IPod stops syncing about 20/50gbs in, and makes unhealthy sounds.

Well, here's the story. I'm sorry in advance that it's such a huge post.
I haven't used my iPod classic for about 8 or so months now, and it's just been chillin in my drawer, turned off. Yesterday, I decided to plug it in to update it with all of the new music it's missed over the past 8 months. Once I plugged it in it froze for a bit, and iTunes said something was wrong with it, so it needed to be restored. Now, you should know, I've had this iPod since December 31, 2007. I have kept it in pristine condition, no scratches, marks, it basically looks brand new, and I've never dropped it.
So on to my actual issue: Once I started syncing the music, it basically got to approximately the 2500th track, and stopped syncing. When I would plug it in to sync the rest, iTunes would freeze, and I couldn't do anything until I just unplugged the iPod. Once I unplug the iPod, iTunes tells me that I don't have enough priviledges to access the disk, or something along those lines. Well, the issue was worse before, because before during this started my iPod just wouldn't respond and my system would hang and iTunes wouldn't force quit even though it said it did.
Now I restored it under Windows, and put it in manual mode, went to my Mac and same thing happens except this time..... all of my music that got on the iPod is now displayed as OTHER and it doesn't show up on the iPod. I think, maybe thats just a OS issue, since its restored under windows now. I restore it under OS X again. But this time it's more manageable because it doesn't try syncing automatically. Every time I have tried to sync it for the second time, it stops at the 13th-16th song and then I hear an unhealthy mechanism sound coming from the iPod. I've checked if it was a faulty wire, since I have 2, and both have the same problem. Also, when I plug it out after it pulls some of these shenanigans, it shows the OK to disconnect screen, and once the bar reaches the end the iPod resets itself, and makes some more strange sounds in the process.
Well, that's my story. I'm freaking out because I leave for Germany tomorrow, and now I won't even get to listen to my iPod on the plane.
Is there anything I can do? Are there any diagnostic tools I can use to tell if my iPod is dying or not? Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Obviously, my iPod isn't under warranty with Apple anymore, but I have a repair plan with RadioShack. It takes like 3 weeks though, so that's really out of the question in terms of action I can take right now.

Try to put your ipod into disk mode and run disk utiliy to see if there are any corrupt files on the HD.

Reformating it and restoring it again would be another option.

Looking at the date, you might be on your plane already, good luck anyway

  • IPod stops syncing after a while, won't eject and then crashes iTunes

Whenever I try to update my iPod Classic 80GB, after 1000 songs or so the iPod stops syncing (gets stuck on a song). Then the iPod won't eject, even when dragged into trash.
Then, when trying to eject iPod or quit iTunes, iTunes crashes and has to be force quitted with iPod cable removed.
When I check my iPod it says there is no music/photos etc on it.
I have reinstalled the latest iTunes and restored my iPod with the latest version, my OS software is all up to date too.

Actually at 1200ish songs the iPod hard drive starts making some severe clicking/clanking noises. I'm guessing it means the hard drive is screwed since it's the same symptoms as my last iPod
Why does this happen? Both my iPods were about 2 years old when the hdd's started clicking, surely hdd's last for more than two years?

  • Ipod stops syncing after about 11gb on data transferred

ok, my ipod stops syncing after i transfer about 11gb of data.
my music collection alone is 12gb, i also have alot of photos and videos and other contents.
it doesnt matter which format the ipod is in, mac formatted or windows formatted its the same result.
    its an 80Gb ipod classic.
any one have any clue as to why this is happening?

  • HT1349 My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?

My Ipod mini syncs, but when I go to play, no sound.  I've tried multiple speakers and headphones. No Go.  What next?
My latest problem is that the Apple site will not recognize my equipment by it's serial number.  I know the mini is old, but I like what it did for me and don't necessarily want to "upgrade".

This is the iPad in the Enterprise forum. You'll be more likely to get help with your issue if you ask in the appropriate iPod forum.

My iphone 5 stopped syncing to outlook email, calender and contacts after the IT department switched from a HP exchange server to MS2010 exchange server.  Help?

Try deleting your exchange account on your iPhone, then adding it again fresh.  I had the same problem when we upgraded servers and this fix worked for me.

  • IPod stops syncing in middle of file transfer

    Hello all,
I'm having some problems with my 5th generation iPod when syncing to my notebook (running OS X Snow Leopard).
I have it set to manual sync, and when I move my music files to my iPod to begin syncing, it will sync up to approximately 5 or so songs (sometimes it will reach up to 10), then syncing will stop. After syncing stops, the iPod appears to unmount from both iTunes and the desktop and I get an error message saying that the disk cannot be found, then another error message that says the standard "eject before removing device".
I'd also like to note that during the syncing, I hear the hard disk working normally up until the time the 5 song mark, and it's as if the disk just completely shuts down. I've restored the iPod through iTunes and tried repairing the disk with Disk Utility, but Disk Utility says that the drive appears fine.
Could this be a hard drive issue? Any thoughts or suggestions? Oh, and I thought it was the USB connector cable, but that's working fine with syncs to my iPod nano and iPhone. Any help or insight would be very much appreciated.

Over the past couple of days I realized that I had ESET's Cybersecurity installed and running on my Mac. I turned it off and tried syncing again. There was no change in behavior.
I then discovered Apple has made available an update to iTunes to accommodate the impending release of iOS 4.3 for iPad etc. There were no other "fixes" listed in the description of the update. Nevertheless I updated iTunes. After the update I tried syncing and it failed again the same way as described above. I then tried to sync again and it worked!!
Other than CyberSecurity not running the update iTunes was the only difference between failure and success of the sync.
I don't post this as an answer to the question, but rather simply as further information to those interested.

  • Ipod stops syncing halfway

Hi, I have a problem with my video ipod when syncing. Everything works just fine with my ipod (30 gb) up until a point when i start syncing. When i start syncing, it starts syncing normally then it stops half way through and there's nothing there, and then the bar suddenly disappears and a message saying 'ok too disconnect' appears. Furhter checking on my ipod revealed that nothing was added to my ipod and the problem just repeats itself over and over again when i try to sync.
I've tried restoring it and I get the same problem
    Any ideas???

-Try resetting the iPod and try again.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next I would try restoring from backup
It is expected that when you connect an iPod that was synced to another computer/iTunes ibray, the iPod will be erased and its contents replaced with that in the iTunes library of the new computer. An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library.

  • IPod stopped sync. just sync when you plug another USB device, e.g pendrive

As weird as it may seem all my iPods (i have 2 old Nanos, 2 new Nanos, one Shuffle and one Touch)stopped syncing. iTunes recognizes them without a problem. I can configure them to sync to a particular playlist but nothing really happens.
After a lot a work (plugged them in another PC to have 'em erased and all; reinstalled iTunes 9, etc) I just found out the strangest behavior: if I click Sync it takes a long time and nothing really happens. If I do it again anfd plug another USB device (like a pendrive) then sync goes smoothly.
Not sure why.. all I know is that I love the hardware but hate the software.
Maybe if I reinstall my PC the issue will go away...
    Any ideas???

It's probably not a problem with the shuffle.  Your computer's USB bus may not be providing enough power for all of your connected USB devices.  A typical USB mouse and keyboard are low-power devices, so you must have other devices connected...?  An iPod, because it charges battery from the USB port, is a high-power device.
I use a powered USB hub.  The hub has its own power supply.  I have the hub connected to the computer, and most of my devices, like iPods, iPhone, flash drives, etc. connect to the hub.  I use the USB ports on the computer for things I leave connected more or less permanently, such as printer and external drive.
Since the hub has its own power supply, devices connected to it do not draw power from the computer's USB bus.  So that is important.  Some cheaper USB hubs are not self-powered; they are powered by the computer's USB port.  I use an older version of this one

but there are many options.  Just get one that has its own power supply.

  • HT204053 My contacts and calenders stopped syncing on my I pad and iPhone any ideas?

My contacts and calenders stopped syncing between my iPad and my iPhone. It worked for a couple of moths when I first set it up.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Contacts not syncing.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.
    Calendars not syncing.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • My Mac's iCal has stopped syncing with my iPhone, Macbook and iPad?

My Mac has stopped syncing with my iPhone and MacBook Pro.  System preferences setting for iCloud has iCal selected in all devices.  Interestingly, my iPad is showing all chat messages between me and other people when I am using my iPhone.  This started about the time that iCal started misbehaving.  May or may not be related.

  • Can you sync a previously purchased song and make it a ringtone?

There are many songs I purchased that can now be used as a ringtone. Can somoeone tell me whether I can use these songs and, if so, how do I sync them to my iPhone and edit them for a ringtone? I tried to click and drag a song into the "Ringtones" folder, but that did not work. ALSO, if you tell me I have to purchase the song AGAIN, what if the song is an ALBUM CUT? Thanks!!

The same thing happened to me. I clicked on ADVANCED (or if not Advanced check the other options up there-but I believe it was the advanced folder) at the top of the iTunes screen and clicked on *"authorize this computer"* and all I had to do was re-type my password and voila. My computer was "authorized".
    Hope this helps.

  • IPhone 4 vibrates in my ear and makes audible sound while on call

Ever since I did the 4.2 update if I am on a call and message comes in, the phone vibrates in my ear and plays an audible sound that everyone around me can hear and also my caller. First time it happened it scared me so much I about dropped the phone. Now it just makes me mad. When the 4.3 update was released, I was hopeful this "bug" would be fixed. No such luck! Has anyone experienced this? Is there some way to stop the phone from doing this and have it just do the "soft" tone that only I can hear? I went to the apple store and the guy I spoke with suggested just turning off the vibrate. That is not the solution. What about the sound that it plays? Am I supposed to turn that off too? Then it wouldn't make any sound or vibrate. Niiiiiice! Just what I need. A phone that doesn't ring or vibrate.
    Someone HELP!
    Thanks!

I started a thread like this with my 3Gs iPhone. My solution was to disable the "Vibrate" feature under "Settings, Sounds, Silent" and when I get a phone call I just use the "silent/vibrate" switch on the side of the phone and it turns off all the sounds. Just make sure that you have the "Vibrate" under "Silent" turned off. That fix works for my iPhone 4 as well. Hope this helps.
