IPod Touch Greyed out ' No wi-fi '

My iPod touch 2nd gen, 8gb, mc model, 4.2.1 software version isn't able to connect to wi-fi as the 'wi-fi' setting in 'options' is greyed out. Iv'e reset the network settings, reset all settings and reset all content and settings yet NOTHING? However i did accidentally water damage it about a year ago and it didn't even turn on so i just left it at that. Come a month or 2 ago and my ipod all of a sudden turned on?, everything on it was working fine which puzzled me quite a bit. Then come about a week after, my iPod went into restore mode all of sudden, so i turned turned it off, turned it back on and it kept saying i have to restore so that also puzzled me. My wi-fi may work once or month by restoring it but it doesn't stay like it. What could possibly be the problem?

If you feel that the software or firmware is the cause of your issue you should DFU restore your iPod. A DFU restore allows you to replace both the software and firmware that was altered during your software update.
To put your iPod in DFU mode:
1. Connect your iPod to a computer with iTunes installed
2. While the iPod is connected to the computer, hold the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time for 8 seconds.
3. Let go of the sleep/wake button and continue holding the home button
4. A dialog box will appear in iTunes stating that iTunes has detected an iPod/iPhone in recovery mode if you were successful.
Then all you need to do is click OK, then restore the iPod.

thank you-i have to check into the authorization and the account-i gave my husband my old ipod when i updated last year so both at one time have been on this computer but as it stands, it only comes up with my device when i plug into Itunes.
i don't think i have any restrictions for installing apps although my normal way of doing it is to download from the ipod touch. i did find that all i had to do was right click on my device name and got the message to transfer my apps and then they showed up in my library. Also when i clicked the synch checkbox i was able to view the ipod touch picture without it being greyed out. after all that i was able toupdate to IOS 5 successfully except my videos and podcast, and pdfs did not come over. This confuses me since i had dragged them over to my library to make sure that i had everything in my library and on my device. Not a big problem, since i just dragged them in itunes from my library to my device but sometimes i wonder if i understand the big picture:)

I've gotten the iPod to sync after restoring it and not changing ANY of the music sync settings. I didn't even click "sync music", I just have it on manual and clicked autofill.
After it synced all of the music successfully, I tried to sync a playlist (my recently added), and it's gone bonkers again, it won't sync the playlist's music, or any new music now.

If you restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and still have the problem then you likely have an hardware problem and the Genius Bar is a good option.

Just do the update on your syncing computer. All the items should be in your iTunes library or, for synced photos, on the computer. The items will be synced back to the iPod during a latter stage of the update.
