Ipod not reconised by computer

Please help,
After a couple of months of my laptop and Ipod working in harmony, my Laptop all of a sudden decided that it wouldn't recognise my Ipod as an Ipod. When I connect it it now brings it up as a mass storage device at the bottom corner of my computer.
The only place i can find it thereafter is in my device manager where it lists it under disk drives as an Ipod device and also under the USB hubs as a mass storage device. It is not listed under any volumes (atates that it is unassigned) and when I try and change it in the computer manager to another volume (F for example) it won't let me!
I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything a million times and still no luck. I can't reset it or reformat the ipod with the ipod downloads as it is not reconised as an IPod so cannot be 'mounted'.
I recently lost the use of my CD and DVD drives since installing itunes on my Laptop (Packard Bell) and had to take it to a shop (pay a fortune) and have a new version of XP saved over the last one which solved the problem. This may have something to do with the loss of the ipod!??
If anyone has any ideas PLEASE help. I bought the ipod as I am stuck in a remote part of Norway for 4 months contract with work so I could download and listen to the recent music from back home and stop me from going insane .... now I can make it work it's driving me even more insane!!!

*** can I do? I have the same problem as u, I try to recover all the files but it failed, my pc send a message that the ipod didn´t have format, and this is still failing and failling, I tried to connect it to other computers but it´s the same problem.
you can see and hear everything but if you want to put more files or information you can´t ´cause the pc don´t recognise it.
I look for information in other forums and no one have the answere.
I dont know what to do, im desperate, i don´t mind a lot the info but i want to recuperate it, please help me!!

Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes GETTING FRUSTRATED

My ipod nano 3rd gen. is not being recognized by my computer. Everything worked fine, then plugged it in to my laptop one day and all I might get are 3 beeps, but nowhere in my computer is it shown that it is there. Ii have tried reinstalling itunes, the "5 R's", rebooting my computer, nothing is working. I am finding more and more posts of people having this trouble, and nowhere have I found that apple has actually offered a solution. Does any one have any ideas on how to fix this? It would really be nice to be able to sync and charge my ipod again.

Hey I have had my ipod since last december and around april it stopped working and responding to my computer. it does charge but now it can only hold a charge for a certain amount of time. Can sum one help me?

Hi,
My problems started when I wanted to install and use "NOOK" my OS of 4.3.3.1? was said to not be compatible with the addon!
I was trying to add it via wifi because my computers kept failing to recognize or connect to it, neither did itunes.
I then wanted to upgrade the os to 5, which is the most current, I think.
My computers and itunes failed to recognize the ipod touch.
I kept trying and finally tried a system restore. That did not work either. I tried other machines, that also did not work.
I then reinstalled the operating system on my main system and installed itunes then connected my ipod touch version 2 i think.
The computer and itunes still failed to recognize it.
I then tried to do a factory reset, this erased the ipod and set it to an itunes symbol with the connection plug and wire showing as an image.
Now it is still not recognized and I cannot get it to work normally.
Is there a way to get it functional again?

IPod not recognized by computer at all

Recently my brother made the wonderful decision to connect his ipod to my itunes so he could share all my songs. Now my computer doesn't recognize my ipod at all. I plug mine into the computer and nothing happens. When I plug his into the computer, it syncs all of the songs and charges and everything. I tried reinstalling the ipod software but nothing is working. My ipod is a 5th generation and his is a nano 3rd generation. How can I get the computer to recognize my ipod instead of his??

Also you might try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

IPod not recognized by computer

I connected my iPod nano to my computer and nothing comes up but the iPod is still charging anyways. I already tried restarting my computer and the Apple services and it still won't show anything. I also connected an iPod Touch to see if it was just my iPod but nothing came up either not even on iTunes. Help!

I know these boards are full of suggestions, but try this one. First, it requires that you have a docking station. Open up iTunes. Place the iPod in the docking station. Then, while keeping the iPod in the docking station, follow the instructions to 'reset' and then 'set to disk mode' the iPod. (on my 3rd gen., I think you hold <menu> and <play> buttons at the same time, wait for the big apple icon to appear). Before the apple disappears, I think to set it to disk mode you quickly press and hold the <skip backwards> and <skip forwards> buttons at the same time. Watch the iPod screen to see if it starts 'syncing' w/ your computer. If so, it should be showing up on your computer. Good luck.

IPod not recognized by computer - folder icon

Hi.
I have a 3rd generation iPod that displays the folder icon with the exclamation mark when I try to start it. If I hook it to my computer, the icon changes to the "OK to disconnect" message, and it indicates that it is in "Disk Mode". If I disconnect, the iPod freezes and, when resetting, the cycle starts over.
I would like to restore the iPod but, unfortunately, my computer never 'sees' it (neither in iTunes nor as a disk), so there is nothing I can do to bring it to a point where I can try to do something with it.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Ipod not recognized by computer or self

Ipod touch shows the apple screen but will not start, I did the hold power button then hold home button etc didnt work. the apple does stay on screen and flashes here and there but still no changes. Also, is not recognized on computer. Help??

sounds like a currupted iPod if its stuck like that or you Jailbreaked it.

Ipod shows it is charging - but ipod not recognized by computer

My ipod mini is dead when not connected to the USB cord; once my ipod is connected to the USB cord, it looks like the ipod should be charging, but both my computers (laptop & desktop) are not recognizing that the ipod is connected through the USB.
I went to the store last night for service and the ipod genius told me it was probably my USB cord, since when he hooked up my ipod to his computer through his USB cord - it connected and needed to be reformatted.
I went ahead and bought a new USB cord - but that didnt solve the problem. My computer is still not recognizing my ipod.
Could anyone be of any assistance?

Jersey, first off, it sounds like your battery must be almost dead (unable to retain a charge). If you are looking for quotes on having it replaced, I have found www.ipoddepot.ca to be very good and competitively priced.
As for the ipod not being recognized, it seems there is a lot of that being reported here, without any satisfactory solution so far. It seems like all are with Windows XP computers and I am beginning to wonder if it might relate to recent Windows security updates? In fact I think I will troll around the Microsoft site to see if I can confirm that theory.
As for taking it to a tech, I had exactly the same experience. The difference in result is due to the fact that he was plugging the thing into a Mac and not a Windows XP computer... Different software and environment, entirely!

IPOD not recognized my computer/updater/itunes

My IPOD was working fine until it froze. I went through the 5 Rs. It resulted in none of my music showing up on my IPOD (however the memory indicates that my music is still on the IPOS). ITUNES/Updater/My Computer do not recognize my IPOD. However my computer acknowledges the hardware when plugged in. Therefore I cannot restore it either. I have also tried it on a friends computer with the same IPOD and it does not work either. I have a 5G 30GB IPOD and have windows XP.

So, this seems to be a common problem. When I connect my iPod to my computer, the computer nor iTunes recognize the laptop. I've tried connectivity tests and it can't detect the iPod. However, the USB port does recognize other devices. I've tried the 5 R's Apple suggests. I've tried other methods from changing registry values to loading older version of iTunes to no avail. When I run the diagnostic tests, here's what I get:

However, it still charges when connected to the laptop and it charges when connected to the AC adapter. I've forced it into hard disk mode, and still nothing. I may take it to the Apple store this weekend, but any other ideas?

I have kind of the same problem with my 60gb ipod with colour display.
everything was working fine up until last sunday when i plugged into my laptop and I got the 'folder with exclamation mark' icon
i reset it and put it into disk mode but when i connect it to my laptop it doesnt turn up on itunes or windows. occasionally it will appear then disappear again so i can't restore it to factory settings.
i did manage to get it to appear in itunes and click on the restore button but i got the message that it couldnt be restored and there was a problem with the 'firmware' but before i could try anything else it disappeard from itunes again.
i have been told that the problem may be with my USB cable so i will buy another one at the weekend but if that doesnt work does anyone else have any ideas as i have tried nearly everything.
i personally think my ipod caught me looking at my friends new 80gb video ipod and got jealous!!!!!

i did 4 of the 5 R's because when i tried to restore my ipod the ipod updater 2006-03-23 wont even update because it thinks my ipod isnt plugged in. what can i do.

I have a very simular issue. I had my 5G iPod replaced by apple and i'm very scared it may happen again. I had the 5G for 2 weeks when iTunes would take a long time to recognize it. XP MCE 2205 will recognize it immediately, but iTunes does not start automatically nor does it recognize it if i start it. Then, i got that folder with exclamation icon, this is the reason they replaced it. I got the new one today, and connected it to my USB 2.0 port as i did before. Has been working fine. All of the sudden, iTunes is not recognizing it again. Restarted the computer and then iTunes decided to recognize it, and then iTunes locked up. I waited, then i got the "long write failed" error in windows. That scared me. I had to kill iTunes. Restarted my computer while removing the 5G from the USB. Once the computer was logged on, i connected the 5G to the onboard USB1.1 and... so far so good. The USB2.0 is a 4 port PCI card. ???? Does that have anything to do with my problems? Maybe not!

my iPod Video 30GB has worked fine on my PC since I got it, and everytime I plugged it into my PC, the iPod screen displayed the message "Do not disconnect the USB cable". Just some few days ago, the message was not displayed at all, and the iPod was not seen on iTuned or on My Computer. The iPod still gets recharged, but it does not show up, and does not display the "Do not disconnect USB cable". Ipod not detected by computer or itunes

Hi all,
I have two older ipod classics (from before they were called classic!), the are suddenly no longer findable on any of my computers. One is a 30gig, and easily 5 years old. The other is an 80 gig that is probably 4 years. Both play thru stereo and car radio with no problems, and can take a charge thru a USB cord. My 180 gig (about 2 years old), is still recognized by computers, as are an original! shuffle and and elderly 4 gig nano. The primary computer is an iMac, OS X 10.6.4 (reloading snow leopard, but thats another story), iTunes 10.4. However, I've also tried to connect these to a Macbook OS 10.6.7 and a Macbook Pro 10.6.7, both less than a year old, as well as a 4 year old macbook running 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.1.1. I've tried several usb cords, and no joy there. These computers all see the 180 gig, as well as the shuffle and nano, but not the other two. Any suggestions?

I think the trouble-shooting you describe has ruled out a bad USB docking cable, and a problem on the USB port. And since it previously worked with this computer, it's not some incompatibility with software or hardware. Even if there was a software (OS or iTunes) related problem, the shuffle should still charge when connected.
So, if it's not software, the docking cable, or the USB port, the cause is probably a problem on the shuffle (such as the logic board or battery). Since it is less than one-year from purchase date, you should have it checked under warranty. If you have an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar on the store's web page
