IPod won't sync, spurious permission error

I have just purchased the new iPod with video. It will not sync with my library, after adding ten or twenty songs, I get an error that says "Attempting to copy to the disk 'iPod' failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation". It goes on to claim that I don't have write access to my Music Folder, which seems in direct contradiction with the first (in bold) message.
I've double checked the permissions on my music folder, and I do have read/write access to all the files and folders inside. I have run the Disk Utility and have done the "Repair Permissions" out of superstition.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get a more helpful error message out of iTunes? I suspect that this problem doesn't really have anything to do with permissions. I had a couple of songs where the file had been deleted and received the same error (but after I hit OK it gave me the name of the missing track).

I couldn't find any good information on rebuilding the iTunes library, so I decided to tackle it by hand. This did, in fact, fix my problem.
Back Up Your Playlist Data
Open iTunes and choose the "Export Library" option from under the iTunes menu. Save this file to the desktop. This file represents all of your playlist data.
Delete Your Library
Quit iTunes and open up your Music folder. Nvigate to your "iTunes Music" folder. Inside of that is a folder called "iTunes". Located inside of that is your iTunes library, it is comprised of two files:
iTunes Library
iTunes Library.xml
Move these files your desktop, they will no longer be read by iTunes.
Add Track Back to Your Library
Relaunch iTunes, all of your tracks and playlists will be missing. Drag your Music folder onto iTunes, iTunes will re-add all of your tracks.
Import Your Playlist Data
Now that your tracks have returned, import your playlist data back. Choose the "Import" option from under the iTunes menu and choose the file your exported back in the first step. iTunes will load in your playlist data and re-link your tracks to your playlist.
After this final step, I can now synchronize my library to my iPod without issue.

  • Ipod Won't Sync, gives several error messages

I have been having trouble with my itunes lately. Whenever I try to plug my ipod into my computer when itunes is up, the error messages "The ipod "Alexander's Ipod" cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found" and "Attempting to copy to the disk "Ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to" come up. A few days ago I managed to get some of my songs on my ipod. I went to go back again to add more to my ipod later that day and the syncing started and was working again. It got up to all my songs on itunes (syncing like 3000 out of 3000 songs), and that message came up again. Restore hasnt worked either. I hope this makes sense. If anyone could help be out, It would be greatly appreciated.

*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • Ipod won't sync."unknown error (-69)"

I've had months of no problems with Ipod classic 80g. I purchased some more music, one song of about 20 synced onto my ipod. Then I got a message from itunes saying: "Attempting to copy to the disk "MOM'S IPOD" failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)" I've spent hours trying different options, my recent purchases are on my library, but only the first song is on my ipod!! This happened right after the last update of i-tunes. Is there a bug with that or what?

Thank You!!! I don't know WHY file (Eric Clapton-Pilgrim CD)was bad when I've had it in there for a few months. But that's what it kept stopping on when tring to sync. So I deleated it and sync finally ran thru w/o a ERROR code. I think I will try to reinstall it later and see what happens. Thanks again for responding. it is easy to get lost in all of this info, I had't found that page.

    download iTunes again from Apple.

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You  should be making backups of your content regularly, either through  iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a  external drive.

  • Ipod cannot be synced.  Unknown error (-48)

I've had my 80 gig ipod classic for 4 months now, and I've had very few problems with it. Whenever I've had an issue with iTunes not recognizing the ipod when I plugged it in, it was easily resolved with a reset or reinstalling iTunes, or restarting the computer. However, today when I went to add some new files to my ipod, I had to install the newest version, 1.1.1, and after installing that version and trying to sync the files to my ipod, iTunes simply refused. Repeatedly I'd get the error "Ipod cannot be synced. Unknown error (-48). I've been browsing this site and others to find an answer, I've tried all the standard ipod fixes (five Rs) and toggled with the syncing options, namely syncing only checked songs and manual sync, and it won't load any new music either way. I have Windows XP home edition on a Sony Vaio that's a few years old, and I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me fix this issue with my ipod.
    <edit>
Another thing I've noticed is that when I leave my ipod plugged into my computer, the "other" part of what's on my ipod increases slowly. There's actually more of this orange "other" data on my ipod than music, and there's absolutely nothing on my ipod except a few thousand music files and two videos. At least, there shouldn't be.
    null

Oh yes, me too. Two days ago I bought my 160GB iPod Classic, but I have not been able to put anything in it. First the sync seemed to take hours (ca.6GB/1400 songs) and finally I had to disconnect without eject, because the iTunes and my computer got jammed. Again and again the same thing. Unknown error (-48) I recall.
Then after updating the iPod software (now 1.1.1) and reinstalling the iTunes a couple of times, the iTunes does not recognise my iPod at all. iPod says first it is syncing, then just connected, but nothing in iTunes.
Like a kid with who has a brand new toy, but is not able to play with it.
I tried calling the Apple support, but they just dodged the question and apparently had no idea. Anyone, how can I get some music into my brand new iPod?

  • My 32GB 5th gen iPod won't sync

My 32GB 5th gen iPod won't sync. There is still over 10 GB free and my itunes is only 17 GB yet it won't let me sync anything. Can anyone help?

My ipod 32gb 5th gen will not sync to itunes or any mac computer. An error message appears saying that my ipod touch requires itunes ver10.7. Does anyone know how to get this on my ipod touch 5? I cannot find it, does it need to be installed onto my ipod from a computer?

  • My iPod won't sync; how do I fix this?

My iPod won't sync any of my music.  It says there is a disk error.  Is this a hardware issue or something else?   What should I do?

Try connecting your ipod to another computer and sync only 1 file or song just for isolation purpose only to see if it'll sync.
If still not syncing, then porbably you may have a bad iOS installed in iPod which is hard to see if it has a problem because you said nothing's wrong with iPod. I just saying is, it MIGHT have a bad iOS.
If you are unable to do a restore, put your ipod in DFU mode, then connect to iTunes and iTunes will detect your ipod in restore mode. Press shift key (PC keyboard) then click the restore button on iTunes. I hope you have your copy of IPSW file for restoration purposes.

  • My ipod won't sync music because it says ipod does not support the music, although it previously downloaded the same music onto the ipod

    Newest ipod gen,
My ipod won't sync about 89% of my library because 'it doesn't support the song' but I previously had the songs on my ipod, downloaded from the same computer. Itunes on my computer had issues and I'm now re syncing all music. How do I get my music back on my ipod if Itunes says it can't be synced?
    Thanks!

  • I have one of the original IPOD's and just tried adding a bunch of songs, (200) and now that they're on my computer my ipod won't sync as it now says i need about 8.45 more gb. any thoughts on this?

I have one  of the oriignal IPOD's circo 2006.  I've got about 150 tunes on it which has been fine but today tried to add another 200 or so and was advised I need about 848 MB to load them.  Is there any solution.  I have 2 playlists.  One with the original 150 tunes and one with the addiitional 200 tunes. Thoughts as now my IPOD won't sync at all and I don't want to delete any of the songs if I don't have to.

How much storage on the IPOD  -  I have one that has 60GB on it.   Also have an IPOD shuffle that held less songs.
As your IPOD does not have enough storage for all of your songs, you have to create a list to sync to it that does not exceed the storage size.
For instance my IPOD shuffle had its only list of songs that did not exceed storage.
The IPOD gets them all because I only loaded the songs from my CDs that I really liked into ITUNES - leaving out the ones I skipped over.
