IPod Shuffle Error (-48) : Windows Vista

Hoping someone can help with my predicament here:
I have Windows Vista Ultimate and the most recent version of iTunes. I bought the shuffle new about 2-3 months ago. When I connect my shuffle it always gives me the error in the screenshot below and prompts me to format the device as well. It will also do this each time a song changes if I am listening to the songs on the iPod through iTunes. When transferring songs to the iPod it prompts me with these pop-ups for each song that is loaded.
I have tried to search for that error code and have not had any luck. Has anyone run into this issue before.
All software is up-to-date: Windows/iTunes/Shuffle Firmware
Thanks for any feedback!
Here is a screenshot of the errors:

Hi, I would suggest you to try Temporarily changing the Time Zone setting and then Open the latest version of iTunes and Restore your iPod. After successfully restoring your iPod, change the Time Zone back to your normal setting.
Hope this works.

  • ITunes has stopped Working when using Ipod shuffle 3gen on Windows Vista HB

Itunes keeps shutting down when I insert my Ipod shuffle into the usb connection of my latop. I am using a Windows Vista Home Basic for an OS.
Not sure if this is a Vista, Apple issue, or something else...
I have contacted apple about this and uninstaled/reinstalled Itunes. Yet after all this, I get the same error message. The message reads:
"iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
As far as I know Vista should be compatible with iTunes and it is until I actually try to use my shuffle (newest model). Its weird because my shuffle works fine on a second computer that has Windows XP for an OS...
Does anyone have a solution to this??
    Thanks in advance!

i have the same issue... but i found a workaround.. i tried 3 diff OS's . didnt change the problem. To Add apps or music to ur Ipod... simply DISCONNECT the Ipod from the PC then add files/folders to library. Then connect the ipod back to PC and sync. it has no problem adding the files that way (at least in my case) I hope this helps... Good Luck =)

  • Is ipod shuffle compatible with windows xp (sp2)?

Please tell me, is ipod shuffle compatible to windows xp service pack 2???????

If it's a 4G Shuffle, then no.  You need at least SP3 installed in order for it to work properly. See this page for the minimum requirements.
    http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/specs.html
Same thing goes for a 3G Shuffle as well.

That means only a 1G or 2G Shuffle will work with your system.

  • Can not upload from itunes10 Windows to ipod shuffle - error 50

I have an ipod shuffle 4th generation and am using itunes10 running on a PC Windows XP SP3.
When synchronising the device from itunes, I always get the message <itunes is unable to copy "song" to ipod "name" because of an unknown error (-50). Irrespective of doing this with a complete library or synchronising just 1 song, always same error. I have now deleted all content from the ipod shuffle, and tried it again. Same error.
I know an ipod reset tool is available on the site, but it is currently not accessible. Anyway, resetting the device everytime when the library does not synchronise is definitely not the right solution.

My only suggestion is to take a look at this Apple support document.

  • Trouble restoring my iPod Shuffle (error 1418)

So this is my specification of my iPod:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/ipod/iPod_shuffle.html
I have a machine of Windows Vista and it is a notebook.
My iPod worked absolutely well with my machine and my iTunes for some days.
About a month ago, there was a prompt talking about I need a Windows Update patch installed as removing iPod from a Vista machine eventually hurts the iPod.
I checked every detail with Microsoft.com, Apple.com as well as Google.com and decided to patch my OS with the given link.
However the installer said the update did not apply to my system.
"Ok, then, let's forget it", I thought and just forget about it.
Just for a few song syncs, I found that there is always some error for the iPod and I have to restore it to get it sync.
As well as there is some way to update my songs, I don't mind to do extra steps.
Then, yesterday, I tried the same thing.
Sync it, ok, can't, then, restore.
However, it comes out an error 1418.
    Retry, the same.
Retry again and again, the same again and again.
Then, I started with Googling. And eventually tried to disconnect it and reconnect it when restoring, which is suggested by this site:
    http://www.javatyger.com/2007/02/solution-to-ipods-evil-1418-error.html
    Then, to Apple support.......
I tried the iPod Shuffle Restore Tool, sorry, not for Vista.
Then, I tried to use an old version of iPod updater to restore it, can't.
Now, I have the following symptoms:
    1. iTunes, Windows explorer, actually everything in my machines can recognize the iPod.
    2. iTunes cannot sync. the content.
    3. iTunes cannot restore the iPod and gives error 1418 when trying to do so.
    4. Windows explorer shows iPod in My Computer, clicking its property, it shows no memory space used nor free.
    5. Cannot format the iPod as treating it like an external storage device. Using right-click->format gives no response while using "format I:" in cmd.exe gives "Error in IOCTL Call".
    6. No trace of the iPod having any memory judging from its property and Disk Management.
I hope these information could help figuring out the solution and I will be very thankful with anyone's help.

I have had the same problem with 2 different ipods. I eventually was able to reset one (using the restore utility and Windows XP. When I got back to the main setup screen asking me to name my ipod, i left the autofill box checked. Then when itunes loaded i clicked autofill. Now I have ALL my songs on one ipod but cannot take any songs off it or change playlists.
If you haven't already, try this link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508 and go thru all the instructions on your XP machine, and see if you get to the same point I am at now. If you do, welcome to a whole new world of frustration!!! then maybe we can figure out what to do from there.
    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?, Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?

My Ipod 160GB when disconnected is showing without any files, but no room available. It appears in my 'Computer' screen as 'Removable Disk (though the icon is a little iPod). It does not show up in iTunes at all (I have the latest version).
When I right-click the icon on the 'Computer' screen it does run incredibly slowly. I was doing this to consider if I should try formatting it (only NTSF and exFAT formats were showing) but I wasn't certain if that would be a good idea.
    I have thus far:
    Hard Reset iPod
Verified the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver was installed correctly via Device Manager
Checked the device in 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management - showing as a RAW file with only format option as exFAT or NTSF
Ran iPod in Diagnostic Boot Mode - IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* - stats revealed 'Error' (did this twice to confirm error). Reset iPod from here.
After this it actually came up in iTunes but said it needed to be restored - ran Restore iPod. Error message said 'iPod cannot be restored. Uknown error occoured (1415).
Tried Solution 1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539) - Reregistering the .dll files. Was unable to complete step 11 as the iPod did not appear in iTunes.
Verified that Apple Mobile Device Manager was installed.
Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service.
Checked for third party conflicts - couldn't find any.
Changed the drive letter and restarted the computer.
Put into disk mode - unsure what that achieves.
Downloaded the HP USB with no luck running the program. I believe that Windows Vista doesn't allow formatting drives to FAT32 at all, and even previous editions of Windows wouldn't allow formatting above 32GB so certainly no suitable for me. If I got hold of a mac computer - could I format on that? Or is there a FAT32 Formatter that works for 160GB?
So I am at a bit of a frustrated loss. If you have any suggestions or know what I should do - I am all ears or eyes as it were. I will be on standby to give you more information if required.
    Thanks,
    Ashley

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Also see these (if you haven't found them already):
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

  • Cannot connect ipod shuffle 2nd gen to Vista

Hi, can't seem to find an answer to this situation on this forum, plugging in ipod causes Vista to start searching for drivers that it does not find, iTunes 7.4 popped one window suggesting the device be reset, but window disappeared never to return.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

Hi, I have new PC with Windows Vista, my ipod classic works OK on this PC, iTunes locates it and can transfer music successfully, however I also have 2 ipod Shuffle's which Vista recognises and asks me to install drivers from the CD that came with the ipods, but the shuffle does not have any drivers. iTunes does not detect these shuffle's either, so I cannot use them via this PC, however they do work on another Windows XP PC I have, so there is nothing wrong with the Shuffle's.
I have the latest iTunes installed - version 7.4.3.1, but it still does not detect these Shuffle's.
It is Windows Vista that appears to be the problem, but only with this one version of the iPod.
Any help would be really useful as I have all my tunes on my Vista PC and did not want to have to make copies on my old windows XP PC.
    Thanks, Fred

  • Disk errors in Windows Vista

I have new Fujitsu Notebook running Windows Vista home premium. Everytime I plug in my iPod to sync it, I get an error window saying that I need to scan my drive for errors. It does not restrict access to my iPod in iTunes but it does slow the sync process. I am running version 7.3.2.6 of iTunes and version 1.2.1 on my 5th gen with video. I usually tell the computer to ignore the error and have no problems. I have run the scan on the iPod with negative results(still get error and no errors were found.). I also checked and my copy of Windows Vista is current and updated. Is there a patch for this problem or do I just have a mutant laptop??

  • IPod Shuffle and new windows 8

    Hello!
A week ago my old computer crashed and died. Just got a new one yesterday.
    HP 110-290 Desktop Pc...Windows 8 (had Vista)
Had to install my IPod shuffle on the new computer. Was nervous that I would
not get my stuff back. However, I can see all my music. When I go to play it
a message says I must "authorize my computer first".  I'm not sure what that
means...didn't see anything like that on my  old computer.  And was wondering
if my Shuffle was compatible with Windows 8?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help (I'm not the best at computers).
    Thanks again!
    Heinzilla

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • IPod Shuffle Error 1418: discovering more, let's try new ways

I tried to fix my iPod without success, reading every single message of this board or in googgle... and I found a interesting thing: the iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a DAMAGED pen drive or memory stick. Let's not focus on iTunes7, iTunes6, restore it, update it, etc.. it won't work. Let's focus instead on HOW to force Windows to recognize that there is a 1GB disk inside the pen drive we are attaching. The goal then is to format it via an utility like "HP Format tool" or via "Command": afterwards I think it would be a game to restore it in iTunes. We can try also with utilities for pen drives data recovery, I don't know
And about the cause of the problem, I found it could be that the iPod Shuffle can fail when removed without clicking on "Secure Hardware Remove" in windows
Ok, I tried to pull out some ideas, only alltogether we can have success. Apple abandoned us, let's face this situation and let's try to recover this iPod Shuffle, cause I can't accept I have to trow it and buy a new player.
    Thanks and good luck

OK guys, after one week without sleeping, searching every corner of the web and every corner of dedicate forum (this site,iPodLounge,etc...), I have to give up. These are my final conclusions (I am an electronic engineering student here in Italy, I love music, I talked to a lot of collegues and friends, I asked for others opinions: I can't say I'm an expert, but I know where I'm putting my hands)
    1) I tried the iPod Shuffle in Windows XP, MAC OS X & Linux. The computer can recognize that an iPod Shuffle is attached, but it's impossible to read what's inside (I/O error). That means it's impossible to see the CAPACITY of the disk, it's impossible to FORMAT it (failure of commands like fdisk, chkdisk, format, mount, etc...) or to use disk utilities programs like HP Format Tool, Disk Utility in the Mac, Windows USB, etc... With Linux we have the information that the operating system can't read the iPod Shuffle first memory block. And in Windows in fact we have the message "insert a disk"
    2) For this reason it's impossible to fully restore the iPod with Apple utilities, just because we can't write on the flash memory of the iPod. This explains the 1418 error in iTunes 7 and the errors on the previous versions of iPod Updater. As I said before, iTunes recognize that the iPod is attached because it recognizes the hardware (as we can see in the Control Panel), but it doesn't recognize its flash memory and says it's corrupted (as we "cannot see" in the Disk Manager)
    3) The iPod Shuffle has the same behaviour of a traditional USB pen drive with a damaged flash memory
    4) I can assume that iTunes 7 has stressed the iPod Shuffle "burning some sectors" of the memory, it's just not a coincidence. Other reasons may be plugging out the device without clicking on "Remove securely hardware" on Windows taskbar, after the installation of iTunes 7. Anyway we must remember that iTunes7 incorporated the old iPod Updater, a new "iPod data usage" system, and a new volume limiter... Find your own conclusion..
    5) For newbies, remember that the iPod Firmware is ON the flash memory (that's why in 1GB models you saw only 990 MB free). If we can't restore the firmware, it means we can't restore the flash memory.
So, if your warranty has expired, I suggest 2 conclusions:
    1) Open your iPod and try to replace the flash memory with a new one.
    2) Take your iPod with you, go to the nearest Apple Center, and stick it in the right place you can find there....
Good luck to all of you and thanks for your attention!
PS: 2 years ago I bought an iPod shuffle in Singapore, only to found in Italy that the button was spoiled. The replacement served me till last week, when I had the idea to install iTunes 7.
But 4 years ago I bought a 20 GB Creative Nomad Jukebox 3. He's still here doing his job, and smiling to me when I need him. I used him even to djing in smoky and wet parties... and Creative is a Singapore brand...

  • TS1372 can't restore ipod shuffle error 1442

how xan i restart my ipod shuffle with unknown error occured 1442?

I FOUND OUT HOW TO FIX IT:
    1) You need to make sure you back up your library so you can maintain your ID3 tags, ratings, and library settings. So follow the instructions located at: http://www.kadavy.net/blog/archive/2005/08/transferyouri.php
    2) Uninstall iTunes completely
    - After uninstalling, make sure that the following directories are erased:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer
    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
    - this will ensure that all the previously installed versions of iPod firmware updates are erased.
    3) One other thing that I did, which I don't know if it helped. Was cleared my registry from previous iTunes installations, by
    a. clicking start....run
    b. typing 'regedit'
    c. searching for strings that had "iTunes" in them and removing the ones under the folder "SOFTWARE" and NOT ANY OTHERS.
~be advised that the registry is very crucial to Windows interface and I am not liable for any damage done due to ignorance or neglect during this step
    4) Empty Recycling Bin to get rid of everything
    5) Re-install the latest versions of iTunes available at www.apple.com
    6) Click File-->Import and then selecting your exported Library File (XML)
this will re-import all your settings and album ratings and ID3 tags
    7) THEN VAIOLA! This fixed my error -48

  • Ipod shuffle error light. cannot play.

    hi
i have had my ipod shuffle about a week, it was working great for the first day. then it all went wrong. i charged it all night, went to play it in the morning and the error message was flashing. the ipod will not do anything, everytime i push a button the error message comes on. i connected it to my computer again, this time all the songs were missing.
    can someone please help?
    thanks

Ok this help with my problem here it is...The yellow orange lights problem, or no play at all. It appears to be a problem with the software not the ipod!! I use the software real player which supports ipods I went to "my computer" and found the ipod (usually "my name ipod" I the open the drive, yes your ipod is recognize under windows as a drive. I backed up the songs in to a folder (my song) and deleted all folders in the ipod. Note: the folders in the ipod are hidden you have to go to "tools" then "folder options" then "view" and make sure you select "view hidden files and foldes" you will then see all folders, delete them all!
Open your real player software, do not syncronize just open the folder where you saved all your songs copy them and paste them under burn/transfer. I had my son's ipod working in a flash! I suggest not using itunes software until Apple fixes this problem, I think once you delete the itune files in your ipod you can use any software to add songs in to your ipod, good luck!
