IQ demodulation board suggestion

Hi guys, I am looking for a high speed NI board that can perform the quadrature demodulation (for a 20 MHz signal), I have looked through the web but so far I can only find 5620, 5660 and 5142.
cos(wt) ----> Device under Test (DUT) -----> Acos(wt + theta)
cos(wt) is the original tranmitting signal (20 MHz). After it is passed through the DUT, amplitude change (A) and phase shift (theta) is then introduced into the output signal (the frequency still remains the same.) The purpose of this setup is to measure the amplitude change and phase shift, relative to the original signal.
Thus I need a simple I/Q demodulation board that can perform this job. Is there any NI board that one can recommend?
Or is there a board that can generate the driving signal and do the IQ domodulation at the same time? I think 5620, 5660 and 5142 can only perform I/Q demodulation process...
Each board costs quite a lot! Therefore I want to make sure that I am buying the right thing...
Thanks for the help!

Hello,
There are three digitizer modules that contain Onboard Signal Processing in the form of a Digital Downconverter (DDC): the PXIe-5622, PXI-5142, and PXI-5620. Each of these will perform quadrature demodulation in firmware.
The PXI-5660 is composed of a PXI-5600 RF downconverter and a PXI-5620 digitizer, so the PXI-5660 is not a good option for you if you only need a baseband digitizer.
All three are capable of acquiring a 20 MHz wide signal. Where that 20 MHz signal is centered in frequency, and whether the digitizer must be DC coupled will impact your options, so if you post more info about that I can help narrow down your choices.
As for options that include both transmit and receive, the above comments about the 5640R and 5641R are correct.

  • How do I watch a movie downloaded to my MacBook on my ATV?     The movie works fine on the computer but I just get a checkerboard pattern on the TV screen with audio but no video.  Apple support is useless and suggested that I reload the software...

Just downloaded a HD movie to my computer (brand new MacBook Pro, all software up to date) and can't watch it on my Apple TV (brand new last year, all software upto date).  Using Airplay mirroring works fine in general but when I press play on the movie I lose the picture and get only a checkerboard pattern and sound.  Another MacBook we have gives a black screen with no sound.  Apple assistance is completely useless.  They suggested that I download the most recent software (all upto date), reload the movie (done and no help) or read the FAQs (no help, although this board suggests that there is a fundamental compatibility issue with mirroring of HD content...!)   That's what the ATV is for!   The new MacBook uses a different connector and I can't plug it directly into the monitor input on my TV with the connector I had from the old computer.   I ordered a new connector for fifty bucks and they stupidly sent it UPS with a signature required for delivery since it is such a high value item so now I have a hassle to receive it.  In any case plugging in a wire from across the room isn't a solution.  Is there any way to make all of this supposedly integrated hardware and software work or has Apple completely lost their way and turned into a Microsoft clone?   Hopefully some of their market mavens will read this and steer the ship back on course.  In the meantime any help you may provide would be much appreciated.

The movie is from iTunes.   You would think that a download from iTunes to a MacBook could be watched on an HDTV using Apple TV without any headaches bit this does not appear to be the case.

  • Better Certification Board recommendations (Request for comments)

    Now for something completely differerent:
Jordan,  I appreciate what you tried to do with the Solutions for Review thread but... The latest exchanges (and a few others) on this thread I feel demonstrate why the "Mega-Thread" has already outlived its usefulness.  There a a lot of good tidbits and side discussions buried in this thread that would be much more searchable and cohesive if the posters started their own threads.
Perhaps some new board suggestions for effectivness could be floated in place of the "Sample Exam Solutions for Review"?
Tips on CLD Solutions for review:
Start a new thread - indicate there will be a CLD example for review in the subject line.
For follow-up discussions on critique points start a new thread with a link to the example and a subject about the point under discussion.
This should allow the frequent fliers on this board the chance to develop a useful body of theads where specific points related to Cert specific preparation and concepts can be gathered and easily cross linked by the heavy hitters (And who knows, easilly searched by the certification candidates)
As the board grows I would hate to lose some "gems" in the noise.  If we get together now, to think about what this boards goals are we can maximize our return on investment in supporting certification.
All comments welcome.  Jordan, please consider floating this discussion for maximum visibility.
    Jeff

I think that's a great idea - centralise the submissions and decentralise the critiques.
Another idea to improve the Certification Board might be to introduce subforums for each of the various types of certification (CLAD, CLD, CLA, etc.).

  • Gmail access fails on safari. But it works when i login as administrator. Please help!

I am unable to use gmail from a regular user account on my iMac.It fails with an error string that ends with "... becasue Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "accounts.google.com". "
I have tried resetting safari and it does not help.
I have tried adding DNS entries based on some discussion board suggestions and that does not help either.
I am able to access gmail as an administator on the same machine though!
Please point me in the right direction, please! Thanks!

You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have the computer checked out.

    1. Try an external USB keyboard.
    2. This may help.

    3. Virtual keyboard
There is a virtual keyboard available in OS X 10.8.4
        System Preferences > Keyboard
Checkmark the box beside "Show Keyboard & Character Viewrs in menu bar.
Click "Input Sources"  and then "Show input menu in menu bar".

  • ATI driver issues and slow video playback

I just reinstalled Arch and I installed the ATI drivers, at first I couldn't get them working but when I did, video in full screen was amazingly slow, so I tried installing ati-drivers-arch, as someone in the boards suggested but after that each time I start X, it would crash my computer, so right now I am using the standard vesa driver to even start X.
Also when trying to resize mplayer (while using -vo gl) it says my computer is too slow. And VLC has no speed issues but the quality of the picture is very poor.
    I am running:

It doesn't look like xorg 7 has been installed.  The latest kernel 2.6.15 needs xorg 7, udev, and initrd .
I may be wrong but my xorg is much smaller in size and fonts are handled differently in the latest kernels.
Please see the blogs concerning the upgrades to the xorg 7 changes.

    Hi,
You have part of the Community Toolbar installed, it's a third party plugin that isn't compatible with recent versions of Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the InputManagers folder.
Move these files to the Trash:
    CTLoader/ctloader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ctloader
Now from the same Library folder open the Application Support folder and move these files to the Trash.
    Conduit/Plugins/cttoolbar.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ct_plugins
    Relaunch Safari.
    Hope this helps....

  • What's the best workflow for Home Movie Importing and Enjoying?

I'm new to iMovie (and the mac) and have started importing all my home movies from my camcorder into iMovie. I quickly realized that movies take a huge amount of disk space and it may or may not be reasonable to import all my movies and keep them on the hard disk in .dv format. At 12GB/Hour I would need 1.2 Terabytes of storage (plus backup). If that is the best workflow, i'm happy to invest in a few terabytes of storage and back up. But before I do that, I want to check to see if there is a different workflow I should follow given my use case.
    Here is my use case:
I have 100 hours of 8mm and miniDV tapes already and plan to continue creating more.
I want to import them all into the iMac for ease of organization, searching for the clips of interest, and watch them either on my iMAC and also on my TV (via TIVO).
I may do some editing, but this is not a big priority for me at this time. I may do more editing in the distant future when I have more time. My editing for now will be limited to rejecting portions of clips I don't want.
I plan to watch the movies from my iMac on my TV via my TIVO (i've already ordered the Roxio Toast software that I understand I need, per the Tivo web site).
The final piece of my use case is back-up. I'd prefer to back up my movies on disk this way I maintain any editing i've done in case of a disk failure. Depending on what video format is recommended, this may bump me into a RAID multi-terabyte system as both working and automatic backup?
    Here are my questions:
Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)
Or is the .dv format intended only for temporary editing and users are expected to compress into another format after editing? if so, what format and which tool is recommended? (keeping in mind that I want to view the clips via Tivo and Roxio/Toast).
If I need to byte the bullet and invest in storage, my quick math suggests I'll need about 2 terabytes for the library and 2 more for back up for a total of 4 terabytes!?. Is a RAID system recommended for this? (I was surprised that the Apple store did not carry such a system, so perhaps that is not the best option). What would you recommend?
Anyone out there with a similar use case? I know I've asked a lot of questions here. I'd appreciate any recommendations you may have, even if you cant answer all of them.
    Thank you.

I am in a similar mode, though about half as much existing DV footage.
+Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)+
    Short answer, yes; long answer:
I did "bite the bullet" since 1T drives are at or just over $100. I'm using a MacBook Pro so I bought an 2 port eSATA card for my cardbus slot ($34), and a 1T eSATA/Firewire/USB drive ($119). I don't plan to "back up" as I am not going to get rid of my Mini DV tapes/vhs/analog tapes, etc. Those will be in an off-site dark cool closet elsewhere. I don't want to do RAID or such as it still puts everything in the same drive unit, in the same location. Basically I'm splitting my video import to two different physical drives. So if lightning, thieves, personal incompetence or whatever strikes, there's more chance it'll only affect one of the drives. I've thought about a Drobo, which you might consider. It is unique device that offers a spin on RAID that offers some advantages.
Everything I read here on these boards suggests that it is best to grab the source video in the original format whenever possible. Since storage is cheap, makes sense to me.
It is likely you wouldn't compress your video unless you were going to edit it. For example if you wanted to make a video of the kids growing up to give the relatives you'd likely end up compressing to burn them a dvd. You would compress if you were going to use MobileMe, YouTube, etc. to post some footage. Whether you watch the video from home, or output to DVD for others, or post online, at least you'll have the source video in it's best possible original format to work with.
This is an aside, but might be useful, I imported one tape at a time, let iM09 create a new event and split per each day. THen I renamed every event based on what the content was before doing the next tape. This really helps later on once yo realize you have a hard drive with 50 hours + of everything in your life on it. I included the year in the name in some way, for example, John's wedding 1994, Hawaii 2000, Hawaii 2004. Then I ended up drag/dropping Hawaii to one event.

  • Error message when i open itunes

    Hello,
Can anyone help me with this? I get this error message every time I plug my ipod in and open itunes. Also the do not disconnect message flashes constantly and will not go away. I've tried everything the website and the message boards suggest. I'm not that technologically savvy, so I am doing everything I can. I've already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and updated and restored my ipod. I don't know what to do. Here is the error message:
\itunes_control\itunes\itunesDB is corrupt and unreadable, run chkdsk utility

    Hello there,
Are you sure the message doesn't say "ipod_control"...?
There's an Apple KB article on this issue:

You'll want to Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater...

  • P965 Platinum, Vista, and Raid

I spent a good couple of hours skimming the boards yesterday trying to set up my two new 320 SATAII hard drives in a RAID array.  I ran into a ton of trouble, but then finally figured out part/all of my problem and got things working.  I figure this information will be helpful for anyone who is trying to do the same.  I'll post the most useful links I found at the end of this post as well...
    heres what i'm working with:
    MSI P965 Platinum
    2gb OCZ DDR2 800MHZ 2 dimm kit
36.7 WD Raptor SATAII (as system drive)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
    Sapphire X1650 PRO 512MB PCI-Express
Antec TruePower TRIO 650 650W Power Supply
promise technology ultra ata 133 tx2 (the source of a ton of trouble)
originally i had vista ultimate x64 installed on a 36.7 gb raptor that was performing ok (once i did the extremetech suggested reghacks for lowdiskspace and 8.3ntfsfilenames), but not as well as my friends new computer with a blazing fast 500 gb stripe.
my bios was configured as such:
    on board raid controller: ide
on chip ata devices -> sata 1 config: enhanced
    ...configure sata 1 as: ide
    ...sata 2 configuration: enabled
i shut down the computer, and changed
on chip ata devices -> configure sata 1 as: raid
then i was able to get into the raid setup with Ctrl + I, and set up my array.  Here's where I ran into my first problem.  I figured I wanted a raid 0 because I don't care soooo much about my data being lost, and i have never had a hard drive die on me (knock on wood) in the past 8 years (guardian angel).  So setting up my array was working fine, except for i hadn't anticipated that i would have to choose an ideal strip size.  The board suggests 128k, but after much deliberation I decided since I wanted the speed benefit for my OS and programs, I wanted 32k strip size; but having a 640 stripe for just the OS and programs seems huge, so out of curiosity I tried setting up two raid arrays (both across the same drives).  The first was a 100gb raid 0 with a 32k strip size and the second was a 496.2 raid 0 with a 128k strip size.  This worked fine, but then I got to thinking... can I set up the 100 gb array as a mirror?  If so, then I get the best of both worlds since I can secure all my OS/settings/programs/documents, but I'll have a super fast (respectively) 400 gb drive for ephemeral memory and expendable data (replaceable stuff like ripped dvds, downloaded music and programs, downloaded anything...).  This would all be at the expense of 100 gb which certainly seems worth it at this case because I wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of losing all my data like everyone seems to cry about all over the internet when talking about raid stripes.  So i set it up, this worked fine... next step boot into vist ultimate and start installation.
Here proved my most annoying step, as my first problem occurred when I couldn't find the dvd/cd drive in the boot sequence menu.  I saw the usb card reader drives, my raid arrays, and my raptor... but no dvd/cd drive (of which I had two connected).  After scouring the web about that darned Jmicron chip, it appeared as if the bios cannot see the PATA drives on this board and I would have to try pressing F8 at the jmicron bios screen.  THIS IS COMPLETE MISINFORMATION.
As stupid as it is, the real problem is that the boot sequence only displays 6 (i think it's 6) bootable media, and if you have anything else it just doesn't show it.  This gave me the impression that the bios was unaware of my cd/dvd drives connected to the IDE controller.  As soon as I unplugged my card reader, the dvd/cd drives appeared in the boot sequence... thank gawd because...
i had tried plugging my dvd/cd drives into the promise ata controller (which i already know lacks a vista 64bit compatible driver), which actually allowed me to boot into the vista setup whereupon I was asked (I did NOT have to press F6, even though everyone seems to think they have to) to install the driver for the dvd/cd controller (I assumed and was right that it was asking for the promise ata controller driver).  I put the most recent drivers from their website on a usb stick, plugged it in, and the driver worked and then setup was able to see my dvd/cd drives (which is weird because how did I get to that point if it couldn't?).
Then setup said it couldn't find any drives, so I figured the problem was with the driver for the ICH8R intel raid controller.  I downloaded drivers from MSI's website, intel's, and a bunch of others, and NONE of them worked.  Setup would install the drivers, but it still could not see any hard drives attached to it.  I'm not sure what caused this problem, but my best guess is that it had to do with the promise card being plugged in.
I gave up on that and figured I'd try something else, maybe the promise card was causing the problem.  So I tried changing the ports that all my sata drives are plugged into.  The two new 320's were on 0 and 2, and I also had a drive on 3 4 and 5.  I read somewhere that intel had some array issues on 0 1 and 2, so I tried setting my 320's on 4 and 5 and moved my other drives around it.  This is also when I had the idea to remove my card reader and pull out the ultra ata 133 tx2 card.
I was able then to see the dvd/cdrom in the boot sequence, put it first, and boot into vista setup.  VISTA ULTIMATE DID NOT ASK ME FOR ANY DRIVERS AT THIS POINT.  I'm not sure if it was the sata ports I had my drives plugged into or not, but at this point vista setup saw all my drives and I chose the 100 gb array and installation went smoothly.
Excellent… now I just have to install photoshop and see if it loads in 4 seconds like on my friends new computer with the stripe.  If not, then I'll probably just cry.
Hopefully I've covered enough of the keywords in this description that anyone who has this problem will  easily find this page.  Remember:
JMICRON IDE DEVICES CAN BE SEEN BY THE BIOS
VISTA SETUP DOES NOT NEED ANY ADDITIONAL DRIVERS TO INTERACT WITH THE RAID CONTROLLER
SORRY IF THIS WAS A TON OF INFORMATION BUT AFTER ALL THE TIME I SPENT TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT I FEEL LIKE NO ONE HAD POSTED A FULL BLOWN SOLUTION
    Hope this was helpful

I have the very same issue except two things. When I try to see why it will not load the Array I find that the first drive (Maxtor 6V160E0) is red and considered to be bad. Did you happen to notice if your system showed the same thing?
I have moved the drives around and it still corrupts the Maxtor 6V160E0. I have not tried to move them to the end of the SATA connections. I will try that and see what happens.
Other thing was the JMicron would see my NEC DVDRW, but thought it was a ACSI and it would only read at 12X. It even stated that in the OS. I then was told by the Techs that they have not had alot of luck with NEC drives. So, I purchased a LiteOn SATA II DVDRW, connected it to the JMicron SATA connector and it came alive. I then found it to turn out worthless DVD's and CD's. Not even that Drive would read them after burning. I got so ticked about the JMicron I just shut it off in the BIOS. I hooked up the drive to the #4 port and whala, no more problems with burn. Now it reads, writes, and re-writes at the stated speeds (also I needed to update the firmware twice since I purchase the drive. The MS updates did something to it and the new firmware fixed it.). I have never been able to get a drive to work correctly on the JMicron no matter who made it.
I sure hope that MSI has scraped any board that will ever use that controller. JMircon is not my friend!
I am going to get 2 more SATA II drives and try this without having to backup all my data.

  • Powerbook G4 Wont Start

My PB G4 wont startup. Tuttle on the G4 message board suggested I post here to see about some help. Disk Utility found nothing wrong, same with Hardware scan. I even reinstalled the OS 10.4.2 with no effect. The computer stalls at startup on the grey screen w/the apple and will go no further. Sadly that didn't do it.
The suggestion to perform the safe startup didn't work at all. It remained the same as ever: a blank grey screen. I waited for several minutes, then shut down and tried again.
When I started up in single user mode I was given a screen which was filled with "failed to load exrension com.apple.driver.AppleMacRiscPCI" with alot of junk in between.
It wouldn't let me enter any commands, at the end it repeats: "still waiting for root device"
    HELP!! Uh-oh...
    Thanks again,
    Antonio

    Let's start over.
10.3.9 was pre-installed and shipped with your Mac when purchased along with a 10.4 Upgrade install package?
Were you experiencing any problems with 10.3.9 prior to installing the 10.4 Upgrade?
You indicated that you re-installed 10.4.2. Was this the 10.4.2 Delta or Combo Update?
Do you maintain a backup of your hard drive data and if so, do you have a recent update?
The reason I ask, this may require re-initializing the hard drive or performing an Erase & Install (which erases the hard drive) using the 10.3.x install package that shipped with your Mac and then re-installing 10.4.

  • New iTunes

Seems to me that the issue is the latest version of iTunes that's causing all of the problems everyone's been having. I know that this may be stating the obvious, but most all of the posts mention that their iPods "used to sync but not since downloading and installing iTunes 8.???" or something similar. My second generation Nano has been working a little squirrely since I downloaded the latest iTunes, but it still does sync. I ordered a new Classic last night from Best Buy, but I did so before I read all of the horror stories. I'll probably be returning it without even opening it just as soon as it delivers and wait until all of these problems are resolved.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ipod_sales.svg some 160,000,000 iPods have been sold to date. Yes some people do have issues, and it's very frustating for them when it happens, but I don't think the activity on these boards suggest you're any more likely to have a problem with an iPod than any other purchase you might make - by & large they do just what they are supposed to do. I still think the things could work better - more reliabilty & some improvements to the user interface would be nice - but I don't think you should let the unhappy experience of a few make you overly concerned.

  • Xferred from VHS to jerky video

I have used my ADVC 100 digital video converter many times in the past to transfer VHS tapes to my hard drive and eventually to DVDs. Hadn't done it in months until yesterday when I tried it and discovered that as the tapes were being recorded onto my hard drive they looked fine on the monitor, but when I played them back in iMovie HD 6 the audio was fine, but the video was herky-jerky.
I've read other posts on this board suggesting the culprit is QuickTime 7.5 and/or its plug-ins. I actually don't have any plug-ins for it. I tried removing the one .converter file and then restoring it, but that didn't do anything. I suspect that all my successful recordings in the past were before I upgraded this particular PowerBook G4 to Leopard and goodness-knows-what-else.
So I'm wondering if upgrading to iMovie 08 would cure this.
    Any thoughts?

Are you sure you have no plug-ins? I had a similar problem last year and my son-in-law fiddled about with things - Perian, Flip4 mac etc. So the previous thread may be of use.

  • Aspect ratio inquery

1)I have one question that might seem naive. Under preferences in the sequence menu in FCP it say the aspect ratio for my project is DV NTSC 3:2.....now, does that affect quality when it is being compressed to the MPEG2-4:3 codec?? Everything seems to be in either 4:3 or 16:9. The FCP project ratio being DV 3:2 doesn't affect final DVD quality (which would be 4:3 for me)?

This a question that I've contemplated as well. Most of the info on this board suggests to simply accept the 3:2 setting as correct for SD so I've sort of glazed over this topic without fully understanding it.
Please forgive my ignorance as I'm an audio professional attempting to expand my horizons.
    1. In your equation where is the factor of 240 derived?
    2. If 3:2 is indeed the correct expression of the SD aspect ratio then why is the expression 4:3 so widely used?
    Thanks

  • Solaris 10 generating Malicious Traffic...HELP

    Hi,
Recently, we started getting WARNING messages from our ISP that one of our box IP generating malicious traffic.
We have a Solaris 10 Box (OS patched upto date - services like telnet, snmp are disabled already) with that IP (ISP mentioned), is generating malicious traffic. I confirm it doing because I could see online using netstat command today.
Its generating traffic onto internet with destination port = 23 and source port (on my box) is random.
I implemented a script using lsof, that reads source port of all connection destined to remotes 23 port. It also includes running lsof using that random local port to get the process (or ID). But none of them I could get as the script result.
Today I happened to see it online and the reason why my script not generating any output is that the suspicious process generating the traffic, changing local port numbers in such a way that by the time I run lsof, the local port connection closed/gone. It keeps generating/changing very fast such that the script not able to capture the process.
The only thing I could get the output of ps aef and is attached below. Could anybody please go through the list of processes in listed below and hint me any process to suspect?

Wow. That is really too bad. You can't spot anything suspicious in the logs? Do you think it could have been the telnet vulnerability? Maybe they got in before the patch.
Sadly the above posters were probably right, you need to format and start over. Even if you identify the culprit on the machines there is no way of making sure it is not still compromised.
I am a fan of ipfilter and scripts watching the logs for suspicious activities. It is not fool-proof by a long shot but it keeps the kids out. I set it so anything suspicious (even a port scan) results in completely blocking that IP from all ports, not just the one it was pestering. If you set it to 'one hit wonder' you can stop people from doing things like the telnet vulnerability, but I would not bank on complete protection. I use sshblack and modify it to watch other services as well as ssh. However, I am in academics and not business so I am sure if there is money involved a person would really want to make sure what they were doing was 'right' not just a bulletin board suggestion.
If they did get in through the telnet vulnerability there was nothing you could have done besides turn the service off from the start.
I am not trained in this kind of thing but I am pretty sure ALL data on those boxes must be considered compromised as well and should be isolated from the new installations.

  • Formula field won't display

Sorry for the overly-generic subject, but I'm not exactly sure how to classify this problem.  I'm convinced it's a Crystal Reports bug but would be delighted to be convinced otherwise.  Here's the issue:
Whenever I create a formula field in the format of trim(field A) " "trim(fieldB) and use the field in a report, if field B is null the data for the entire field will be skipped in the report.  Doesn't matter if the formula is in a group header or the detail line, the result is the same.  I've created a formula with the obvious conditionals, ie, if field B is null then trim(field A) else trim(fieldA)" " trim(fieldB) but that doesn't work either.  I am trying to combine two address lines.  In most cases there is not a second address field, so most addresses don't display using this method.  Someone on another board suggested a workaround which I am using (placing the second address line in it's own group and then suppressing the group when empty) but I have another instance where this won't work, ie, in the detail line.  I'm trying to actually combined three fields (first name, last name, and title).  In this case it is title which is usually blank.
Am I missing something head-slapping obvious here?
    Thanks in advance

Seems to me I've come across the same thing way back.  It is a crystal thing, bug or just the odd way crystal does some stuff, I'm not sure (is there a difference?)  I can't remember what my fix was, think I may have had some logic similar to what you tried, but I had more than 2 address fields to compare, it sucked. You could try this (basic syntax):dim str0 as stringdim str1 as stringstr0 = trim{field A}str1 = iif (isnull ( {field B} ), "", trim {field B})formula = str0 & " " & str1 Add the iff logic to str0 as well if field A can be null. Things like this are why, when possible, I like to build as much logic as possible into a database view and then just use crystal for displaying the data.
