IPod Restore failed, now Kernel Panic when connect to Mac

My iPod is a little older and has had trouble updating though the iPod Updaters so in order to get the latest updater on my iPod I've had to just restor the iPod using that specific updater. iPod Updater froze during my last restore and now I have incomplete software on my iPod and connecting it to my Mac results in immediate kernel panic. How can I get my iPod back to a usable state?
Thanks.

Just got back from trying this idea and IT WORKS. For people that might have this problem, I booted from the CD/DVD and lauched Disk Utility and did a Repair Disk. I did it twice actually for good measure. Afterwards I booted back to the System Folder on the HD and I performed a restore of my iPod using the iPod Updater 2005-06-26.app updater. I've read that my whatever generation iPod works best with that one (I have the click wheel with the 4 buttons above it).
Thanks for all your help.

They use the latest OES version with all the latest sp and patches applied. They have even tested with the an OES 11 beta with the same result. The OS run as a VM on VMware in 64 bit mode attached to a SAN. Has also been tested as a plain install without VMware. The Lion version is 10.7.2.
This is how the problem occurs:
    1. Mount the CIFS share - no problems
    2. Use the share - no problems
    3. If the network connection drops you get a message that the CIFS volume has disappeared and you are asked to unmount it. When you do that you get a kernel panic. You can force the problem to happen by turning of WiFi.
So it is OES2 but which version (SP1, SP2, or SP3)? Interesting as I'd only heard of this with NetWare 6.5.
Do you (and anyone else experiencing this issue in this thread) know if this has recently started happening, perhaps after the latest November 2011 Scheduled Maintenance patches were installed?
I'll hopefully be able to do some testing tomorrow but in the meantime I've asked Novell ...

  • MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.

  • IPod Won't Power Up, Even When Connected to Mac

I'm trying to figure out if there's any chance this could just be the battery, or a more catastrophic failure (harddrive, etc.). The iPod will not power up, even when connected to the Mac, and will not mount as a removable drive either.
I've been having trouble with the battery for some time now (it will only hold a charge for about an hour, two tops) but I would think that even if the battery failed outright it would still work when plugged in (either to the wall, or to the Mac).
Does anyone know for certain if that is the case? I'd hate to waste any money sending this off to ipodresq.com for a battery if it's something more serious. (And this one is so old, if it is a harddrive failure or anything like that I'd be better served to buy a new one.
    G4 933 (Quicksilver)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for those links; I performed a hard reset and that seems to have brought the iPod back to life, at least for now. I suspect that the battery is no longer holding any significant charge and needs to be replaced, which might be why it locked up in the first place.
So now I get to decide if this 1st gen iPod is worth the money to replace the battery, or if I should just finally buy a new one. (I definitely do not want one of those rumored touchscreen models, though, if they turn out to be reality... impossible to navigate by touch alone while driving, and I have no use for video on an iPod - I want to watch video BIGGER, not smaller!)
    Thanks again!

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use

  • NetInstalls/Restores Failing - Constant Kernel Panics

    Hello all -
Before I begin, I admit to being a little over my skis and a bit of a rube when it comes to this stuff - I know just enough to royally screw stuff up.  I've tried to do my due diligence in searching on the topic but haven't come up with anything that seems to work.
I'm trying to create images that I can deploy in a school setting with mavericks server.  Specifically, trying to install simple images of 10.9.5 on some of our iMacs - yes I have the installer from the app store on the machine used to make the images.  Making the images doesn't seem to be the problem.  I can make them, get them into my netbootspo folder and all machines see them in the startup disk.
The problem occurs when trying to install the image.  I generally get a continuous kernel panic.  Usually immediately, sometimes a few minutes in.  On occasion the install just "freezes."
Images are set to install via NFS.
I'm working on machines plugged in via ethernet
I've tried looking a the logs on a client - i don't really know what to look for though.  I do see:
    something about missing core services
[375:303] layoutstill needs update after calling -[NSSscrollViewLayout]
In the server log I only see:
    BSDP offer sent
    and
    BSDP DISCOVER
The clients I'm working with are older (pre 2011 machines).  There are students using the newer models and I don't want to affect any work/projects they're doing.
I can update machines via a bootable installer on a flash drive and bring them back to life - I'm just trying to make it a bit easier on myself (whats that about best-laid plans?) and utilize server to do it.
Thanks for looking, and thanks for your patience with me.

I've tried making new images a few times with no change in behavior on the client side...even made them from different machines to be sure with freshly downloaded installers.
Yes, this is a super basic net install with zero extra steps added by design.  From the get go i wanted to simply get my feet wet with the process before I tried any fancy stuff.
    On:
#1 - I'm able to run the same OS installer from a bootable flash drive and all is well.  This was actually the motivation to start this project, so I didn't have to run around chasing flash drives (eventually) around my district.
#2 - has been a suspicion of mine, pinpointed what and where though....I'll try HTTP, along with..
#3 - Verbose mode.  Thanks for that tip.  I'll report back.
Again, thank you for your time.

is there anybody to help me connecting my philips picopix 2055 pocket projector

on the philips- website I found a driver suitible to a mac  (picopix viewer 2).
using it (and the picopix) each attempt causes a kernel panic.

  • Airport Failing? Kernel Panic when running wireless

So, a couple of weeks ago my PowerBook abruptly just froze and I got the equivalent of the blue screen of death. Horrified, I just sat there in shock for a moment, and then restarted the machine.
Since then, I've started to think my house was conspiring against my beloved PowerBook because I would only get these freezes at home. Then it hit me. The only difference between home and work is that I use wireless at home!
I've searched the forums for answers. I checked the RAM with Rember and it passed with flying colors. Everything else seems normal and runs without issue.
So just a few minutes ago, it struck again. Below are the contents of the latest PanicReporter log file. It's all greek to me. Can anyone decipher?

  • Kernel Panic when i attempt to load music/videos

when i try to load any mp3s or movie files onto my ipod, i get the kernel panic screen (4 languages, hold down power blah blah blah)... what can i do to make this not happen?

I am in the same boat as you guys.
I have a 60 gig Black 5G iPod. Loaded primarily with video.
It is syncing to a 10.4.3 iMac G5.
I have been using the iPod trouble free for 2 weeks now. Syncing everyday, removing and adding video. No problems.
Last night I attempted to add a number of videos that would have filled up the device. Once I was syncing the last, or second to last, video and the counter in iTunes showed there was about a gig of space left available on the iPod I would get a Kernel Panic (grey screen, power button, 5 languages, telling me to restart).
This happened twice before I removed a handful of videos to keep the iPod from filling up. This seemed to relieve the problem and the iPod synced like normal.
Otherwise the iPod has been performing as expected, video playback is great, syncing otherwise is fine.

So, a follow up question, anyone reading this thread completely (and I mean completely, save for a few megs) maxed out their 5th gen iPod? 30 or 60 gig qualifies as it seems to occur on both models.
Basically I am trying to determine the root of the problem. Is this a serious hardware problem which would warrant an exchange?
Or possible a problem/flaw in the database structure of the iPod that could be rectified via a firmware update?
Has anyone talked with Apple Tech Support about this issue?
My iPod is absolutely great otherwise, none of the many complaints others in the forum have had, and so if this is just a case of leaving a gig or so free on the iPod until a fix materializes so be it! I would rather avoid an unnecessary exchange if possible.
I just want to avoid major hardware issues downs the line naturally.
Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

  • Kernel panic when waking from sleep

My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
    - Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
    - No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
    - Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
    - After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
    - Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
    - no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
    Please help.
    Thomas

Nominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Kernel panic when using Internet Sharing with a dialup connection
If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.
To avoid this issue in the future, deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Network.
    3. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
    4. Click the PPP Options button.
    5. Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Apply Now.
    8. Quit System Preferences.
