IPod no longer connects over FireWire

I have a 20 GB iPod with click wheel, which I think I purchased in 2004. I sync it with a Power Mac G5 dual 2.5GHz. I've never been able to sync it over USB, and according to Apple that's a known problem with this iPod and a G5...but up until a week or so ago, syncing over FireWire worked fine.
Now it doesn't. If I plug the iPod into my G5 with its FireWire cable, it starts to charge but the machine doesn't mount it. I get the same result plugging it into my MacBook via FireWire, but it works fine with USB. Initially I thought it might be the cable, but I got a replacement cable and the same thing happened.
Any idea what might be going on?

Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.

  • IPod mini not syncing over firewire

Hello! I have a 4th gen iPod that I sync over firewire. I recently bought a mini for the wife. If I connect over USB, iTunes will recognize and I can sync ok. However, if I try to use the same firewire connection, it will charge, but iTunes does not see the Mini. It would be nice to use one connection for both.
Any ideas on what to try?

I've done the too late at night posting thing a time or two myself.
The mini probably syncs over USB (but I don't remember for sure) so you could try using just the USB cable.
    Best of luck.

  • Ipod G3 no longer syncs over FireWire

My older Ipod G3 (the one with four buttons above scroll wheel) no longer syncs to iTunes over FireWire. In fact the iPod will not show up at all over FireWire any longer?
It syncs over USB tough. But being G3 it cannot charge over USB and my battery is almost dead so I really need FireWire to work.
    * It will charge over FireWire
    * I have to differnet FW cables both showing same problem (and they have worked before)
    * It sync over USB
    * I have reset iPod
    * It has worked before... (it's been sitting in the dock connected to my stereo in the living room)
I'm now thinking that either 10.5.3 or 10.5.2 update may have changed something in OS X to get this behaviour?
That is the only thing that has changed since I last tried to update this ipod (that I can think of)
    /Roger

I know someone with a Power Mac G5 and a third gen iPod, and it works as expected under Leopard 10.5.3. We were messing around with it last week (iPod was sitting idle for a while and we got it working). So if it's a problem caused by OS upgrades, it is not a universal problem. If you have an alternate boot drive (or partition), you can see if a fresh install of Leopard (plus updates) makes a difference.
If it syncs over USB and charges over FireWire, you can continues to use it, although you will not be able to charge and sync at the same time with the standard cables. I don't think you will be able Restore from iTunes either, without the FireWire connection.
If you find that this problem is a hardware problem on the iPod's logic board, this special cable with two ends (FireWire and USB) may allow you to charge and sync at the same time.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A
It's meant for Windows PC users without FireWire (only USB) who want to use the 3G iPod, so they can charge (through FireWire connected to wall adapter) and sync (through USB) at the same time, and use Restore in iTunes.

  • After iOS5 update, iPod no longer connects to car stereo

    Hi,
my husband and I both have an iPod touch 4th generation.
We also have a Dodge Caravan with a car stereo, that lets up hook up the iPods and control them over the display. The cable does not charge the iPods, but we knew that.
I have updatedt my iPod a while ago and never encountered any problems with the car stereo.
My husband updated his iPod to iOS5 today, and the car stereo does not connect via the cable. On the iPods display it just says, an error has ocurred.
Would that be a hardware issue? The iPod is a month or two past warranty. We already tried restarting and resetting the iPod (not to factory settings).
Is there maybe a way, to return the iPod to iOS4?
    Thanks for any help

Sometimes, when you cannot "see" your ipod, it is because the drive that was assigned to the ipod, when you connected it, is already being used by the other devise. Your ipod is connected, but is "under" the other item, which means that you have to disconnect that item, so that you can "see" it. It will not be one of the drives that are normally associated with the computer like the C drive, or the ones assigned to your disc drives. It would be a drive that was assigned to an external devise, or another USB devise. This may or may not be your problem, but it is worth a shot.

  • I9900 no longer working over Firewire

I just updated to Leopard this afternoon, and went to print something, only to find out that my Canon i9900 is not showing up as an available printer. It shows up and works just fine if I hook it up with USB, but it no longer is detected over Firewire. I prefer Firewire only because of my current shortage of open USB ports.
Now, Apple lists the i9900 as being supported and shipping with drivers in Leopard, but could it be that only USB is available now? When I manually installed the drivers under Tiger, it set up a "network" in the printer utility called "Canon IJ Network". This is still showing up in Leopard, but there is no printer listed.
The printer is turned on, has paper loaded and all ink tanks are full. Permissions are freshly repaired and everything else appears to be in working order. No other programs have been installed since the Leopard upgrade. Any help would be appreciated!

I figured it out myself. To get it to work with Firewire, you need to go to Canon's website and download the latest drivers for Mac OS 10.4. They are older than the current ones in Leopard, but include the necessary Firewire drivers.
After they install, it will be available via Firewire! Hope this helps somebody else out.

  • Ipod won't connect via firewire, only usb

My clickwheel ipod decided to stop connecting via firewire. I reset it, and the restored it, and reinstalled itunes. Nothing worked. I then took out the USB cable from the box (for the first time in almost 3 years) and it works perfectly.
While trying to connect via firewire, it either doesn't show up in itunes or updates about halfway through and then stops and says error -124.
    Any ideas? thanks

3rd gen ipod won't connect to itunes with firewire. USB connects rarely but drains battery quickly. I've rebooted the ipod and computer and updated itunes. No effect. Any remedies besides buying a new ipod.

Answer to Question 1: - I connected the iPod with the USB, went to Disk Utility and erased the iPod. Now the iPod works with USB.
Question 2 is still unanswered. Ideas?

  • 3rd gen iPod won't connect with firewire...how can I restore it?

As many others have had this problem, my iPod only charges when connected with firewire. When I connect with USB, it says "Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings"
When I try the iPod Software Updater, it says I need to connect via Firewire.
Question 1: Any ideas on how to restore the iPod?
Question 2: Any ideas on how to get the firewire functional again?
    Many thanks in advance

  • IPod no longer connecting to PC

My iPod is no longer recognized when it is connected to my PC. I connect it with a firewire cable (not sure where my USB cable went). It is able to charge through the cable and the screen lights up when it is connected but neither my PC nor itunes recognize it and it doesn't display the "do not disconnect" message.
It used to work perfectly connecting this way and I have not made any major changes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not here to help you, on the contrary, I'm having the same (or at least, a similer) problem.
My iPod (4TH Gen) used to work fine. One day iTunes tells me something like: iTunes has detected a iPod in recovery mode... having backed up my music before, I now pressed the recover button. It then told me to connect the iPod to the wall outlet charger. I did so. But after connecting it to my PC again, it started all over, telling me to recover... I repeated the process, and again it didn't work.
Somehow after a good few times it gave in, and started working. But only two days passed, and there you go once again. I'm caught in the trap of this never ending cycle, and I see no way out.
    Go figure.

Got home yesterday to find that my iPod only connects to my WiFi when I'm right in front of the hub (BT). I can no longer get WiFi on my iPod anywhere in the house (where I always had 2 bars of signal), but all other devices (tablet, phone, xbox, laptop) work fine. • My Ipad2 (and Ipods) No longer Connect to my Wireless

I have reset the router, reset the internet.....everything else in my house (Cell Phones, Laptops, Mac, Kid's PC, XBOX, Wii, DS) all connect effortlessly.  My Ipad and Ipod did as well until 2 weeks ago.  Has there been some update that has screwed this up?  It is rough when My Ipad wil connect to any Wifi signal at a random location but won't connect to my home network any longer.
    This is what I've tried:
    Resetting internet

  • MythTV - Getting Motorola DCT 6200 box to connect over FireWire

I have a fresh 64-bit install of Arch and I've installed MythTV. I plugged in my Motorola DCT-6200 HDTV set top box via FireWire to my HTPC. MythTV does not list the FireWire as a capture option. And, to be honest, I have no idea what else to do at this point. I understand this is probably going to take a lot of effort but if I could simply get pointed in the right direction, that would be great. Thanks!

I've used an old 500GB HD I had and it works fine. Many drives will work other than what's listed on Verizon's list.  Stay away from "Green" drives, as they may power down at times which you do not want.
I kept trying to connect this drive multiple times, thinking it was not recognized because the space available did not change. It took me a while to realize that a new 2nd tab appeared for the 2nd drive!  Toggling over to the right to select this tab would then show the available space on the external HD.  My prior provider, Cablevision, did not work this way.  Their software combined both HD's into one total storage display amount.  So, check to see if you've got the 2nd tab.  If not, then it is not being recognized.  Might be worth trying another cable.
