IPod question:

Hello,
I have a 3rd Generation iPod (Classic?). When I try to turn it on, only the Apple logo appears. You can also hear the hard drive fire up, but that is as far as it goes. I've tried to restart it, but that hasn't worked either.
When I plug in the iPod, my computer doesn't recognize it nor does iTunes.
So, please help. If you need any more info, feel free to ask.

Raven, to reset your iPod you press the Start and Menu button. To put the iPod in disc mode, you press forward and reverse while the logo appears. Take from here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651. The only problem is that I can't even get the iPod to reset (it doesn't stay "alive" long enough).
Thanks to the other guy that posted the link. However, the iPod doesn't stay on long enough for it to resort, nor be put into Disc Mode. Also, my computer cannot recognize the iPod (probably because it shuts off).
Like I said, when I press the Select button, the iPod's harddrive fires up, the Apple logo appears, and then it shuts off. When I plug it in, the same thing happens.
Hopefully this mystery can be solved soon, but thanks to those who are trying.

iCloud + Restoring my ipod question.
I just restored my ipod touch for the first time because it was unreadable in itunes, and I had manually backed up my ipod to iCloud prior.
The ipod is restored, but cloud not downloading any of my messages and pictures, and the other files that iCloud claims to back up?
How do I put these on my restored itouch?
    Thanks everyone

What messages? What app? The backup includes Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS),
What photos? How did the photos get on the iPod
The backup only includes photos in the iPod's camera roll album.

  • Issues with new Ipod, & questions Ive searched the forum for with no luck!

    Hi everyone!
Just got a brand new Ipod Touch 8G, used to have a used 16G but it finally broke. So since I bought this one brand new I actually decided to register it with Itunes under my email, unlike the last one which someone gave me and I could never get to let me sign in. I also JUST changed banks, and dont have the CC yet 4 the new one so I tried using Paypal as my registration payment type for Itunes, even went into Paypal and added ALL my new bank routing numbers, AND put a little cash into Paypal. At first this seemed to work fine with Itunes, it let me finish signing up and even let me start downloading a few free things, THEN I went into my separate paypal account window to remove an OLD prepaid Netspend card in case anyone charged the old card (trust me prepaid cc are a scam!) it wouldnt take my money from the bank thru paypal. AS SOON as i removed the card, Itunes stopped downloading my free stuff, and told me I had to verify payment information, took me to the main Itunes screen, where i again chose Paypal, only this time it took me right into Paypal to where u go to add a credit card and it told me I NEEDED to add a credit or debit card to paypal! WHY? It had worked fine, I have money on the account and a BANK ACCOUNT attatched!
*So i decided to just work on copying my music from my computer to the Ipod since I couldnt get Itunes working. This is where I have a few questions, have searched here cant really find the info so here goes...
first of all since I'm sure someone will ask what VERSION I have, WHERE the heck do you find this info? Cause all I know is its a brand new 8G Touch, it says nothing on the box about a version, when I access my General Settings on the Ipod, and go to About it says Version 4.0. So i guess thats my version even tho people on here have said there is nothing that high for the 8G?
**Second, i have been trying to find a better way to organize my music. I KNOW i can simply go to Music, Artist, pick the band then hit shuffle, BUT I am a big fan of playlists, I like my music to play in a certain way usually. But I have some artists that I have HOURS of music for, Im not sure i understand how I can change exactly what songs play by this artist, in a certain order for that time? I'm guessing I need to use my actual Itunes computer screen to do this? Right now I just have all my songs by an artist under a playlist with their name.. However, I am more than willing to sacrifice some of my longer playlists with just one artist in them if ANYONE thinks that it would help free up ANY more space? I have seen quotes from Apple and such that say the 8G should be able to hold around 1700 songs, of course i know this is a rough estimate, as some songs are longer, but I havent put THAT much on it, under my General/About tab it says 360 songs, and I removed ALL my pics from it cause i have a lot, and STILL I have already supposedly filled up 3.73GB, and this bring me to my next big issue-
**WHY does it claim to be 8G but my capacity now says its just 6.83!? I mean I havent added anything but music yet, and I planned on getting some of the free apps n such, but at this rate I wont have the space! I know 6.83 isnt far from 8, but still I feel cheated...does it have anything to do with the UPDATED version of the software that Apple convinced me to update RIGHT after I had JUST installed the Ipod? Cause it took forever then it said it was RESTORING my Ipod, and it told me on Itunes that it was restoring my music from backup! Why would it have erased all content during a basic upgrade without even telling me? Is there any way to uninstall that update and get back the memory it took up? And do these backup files take up space like on a normal computer? what about under settings where it says something about condense? I just think I must be doing something wrong cause 8G and 16G arent THAT vastly different, but the old touch I had had a WHOLE BUNCH more music on it PLUS 1000s of pics, PLUS some Apps, and wasnt nearly full, this one I added my fav artists and its nearly full?
Well, thanks a bunch for anyone who stuck with me there...I'm not tech stupid I promise lol, I'm a 26 yr old college student and have even worked tech support before, but i admit I'm not at all familiar with the Apple software, system or much beyond the basics...I just spent nearly 200 on this thing, and it IS a great toy, I just want to be able to fully use it!
Oh also, ive heard two things, that you DONT need a "sensor" seperate thing for the Nike app with the Touch, and that yes you DO...any idea? If i DO need to BUY something else I do not want it and can I remove it to free up space??
thanks a bunch eagerly awaiting any answers...might have to call Apple today about the Itunes payment registration thing...

    Welcome to the discussions,
WHY does it claim to be 8G but my capacity now says its just 6.83
The size of you HD is calculated binary when it comes to use it, instead of decimal when companies want to advertise there products. 1 KB=1024Byte instead of 1000KB as advertised by the manufacturer. In your case this reduces the actual available space by the factor of 0.93 or approx. 7,4GB.
If you have an "other" section in your color bar showing the different types of data on your ipod, which is bigger than 500MB, this could be a sign of corrupt data caused by a sync that did not complete or copied damaged data. A restore will reduce the size to normal again.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you restore your ipod, iTunes will install the newest firmware first and then add back your data and settings from your last backup if you choose to "restore from backup". Every backup is replaced by the following one, so make sure to include this folder in your backup routine in case you'll have to go back.
You can check the location and size of the backup folder for your ipod here:
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    copied from: About backups http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Sorry, I can't answer your payment question, I have never used your kind of setup, maybe you can find something useful here: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/

  • IPhone as an iPod questions

I have formed this as a complaint in this discussion previously but the moderators keep deleting it for some reason so perhaps if I phrase it in the form of a question.....
    Anyway, here is my question.
Does anyone have a good or technical explanation why with the iPhone, which is supposedly the "best iPod ever", one can't do these things?
Allow manual update rather than force you to sync?
    Allow TV Out option?
Allow you to use your iPhone as a flashdrive/hardrive as every other iPod does?

The only way that the prepay plan is available on the iPhone is if you fail their credit check.

  • AppleCare for iPod Question

Hi, last month my on/off button of my iPod touch just broke.
So I take it to Apple store and they gave me a new one.
The question is . . . If I buy an applecare for ipod, which serial number should I apply with?
The old one? or a new one?

    Thank you ! !
    Very quick reply.

  • Syncing/Updating iPod Question

I have about 990 tunes on my iTunes that are all added to my iPod. If I want to add say 5 songs to my iTunes and I click on "Update iPod" will it update all 995 tunes now or will it recognize that the only tunes not on my iPod on the 5 new songs I just added to my iTunes library?
Am I better off doing a manual update and manually adding the 5 tunes to my iPod?
The reason I ask is because recently I just had all my songs on the iPod and not in iTunes. When I did this whenever I added tunes to the iPod the songs would not show up alphabetically making it difficult to search for a specific song. Someone told me that you could correct this by managing your songs in iTunes and then updating your iPod. I just don't want it to update all 990 tunes every time I update my iPod. Just the new ones and any playlists that have changed.
    Thanks.

when you synch automatically only the changes get synched - that includes any changes to teh info in the Tag, playcounts, artwork added etc.
The basic answer in to your question is yet it will only add the 5 songs you added in iTunes.
BUT as you have found out if you delete songs from iTunes and are on auto synch they will delete from teh iPOd next time you synch

  • IPhone iPod Question

I have a question about the iPod in the iPhone 3G 8GB. Is it possible to manually add/remove music from your iPhoen as I do not have enough room and I do not want to delete additional content. I cannot figure out how you can delete or add specific songs or albumns, is there a way to do this?.
Also when listening to an albulm on my iPod it does not play through teh albumn, it just plays track 1 or the selected track over and over instead of playong through the albumn, is there a way to change this?.
    Any help appretiated
    Kind Regards

If you make a playlist in iTunes (a 'Smart Playlist' is a good option) of all of your music then you can be sure that all music on the playlist will be loaded and better than that, if you have several playlists containing the same music then each song is loaded only once, thus saving space (I discovered).... If you make a playlist that contains only a sub-set of the music in your Library then you won't be bothered by space wasted on things that you would never play anyway?
I was (once) tempted to loaded everything in my Library onto my iPhone when my Library was only a bit more than 12Gigs, but seeing how much my megalomania limited options for doing much more with my iPhone I learned very quickly!
Good luck and may you be able to find a combination that suits you....

  • MANY IPOD QUESTIONS CONCERNING REPLACING IT!!!

I realize that i have to send my mini ipod back to Apple to have it replaced becuase of problems that have occured with my battery not being able to stay charged.
And i also realize that it is my responsibility to backup my songs...do you suggest burning them from my laptop to a CD first?
I was also told that Apple would replace my ipod if i send it in to have the battery replaced. My ipod is personalized with my name on the back...will i still recieve another personalized ipod in return for the one i gave them?
And my last question..how do i make my computer "win" when i connect my new ipod (if replaced with my old one) to my library so my libray is not wiped out?

    Hi Beaner22,
I suggest burning the songs to CDs, yes. An external hard drive would work, as well.
Regarding the personalization, see the iPod Service FAQ. It states that any laser-engraving done by Apple will automatically be redone on the replacement unit.
The iPod will not have any data on it when you receive it, so it should take you through the set-up process (naming the iPod and setting it to automatically update or manually update) and not wipe out your library. However, if I am wrong on this, someone please correct me.
However, you can replace the battery yourself, or have a third party do it for you. These options can be much cheaper than Apple's method. • 5th Generation 80GB iPOD - Questions about functionality

All - I have a new 80GB video iPOD. The question I have is if I leave it just sit on my desk overnight and not plugged into my PC or power, I come in the next morning and go to use it and it seems as though it is shutdown. I press the button to turn it on, an Apple appears and it boots up. After that it appears to be fine, I am just curious if this is normal or not? Thanks in advance!

The iPod Nano and the Fifth Generation iPods have a feature called hibernation. Quote: "This allows the iPod to go into a power conservation mode after 14 hours of inactivity but resume operation in the same state as when it was last used. When the iPod wakes from hibernation, you will see the Apple logo displayed for a moment before the menu appears": iPod: About Sleep, Deep Sleep, Hibernation, and Sleep Timer

  • Basic iTunes/iPod Question

I feel stupid asking this question, but I have the old iPod Nano and I've got about triple the amount of music on my iTunes than my iPod has room for.
I spent the past 2 hours unchecking certain songs because making playlists were driving me crazy.
Then I realized you can't sync checked songs.
Is there a way to view only the checked ones so I can the copy them into my iPod selection playlist and try to sync it?
    Thanks.

Then I realized you can't sync checked songs.
Yes you can. In fcact, you can choose to sync ONLY checked songs.
To me, checking and unchecking items to sync to the iPod is tedious.
Using playlists is much easier to manage what goes onto your iPod.
Try creating playlist(s) and syncing only those playlists.
Select the iPod in iTunes. Click the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and Selected playlists.
Tick the playlists you want on the iPod.
Then just Add/Delete from those playlists and plug in the iPod.
The only time I uncheck things is for items I never or rarely want on the iPod such as old audiobooks and Christmas music.
Also, unchecked songs will not play continuously in iTunes. You have to specifically select a song and press play.

  • Some Ipod Questions

    Hello all!
I have an Ipod 5th Generation 80 GB, and now the ipod doesn't react to nothing neither to the power cord plug nor in the usb of the computer.
I even tried the reset thing and nothing.
The ONLY Thing that happens is that the Ipod flashes ocassionaly, and I don't know why, but I've already thought of being the battery dead.
So, I knew that the ipod is not in the warranty and I have some questions that maybe some of you might explain to me please.
    1. How much it will cost the replacement, because it's not in the warranty anymore
    2. If the whole Ipod is replaced what will happen to the files that I have in it? Will my privacy be preserved?
    So that it.
Thanks and I'm looking forward to your answers.
    Take Care.

so this is what i found about download codes : itunes/app store download codes

  • Syncing Apps to iPod Question!!

I recently bought an app for my iPod for the first time but when I try and sync it to my iPod from my computer it has a question that concerns me. It says that it would delete any exsisting apps on the iPod. Does that mean it will delete the ones that came with the iPod such as Safari, Calender, Youtube, and so on?
    Message was edited by: Chystery

    Welcome to the discussions,
the default apps ( Safari, Calendars, Contacts...) can not be deleted, only the apps you buy and install.
If there are apps on the ipod you do not have on your computer, choose "transfer purchases" in the File menu in iTunes to be sure, all other apps and bought media will be copied to your computer. If your ipod is synced for the first time or was synced to another computer before, all media content will be erased and replaced with the content of the new iTunes library on this computer.

  • Stupid Ipod Question

I'm not very good at explaining this, so hopefully it will be coherent. I have a 30GB ipod that randomly deleted all of the songs while I was in iTunes. However my ipod says that there is 7.2 GB stored on it. So my question is, am I so out of luck or is there a way to "find" the songs"?
Thanks in advance for any input or help.

  • Ipod- questions!: photography sharing and av out slideshow.

    g'day y'all.
sorry for the long post- but i would love some answers and i want to explain fully what i am doing....
sorry also for the multiple posts...
I am a professional photographer down here in australia.
I use Mac's exclusively and i love my 60 gig iPod photo.
I use it for showing clients my work when i visit them at their houses/offices.
I just plug in the ipod with the av cables into whatever TV they have around and do a slide show-
I have pre-loaded a bunch of different albums and a bunch of different playlists, mix and match them to the clients taste... and bam-
    they love it.
and i don't have to carry stacks of albums around etc.
    I love it.
I now have a new concept i want to market to my new wedding clients.
I am really excited about it.
--get all your wedding pictures {about 300 to 400 of them} on your own new iPod!--
so that leads to a few questions:
a} would the new iPod nano - 4 gig - be big enough?
    - is the iPod nano able to do a AV slideshow out to a TV?
    b} would i be considered an apple reseller? {if so what's involved in that??}
c} how would i go loading the pics and some cleared music onto a new iPod from my computer and then giving that to another person-
how would they go if they hooked it up to their computer?
d} is this fantastic idea doable?
and what do i have to do for it??
    thanks everyone.

    Here goes :-
a} would the new iPod nano - 4 gig - be big enough?
It should be big enough if you are just going to use it for photos and some background music. Although you may want to include the 'originals' of the photos so the client can access them on a computer. That will of course take more room especially if you have a high megapixel camera.
    - is the iPod nano able to do a AV slideshow out to a TV?
No it is not and that might be the thing that spoils your whole idea, unless you are OK using the 20GB iPod with colour screen which does output to a TV just like your 60GB.
    b} would i be considered an apple reseller? {if so what's involved in that??}
I would not think so and in effect the new owners would have to come back to you for warranty claims and then you would need to process the claim as your own.
c} how would i go loading the pics and some cleared music onto a new iPod from my computer and then giving that to another person-
how would they go if they hooked it up to their computer?
Well you own the copyright to the photos so there is no problem with that. the music is another issue, if it is copyright material then you would be breaking the law as you would be in effect selling copies. If you use non copyright music made for these types of things the you should be OK. For the client to access the photos on a computer you need to make sure you select the 'Include originals' option in iTunes > iPod preferences, so that the actual photo files are copied on to the iPod in a folder.
d} is this fantastic idea doable?
    Yes it's id doable.
and what do i have to do for it??
Buy iPods, fill with photos and music taking into account the above.

  • G4 mdd & firewire for ipod question

    Hello all:
I posted this in the ipod forum, but figured I should post here too.
I will be buying an ipod classic 160gb in the near future. Currently I'm uploading my entire cd collection to a new external firewire 500gb drive I just bought in preparation.
My system is a G4 powermac which I love, but which only supports usb 1.1. Thinking ahead to when I sync this massive library to my new ipod, I'm going to wish it was at faster speeds than usb 1.1. From what I can tell, people have had spotty luck trying to use usb 2 pci add on boards in these systems........so I'll ask this.......do the NEWEST generation of ipod classics, the 80/160 have the ability to be sync'd via a firewire connection? Seem to recall that in the old days mac sold the ipod with both usb & firewire cables. Guess they don't anymore, but still my question is (a) can the newest ipod classics be sync'd via firewire and then (b) does anyone sell the cable???
    Thanks!
    TM

do the NEWEST generation of ipod classics, the 80/160 have the ability to be sync'd via a firewire connection?
No. While there still is a FW iPod cable on the Apple Store, it implicitly states that it's for the older iPods that supported FW sync. It will charge a new iPod, but it won't sync it.
Your best bet is to find a PCI USB 2.0 card. You've obviously seen the messages here about sleep issues with USB cards, and recommendations for cards that seem to cause the least number of problems. Try to find one of those.
