to formatting the disk to straight up performing a chkdsk. As i speak right now, my laptop won't boot up after i performed the last chkdsk, which told me i had a bunch of invalid sectors or some other. For one week, I've searched the net and it seems no-one has a solution to this.
Any help? I don't have an Apple store in my country, and I don't want to believe that i have to get a replacement.

    1st - Sorry I can't help you.
I also have iPod Classic 80gb and have had no trouble till two days ago (11/08). I connected my iPod and it showed up as a source in iTunes but none of my music was shown. I reconnected it and same thing, I checked for update for iPod but it said it was up to date. I then used iTunes to restore my iPod to factory settings. It went through the process and restarted but after that would never show up as a source in the iTunes window.
When I connect the iPod to my PC it detects the USB Device as an iPod right way (so it doesn't seem to be a USB Driver issue) but then the "Auto-Play" window shows up and it makes my PC slow way down and then eventually I see the "Windows Delayed Write Failed" error mesage in the task bar. If I check My Computer it shows the iPod as a drive.
I've done everything listed in Apples Support Page for this, from restoring the iPod, to re-installing iTunes, clearing temp folder and old registry files, updating iPod Service in MsConfig. I have also tried to sync the iPod with my other PC and see the same error so it seems the iPod is corrupted. I don't know anyway to restore factory settings again since it won't show up in iTunes anymore. I've searched the net and it seems no-one has a solution to this.

  • IPod Classic 80g..message 'Delayed write failed?? Will not sync to itunes!

This message appears when I try to connect to my pc...
'Delayed write failed. Windows is unable to save all the data for the file J:\ipod_control. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failiure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere'
    Ok..
A: I know the 'J' is the drive it is assigned too...I have been to admin and changed it....No luck
B: I have found the actual file in the hidden folders but cannot move it or save it elsewhere as it suggests....
C: I have reset and at one point factory restored through itunes.....
D: I have even been into the system start up sequence and set it up for ipod and itunes only.....
Am I being silly or is there a solution???
Please can somebody shed some light as to what to do...
    Ta muchly
    Chris

My husband's 80GB iPod had the same problem a few months ago...turned out it was due to corrupted album artwork. Try unchecking the box "Display artwork on this iPod", close iTunes, reconnect iPod to iTunes and then recheck the box "Display album artwork on this iPod". Once I did that, the iPod loaded perfectly and no more error messages.
    Hope this helps!

  • "Delayed Write Failed" - iTunes won't read iPod Classic

Having problems getting my fathers xmas present working (80gb Classic).
I have re installed the latest version of itunes, my 30gb 5th gen iPod works fine, when connecting the Ipod classic i get a popup saying "Delayed Write Failed", saying 'failure of computer hardware or nework'. Also 'Unable to save data'.
How can i beat this sucker?

    *Disable wite-behind caching*
Right-click on your iPod in *My Computer* and select Properties and then the tab that says Hardware. Highlight the selection that says *Apple iPod USB Device* and select Properties. Under the tab that says Policies make sure that *Optimize for quick removal* is checked.
If you've had one of these errors then it's posible you have one or more corrupt files on your iPod. To be on the safe side you should check the drive for errors thus:
    *Checking hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) .

  • Ipod not syncing with itunes. delayed write failed message

yes i know there are already posts with similar problems but i cant find any with working answers...if answers at all. so sorry if this annoys you but im helpless.
i have a 80gb ipod classic (with the click wheel thing) and whenever i connect it to my pc it comes up on the my computer screen under devices with removable storage. . I can go through files etc as i have disk use enabled but for some reason it wont show up on iTunes. i have had the ipod for about 6-7 months and before everything would work fine. just recently it started playing up and wont appear on itunes. i did the 5 R's thing but no luck.
also i formatted the ipod and then it shows up on itunes but tells me restore to factory settings...which i follow i let it do everything but then nothing happens and then it doesnt appear in itunes as it said it would.
oh yh i also get a message pop up out of the task bar saying 'delayed write failed' while the ipod is plugged in my pc is very very slow until the write delayed message shows up. then after this message i get a message in itunes saying ipod was detected but couldnt be identified. something along those lines.
there is also a file in my ipod sayin metadataneverindex. it is 0kb so could it be that which is causing the problem. as far as i have read here and there that it is for mac but i use windows xp. is this the problem?
im at my wits end as i use my ipod a lot and would really really appreciate if anybody could help me out.

Go to iTunes>Store and Authorize the computer. It will say if it is authorized when you try to authorize it again.
Is the the computer you last synced with? You did not answer that question.

  • Windows - Delayed Write Failed - NANO

Here is what is going on with my brand "new" NANO:
    Brand new black Nano 4GB.
    Install most update Itunes.
Install most update Ipod Updater (2006-03-23).
Connect Ipod Nano - and open Updater which just freezes with the on screen message "initalizing" and nothing happens.
Now the minute you disconnect the Nano, then we get the message in the system tray..."Windows - Delayed Write failed" with a bunch of other grabage and then updater says connect Ipod.
Now here is what I tried; uninstalled itunes and updater 5 times and the same results; used different USB (6 of them) same results, resetted Nano, same result; installed fresh everything on my Dell Laptop just to rule out running 2 Ipods on same machine; same result on the laptop; and so on.
The kicker is my Ipod Mini works like a champ on this machine with no issues at all.
I'm lost so the ultimate fix I think will be to take it back to Best Buy where I got it on Tursday and get a "new" one unless someone has a fix.
    Bad Nano, Bad Nano

TrevorQ's idea works great! Thanks! • Delayed Write Failed - and now it can't start Windows

    Help!
I'm in big trouble! I was using my Tecra 9100 (running XP Service Pack 2) and was looking at some of the files I had stored on my memory stick. I selected 'safely remove hardware' and pulled my memory stick out when I was finished. All of a sudden my laptop starts to run slowly and an error message popped up saying 'Delayed Write Failed'.
This is a first for me, and I don't know why this popped up. I read what it had to say below the error - 'Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Kaspersky (can't remember the exact name but it was to do with Kaspersky). The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.'
My laptop became so slow it was unresponsive (although I could move the cursor around) and remained so for 10mins. I tryed Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing happened. As I could't shutdown Windows, I was forced to hold the power off button for a few seconds to immediately switch it off. Upon switching my laptop back on, I noticed my bootscreen took about 15sec more than before and the blue screen showed up saying 'Windows needs to check your disk for constincency.'
An hour or so later I logged back into my computer and noticed my cursor was rather jumpy and not as smoothe as before. It just wasn't right and about an hour or so later the same error popped up again and my laptop froze. After another power off, the blue screen showed up again saying 'Windows needs to check your disk for constincency' and this time I waited around 4 hours!
When it was finally done, my laptop restarted automatically and the blue screen showed up again! This time cancelled the disk check and when straigh to the log in screen. I logged in and noticed the laptop wasn't up to speed as it was usually with the mouse being jumpy still. I decided to restart the laptop only to see the blue screen again.
I let it go this time and just waited for it to scan. after about 20mins nothing appeared to be happening in the scan so I powered off. Now my computer is seriuosly messed up. When I switched it back on the screen which says Last know good configuration and start windows normally showed up.
Now no matter what I select my laptop just restarts and says cannot proceed due to corrupt or damaged file in \Windows\System. You can attempt to repair this problem by inserting the Windows set-up disk.' Whats the Windows set-up disk?
My laptop is second hand and came with no recovery disks ect. and has XP Pro already installed so i dont have disk. what on earth shall i do?
help will be very appreiciated. thanx.

Sounds like a mean software crash to me. I understand you need to rescue your data before you delete all your files and proceed with a recovery.
What I would do in your situation (did it actually some days ago on a friend's notebook), is:
    1) remove the hard drive from my laptop (it's not that hard to do it yourself)
    2) purchase an empty external housing for a 2.5" drive to USB (about 10 US$)
    3) Install the removed drive into that new housing
    4) Backup all my important data at my Office/Friends Computer through the new adapter (you have access to all data areas of the hard disk through USB). Keep the HDD even leveled during this procedure as it might be a damaged drive due to wear and tear of the motor bearing... In such incidents you can hear a changing noise while altering the level of the drive during operation. Maybe you have to keep it in a vertical position to minimize the noises during the final rescue process of your data.
Finally once everything is restored, I would:
    5) reinstall the Drive back into the notebook (in order to test its functionality) and do a proper recovery-CD installation.
    6) Purchase a new spare drive and have it ready, just in case the old drive reveals as broken.
This is the easiest and most safe way to rescue your data.
You might ask yourself: What caused this to my notebook:
    Here are some possible reasons:
    - a Virus/malware/incompatible program (30 % chance)
    - a broken hard disk (does it sound strange (noisy) lately?) (45 % chance)
    - a HDD controller/motherboard problem (10 % chance)
    - bad moment like an instant power loss or another undefined reason (15 % chance)
    Good luck,
    electroch@in
BTW, my friend was very happy to have his broken 60GB Toshiba drive replaced with a new more silent 120GB Samsung drive.

  • T410: Getting 'Windows Delayed Write Failed' after applying updates

    I have a T410. A 2522-AN4. Running Windows XP/Pro.
I have the System Update process running. Every week I get notification of any updates, etc. that I may need to attend to.
On 10/29 the pop-up came up. There were a number of updates in the 'Optional' category.
    I installed them all.
As soon as I rebooted the machine, I started received these 'Windows - Delayed Write Failed' popups. Basically the popup window names a file and indicates that 'Windows was unable to save the data for the file C:......'. Almost every boot up would give me one of those for a file with a name that ended in .....crmlog. Sometimes that would be the only message I got. Other times I might get one or two more popups during my use of the machine. Sometimes when printing which would have a file that ended in ....SPL. I never received these errors before applying these updates. I ran a CHKDSK on my drive. It was clean. I ran the HDD diagnostics from the boot menu. Ran perfectly. I did a defrag of my C: drive. No problems. I tried disabling Write Caching on the C: drive. Didn't help. I'm pretty much left to believe that one of these updates I applied has exposed me to this issue. Now the question is which one? And what do I do about it?
Here is what was installed on 10/29:
ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility US                                       1.32-1.12
Intel HD Graphics Driver for Windows XP(GM55)            6.14.10.5292
Intel Pro/1000 LAN Adapter Software for Windows XP   11.5.10.1030
Intel AMT 6.0-MEI and SOL Driver                                        6.0.0.1179D
Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver for Windows 32 bit        9.6.0.1014
Conexant Audio Software for Windows 7/Vista and XP   4.95.48.0(Win7/Vista)/3.66.146.0(XP)

    ThinkPad UltraNav Utility                                                       2.13
    ThinkPad Power Manager                                                     1.88
    ThinkVantage Communications Utility                                1.42
ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows XP       5.72
    Presentation Director                                                              4.56
ThinkPad Hot Key Features Integration Package Setup 3.11.0001
Intel Wireless WiFi Link for Windows XP                           13.03.0000
Thanks for any help or advice!

OK, that makes sense. That is the driver for the controller for the hard drive?
I double checked in Device Manager. I was at 9.6.0.1014.
According to the Lenovo site that is the latest. I also checked the Intel site and it also listed that same version as the latest.
So I did a Rolback of the driver. That seemed to go with no problems.
Restarted. Got the same error on that .....crmlog file during startup.
So I went back in and now I turned Write Caching back ON for my C: drive.
Restarted. No error on ...crmlog this time. I'll keep running and see if any more pop up.
I think I'm also going to look for some Lenovo diagnostics that run under Windows. I think I saw those.
Does the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility US that also got installed on 10/29 actually update my BIOS?
That was the other area that looked concerning.
I'll keep you posted. I think we are on the right path here. Although I did have some hard drive trouble when I first got the machine in August. The tech I worked with said that there had been some known problems with the hard drives (320GB) in these machines. But it seems to have run fine since I got past that.
    I'll keep you posted.

  • Windows Delayed Write Failed Message

Okay, I've had my iPod classic 80GB working perfectly until a couple days ago, when I plugged it in. iTunes froze up, and wouldn't start back up, until a message came from the bottom right service bar saying "Windows- Delayed Write Failed Message, failed to write to G:/iPod_Control, all data erased, hardware" or something of the sort. Naturally, I assumed the worst, went to My Computer, and formatted the iPod, went back to iTunes, it recognized the iPod, however, it refuses to sync anything, bringing the Windows Delayed Write Fail message in the corner, and then it doesn't recognize the iPod. I've formatted, restored, reset the iPod several times now, and this is really getting frustrating. I even did the hard drive check (My Computer, the one that goes in phases or something), and still nothing. Please help! This is really getting frustrating. Thanks!

    *Disable write-behind caching*
Right-click on your iPod in *My Computer* and select Properties and then the tab that says Hardware. Highlight the selection that says *Apple iPod USB Device* and select Properties. Under the tab that says Policies make sure that *Optimize for quick removal* is checked.
Alternatively this registry hack appears to let you disable write-behind caching across the entire file system.
When restoring an iPod it may also pay to use this method to put the data back on in stages.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • "Delayed Write Failed" message

Hi.  I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if this has already been discussed.
I have an X61 Lenovo Thinkpad.  I have an external drive that is connected via USB cable.
My laptop is only a month old.  I have had no problems with it until now.
I cannot use my external drive now because the laptop doesn't recognize it.
When I do plug it in, it takes a while for it to boot up.  Minutes, actually.
I did get a "Delayed Write Failed" message a couple of days ago.
The window said, "Dealyed Write Failed.  Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\System Volume Information."
Can someone please help me?  I would like to have my external drive connected to my laptop.
    Thank you!

Please, someone help me.  I really would like to solve this problem.  I am unable to use my external drive, which I really need to use right now.
I did call Support, but he just told me to download all the Microsoft updates, all the Windoes updates, all of the ThinkVantage updates, all the Lenovo updates.
I am not sure if I should do that.  I bought my computer directly from Lenovo last month, so shouldn't it already be updated?  If not, how do I know what to update?
If someone has a help line or a support line, I would love to call it for help.
The problem is my laptop will not recognize my external drive anymore.  If I unplug the external drive, it works fine, but I cannot access my external drive.
Everything else works; my wireless keyboard and mouse, my security software key, my USB foot pedal.  Everything expect for the external drive.
I have a feeling that it is because of that "Delayed Write Failed" mesage, saying Windows was unable to save all the data for the file e:\System Volume Information.
*** My external drive does work on my other laptop, so that's why I think it's something with this X61 Lenovo Thinkpad.
    PLEASE help.  Thank you!
